One Degree Extra

At 211° water is hot.

At 212°, it boils.

With boiling water, comes steam.

Steam can power a locomotive.

The one extra degree makes the difference.

–Sam Parker and Mac Anderson, 212°, the extra degree, Simple Truths

One degree makes the difference. One degree that’s all–one degree. Are you willing to invest that extra degree in yourself, in business, in your brand?

Dude. Raising water from 211 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit WILL NOT make it boil. To make it boil, you have to put in a bunch more heat energy to make the transition between liquid and gas phase happen.

Or, put another way, to raise water from 211 to 212 degrees requires much less energy than to raise it from 212 to 213 degrees, because the second transition requires crossing the phase transition.

(Unless of course you cheat by holding the water under pressure.)

    Hi Science Jerk!
I love science and I know what you’re saying is right on the money. You do know you’re stuff.

Do you think that’s what they’re saying in the booK?

I was thinking it’s more of a metaphor. . . . Something to get folks thinking.

    Oh yeah, I’m a Dudette. :)

Kinda like the 1% more effort we’re always talking about here on this fantastic blog.

That’s the difference between jerks like me and the real winners in life. I always quit before giving that extra 1% that would differentiate me from my competitors. Too bad. I too could be a winner and not a whiner if I’d just give 1% more effort.

    My bad, dudette.

    Hi Simple Jerk,
You just made my night. I know if you’d just try a little harder you might get 1/2 % out of yourself and get 1/2 that would differentiate yourself from your competitors. Then you’d only be a Why not a whiner.

Big Grin. Your friendly neighborhood Dudette.

Duuude’s, that’s some hot stuff going on there ;-)

Hmmm … 1% extra effort! I hope you’re talking about 1% extra every day and not monthly/yearly.

But I guess you’re talking more about of a tipping point - you’re almost there …. and then that little bit extra tips it over… that sort of 1% effort.

    Hey, Martin,
    Howareya!
Yeah, we’re talking about just that little bit. That extra push when it’s a teeny bit inconvenient, or a hair not what I feel like doing, or an iota more that everyone else might do.

Like how I practiced my synonyms there? :)

BTW, do business books count as small office media?

you say “Practiced your synonyms”, I’ll say you butchered em to smithereens. ;-) but then synonyms are not my strong suit…

explain the btw … but yes, coincidently I’ve just chatted to Andy Wibbels and he’s sending me a copy of his BlogWild book for review. Aye, the perks of doing such a blog ;-)

I’m open to all review and cash-for-comments incentives - goods, services, cash into my PayPal account will do finely thank you very much - kidding of course!!!

I was thinking of some lists you might do on your lists site and some small office books you might feature too.

Then there’s the list of little words people should use in place of the big ones some folks choose. You know what I mean?

    use rather than utilize
