Jumping a Tuesday Train to a Four-Day Week
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:57 am
Stop the Train! I Wanna Get On!
In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill officially changed the observation of U.S. Federal Holidays to Mondays. It took effect in 1971.
Whose bright idea was that? Mondayless four-day weeks start in the middle with no chance to catch up.
That law is another brilliant accident that occurs when folks don’t think through the implications of grand ideas before they make them reality.
Transitions back to the work week are hard enough. Starting on Tuesday is like jumping a train that refuses to stop to let passengers on.
If I’d been asked, I’d have voted for Fridays, not Mondays, off. Jumping off a moving train is easier than jumping on one.
It’s a small thing for sure, but it’s a distraction to get operations back in line. The four-day holiday weeks never fully seem to be fully on track. Guess it’s good I work at home.
I’m just sayin’ . . .
What about you?

Hi Liz - I agree. I hate the Monday off holidays. Fridays are much better. It’s not so bad now I’m working at home.
But it’s easier to get ahead and get things done if you’re off on the Friday. Catching up if you’re off on the Monday is a nightmare though.

Yep, Cath,
That’s exactly what I meant. Some of those Mondays (see, I mean Tuesdays don’t I?) I feel like that darn train has run me over.

I’m with you Liz and Cath. Plus I’m easily confused. All week now I’ll think it’s the wrong day. Today feels like Monday, tomorrow will feel like Tuesday, etc.
I also don’t like when the long weekend happens at the end of the month. That’s when I do my invoicing, and it makes my life harder. So does math, but at least technology helps me out with that one…
Ok, back on the train. (Hope your creativity found it’s way back Liz!)

Hey Liz! the remedy to this feeling of being hit by a train or jumping all around a train is that you could have just worked all weekend and on Monday too!
That is what it is like at my home business and my partner’s office.
Maybe it is fortunate that the deer ate all our green beans in the garden, I just had to keep working on apples and fall garden jobs around keeping my business going!
I’m taking the train to San Francisco for Thanksgiving - and my laptop so I can work from there!

Hey Patricia,
I did. It doesn’t help.

Hi Liz - Now it’s Wednesday already. I’ve decided to pretend Saturday is Friday. Do you think that will work?

Liz-
I couldn’t agree with you more - for all the reasons everyone mentioned. I was so confused all Labor Day week - first I’d think I had an extra day, then I’d lose 2 (not sure why but it happened).
At one point a colleague and I were in my office and it took us about 60 seconds to agree on what day it was (and we were both wrong at first)!
I vote for Fridays!
