Chartreuse Offers $1000 for NEW ORLEANS Story

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 10:27 pm

Prince Puts Up His Own Money

Prince Campbell got an email from Katrina Victims saying that FEMA wouldn’t let them talk to reporters. It bothered him. He posted the email on his blog, but the memory of it wouldn’t go away. He had to do something. So today he made an offer — $1000, a rental car, a place to stay, and a fine video camera to go down there and get the real story.

Look at it as a vacation that matters. . . .

Prince said. I’ll post the story on this site and some others.. . .

Let’s do something important.

The comments that followed raised the ante.

The Blogging Times would like to sponsor $250 for this noble plan of getting the truth out.

I’m in for $250. I think we can do a true citizens media event here.

Andy Hagans Link Building LLC is in for 100usd. [/cheapskate]

Several people volunteered for the job. Several more applauded the idea. Maybe as many said it was crazy and a waste of money, stating that the story has been done and that it’s easy enough to check out without going there.

I wrote the 54th comment a few minutes ago.

It seems that some folks have total faith in the media . . . that’s an interesting thought to me. I guess working in publishing has jaded that part of this Pollyanna.

My dad always said don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.

My dad was a really smart man, too. He wuold have liked you a lot, Chartreuse.

What do you think?

I too was surprised at the people saying “just read the paper.”

Yeah, Candice. That was a bit amazing, particularly how vehement they were that the idea was stupid. You might think bloggers would know a little bit about the mass media, and about how the whole story never gets told.

You also might think that bloggers might be more supportive, rather than knocking an idea in the manner that some did.

Your dad was a smart man, Liz. I’ve said the same thing to my children. I’ve been called a cynic, but we all have our own biases and filter what we see, hear, and experience through them.

No, the idea isn’t stupid. You’re right, Liz. The whole story never gets told, and what is told often gets even matters of fact wrong. I’ve read stories in our local paper that I was involved in and wondered if I and the reporter were at the same event.

That’s why I suggested going directly to the source rather than relying on a third party.

    Hi Rick,
I don’t think it’s cynical to tell your kids to make their own opinions of what they see and hear, or to tell them to get their own facts. Truth is, as you say, we all apply our own filters. How many meetings have you attended where folks seemed to have gone to a different meeting altogether, same as your reporter event?

People in publishing, I think, should learn to stand back and question the media, because we know how hard it is for a human being to be fully accurate, unbiased, unambiguous, clear, and detached while still writing our best day after day after day after day.

Your suggestion to make sure that they got to a real source was one of the best sentences on the page.

I too was amazed at the attacks by some against Chartreuse’s idea.

What’s more better than a full-rounded coverage. MSM do their thing and bloggers do theres. We’re more and more information hungry and traditional media just have to accept that the times have changed: bloggers can be on the ground reporters, providing unfiltered reportage - as I expect will happen in N.O.

Got the feeling that those journo’s don’t want us amateuers citizen folks reporting warts and all and stepping in their territory.

More coverage from a divisfied group can only be a good thing.

And good to see many getting behind it: money-wise, podcasting, video.

I’m very happy that this is being sponsored.

Since I’m more of a numbers guy (and have been consistently ticked off at the government’s response to Katrina), I’m consistently amazed that the MSM hasn’t been right there talking about progress in the Gulf and confronting the government about progress.

Instead, we get feel-good stories, which are real and I appreciate. But the disaster of Katrina was much bigger than a feel-good story.

I’d like to know what percent of the the region still doesn’t have power one year later. What about water and sanitation? How much of the region has been rebuilt? How many businesses had to close their doors because all the workers were gone? How many insurance claims are still pending? What is the progress on keeping water out of New Orleans? Did oil production ever get back to pre-Katrina levels? What about the refineries? Did the local governments update their disaster recovery plans? How prepared is the region this hurricane season?

I’m sure there are some of these answers to questions out there, but I haven’t seen much, especially from the mainstream media. I’d like to. I think there is a lot left to do in the region and we’re all thinking life is good.

Bloggers can fill an important role in answering those types of questions.

    Martin,
You’re right. It’s got to be territory protection — journalists afraid of what they might lose. Or it could be folks who are jealous they didn’t have the idea themselves so that they could get the attention. Otherwise why should they care?

Some folks don’t have the word generosity in their personal dictionary.

    Hi Scot,
I think bloggers still don’t fully understand the power of a group who has access to print in the way we do. (which may have something to do with the net neutrality battle smokescreen also)

I have the same questions you do and know there is nowhere to go for the answers. That’s why I support what Chartreuse is doing. Would that I had some cash to send along with my good wishes.
