Questions to Get Closer to You: Question 11

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 6:14 am

Get Closer to You

This is a series of questions, I don’t know how many. They are the ones I ask when I help folks get closer to their personal identity.

As you start your next challenge what do you think you will most likely get wrong? What are you doing about it?

I’ll answer first to get things started.

    Hi!
I know me. What I’m like to do is offer too much of my time to other people, thinking I can just find more for what I want to make happen for myself.

I’m taking a deep breath before I say “yes,” and thinking of how to point people in the right direction, rather than do their work for them. :)

    Hi Liz

I know myself too (a bit) and I normally calculate the time new things will take me wrongly. Like since beginning this year I’m integrating all admin systems in one - including new online shop.
Mow, because I know myself also on the area of wanting to do this properly the first time round I’ve learned to (in my impatient eyes) to overestimate the time it will take me to have everything ready and up and running.

    Boy, was I mistaken ;-)
But, happy with the result so far and carrying on one step at the time, one day at the time, on product, invoice, webpage at the time. It’ll get me there - maybe beginning next month ;-) And then it will bring only rewards (specially in time saved for the rest of the year)

    Hi Liz!

Last year, I discovered that I could keep with a single project - if I was careful - for up to 2.5 months straight. Being ADD, this is a revelation! I was delighted and excited about the implications for future work.

This year, I’ve planned to complete half a dozen such projects. Even though they’d only take up eight or nine months of the year -if- I kept up the same (very doable) pace as my last major project, I know myself well enough to question my stamina.

I’m most likely to burn out and completely lose motivation/focus for one or many of those projects.

As for what I’m doing about it… well, I’m being kind to myself! =) I’m still figuring out just what I’m capable of, when it comes to long-term projects. If I only finish four of those six projects this year, okay, that’s fine! It’s far better than none of the six. I’ll adjust my expectations for the next round and not berate myself for ‘failing.’ It’s all too easy to yell at myself for not keeping up with something, but doing that is counterproductive, ’cause then I don’t want to try -anything- for fear of failure! It’s a vicious cycle that I intend to avoid. Granted, it’s always a good thing to challenge oneself, but not in such a way that makes the challenge unpleasant or nigh-impossible.

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. =)

    Hi Kusani!
So much of doing business well is really just knowing ourselves and managing to our strengths. If we know how to do that, we become highly effective at almost anything we try. :)

    Good on you! :)

I will spread myself too thin and instead of not taking on every challenge possible, I’ll avoid sleep. :)

My new solution is to ask for help. Nothing too scary here!

    Hey Lani!
The act of writing down the solution is a lot like the act of saying it out loud. :)

    Hi Karin!
Once again I wrote an answer in my head and it didn’t make it here. Doh!

I start every new project schedule with a saying, “It’s always easier than it looks and it always takes longer than you think.”

I sure know what you’re saying.

One step at a time and lots of thought on the way. :)

moving forward if i make the same mistakes it would be in the arena of money and men,and since that’s a lifelong issue, part of me says I don’t know - however my history re: income without men in the equation probably would have had me financially stable if not affluent - if that makes sense? I think declaring my hyper focus this year of freelancing, keeping business personal and working smarter will tell if that’s the focus for me. I have had a great start to the new year - If I can keep men out of the equation maybe I can proove my theory - ha!! Truth be told I like men in my life so I don’t know if that’s going to be possible. I guess I can date them just not marry them. Gotta make these rules up as we go!!

My biggest obstacle is allowing myself to think that I am not capable of completing the task at hand. This leads to distraction, lack of motivation and debilitating self doubt. Mental head case, I know :P

I think the best action to take is to have an accountability partner that is honest, yet encouraging (hey there, Lani!)

    Hi Karen!
I think you’ve identified a problem that is more than your own. Many folks let others have a stake in their lives and don’t draw a line. I’m glad to see that you’re taking on that challenge. You are so worth the fight! :)

    Hey there, April!
You are so amazing . . . Talking yourself out of what you can do — there’s a challenge! I think you’ve found an answer that will even outsmart a great talker/seller like you are. :)

Imagine if you talked yourself into what you could do instead of out of it?!!

Cooperation… I don’t make a buck out of my blog, not enough visitors, as simple as that. But why is that? It has a lot to do with the mindset of the language i write in… ( Which by the way is not english :P ).

Anywho, as if getting people to share knowledge while not making any dough out of wasn’t difficult enough, getting people to comment… whew that’s almost impossible. Why? Because, the mindset remember, most people see the internet as a place to get the info, and do not feel inclined in anyway to either cooperate, rant, or just plain and simple say a quick hi from time to time.

Could it be me? This has me pondering! But not in a sick twisted way… Is it the way i write? The things I say? Said mindset of my target audience?

I have tried many times to reach for others to collaborate and make this project a common goal (given that said people are often aligned with it), offering control (I’m democratic like that :D), to get new perspectives and takes on the same subject… But only to find myself again by myself doing the same stuff over and over.

I have recognized that I alone don’t have the means to get the project there, quality wise… And the lack of funding makes it even more difficult.

What do i do about this all? Well, i will take a break to figure things out. This should clear my mind and let me analyze things from a new perspective. Either that or make my project a part of somebody else’s.

Thanks, i needed to vent that…

I so like that you’re turning to yourself to solve a problem that you’re having on the Internet. Most folks just look further and deeper in places outside them and somehow that just makes them feels like even less.

Sometimes the way we write, finishing up a subject too completely doesn’t leave folks any room to step in with something to add.

    I’ve written on that.
