I love this list… perhaps because I have so much difficulty explaining what I do.

Love your links! You helped me think differently about how I explain my business. When I say I’m a business writer, I get the blank stare, and then they say, “Like, what do you write?”. When I just say I’m a writer, they say, “Wow, that’s great!” and get a faraway look, imagining me in a bohemian garrett smoking French cigarettes and pounding a typewriter. Not useful.

I’ve always wanted to say I’m a chef to quadropods, since I make all the food for one of our dogs.
Your post made me think of another post of yours, Liz:

Hi Tammy!
what fun your comment is. I love that post that you linked to also! I like your “what do you do sentence even better!

Actually, it’s my Newfoundland, Hugo, who wants me to say “quadropods.” At the moment it’s technically “quadropod,” singular. But if I had to make Hugo’s food too, I’d have to quit my day job, given the size of that dog.

Hi Codswallop!
I have heard of it, but rumor has that I never read it . . .

Hi Cam,
I don’t know how I missed you in moderation — or for that matter how you got stuck there!
But, I sure understand how hard it is to figure out how to say what it is I do for a living. That’s why I’ve spent so much time on the subject. Glad this list was helpful.

Hi Angela!
I know how frustrating and unhelpful it is to have folks not understand what it is we do . . . for yesrs I settled for telling my mother-in-law I wrote spy novels for a living. Whew! It was just easier to explain.

Hiya GP!
No not really.
You have a work-life that is a work life in more ways than one. I wonder sometimes that it doesn’t make you schizophrenic.

Haha - I love telling people something I obviously don’t do. It’s a great way to lighten the mood.
If it’s a business meeting, then instead of saying Operations Mgr, I’ll often say “Company Mascot”.
If it’s a social setting then I usually come up with something like “Triscuit salter”.

Hi Shane!
A friend of mine used to say that she handed out cotton candy at NASCAR races. People never knew quite whether to believe her.
