Get Closer to You
This is a series of questions, I don’t know how many. They are the ones I ask when I help folks get closer to their personal identity.
What is thing you do for other people? How is their life easier, better, more fun because they know you?
I’ll answer first to get things started.

I’m a teacher. I help folks see what the next step is and how to get there. I give them feedback and support so they can stand on solid ground. I welcome them home so that they feel they belong.
People who know those things do well in life.

This really got me thinking…But I think I am able to brighten up their day with some jokes, my smile and just by being around them. I make their lives fun because I am always spontaneous and I can make their day that little bit happier.
Thanks for the post,
Fabien

Hi Liz
Not really sure, but perhaps I see connections between their needs and what I know/learned easier than they do and am able to help them with/point them to implement those things (software, business practises, strategies etc) in a straight forward way?
Recognising their ‘aha’ moments is very rewarding

Hi Karin!
I think you do just that beautifully. You point to the “hedgehog” model when it’s most useful and keep us ll on the right path.

Rather than thinking of what we are doing for other people, We could do our work better and try to complete that. The work and our action should be in the form of not disturbing others.Thats the great help what we are doing for others.

Someone recently suggested that my epitaph should read: “He asked the hard questions.”
If I make any difference at all, it’s because I help people to uncover stuff that matters - their talents, their confidence, their likes/loves/hates in their working lives.
For this, they call me “The Insultant!”

I give others (and my kids!) the tools to learn how to find answers on their own, instead of always presenting it smack dab in front of them.
I believe knowledge-gathering skills will benefit people much more than simply learning static answers.
My kids hate this about me.

I’ve helped a number of folks get started in computer consulting, even giving them customers.. and if someone is willing to pay for coffee or lunch, I’m nearly always willing to let them pick my brain for a short period on that subject.
I also run a free Unix/Linux consultants list - no cost at all to advertise, and there really are no strings attached.
I do eat kittens now and then though..

Hi Fabian!
I think those are fabulous things. I could use a whole lot of all of those right now.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Josh!
So, if I’m listening, you’re saying that you serve others by accomplishing what you set out to do and fulfilling your promises without getting in their way?
ME Liz Strauss said
Rowan,
What a gift to your friends and what a pain to your enemies! Asking the hard questions is something few folks do well and most folks need. Thank you for adding your questions to the world.
ME Liz Strauss said
Anthony!
Teaching what you know is a noble calling. Eathing kittens . . . well as long as I’m not buying that lunch or there to see it, I won’t judge.

Hmmmmm. This one’s got me thinking. In real life, I help my kids by driving them crazy, ahhhhh, I mean home schooling them. I figure they’ll see the benefits of my efforts and be willing to thank me in 15-20 years. Adults are helped by my work handling the finances at church. When I wear my bean counter hat, I make it easier for people to know where the money is going.
As a blogger….that’s a tougher question. I know what I want to be doing. I want to be teaching people how to be better parents, sharing the difficulties I have with the job, and share some funny stories along the way. Hey, maybe that’s the beginnings of a mission statement.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Amy!
And a mission statement gets one bit closer to a value proposition.
As Steve Farber says, “Do what you love in service to those who love what you do.”
AmyL said
Yes, value proposition! That’s what I wanted to say but I couldn’t remember the name. Lol. I am so green in business/marketing. But I’m learning.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Amy
If all of us knew everything, we’d all be talking to ourselves.
AmyL said
You’re not saying that talking to yourself is a bad thing….are you? LOL

Liz and all,
I love what Barbara said. I do that for my nine-year-old, and she hates it with a smile. Just like when my Dad used to say, Well, how do YOU spell onomatopoeia [or whatever] when I’d ask for spelling help. Hated it, but knew it was keeping me from being intellectually lazy.
What do I do? I see things for others, first from the outside and then from getting deep inside a project. I provide my Vision, and help clients to define and maximize their own.
In business, sometimes just seeing the forest for the trees is the hardest part.
Regards,
Kelly
ME Liz Strauss said
Amy,
I sure hope I’m not saying that . . . if I am I’ve got a lot of explaining to do to myself.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Kelly!
Some things you can’t ever not know once you know them. For example, once you’ve been in the forest, it’s hard not to remember what it was like not to know what a tree is. That’s where other folks come in really handy.
Zakman said
Oh My God, Liz,
I can’t think of a single person whose life I’ve made easier, better, more fun because they knew me.
I’m terribly self-centered. That is why I don’t like to come here.
You rip me apart.
ME Liz Strauss said
Zakman,
Give yourself some credit. You’ve brought wisdom here more than one time and I’ve so enjoyed talking to you.
