The Mic is On: It’s about Guilty Pleasures!
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:10 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
What Do You Do Only for You?
What do you do that is something just for your spirit? What is solely to make you feel good? We’re talking about things that maybe have no other value. Tonight it’s about guilty pleasures:
- goofy television shows
- snack foods with no substance
- music that’s all sugar
- ahem . . .
And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
Oh, and bring links about your favorite guilty pleasure to share —
–ME “Liz” Strauss

Liz - thanks for the early feedback… I’m at that author stage of writing where I go through “self-doubt” a lot. It happened with the last two books so I expect it.
And Miss Glenda - no guilt about spending time on OMN
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hi Rick! All three together sounds wonderful!

Liz, you don’t want to know where the Champagne & Strawberrys lead one night. But it WAS my first guilty pleasure!
Tammy Lenski said
Liz - brown sugar! I haven’t tried that. How much in a glass?
My non-guilty pleasures: kayaking at 4:30 a.m. when the sun is just rising and the mist is still on the water. Playing with my dogs. Reading in the hammock on our porch while the rain pours down. Coffee alone on the porch at 4 a.m., my usual rising time. Cycling with Rod, my husband and honey. Hanging out with friends on the Internet!
Rodney Rumford said
Liz.

I kayaked for 4 hours this morning along a lazy river. What a perfect day.
Becky McCray said
Howdy, all! How did you work Jon Swanson into this conversation on guilty pleasures?
Tammy Lenski said

ME Liz Strauss said
You know, I’m surprised that we’ve never talked about this topic before!
Tammy Lenski said
Becky - The cookie dough reminded me that my friends and I used it eat it raw out of the package back in college. Gag…

ME Liz Strauss said
Sneaking that dance in, Glenda.
I knew earlier today that no one could box you in!

That was nice Liz!
ME Liz Strauss said
oh darn,
There I go being nice again.
Trisha said
Sometimes I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing.
Becky McCray said
Man, that cookie dough was good.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
No prob, Becky. I’ve done nothing productive cept email. Do I feel guilty? Nope!
Many writings begin when I’m laying in bed!
Joe said
No idea what else to feel guilty about, maybe it’s time to just enjoy sitting out on the Patio with my little lappy enjoying the conversation listening to some nice tunes with my tiki lights as background lighting and just let it flow.
Trisha said
The cereal I’m eating is good too!
Becky McCray said
Trisha, sometimes we all feel like that.
ME Liz Strauss said
Becky,
You took my answer!
It’s true, Trisha, we all do get that way sometimes.
Trisha said
@Becky - I believe you but with some people it seems as though they always know what they are doing.
Becky McCray said
Awesome description, Joe!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
; ) Liz, you saw my comment from earlier today? Now only to get the income that goes along with self-employment!
ME Liz Strauss said
apparently Suzie is stranded . . . she can’t get the blog to load again.
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda,
Suzie wants you to know she just dugg for you.
Joe said
How many times have I mentioned sitting out on my Patio? I guess that’s another guilty pleasure to add to my list?!?
Becky McCray said
Trisha, we just act like that. Oh, wait. You meant someone else… Well, they are just acting, too.
Trisha said
Liz - you are one of those people who seems to always know what they are doing.
Suzie Cheel said
Just lemon and peppers for me Joe
Trisha said
I need to learn how to act like it too!
Suzie Cheel said
I am back
ME Liz Strauss said
Trisha,
Cool is like glamour . . . it only looks good from far away!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Thanks Suzie. Hope you become unstuck soon!
Becky McCray said
Trisha, don’t tell anyone, but Liz doesn’t always know what she’s doing either. But she proceeds confidently, and with purpose. So it looks like she knows.
Becky McCray said
Suzie!! We’ve been worried!
Trisha said
I won’t tell anyone Becky.
ME Liz Strauss said
Becky keeps pushing me forward!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Trisha, my mantra - fake it til I make it! That takes you a long way.
Becky McCray said
Why does everyone say I push? I’m pushy. I’m not so sure that’s a good character trait!
Joe said
Suzie, lemon & peppers are good as long as the peppers are roasted?
ME Liz Strauss said
Becky,
We mean it in the “pushing my swing” way.
Trisha said
I’ve never been very good at faking things, but I’m getting better at it!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Liz, Becky does tend to do that, doesn’t she?
Joe said
Becky, your kind of pushy is a good kind of pushy. You are a lot like Lorelle, push to bring out the best of oneself.
Now, that is a Great Character Trait. Teaching people to do their best so they can be the best.
Suzie Cheel said
Google has just announced lively- yes lively.com we could do openmic there? like second life
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
where did everyone go? Did my deodorant just fail again?
Trisha said
Well, I did redesign my site and maybe it looks like I know what I’m talking about.
Becky McCray said
You guys have a nice way of putting a spin on it. I can’t deny that I’m pushy… so I might as well try to make it as positive as you make it sound.
Trisha said
I’m still here - no deodorant problem!
ME Liz Strauss said
Thanks for mentioning that, Trisha.
I think your new site design looks fabulous!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
I’m not so sure about that, Trisha!
Becky McCray said
Trisha, that does look like you know what you’re talking about!
Trisha said
Thank you Liz! I still have a few pages to change over tonight though.
Becky - so you think I can convince people I know what I’m talking about? I really do feel like I’m faking it sometimes.
ME Liz Strauss said
Trisha,
It’s not faking it to still be learning.
Suzie Cheel said
Trish great site- did you do it all by yourself?
Trisha said
Well, I’m definitely still learning!
Becky McCray said
Trisha, of course! The secret is that you really do know! Start by making a few lists of the amazing stuff you know. List off your skills, capabilities, etc. You’ll surprise yourself!
Trisha said
Suzie - yes I did. I’d pay someone if I could afford it. I’ve been concerned that someone else might be using a red half circle like that though. Some kinks need to be worked out.
Trisha said
My plan was to have all up over the weekend, but I got stung by a wasp on friday and it got infected and threw me off a bit.
Suzie Cheel said
I am trying to decide if I will do it myself or pay someone. the red half circle is amazing
Trisha said
It would have been easier to pay someone, but I didn’t feel like I could afford it. Citiback, I think, has something similar. but unless someone comes after me, I’m sticking with it! Then maybe I can pay someone.
Suzie Cheel said
wow a wasp- not nice did you satrt from scratch or with a sandbox?
Trisha said
the sandbox thing - are you talking about the site, as in with search engines?
Trisha said
I didn’t actually see what stung me - I was trimming back a butterfly bush and just suddenly felt pain in my little finger. Then, yesterday I looked under the bush and found a paper wasp nest, so that had to be it.
Trisha said
the funny thing is - we spent a few hours that day hiking/walking at a nature preserve place - had no problems with any nature while we were there. Then I get home and right in my front yard I get stung.
Becky McCray said
Ouch, Trisha! Ouch!
Suzie Cheel said
@ Trish yes
ME Liz Strauss said
Trisha,
That sting sounds awful!
ME Liz Strauss said
Suzie,
I tried a sandbox template once and found it more difficult than just starting with a simple template and modifying it.
Trisha said
I’ve actually had that domain/site for a long time - before the sandbox existed. So I managed to avoid that. Figuring out what to do with the site or how to do it - that’s been the big challenge for me!
Becky McCray said
My husband is making me laugh with a huge exaggerated story about what the cats did with my credit card when I lost it in the house!
“Why do we have 13 scratchy toys???”
Trisha said
I was thinking of a different sandbox, didn’t know about ’sandbox templates’.
Becky McCray said
Sorry! Just had to share.
Trisha said
Becky - that sounds like something my husband would do. We have 2 cats that are always getting into something!
ME Liz Strauss said
#206
Becky,
Because 12 wouldn’t cut it.
Trisha said
I modified either the default or classic WP theme to match the rest of my site. Initially with the old design though.
Becky McCray said
Now the cats are saying, “Go ahead, go on vacation. See if we care.” I suspect they are planning to order more stuff while we’re out!!
Becky McCray said
Sorry to share my insanity with you. My husband’s stories must be one of my guilty pleasures!
Trisha said
They like to have big catnip parties when no humans are around too
ME Liz Strauss said
Becky,
I think you might be a weird story magnet.
Joe said
Nothing special happened tonight
Just some guilty pleasures within our sight
No real big suprise of what they were
Stawberrys, Champagne, and a Chocolate stir
Threw them all together in a big mix
And we all ended up getting our favorite fix
Then things started a changin
I got lost just like a swamp cajan
We added new things and great tastes
But remembered not to use them in haste
And once again that Ms Glenda & Tim
Danced to the door drinking some gin
Once again a guiltless night was had
Sharing even guilty pleasures, but never bad
So we should all be on our toes
Cause what next week brings, no one knows?
Burma Shave
Nite Liz
Nite All
Becky McCray said
Trisha, if the cats are inviting you to these parties, I want to know!!
ME Liz Strauss said
Excellent!
Good night, Joe,
Sleepy swell!
Becky McCray said
Another masterpiece, Joe! Thank you and good night!
Trisha said
Sorry Becky - I promised I wouldn’t tell!
Trisha said
Good bye Joe!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Great one, Joe! Thank you.
Becky McCray said
Trisha, what did they promise to buy for you???
Trisha said
They didn’t - they just shared the catnip with me
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
speaking of web designs, has anyone ever tried rebranding a blog - much like Wendy Piersall did?
Trisha said
I haven’t, I would hate to have to change domains. If I ever had to do it I would I had enough money to pay someone to do it all.
ME Liz Strauss said
Suzie was lost again!
She said to tell everyone “Good night!”
Trisha said
would hope i had enough money - getting sleepy
Becky McCray said
Good night, Suzie, where ever you are!
Becky McCray said
I’m getting more enjoyment than should be allowable from my new camera setup. This DSLR may qualify as a guilty pleasure.
Trisha said
Good night, Suzie!
Trisha said
I’d love to have a better camera!
ME Liz Strauss said
I could use a good camera soon!
Meanwhile I’m doing something special with an eBook on my real writing. It’s my guilty pleasure right now.
Becky McCray said
Trisha, I really saved up to do it. And I use my camera a bunch, so it seemed to make sense to splurge on it.
Becky McCray said
Liz, is it something special you can share a bit more about???
Trisha said
What is your real writing?
Suzie Cheel said
came back good night all,
@ glenda would you want to rebrand? I think I would spin a new site off. Also ask your readers. Think Wendy may have lost some of here regular readers as she is not there regulary , but a VA is- i don’t understand emoms seemed to be a good brand?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Suzie, not sure what I want to do. Feeling stuck and disjointed. But, I know I couldn’t write for a third blog.
Delaney Kirk said
I know I’m late to the party but it’s my birthday today! And I’m eating chocolate fudge cake!
Trisha said
Happy Birthday Delaney!
Delaney Kirk said
Liz, Thanks for the definition on social media. Timothy Johnson and I will be using it in our journal article we’re writing on blogs.
Trisha said
Suzie - Wendy said she had lots of people coming to the sites that were dads and a lot of people without kids, so the name didn’t seen to fit anymore.
Becky McCray said
Happy Birthday, Delaney!
Delaney Kirk said
Thanks Trisha. My boyfriend gave me an old Roman coin about 2,000 years old. Way cool!
Delaney Kirk said
Thanks Becky!
ME Liz Strauss said
Happy Birthday, Delaney!
Chocolate fudge cake yeah!!
Becky McCray said
Glenda, you have so many ideas, you just aren’t sure which way to turn. Maybe it is time for some time to focus on a direction?
(That’s me being pushy again)
Trisha said
Cool!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Becky, yeah, that’s probably it. There’s just so much I want to try! But, yes, I need a direction and a road map!

I’m getting pretty sleepy. And I still have a few things to do before bed - like feed the cats!
I’ll stop by before I shut down and see if anyone is still here though.
Bye - for now anyway

Suzie, yes, I’ve been meaning to do that! And from there I want to write my “Work with Glenda” page.

Good night, all. Thank you all so much for some fun time this evening. Big smiles to you all!

Yeah, Suzie,
One of the things I learned in publishing is that you can add things, but you have to be really careful about what you remove.

Hello…
I feel a bit like an out of towner walking into a local pub.:) My guilty pleasure is obviously staying up way too late as it seems that everyone has left the party.
I was sent here by a friend - bj at kick ass web design - who thought you guys might be able to give some insight to a newbie - Yesterday I had an offer to do a guest blog on the website of a magazine that is the perfect fit for my niche. They want a weekly blog that will link directly to my blog. They want me to do this for FREE.
On one hand it would be good advertising for my site, on the other hand, it’s working for FREE. Any opinions out there??
My website is cactuscreekdaily.com - any comments are welcome!!
