A Day of Silence — April 30
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 8:12 am
Virginia Tech
The doctor remarked it was unusual — a 5-day old boy circumsized, who only gave a shout and then stayed silent all day . . . But lucky for us, he was never silent about his joy or his laughter. Lucky for all of us, he learned that not to be silent mattered.
My son graduates in May, just down the road from Virginia Tech. Just a few miles away, some silence that some other parents hear now won’t go away ever. . . . It’s silence that follows a noise — a despicable human act. It’s the pain of silence from all who died and heard by all who knew them. It’s the silence of thoughts of what might have been.
It’s the deep, piercing sadness of taking children from their parents and from the world they lived in. . . . it’s the deep, screaming hurt that made some poor soul do what no young child ever aspires to doing.
All of space is infinitely silent.
One Day of Silence
Silence can say more then a thousand words.
This day shall unite us all about this unbelievable painful & shocking event and show some respect and love to those who lost their loved ones.
On April 30th 2007, the Blogosphere will hold a One-Day Blog Silence in honor towards the victims of Virginia. 33 died at the US college massacre.
The Blogosphere is in deep mourning.
All you have to do is spread the word about it and post the graphic on your blog on 30th April 2007. No words and no comments. Just respect and empathy.
You can copy a badge, big or small for your blog at OneDayBlogSilence.com
For every child in pain,
for every child that we cherish,
for everyone on the planet,
sometimes the conversation should be
silent.

My heart breaks for the Virginia Tech community. Like you, the whole tragedy hits too close to home. We all feel the pain of these innocent victims.

Tech was my little brother’s second choice school. If he hadn’t made his first pick he’d be there this week with many of his friend.
He’s spent a lot of time on that campus and pulls for VT as his “home” team.
This horror has really shaken him.
It’s times like these when prayer is about the best thing we can do.

Hi Char,
I know you are near. This must be too close for comfort. I’m thinking of you. Please know that.

Hi Chris,
I’m sorry your brother, and you through him, has to fine a way through through this tragedy. It’s a sadness for everyone, even those who watch with compassion.

Liz,
You captured the tragedy of yesterday’s events better than anyone else in my opinion. I’ll be keeping you and your son in my prayers along with the families and friends of the victims.
Thank you for sharing the “One Day Blog Silence”.

There will be no words on my blog on that day. Today though… You know, when I heard the news all I could think about was the Bang Bang You’re Dead play. What can I say? I was shocked. I am far, but the tragedy touched me deep. Because it is not the first time something like this happens; because Virginia is not the first place of agony. Every time we see such a catastrophe we are helpless. The pain is excruciating. I don’t dare to imagine what the parents of the victims feel. I don’t dare to think about the parents of the killer. All of them are tormented.
The harm is done. I pray and I hope that a prayer has enough power to send my deepest sympathy at least to one of the survivors. But the more I think about it, the more helpless I feel.

Thanks for showing us how we can show the support that many of us feel, Liz. All I could think to do before I read your post was to create a piece of art which I shared on my blog but I’m adding a link to your post now that I’ve discovered it.
Like you, I’m glad that my daughter is at college down the road but at the same time feel the pull of a parent’s pain mixed with the relief. Funny how we feel the connectivity somehow.

Mihaela,
Your generous spirit is there. Take heart from these words by Emmett Rox
There is no difficulty that enough love will not conquer,
no disease that enough love will not heal,
no door that enough love will not bridge,
no wall that enough love will not throw down,
no sin that enough love will not redeem . . .
It makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble,
how hopeless the outlook, how muddled the tangle,
how great the mistake. A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all.
If only you could love enough, you could be the happiest and
most powerful being in the world . . .
They are true. There are angels everywhere.

Hi Susan,
Thank you for sharing your art. It’s so beautiful; I’m touched to be a part of it and your life. Yes, we know one little bit of the dark . . . that’s why we stand in the sun and so value it and each other.

I think in the last 24 hours, it has finally sunk in for most, the extent of this tragedy.
Today, we are all grieving members of The Virginia Tech Community…
Mihaela Lica said
Thank you for the love and the hope, sweet Liz!
ME Strauss said
Hi Nicholas,
Hold on fast. Keep your heart open, and keep your head and heart together. That’s the only way to start the work or healing.
I care how you are feeling.
ME Strauss said
Oh Mihaela,
We own our hearts. Here’s a wish for you.

I have been thinking of you this week Liz. I lit a candle for you, your family and everyone else affected by this tragedy.
A day of silence.
There will be many talking.
There will be many listening.
And to listen we must be silent.
