It was really fun last week. Come on and join in!

Ok, I’ll be the first since there is no starting time.

What do you think of the debate evolving around the Blog Owner and the Blog Designer?

Don’t pretend you don’t know either.

Err, I’m sure Joe’s going to be annoyed with me, but I really have no idea what he’s talking about.

I’ve been waiting for Fitzmas and following Net Neutrality when I haven’t been hanging around here or forgetting to drink coffee, so I really have no clue.

Joe’s talking about the Tech Crunch redesign.

Check out this post at rwebdesign. It will bring you up to speed on the issue. Martin brought it up last night as something he wanted to talk about too.

Getting caught up as we speak - I love firefox’s tabbed browsing for research. I saw that post earlier in the day actually while I was still gathering Net Neutrality links - considering the time difference that would be about 1 A.M Chicago time.

I just didn’t pay much attention to it since it was mostly irrelevant to me chasing the net neutrality conversation all over. Just give me a second to read - I take it people didn’t like the new design?

    Joe,
I didn’t like the old design much . . . I like the new design less. I’m not sure I know the facts about what’s going on betweeen owner and designer. I understand Rachel, the designer, did the design for Problogger and is well-esteemed.

    Liz,
From what I understand, Owner wanted what he wanted and that’s what he got.
I think he tied Rachel’s hands on the design and limited her to certain things like color, Ad placement etc.
No reason for a designer if you don’t let them design…

After he started getting comments about the new design (especially that green, which he refused to change) he started blaming Rachel because she was the designer.

Actually, I started this no so much for the design aspects as the way the “professionals” handled the whole situation.
I feel that Mike handled it in a really bad way by highlighting another designers mock-up on his blog of what he wanted. (after the launch of Rachel’s design).

You know. I’m not sure that we should be having a conversation about people here. We’re always so good about things and so positive. I don’t want to go down the road of deciding who’s a nice guy and who’s not.

I understand why you’re concerned and even upset Joe. You’re a great guy and I don’t want to make YOU uncomfortable.
    But this isn’t our fight.

Maybe I’m just being sensitive because I’ve made my own share of mistakes in the past and I think we need to leave folks a place to stand. Mike’s a professional and has only had good things to say about me. Rachel I don’t know. I don’t even know the name of the guy who owns TechCrunch.

Oh wait Is the MIKE you’re talking about the guy from Tech Crunch. I feel so stupid. :0 I don’t even know him. I thought you were talking about a different Mike.

I’m going to have to restrain myself on account of being in Liz’ house and not my own, but I feel a flood of invective coming on…

Wimping out under the criticism and blaming the designer for your own choices?

    Ghaa.

It was his freakin’ choice in the first place - if he wanted something different, he would have had something different.

    I appreciate your restraint AdLib.

The interesting point here is where is the line between the designer and the client. I’ve had problems with designers who thought they knew better before. It’s not fun.

    Where’d you go?????

  29. May 16th, 2006 at 6:46 pm
    Advice Librarian said

Mmm, there’s that - personally, I have only rudimentary design and graphics skills these days. I can do some things with watercolours and pencils that I’ve been happy with, but I haven’t done anything with computer graphics since the Commodore 64 demo scene - so yesterdys redesign was entirely from finding a wordpress theme I liked.

But I accept full responsibility for the result anyway - I’m the guy who liked the design enough to put it on my blog… so it seems a bit odd for the site owner to blame the designer for his own decision.

But we weren’t going to talk about this any more, were we? Let’s see - anyone want the answer to my little riddle on Wintermute’s blog?

I like the “what doesn’t fit” kind of question, as you can probably tell.

It highlights how people think about commonality and differences, and how your knowledge of the subject matter changes your perception of categories.

  56. May 16th, 2006 at 7:40 pm
    Advice Librarian said

Exactly. All non-visual patterns we see are fundamentally a matter of perspective, background and experience, not something inherent in collection of objects.

It highligts something interesting about the way we humans think and how conspiracy theories are created - we think in stories and analogies that are profoundly subjective, because all such collections are based on subconcious choices. Your brain has extremely efficient but limited information processing capabilities, so it tends to devote more of your available thinking to patterns you’ve experienced as giving you productive results in the past.

So based on that - how do Liz and I think differently?

Speaking of telcos - anyone have any reliable refrences for the $200-billion tac break they got some time ago “For building infrastructure”? I’ve seen that figure a LOT of places, but I haven’t been able to find an original source for it.

And does anyone know what the cable companies pay for land use rights? The telocs don’t have to pay that ‘cos of easement and right-of-way laws, so that’s a direct subsidy of them compared to cable. Plus there’s mentions of other tax breaks and subsidies all over the place, but again, not so much with the original sources.

The telcos aren’t saying a thing about it of course, since it undermines their case, but I’d like to see something a bit more substantial on it…

Mesh Conference ended today in Toronto with many blogosphere notables in attendance (Om Malik, Steve Rubel). 2 comments/questions.

    1. I learnt a lot just by reading blogs on the conference, besides the networking, motivational, inspirational talk. What would I, a non-attendee miss? Seems like everything they talk about, we read everyday from feeds! We keep repeating ourselves!

    2. Someone noticed a visible audience limitation in cultural, ethnic, or socio-economical make up. Even in a culturaly diverse city such as Toronto. And it took a person named “Lee to notice it. Guess what, nobody responded to that comment.

Hope nobody thinks I’m mean. Just trying to experiment if a comment will reach the mesh organizers through the power of the blogosphere. Believe in it!

Particularly I pointed to the fact that: Someone noticed a visible audience limitation in cultural, ethnic, or socio-economical make up. Even in a culturaly diverse city such as Toronto. And it took a person named “Leeâ€? to notice it. Guess what, nobody responded to that comment [on the Mesh blog]. [...]

But digging up the original reference for some of the figures thrown around is sometimes like nailing jelly to a wall - the references turn circular or disappear behind the Lexis/Nexis wall.

So .. everybody’s going to bed? It’s only 9:50pm here in CST-ville /// So, I guess I’ll just post random thoughts now.

    1) My cousin here in Winnipeg flew to the San Francisco conference early monday morning .. 2006 JavaOne .. I think I was more curious to why he would go, than what he expected to gain from it .. but, it’s a work thing .. Guru-School I guess!

    2) I sure wish your designer would (A) make links with some color on it to designate it and (B) NUMBER these comments, so we know when we hit refresh what the last comment we read already..

    3) Awwww .. I was kind of disappointed about the lack of discussion re: comment #(first-one) .. although, I’ve posted on 2 blogs that pretty much points out my views about it,, although I did think or reasons why I thought that way

    4) I’ve burned the midnight hours many times since April 1st, and I’m finding that at night, I seem to squint more at either my screen, or at the work papers on my desk - when I look from one to the other .. I had these computer glare eliminator glasses all along (magnetic clip-ons to my glasses) but just remembered they were in my car glove compartment .. and it fixed the glare and (and invisible dots and black noises) instantly! It’s great.

    5) Okay .. two refrigerators were on display at Future Shop .. the first one said to the other .. Eeeeeyyy .. Waaaazzaap? (like the Fonz) .. and the second one said Shaddup .. Be Cool . there’s a customer coming.

In your pre-post (which I read about noon my time) you have to put in the time for the start so I know when to come and look. You know, like a TV show.

BTW, got a nice e-mail from Charles at The Kirk Report with the answers to my dinner questions. I’d try that one again as it requires people to think good stuff and it invokes good conversation.

For everyone else on these 150+ comments - if you could take any blogger to dinner, who would it be and what would you ask. ME always comes up with the good questions.

Easy. I’ve been pre-programmed to scan. So I scan looking for something, anything that stands out. No one reads anymore. We scan. That, and when I’m off the hootch I’ve got a pretty good memory.

The assessment: what I love is the fans (I mean commenters). Go over to Mike’s blog (no, not Mike Sigers, silly!) and it’s mostly pro-Mike (well, mostly) and head on over to Rachel’s blog and it’s mostly pro-Rachel.

Don’t you just love “me too” comments. BTW, everything you say here … me too.

What about a Friday night - end of the week thing, let off some steam etc.,

Maybe you can push people a little to discuss the current issues of the week.

Either way you should pick a day and stick with - make it your own.

So. you think we need some concrete topics to discuss?

Do you think that would actually keep us on topic?

I was kind of liking the fact that folks get a chance to just dump some free flowing conversation like in a bar.

  167. May 17th, 2006 at 6:34 am
    Martin said

No not really make it concrete, more like suggest that we can comment on current topics as well as anything we want. It can still be open-ended.

Notice how the first commenter and Hart tried to talk about some current issues. Look at the design drama this week. There’s been comments on dozens upon dozens of blogs. Wouldn’t it be great if we could hang out at the bar and bring it up.

So it’s like bloggers hanging out at the bar discussing whatever they want (current issues just as much as general chit-chat).

    Just a thought.

    Don’t make me blush now.

But you’re on: before you post each open mike email me and I’ll give you what I see as topics that has engrossed the blogosphere.

See, the actual post is very brief so you can easily add and guide people like:

“Comment on any topic or issue you want. We’re a bunch of successful bloggers hanging out at the bar so anything goes. Have fun, be nice and lets chat about anything and everything.

BTW, some of the biggie issues of the week were: ….. ,….. , ….. ”

Something of that nature. Obviously, we bloggers are all passionate about blogging issues - look at this week’s storm.

I bet slightly nudging the bar talk you’ll get much more people involved, probably more passion and more buzz .. . and who knows in which direction the bar talk will go.

And it doesn’t even have to be all on the negative stuff happening.

Bullseye with the Knave. Out of respect for our host I don’t say what I really want to say here about the Knave. The Knave is the past, long-forgotten.

You’re off to work and I’m off to bed.

    Liz … you baiter :-)

Hart … Wednesday this time of the year is supposed to be cold, but it was quite sunny today … so based on that logic I’d give your Wednesday a chance and let me sleep so I can get to Thursday.

You guys are in for summer and we’re heading into winter - urrrgh. Cold, winterey mornings … actually glad I’ve set myself up in a home office for the next 6 months at least. I can hibernate and still lead a bloody blogging good life.

Have a good day folks. I’ll catch you in your prime time.
