The Mic is On: Friends, Fans, and Mostly Trolls
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
Be On the Watch for Internet Trolls!
We meet our first friends growing up. Sometimes we find we have a fan. It’s a shock when we bump into a troll. They’ve been around since the Three Billy Goats Gruff tried to cross the bridge. You can find them in the World of Warcraft on Twitter, and in the comment box of your own blog.
Here’s a link about them and a guide to handling the problem. It’s only a few paragraphs, but it will get you in the mood because tonight it’s about trolls:
- trolls we once dated
- troll dolls & trolls in fairy tales
- trolls who interrupt Internet conversations
- ahem . . .
And, we’ll talk about whatever comes up, (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
Oh, and bring example links to share —

Hi Delaney!
How are you? How’s that blog? Did I miss anything while I was gone? (Loved that post)
Delaney Kirk said
This is an interesting topic. As you know, I have a blog that provides advice and links for professors. Several months ago, I had a person comment inappropriately and I deleted the comment. She or he then commented again saying,
“you stupid little b—-… why did you delete my comment? afraid? go and DIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE”
I then blocked the person’s IP address. But you do have to wonder what the person gets out of this?

When do they disrupt and when do they actually push the envelope to take us to a better place?

Hello Brooke and John!

Can’t wait to talk about trolls. When do they disrupt and when do they simply push the envelope?
Delaney Kirk said
Hi John,
It’s really easy to do, you meet lots of great people…actually now that I think about it…it can be addictive…you’re not obsessive-compulsive are you?
Ivana Taylor said
Are they trolls simply because they piss us off?
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Ivana,
I hate to admit that once in a while a comment by a troll has pushed me to write something thoughtful I wouldn’t otherwise have written.
Kevin Ferrasci O'Malley said
I think your troll graphic looks a bit too friendly rather than the picture in my head of the troll hollering at the Billy Goats gruff trip trapping…..

Hello and why do I feel like I’m joining really late?
Trolls are ones that like power. Especially power they believe they wield when they interrupt us.

@Ivana yes, trolls and other mystical beings are often portrayals of our inner doubts, fears and foibles. We make the gods of mythology in our own image, and likewise the monsters.
charlene said
Troll doll like the photo Liz posted earlier…
Delaney Kirk said
My approach is just to delete if I find comment inappropriate. Responding or emailing them would just encourage more I think.
ME Liz Strauss said
Ah Charlene.
The Internet troll stops by your comment box and leaves obnoxious, insulting or threatening remarks that add no value.
Ivana Taylor said
@Todd - excellent! It’s great to have a mythology and archetype master in our midst
ME Liz Strauss said
Ivana,
The picture above is of a troll doll. They’re about 3 inches tall.
ME Liz Strauss said
Heya Todd!
Love that you came over.
Rick Cockrum said
i agree with Todd. A search for a feeling of power and the use of manipulation to get it are two of the earmarks of a troll.
Todd Jordan said
Internet trolls are the ones that harass by leaving snarky, rude, or outright hateful responses to others online. Often in chat rooms, comment sections and so on.
Die hard trolls may attach themselves to an individual or small group of individuals, essentially stalking them.
Twitter and Friendfeed are two of the latest playing grounds for trolls. They bring the stalker type out worse than most.
The trolls there latch on and don’t just ruin one blog post or forum post, but the whole stream of conversation.
ME Liz Strauss said
Professor and Dr. Kirk,
Was that the first trollish comment you got in a couple of years on your blog?
Brooke said
they are just plain mean…no constuctive criticism, won”t listen to an argument, closed-minded etc etc.
Ivana Taylor said
@Charlene - how pathetic of me, I thought a “troll doll” was a slang name for a kind of girl

I thought this was a great example of comment guidelines warning away trolls. They make clear what they think a troll is and state that in any case they will decide and delete troll comments.

Liz,
Actually I think it WAS the only nasty comment I’ve gotten. I’ve had people disagree with advice I’ve given which is fine with me. And I have had ones put info that is clearly spam-like. I guess for the most part I’ve been lucky huh?

You can tell a troll by the aggression in what they say.
Delaney Kirk said
On the other hand, Liz’s topic is on fans. I’ve met lots of great people through my blog!

I don’t think I’ve ever gotten enough people to stop by my blog to attract trolls. I guess that’s not such a bad thing.
ME Liz Strauss said
Yeah, Todd,
I think every troll that lived under a bridge knew it was a troll too. That must be some of the payoff of being a troll — smarter and uglier than the rest of us.
Delaney Kirk said
Is this the time to admit I had a troll doll with long purple hair when I was a small child? Maybe I can find replacement in Google ads below (grin).
Trisha said
If I leave suddenly it could be because it looks we could have a bad storm coming here soon.

I think that the main reason that trolls survive online is the continued large influx of new participants.

Some forums love flaming. Gizmodo is one of those. It would be hard to find a troll there because it would be difficult to distinguish in the general nastiness. Yet it is hugely popular. Kind of sad. Leah Jones and I met on a social network that went nasty. We both got out of there quickly. I don’t think anyone that hangs around with Liz Strauss would be hanging around in these places.

@Liz That’s sad to hear - that SEO forums are that way.
@Rodney On a personal level, I see nothing wrong with “blocking” if someone is creepy. I understand how to do that on Twitter and Facebook. But after listening to Todd’s story, now I’m worrying about FriendFeed.

Amanda Chapel said
Liz,
“Troll” is the word weak codependent virtual groups use to fend off intellectual challenge and criticism.
FACT: Web 2.0 is a virtual machine fostering codependent group formation. It hyper-connects/organizes “like mes.” And FACT: 96% of those like you are toothless numbnuts who are as like to be seen on “Cops” as they are blogging.
Bottom line: Successful Blog etc. is anti critical thinking and will throw a lot of whip ass group magical thinking at criticism. Immature support is what they are set up to do. Immature people who need support are who they attract and mollycoddle.
Sincerely,
- Amanda
PS The 2008 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference is in Chicago today; but Liz you are talking about “trolls” because you were criticized. You should be ashamed of yourself. Ten bucks saying you’re not.
Rodney Rumford said
liz, possibly respond once and be done & then ignore them. Let’ em trash your rep… people are smart enough to see the truth…. they will ultimately seal their own fate.
karma is a bitch for the net trolls. it always catches up to them. i can think of one mean spirited video troll that is no longer employable due to his trolliness.

Good bye from me, too. I have Zoe duty tonight and must keep the trolls away from her.
Thanks for the links, Liz. They give great introductions to trolls on the net.
ME Liz Strauss said
Thank you for your comment, Amanda.
I actually plan out these posts ahead of time, by as much a 1-3 weeks. So the assumption that this post is a response isn’t correct.
It’s the same as when Shel thought I made him an SOB in response to something, but the post had been the queue for two weeks.
I appreciate your point of view.
ME Liz Strauss said
Rodney,
That’s what I think as well. Truth is you can’t change how someone thinks or monitor what they say.
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
You’re too funny! Trolling the comments.
Amanda Chapel said
Then you either plan badly Liz or as stupidly inflexible.
Yiiish.
ME Liz Strauss said
Thanks!
Todd Jordan said
Amanda does bring up one valid point; social networking tends to bring like minds together. It just as well serves to bring the sheep like masses together online as life does off.
That said, well thought out and constructive feedback is not trolling. Trolling is as much in the presentation of a thought as well as it is in the content. Also, trolls go out of their way to participate in a conversation for no other reason than to attack individuals, ideas or groups. They often enjoin themselves in conversations they’d otherwise not find themselves in.
Is it worthwhile to talk about trolls? Definitely. As I mentioned earlier, there is a large influx of folks that have never been exposed to the harsh criticism and lashings they’ll get online.
Finally, failure to respond to criticisms is not a crime, nor is it a sign of weakness. Though you might be both criminal and weak anyway.
Mike Sansone said
Battery running low….gotta go find an outlet. BBL
Rodney Rumford said
actually i use the word troll for anyone that i consider “creepy” or “mean spirited” in any online eco-system.
Remarks and comments that disagree with my thoughts or analysis does not make someone a troll… Rather it is their lack of real world social skills (or attacking nature) that lands them in my troll bucket.
Intellectual viewpoints that differ are what make the world go round… and actually can spark innovation.
Just remember that tesla was widely considered a nut job (not a troll).
Trisha said
Just for the record - I’m not a codependent of anything or anyone, I have all my teeth and I’ve never been on Cops.

@Glenda no, they are sociopaths online! LOL.
More likely severe and habitual trolls have ongoing similar offline patterns of behavior but not necessarily as open sociopaths.
Many of us struggle with social related disorders and aren’t sociopaths, or at least I don’t want anyone to know I am.

I had a comment from someone objecting to a comment made by another commenter, then ended up with an attack (called her an imbecile, I think).
So I edited the attack out, and emailed her and told her why I’d done it.
Didn’t hear back.
Not sure she qualifies as a troll, though.
Wouldn’t troll-hood depend on doing this habitually?
Sometimes people just post out of anger/hurt - we can all be forgiven for hot-headedness…
ME Liz Strauss said
Andrew and Carter,
If the atmosphere is inclusive to begin with . . . folks should have room to disagree just fine.
Listening for the thought inside the emotions is useful practice. What shows the intent is how we respond and how that response is received.
Kristen said
@Andrew - I think you are right about walking a fine line between honest criticism and trolling. But I also think trolls will often target a tight-knit group like that simply because it is a group that bands together.
I think a troll likes to be that one voice with a different opinion. That way it is easy for him or her to play the martyr….”Oh those big, bad bloggers at suchandsuch.com” And it is also easy to play the intellectual snob…”Oh those ignorant, clueless bloggers at suchandsuch.com.”

I’m part of a meditation group, and there was a guy who posted comments online that were seen as disruptive.
I think sometimes it was just a lack of people skills.
And writing in a language that wasn’t his first language.
Maybe we have to breathe a little when we have a comment that causes a reaction in us.
I know I can find flaming, etc, pretty shocking for a minute.
Then, Liz, I think you’re right - listening for the emotion behind (a la Non-Violent Communication and Byron Katie) can help a LOT.

Ok… I get it.

Hi Andrew
Beautifully written and well-thought. The tough part is getting folks to invest 20 minutes of their time. . . . Hope you get lots and lots of interaction.
Todd Jordan said
@Andrew - wow, that’s a tall order post.
ME Liz Strauss said
Now, I didn’t say I loved that MORE.

I like the way you summarise in your post. Clear and concise, but still juicy.
And Julia Cameron is one of my all-time creativity heroines.

I’m a professional feedback giver (coached 3,500+ presentations and counting) and it’s good for me to notice how feedback is *heard*…
Still laughing. Sigh.

Love the post on creativity! Have you seen Sir Ken Robinson’s TED talk videos. He is a passionate advocate for creativity in education! Here’s a link to his original and also his latest presentation:

Good night, Carter!
Yep, we have lots to keep track of these days.
Kristen said
@Angela
I have not. But that is bookmarked and on my list for tomorrow. Thank you.
I live in Jackson, Miss., and all the public schools in the city limits have removed art from the curriculum. It is so frustrating that they refuse to recognize how fundamental arts are to children’s learning and development.

Goodness, it took me 15 minutes to get through all the comments made thus far! I think trolls are those darn spammers! I’ve been seeing a nasty collection of spam that’s being held in Akismet. Then there are the content trolls who troll the internet to steal your content and put someone else’s name on it!
Todd Jordan said
Liz,
One of the best open-mic nights ever! Been some fast and furious conversation tonight.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Mary-Lynn!
It’s been an interesting night!

One of the most beguiling bits of audio I ever heard was Julia Cameron and Natalie Goldberg (auther of Writing Down the Bones) being interviewed together.
First time these two giant writing teachers ever met. They’d even lived in Taos at the same time, but kind of avoided each other.
I love interviews.

It’s a biz project I’ve been developing for the last three months. Our global community of practice is meeting to discuss/refine it for presentation to Management.
This “thing” is the key to moving our earning up an order of magnitude over the next few years, so it’s kinda pivotal. Had no idea it was that important when I started it, though. :-\
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Mary-Lynn– I’m really enjoying my week with no kids. I miss them a lot, but I’m sure enjoying my writing. Hoping to finish an ebook by the end of the week.

I got a really great troll comment today in response to my discussion of the BlogHer article in the NYT.
“We let women vote; I think we should leave it at that. I really don’t think women are suited for politics, business, etc. If there were decent money or political power in mopping, washing dishes, cleaning, etc, then women might be taken more seriously.”
Lovely!

I get trolls on my photo site once in awhile. I like to do food photography for fun and it is pretty annoying when people write things along the lines of “Whats so interesting about…” I don’t think I’ve ever shot food with meaning behind it except that I want to devour it. Haha.
Here is an example of what I mean:
