The Mic Is On All Day: Reflecting on Being Too Sick to Be Here

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 11:56 am

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

The Mic Is On

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

I Won’t Be Here, But the Mic Will be. . .

As soon as I write this, it’s back under five blankets for me.

Sometimes the fact that no one died of the common cold is no consolation at all.

Feel free to leave . . .

RIP

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)

Oh, and bring example links to share a link about every disease and cure that you know.

Liz, so sorry you are sick! (I didn’t mean to give you a cold!) That’s what you get for staying up late in deep conversation.

It’s just not the same without you here.

    Oh Liz what a shame!

Here’s a poem for you, by English poet Pam Ayers

It’s called “oh no, I got a cold”

    http://www.itsbullfrog.com/guests/ayres/cold.htm

    This is how it ends:

Now I’m not a fussy woman,
There’s no malice in me eye
But I wish that they could cure
the common cold. That’s all. Goodbye.

Hope you feel better soon :-)

i am so sorry you are sick, liz! i was SO looking forward to meeting you for coffee! i am always looking for the “silver lining” but your cold is making that extremely difficult! :)

    hmm… “thinking cap” time…

so the “take away” for you may be that you are reminded how cared for and valued you are by your friends. that’s a great knowledge even when you are uber-healthy-feeling!

and for me… that i got to see a little more of chicago, which solidifies my decision to move AND serves as an additional reason to get here asap. (it’s a stretch but it kinda works)

i do hope you are feeling better soon.

Liz, I so feel your pain :) I’ve been fighting with a cold since Wednesday last week. Spend the whole weekend in bed, got a little better, got to work on Monday to open windows and AC and it got worse. At least I have the next 3 days off!

The thing I hate most is sounding like Woody the Woodpecker and not being able to breathe :) And given certain stories, I am afraid of getting addicted to Olynth or other nasal stuff.

So sorry you’ve been laid low, Liz. Maybe it’s your body’s way of telling you that you need to take a rest from the frantic pace of 21st century life?
I’ve been teaching poetry this evening, so whilst I’m in that frame of mind, here’s a poem I think you might enjoy:

    Voices
    Voices in my head,
    Chanting, ‘Kisses. Bread.
    Prove yourself. Fight. Shove.
    Learn. Earn. Looks for love,’

    Drown a lesser voice,
    Silent now of choice:
    ‘Breathe in peace, and be
    Still, for once, like me.’

Hugs and best wishes for a swift recovery!

I like your idea, Erica. Here we go Liz, a top ten list just for you.

I’ll give you my how to facilitate a 2-day meeting while feeling like the living dead list:

    1. Force fluids. The last time I had to work sick (Dec ‘07), I drank 2 gallons of water in one day. Yes, this means I was up most of the night, waiting for the fever to break. This was also the night that some whacked guy called my room hoping to entice me out for a drink, but I digress. Unless I hallucinated the whole episode. It was quite a high fever.

    2. Eat. It’s not as though you’ll be sleeping and the energy has to come from somewhere.

    3. Breathe steam up to 3x day. So soothing!

    4. Snort water up to 2x day. Not at all soothing, but effective at, uh, taking out the garbage.

    Hey Liz W!
Yes the Wet Socks things sure fits with CA…don’t tell though the naturopath that told me to do it is from Oregon — same thing I guess. It goes like this:

1)wet a thin pair cotton socks with very cold water, wring them out and set aside.
    2) get a pair of very thick wool socks and set those aside too
    3) fill the bathtub with enough very hot water to cover your feet, about ankle-deep.
    4) soak feet in that hot water for 10 minutes (don’t burn yourself but get the feet quite warm/hot)
    5) immediately take hot feet out of tub, put on the ice cold thin cotton socks, pull the thick dry wool ones over that and get into bed.
    6) stay that way for an hour or just go to bed for the night.
    7) wake up and the socks will be dry, your feet will have been toasty all night, and the cold heads south much faster. kid you not:)

  27. March 18th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
    Erica Ross-Krieger said

Liz W., we can make the wet socks be on the list with your tips and with a Klondike Bar and chocolate from Joe.

Liz, I only know that it is considered a form of hydrotherapy and that the darn thing works. Next time I talk to the ND, I can get the science behind it — when I was really sick tho I only cared that it worked so I never went farther than that. The trick is keeping the thin pair cold and well wrung out, and quickly getting them onto the hot feet and into the wool socks and into bed, or reclined. I usually recruit help in getting the cold ones from a sink of ice water to be wrung out and onto my feet:)
