The Mic is On: It’s about Finding Clients, Customers and Sponsors
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
Where do we find ‘em? . . . clients, customers, and sponsors?
Are they. . .
- At the butcher?
- At the baker?
- At the candlestickmaker?
Would they be . . .
- With a Fox?
- In a box?
- Wearing Sox?
Mother Goose and Dr. Seuss don’t know, but we do.
And, we’ll talk about whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
Oh, and bring links about finding and serving customers to share!

Hey, this is a good question for me… I just found out I’m going to a convention next month, and I’d like to know how to recognize a contact when I see one!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Robert!
Great to see you!
What sort of convention?
Erica Ross-Krieger said
I knew/know where to find them for my other businesses. Now it’s new territory and I’m a bit clueless.
Joe said
Hey Liz,
Hey Robert,
Clients? what clients? I can’t seem to find any clients.
Maybe I’m looking in all the wrong places, like Twitter for tweeps who know more about tech things than I do.
Robert Hruzek said
Howdy, Liz! I can’t believe I remembered it’s Tuesday!!!
I’m going to RCM-2008 in Las Vegas to a convention focused on “Reliability-Centered Maintenance” It’s about helping our clients strategically plan their maintenance dollars over the life of the facilities.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Erica!
They’re not in the sidebar . . . They’re all over the net, but you have to attract them to you here.
Online the business model is upside down.
Brooke said
I’m always backstage…whatever - I am just glad to be here.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hi again, still a timely topic!
Erica Ross-Krieger said
Robert, you heard of the guy who wears a name tag everywhere he goes? Maybe you could wear one at the conference and have it say: Are you a good contact?
ME Liz Strauss said
Welcome Brooke!
You’re the star! You belong on the stage.
You know you’re here when the Headline says the Mic is ON!!
Timothy Johnson said
Hi all… I find clients and contacts all over… students, children’s school events, word of mouth…
Maybe they should make single’s bars for these things… can you imagine the pick up lines?
“Hey baby, what’s your brand?”
“Your project or mine?”
Char said
Hi everyone! Glad its Tuesday - my favorite day of the week.
Robert Hruzek said
Hi Erica! I guess that’s better than the ones that say, “My name is Inigo Montoya; You killed my father; Prepare to die!”
ME Liz Strauss said
Robert,
Sitting where folks eat and rest is a great way to meet people and start conversations.
Joe said
Liz, I thought we were going to talk ALIENS tonight. I even looked up a pic of me and Al for the occasion.

Good contacts to me arre those that I havve a good connetion with. Sometimes they become friends, sometimes accquaitences (sp?) sometimes customers, and sometimes great people to work with. They arre all VERY great!

Thanks Liz. with a new biz, I guess I have to cast a different net now — one that says hi do you want to own a healthy-oriented franchise…and I truly hadn’t thought about using the internet to gather fish…I was thinking associations, etc. Got to learn to use this medium more wisely.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Tim,
I love your approach!
It starts with not thinking that you NEED them, Right?

Off topic twice!
Did I ever mention…
I HATE VISTA?
Sorry guys, but having problems once again with Vista and speaking of non-existant customer service!

Hi Joe!
I’m sorry, you’re right I did say that. Early Atz has finally taken my brain.
Next week for sure.
I’m sending the message to Sandy now!

Yes, Rick,
Only healthy co-dependencies here!

Tuesdays are even better when its just me and the kids - I let them watch TV while I am on my laptop and we are all snuggled on the couch.

Here’s a secret I’ve found.
It’s a whole lot easier to talk to a person I don’t know if I ask that person questions about him (or her).
Brooke said
Oh Char - that sounds great. My 2 and 4 yr old won’t ’sit’ - oh well.

Of course, the eventual break-up becomes really awkward.

I agree Liz. One of my favorite ?s to ask is “In your business, what’s making your heart sing these days?” Seriously.

Hey Jack!

I am currently a junior in college up in Michigan. I decided to create a website geared towards my generation ( but its for everyone too!) informing them about real issues that matter ( example not what Brittney Spears did last night). I am very new to all of us and I was wondering if any1 has some good advice for me.

I submitted #38 before your #34 showed up…Actually, my blog has my book on it, and soon a link to the nutritional products…but for this totally new Salad Franchise biz, there’s the corporate site but I don’t have a blog related to it. Yet? Thanks for asking.
ME Liz Strauss said
Getting out to comment often gets folks to follow you home, but if it’s clients you’re looking for . . . you need to comment where your ideal client hangs out.
and your blog should look like a place where they might want to explore.

Have a beer, Jack. Fat Tire’s the specialty of the house. There also wine, vermouth, Klondike bars, a code-writing donkey, and and a cow.
(Going off track tends to happen fairly quickly and frequently, but it actually all falls together in the end).
Liz Williams said
Hi everybody. Great topic, Liz. Erica, are you still there? The fact that we both know Jean W (any 3rd person goes here) is a great way for me to make contact.
The worst possible way? A networking meeting where I have to stand up and give my elevator speech. I sound like a parody of myself. Whole set-up is like practicing for hell

Jack - if a candidate promises to outlaw Britney Spears (and any stories about her), he or she has my vote.
If they can promise the same treatment toward Brangelina, Paris, Hannah Montana, and Lindsey Lohan, then it will not be a question when I got to the polls in November.
ME Liz Strauss said
Well Jack,
Check out the “New Blogger” page in the sidebar. Listen to all of these folks and read their blogs. There’s a great crowd here tonight.

Hi Again Liz W. Yes, I’m still here for another 20 minutes, then off to a biz mtg. How are you?
ME Liz Strauss said
Erica,
So you have something to talk about. You need a smaller, maybe free, offer. Can’t lay it all out in the comment box, but ideally, you pull all you are and point it in one direction.
Brooke said
Rick - Fat Tire is still my favorite beerr - buut I am on a wine kick for 3 weeks…red wine too.

Hi All, Great topic! I agree with Tim, I find clients in many different places. Striking up conversations about my work(educator) with people in line at the grocery store, at restaurants, airplanes.
On another note-I have been experimenting with Twitter this week, and I am hooked! Char, you got me motivated!

Hi Liz
Great to see you!
Recently I’ve figured out that doing something forced like that isn’t about me. I’ve switched my mindset to “I’m doing them a favor. I’m going to say what will make it easier for them to come up to talk to me during the networking part. They’re probably feeling as shy about it as I am. I’ll give them the information they need to know I’m approachable.”
When I switch my thinking to be about them, it doesn’t feel so forced.
Erica Ross-Krieger said
Muchas Gracias Liz S. Great food for thought. You’ve given plenty! Just say the word when you need a favor.

Jack - finding peeople whoo are into politics at your age is difficult. When my husband is around I will ask hhim - he was into politics from…well…probably birth!
Liz Williams said
I’m good Erica. A business meeting on this dark and stormy night? Oy. (I’ve always wanted to use that phrase in public.) Only last week we were gloating about the sunny weather…
Liz - “you pull all you are and point it in one direction. :)” This is what makes it so easy to connect with some people, and what I have soooo much trouble with. Give me a simple idea and five seconds, I’ll complicate it within an inch of its life. It will be like the pointed man in Harry Nilsson’s “The Point.” Oy.

What sort of sponsors are you looking for? I’m thinking you might look at the sponsors on other blogs that seem to be a good fit.
I noticed tonight Wiley is running book banners at the bottom of my blog.

Liz - Dangling bait, you are! Take you up on it, I might. Found my one direction recently, I have.
Tired of talking only to myself about this, I am.
ME Liz Strauss said
Believe me Suzie,
I’ve been about to give up all day!
Do you have a newsletter or a list?
Rick Cockrum said
Jack, Erica’s right. You can’t have too much passion. Learning to use it is the trick.
Hi Mike.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Awesome, Jack. Another thought is become active on “adult” politics [sorry, no offense intended] blog. Any youth there may follow you to your blog. Hang in there. And, I just found this link http://www.businessblogwire.com/2007/10/blog_review_questions.html -perhaps you’ll find it useful.
Too much passion, is that possible?

Yeah, Liz,
Actually I was. Only because you asked me to.

Hi Karen,
Do you get a chance to know much about the people you’re calling? if you do, you can turn that cold call, into a warm hello.

Jack, see you again sometime.
Liz W., stay dry this week.

Did I mention that VISTA S****???
Sorry, I a little angry with the lack of functionality of a system that is supposed to be the best since sliced bread. :-[
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Brooke,
I haven’t had much luck doing that call them because they need my help sort of thing, but if I were to do it . . . I’d be sure I knew who I was calling first.
Then I’d offer them something that was good for both of us. (Keep in mind that the reason their site looks so bad could be that they can’t afford to pay anyone who knows how to make it look great.)
So do they have traffic to trade for advertising and a link back?
Then it might be worth it.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hi Erica, I’m pissed off!
Haven’t tweeted yet today, was about to.
Brooke said
Jack - he talked to people about politics a lot, her had debates in the house he lived in in college…that’s how he meet other political people.

Rick,
I’m contacting sponsors for SOBCon and what I’m finding is they’re open to ideas. Actually, I’ve found a unique value proposition that has them calling me. Very cool.
I’d put together an offer for the companies who are a good match for the content on your blog. If you want, I do know how “write irresistible offers.” Grin.
Actually so do you. The key is sitting on the same side of the table as the people you wnat to sponsor you blog. If you want to know more about how I’d go about it, email me. Please do.
Erica Ross-Krieger said
Glenda - whew! I get it. Angry energy is sooo much stronger than sad & sorry energy.
OK, off to coach. Bye all. Really this time:)
Rick Cockrum said
Take care, Jack. The site looks to be off to a good start.
ME Liz Strauss said
No Erica!
How could anyone be pissed off at you. You’re a generous heart and we all know that.
Liz Williams said
72, 84, hike! Wriggling on the hook, I am! And happy to be. You’ve been on my mind - in a good, coachy way, not a creepy stalker way. Emailing you now.

Thanks for a good party, Liz.

Liz - thanks for the opinion! They do havve traffic - a lot. Just a really bad website - but it’s a govt entity - so maybe they aren’t giiven a budget. But I doubt that.

Rick Cockrum said
Thanks, Liz.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Liz, wouldn’t happy, positive energy be better? Does angry energy jumpstart the process tho?
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda,
Sure, positive energy is the best. But angry energy blows the sad/sorry stuff out of the way.
Rick Cockrum said
Like flushing the gunk.
ME Liz Strauss said
Well said, Rick!
I think I saw that on a blog somewhere . . .
Karen Putz said
Well, I can’t see my desk. I have somehow let my office get out of control. Glenda has been giving me virtual kicks in the butt and making me accountable to her. So I filed some papers today and I’m still looking at reams and reams of papers, conference materials, Hands & Voices stuff, four different projects and stuff that’s buried under other stuff. How’d I get this way?
Brooke said
Liz - getting clients is not an issue. I just hae been to this site many times and think it is terrible. So I thought it would not hurt to persue.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
I hear ya, Liz! I think part of that was SADs. I’ve vowed not to do another winter without a lightbox. This winter was tough.
Suzie Cheel said
Karen I know how you feel, I am working on letting go of stuff in all areas.

Holding on is also about fear of not having enough etc
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Yep Rick, flushing the gunk. You liked that?
Karen Putz said
Glenda, I think it was a tough winter all around– I’m hearing from many others that they’ve been dragging along!
ME Liz Strauss said
Ah Brooke,
Then, for sure, do it!
What can it hurt! They might be grateful to hear from you.
Rick Cockrum said
Glenda, in parts of the world where there are frequent clouds, lightboxes are a grand idea.
Stephen Hopson said
Hi, I’m just joining for the first time. How does this open mic night work?
Karen Putz said
Suzie, tell me about this clarification process of yours. I’m interested!
ME Liz Strauss said
Stephen!
Hi!
You’re already doing it perfectly!
Karen Putz said
Hey Stephen, glad you made it!
Rick Cockrum said
Hi Stephen!
Karen Putz said
Liz– on the topic of sponsors– I was thinking of trying to get monthly sponsors for my blog. How does one figure out what to ask in terms of how much to request?
Stephen Hopson said
Hi Liz and Karen:
Okay, now that my comment made it, do I have to keep typing in the information over and over again?
What do I need to do to keep the information in the boxes above so that I don’t have to retype it over again?
Brooke said
I just have to have the mindset that they need me and I have a lot to offer. The only thing tey can say is no.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Karen,
It’s a negotiation, really. But it’s based on the page views you get and the quality and uniqueness of your content — your authority. Also in your case, I would think your unique audience.
Rick Cockrum said
Enter your comments as usual, Stephen. Hit refresh in between to keep up with the conversation (F5 works great for that).
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hi Stephen, nice to meet you. I’m impressed with your blog and your work.
Karen Putz said
My page views are averaging 4,000 per week now– I’m not sure how that compares to the average blog…
ME Liz Strauss said
Stephen,
The server is messing up. If your browser hangs, hit refresh.
I don’t comment on my own blog in the same way so I can’t help with your other question.
Anyone?!
Brooke said
Stephen - welcome. I really like your blog so far…
ME Liz Strauss said
That’s a great mindset Brooke!
It’ll be their loss if they don’t take up on your offer.
Stephen Hopson said
Well, then I guess I better “get in all my responses” before the server takes forever to submit my thoughts.
Glenda: Thanks for your lovely compliments about my blog and my work. I appreciate it. I tried to email you a response about your cafe interview of me (I’m interested) but it bounced back to me.
Liz: Hi again! Do I have to keep typing my name, email and website information everytime I want to respond to a comment? Karen Putz asked me if I saw something that said “remember personal infor”? But I don’t see it.
Char said
Stephen - it must be your browser settings. My information stays prefilled in at Liz’s all the time.
And by the way - welcome!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Stephen, I’ll email you again. Don’t know why my email address is rubbery.
Rick Cockrum said
Stephen - I think your browser needs to be set to accept cookies for the personal information to stay filled in.
And as Liz said, the server’s being funky. I just wait a couple of seconds and hit refresh. That seems to kick it along.
ME Liz Strauss said
So, Karen,
Put yourself in a sponsors shoes. If I put an add on your blog and you get 4000 page views a month. And lets say thats about 2600 visitors or so. That’s an average of about
133 times my ad will be shown every day for a month or 86 people who will see it each day for a month.
So if you think in terms of .25 a view that would be $67/mo or .50 a person would be around $45/mo.
Now, would you spend that for an ad on your blog. Can you build a story about why your blog audience is worth reaching for that cost?
Stephen Hopson said
Hi guys!!!
Rick: It’s been a LONG time since we communicated. HOW ARE YOU? I missed emailing back and forth with you. I hope all is well.
Glenda: At least you know I am interested in doing an interview with you soon! Looking forward to it.
Char: Hi there! Thanks for welcoming me. This cafe thing is entirely new. I’ve been meaning to participate for quite some time but never found the time to be here at the right time. Har har har. Karen Putz alerted me to it when I IM’d her.
As for my browser not accepting cookies…that could be. How do I fix it?
And Karen is educating me about how to submit a comment and then hit the refresh button. I guess I came at a night when Liz’s server was acting up. Oh well! At least I’m here.
Karen Putz said
Liz,
Thanks for breaking it down like that. I can see how that would be very affordable for a company in my specialized niche.
So that means I’d have to put up hundreds (or is it thousands??) of sponsored ads to catch up to Problogger?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Awesome Stephen! Looking forward to chatting with you more and to arranging an interview with you.
Erica Ross-Krieger said
Hi All,

Stephen Hopson said
So, how do I get to “remember” my personal data on this comment form? Anyone know?
Rick Cockrum said
Nice breakdown, Liz.
I’m doing well, Stephen. Two kids getting married this year, so domestic life is hectic.
Re the cookies. If you’re on Firefox - click Tools->Options. Click the privacy tab. Make sure the accept cookies box is checked. Click the Ok button to close the dialog.
If you’re on IE7 - click Tools->Internet Options. Click the Privacy tab. Make sure the slider on the left is set to Low or Accept all cookies. Medium may work too. Click the Ok button to close the dialog.
In both browsers, these settings can be fine tuned. Any other browser, I haven’t a clue.

Stephen Hopson said
Rick: Thanks. I just made an adjustment with the cookies for my IE7. See what happens now. Sounds like you’re life is full yet joyful with two of your kids getting married. Wow. That’s a handful.

Welcome back, Tim.

No worries, Tim!
What’s your secret for romancing a new client?
Erica Ross-Krieger said
Liz — I knew you were teasing — and I graciously pass the hat when here because I just adore your coaching spirit! Oh, and I will take the Klondike to go & eat it before dinner too, my favorite order to things!
ME Liz Strauss said
Erica!
I like dessert first too. It’s the only way I’m sure I have room for it.

There are several posts about him on my blog, as o decided as Des keeps pointing out i am the abundance queen i had better do more to demonstrate my success- has some good stuff each month in his newsletter.
Des mentioned you would like us to be Aussie correspondents- sounds great.

Hi Suzie!
Do you have a small concrete offer of what you do? A taste, so to speak, of maybe a half-hour consult or a short lesson to download? I’m not saying it necessarily should be an offer for free. But I am saying it should be a way that folks can sample what you do, and fall in love with your unique value.
I would love you to be Aussie correspondents for Successful-Blog!

You’re always welcome.
