The Mic is On: It’s About Weird Dreams and Nightmares
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
Do you have sleeping dreams that you remember? Weird ones, scary ones, ones that could be made into a movie? Ever had a recurring dream that came back over and over, or dreamed about the first person you loved years ago?

Tonight it’s about weird dreams and nightmares:
- dreams that stick with you after you wake up
- dreams that move you to action
- dreams that you knew you were sleeping while you dreamed them
- dreams that came true or told the future
- ahem . . .
And, we’ll talk about whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
Oh, and bring links about weird dreams and nightmares to share!

I had a dream a few nights ago that I lived a round house. It was really cool!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hi Liz, this could get scary!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Trisha!
Wonder what it looked like.
I was in a geodome once, it was like a rabbit hole.
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda,
I’ll be sure to leave the lights on!!
Susan Reynolds said
Hi all! In my latest dream daughter #3 was abducted by a cult while I was laying tile on a ship. Oh sure makes perfect sense. What???
ME Liz Strauss said
Susan,
What color was the tile? [grin]
ME Liz Strauss said
They say all people in our dreams are really expressions of our “selves.”
Joe said
Hey Liz,
Hey All,
Scary dreams huh? I can’t tell you mine because it involves Tuesday nights!
Trisha said
My round house was white and had at least a couple of stories.
ME Liz Strauss said
Seriously, Susan,
That sounds like it was a scary one for sure. Did you happen to have a tile knife with you and was the ship modern?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Thanks Liz. Some of my dreams are so bizarre, I don’t think even a shrink could decipher them.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Joe!
How bad could a Tuesday night nightmare be?
Susan Reynolds said
And my latest fave photo of sleep related activity is
not sure
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalechumbley/2667063954/ tho it may be friends only
But I know you’ll love this one of granddaughter 2.2 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ephemeria/2536459471
ME Liz Strauss said
Trisha,
Your round house sounds beautiful. Was it near water?
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda!
What sort of scary are your dreams?
Susan Reynolds said
White tile, all necessary tools, but my walke talkie didn’t work to get questions answered on pattern for tile
Trisha said
I don’t think there was water near by - I think it was a wooded area.
ME Liz Strauss said
Oh, Susan!
No communication — no walkie talkie, no Twitter!
Did the boat start to list?
Trisha said
I know I’ve had more interesting ones, I just don’t remember them now.
Joe said
My nightmare was that Liz, and Glenda and Susan and Trisha and everyone else got mad at me for something stupid I said, AND THEN Chris Cree and Starbucker showed up and dunked my head in a vat of Klondikes.
Not as nice as it sounds either!
ME Liz Strauss said
Trisha.
I had a feeling there would be trees . . . and plants?
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Hello everyone! When I was a kid, I had nightmares of falling off a high platform. I don’t think I’ll be taking up skydiving anytime soon.
ME Liz Strauss said
Susan!!
Emma’s hat is gorgeous!
Emma is one sleeping beauty.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Joe, isn’t that a fantasy more than a nightmare– to be dunked in Klondikes?
Trisha said
Joe - we wouldn’t get mad at you!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Karen,
I used to have a bridge dream about the steel beam bridge across the Illinois river. Even though I was still a child, I was driving it and the last 1/3 of the bridge was gone. I’d have to hit the gas to jump the air to the other bank!
Susan Reynolds said
Poor Joe. And hey that sounds like something GLENDA would be involved in
And Emma is a pip, that’s for sure. The HAT is outrageously funny.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Ok, since you asked, Liz - one that I still remember was about project by Barbara Striesand [who I don't even really like] to help poor people. They were raising goats, but human kids were running up and taking bites out of the goats’ sides. So they crossed wolves with goats - wolf heads and sheep bodies. That way the goats could bite back.
I told ya, bizarre!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Liz, I don’t like going across that bridge on the way to Michigan. It’s so high up!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Joe!
Death by Klondikes. Doesn’t like a happy dream to me either.
Joe said
Here’s another one… I ran a contest on my blog and had three great prizes and ONLY three people showed up to play.
I had to decided who got what prize and couldn’t so I just ran away screeming that nobody loves me!!!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Susan, Emma is such a cutie!
Susan Reynolds said
Karen you can go to Second Life and jump off the Eiffel tower with a parachute, just to get used to the idea - it’s pretty realistic.
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda,
Creative problem solving — not bizarre in a dream at all. Did it work out in the end? Did you find out?
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Glenda, girl, I’m sending a therapist over.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Karen, I’m frequently falling in my dreams. Should I admit that publicly?
ME Liz Strauss said
Susan,
That’s a great idea. As I get older, I find so many things I used to be afraid of no longer scare me.
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda,
Lot’s of folks dream about falling . . .
Susan Reynolds said
OMG all of you, ROFL!
Trisha said
Joe - I was going to enter that, but I’m so slow at writing I’d still be working on it.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Susan, that sounds like a safe alternative!
ME Liz Strauss said
Ah Joe,
That’s not a scary dream. That’s what happens to everybody so time or other.
Trisha said
I’m not good with heights.
Susan Reynolds said
@badwolf aka Kate Reynolds aka daughter 3.0 says to pass on that she had a dream that she met Harry Potter and then she uninvented paper. (strange genepool here)
ME Liz Strauss said
Oh Trisha,
I’m learning to get over my fear of unenclosed heights. It’s the wind blowing that I don’t like.
Susan Reynolds said
SO Liz you may be able to go over the bridge to the UP someday?
To visit the blackflies.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
I don’t know, Liz. But that one stuck with me. Others are very dark, scary. Sometimes I know I’m dreaming but can’t wake up or I’m partially awake but can’t move. You really want to hear about this??
ME Liz Strauss said
Susan,
Daughter 3.0 sounds like a product of her genepool indeed. Uninvented paper — how cool is that!??!!!
Susan Reynolds said
Glenda do you have those that run into one another? I do for about the last 2 hours before I wake up - as I doze back off - or it seems that way.
Susan Reynolds said
BTW Joe are you in charge of Klondikes tonight?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
yep, Susan.
Suzie Cheel said
Hi everyone, I can see as Susan did lots of ROFL
Raining in paradise and as I can see Glenda here I won’t be staying long as I need to finish incomplete stuff from Vancouver .
Brooke said
#31 - JOE - those 3 articcles were soooooooooo good! That’s all you needed!
Joe said
For serious though, I have dreams all the time about my best friend (he died 20 yrs ago) and my aunt (she died 15 yrs ago) my uncle (he died 12 yrs ago) my Mom (she died 2 yrs ago) and Pop (he died last yr).
They’re all still alive and well when I dream of them and we are having fun, but they always seem to be trying to tell me something, I just don’t know what.
For real.
Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night during one of these dreams.
Susan Reynolds said
Glenda and I need our own dream therapy group.
ME Liz Strauss said
Klondikes! Everyone, what flavor would you like?
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda,
Feel free to talk about whatever you want. That’s what we do.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Suzie!!
Ever had a dream on the beach?
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Brooke!
Great to see you!
Suzie Cheel said
@ Glenda & Susan
Have you tried keeping a Dream Journal?
Susan Reynolds said
Joe maybe they’re trying to tell you they are happy. Or is that too simple? Who’s the other psych major here; I want to pass.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
When I was in high school, I used to have this dream of finding out that someone had cancer and then losing them. The dream popped up here and there through the years. It was always faceless.
Six years ago, we received a phone call. My husband’s best friend was diagnosed with melanoma. He passed away three months later.
I haven’t had that dream since.
Marti said
Good evening! I dream of having everyone in my family healthy again. And living in my own house again.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Brooke said
I dreamed as a kid that all my teeth fell out onee by one buut really fast. Guess what? In a few month period I lost alll my baby teeth…
ME Liz Strauss said
Wow! Karen,
That’s some story!
Susan Reynolds said
Suzie, I just wind up telling my marathon dreams to the daughter who’s here being my nursemaid & therapist
and generally pretty smart. And mine aren’t normally very dark - just they go on like miniseries where one scene has nothing to do with another.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Hi Marti, Suzi and Brooke!
Trisha said
Sometimes I have dreams with my dad in it, and it isn’t sad or anything.
ME Liz Strauss said
Brooke,
You’re a psychic!
Really though, I think we release information we already know when we dream.
Marti said
Good evening Liz, Tricia, Glenda, Susan, Karen, Suzie, Joe. Brooke. Hope I didn’t miss anyone…
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Marti!
Welcome!
Susan Reynolds said
Hi Marti.
And Karen isn’t that odd, I never had a cancer dream, either before or after diagnosis. Turtles, ships, orchards, no cancer though.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Marti, how’s the hubby? And what’s this about moving back home?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Suzie, a Dream Journal? I’d never get any work done. Oh, and when I take the cough syrup with codeine, holy smokes!
Brooke said
So true Liz!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Susan,
I almost hesitated sharing that dream.
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda!
Codeine doesn’t make dreams. It makes hallucinations!
Joe said
Hey Liz, would that picture be that of a son of a son of a Blogger?
Marti said
Hi Karen. Hubs is seeing slow but steady improvement - thanks for asking! We are living at his mother’s right now, as it is easier because she is already set up with safety grab bars and all on one level. Plus I was here every day as her Parkinson’s caregiver, so it’s easier for me to take care of them both under one roof.
Hope this finds all of you well and having wonderful dreams come true!
Trisha said
Marti - how is your husband doing?
Brooke said
Hey Marti!!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hi Marti, good to see you.
Susan Reynolds said
Gosh Marti that’s got to be hard. Both of them have to be a trial for you. I hope at least daughter’s out working!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
well Liz, whatever they are, they aren’t good.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Marti, you have your hands full!
Susan Reynolds said
Karen do you find your family members have similar dream patterns? Mine seems to - the kids and I at least but not @condopro - his dreams are always probably about boards, and owners and developers
ME Liz Strauss said
You know that you’re working too hard when you’re dreaming about work in detail.
Marti said
Oh Susan what a kidder you are - LOL
Daughter is holding down the home fort, taking care of her cats and learning to live independently. She has never learned how to drive so she just stays hat our house. we visit every day, and I think it is good for her to be learning the responsibility of taking care of herself and a house. At least that is what I tell myself when I miss her
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Susan,
I’ll have to ask my kids to share more of their dreams. I just realized that they never really share their dreams. My youngest had one last week that involved fighting– probably because of Halo 3!
ME Liz Strauss said
Karen,
It was always interesting to hear my son talk about his dreams. The conversation always got into who we are.
Marti said
I had a dream that several nubile young men were carrying me around Cleopatra-style at a Mediterranean market. Hmmm…wonder what that could mean? LOL
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Susan, hubby never wants to hear about my dreams cuz they’re weird.
Susan Reynolds said
Karen, my daughters and I are sharers - when we have a dream that we think is bizarre (or see a cute guy somewhere) we’ve always told each other about it. The guys in the family not so much. But we also all 4 kind of intuit what’s going on with the others too, so secrets are hard to keep
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
My favorite dream was a hot romance with Patrick Swayze, shortly after Dirty Dancing came out.
::::fanning myself:::::
ME Liz Strauss said
Ah Glenda,
My husband is like that. No patience for what he doesn’t get as logical on the first go.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
wow, Google ads work fast. Look at the ones down below.
Trisha said
Hmmm. nubile young men. can I borrow one of your dreams some night?
Marti said
Karen, I think many of us had that dream *grin*
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Susan, I’m just now asking my daughter about her dreams. She’s got me on hold, waiting for a commercial as she’s watching “The Secret Life of an American Teenager.”
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Men, eh Liz!
Susan Reynolds said
Glenda, that’s really HARD! And you remember your dreams quite vividly it sounds like. Poor @condopro is just forced to listen to us talk - or shuts his ears like dads seem to have a talent for after awhile.
Marti said
Of course, Trisha!
Marti said
Do y’all dream in color? I’ve heard of people dreaming in black and white but never met anyone who did.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Marti,
Did your dream include dirty dancing without clothing? LOL
ME Liz Strauss said
About every 3-6 months, some famous person I never think about — often someone I don’t even like much — will have a role in one of my dreams.
Susan Reynolds said
I was about to quip that logic is overrated, Liz, but I don’t believe that really. I just think there’s a lot more there than that.
Marti said
Karen, I don’t know if I can answer that on grandma’s computer - LOL
Brooke said
I have dreamt (sp?) is b/w
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Yes Susan, the ones I do remember are quite vivid and somewhat disturbing /puzzling. Oh well.
Brooke said
Maybe it’s sepia or reallllllly gray.
Brooke said
Those are my nightmares. People chasng me. I hate them. They take me a while to wake up..
Marti said
Liz, are these celebrities that you’ve met in person?
Joe said
I think I may have to take my leave, what with all these womanly dreams.
I don’t know how to handle myself (no pun intended)!
ME Liz Strauss said
Susan,
I agree. Dreams seem to be another dimension. What if this is the dream?
Susan Reynolds said
Brooke, like 40s movies maybe? . . but without subtitles
Now THAT would be funny!
Suzie Cheel said
sounds wonderful Susan
@ Glenda- Rod Stewart too- Are you sailing?
Marti said
Oh Joe, tell us of your man dreams…do you dream about business, or vacations, or techno stuff, or sci-fi?
Susan Reynolds said
Joe we’ll miss you. I haven’t “seen” you in forever.
Becky McCray said
Howdy, all! What interesting dreams you all have!
Trisha said
Sometimes I have celebrities in my dreams too - people who I hardly know who they are or even have any interest in.
Marti said
Hi Becky!
ME Liz Strauss said
Trisha,
They must go from my head to yours and yours to mine. Celebrities looking for work.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Howdy Becky!
Susan Reynolds said
Gosh Glenda and Brooke, I don’t want to have your dreams. Mine are just offbeat but not threatening. Maybe I’m too scared in the back of my mind during the daytime to be able to survive being scared at night too?
How about this - Maybe you can think about tile being laid & walkie-talkies before bed & have some less intense ones.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Becky!
How’re your dreams?
Marti said
Liz, I heard a psychic say that we are the ghosts to those on “the other side”.
Susan Reynolds said
Hi becky! Do you have girly dreams or the kind I have where odd stuff happens having nothing to do with cabana boys?
ME Liz Strauss said
Marti,
I wouldn’t think that folks on the “other side” would care much about us anymore. But some folks think the exact opposite of what I do. So who knows?
Trisha said
Mine aren’t looking for work - they’re just kind of there.
Trisha said
I wonder if we will all have weird dreams tonight after talking about this?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Susan, it’s not every night, thank goodness. Sitting here, talking about them, I’m now wondering if there’s any connection to my monthly cycle - not to scare off Joe more.
Susan Reynolds said
And PS people we’re supposed to have links. I can’t be the only one.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ephemeria/2536459471/ Who’s got one that can beat sleeping miss Emma in the mondo hat?
Becky McCray said
Wow! Marti, Liz and Susan, all in one place!
My dreams…. weird to think about talking about dreams in public!
Marti said
I often have a strange subject for my dreams, then the next day I will see or hear something about that odd thing on the news. Not scary stuff or knowing when someone will die, just curious subjects, like dreaming about the zoo and seeing a news story the next day about the zoo.
Brooke said
Susan, I only have nightmares about 1x/mo. So it’s not bad. To tell you all the truth I don’t remember my dreams very much.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
#127 Interesting thought, Marti. Let’s see how that plays out tonight!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Marti, let me know when you dream of a series of numbers. I’ll buy a lottery ticket.
Marti said
Tricia, good observation!
Susan, what a beautiful baby! She looks like she is having sweet dreams under that hat!
Marti said
Will do, Karen! *grin*
Susan Reynolds said
Marti to hear her mother tell it she never sleeps during the day so this was photo-worthy. At least she knows what night is - I don’t seem to have that knack as most of us know.
Becky McCray said
Here’s a dream link. It’s a pic on Jon Swanson’s son asleep…
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jnswanson/2390473014/
ME Liz Strauss said
I have lots of dreams about elevators, cars, and trains. Sometimes all three in the same dream.
Marti said
Brooke, remembering dreams is something you can train yourself to do. If you awaken from a dream, try to remember as many details as you can, maybe (as others suggested) keep a journal.
Susan Reynolds said
Li it’s because you’re a woman who’s going places. Probably always have been off to something, right? Even if it’s just your mind darting to one thing or another.
Todd Jordan said
Wow. Sorry I’m late to the conversation or is this just a nightmare about being late?!
Marti said
Probably because your mind is so active, it is looking for transportation, Liz!
Todd Jordan said
I used to dream about being a secret agent years ago…darn where have those dreams gone?
Todd Jordan said
Hey Marti, Liz, Susan and more,
How is everyone’s dream life?
Susan Reynolds said
Todd are you wearing clothes in the dream about being late? Because from what I can see - um - -
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Todd,
If you have your clothes on, it’s probably reality. In a dream you’d be naked too. :P)
Todd Jordan said
Glenda,
How’s life up North?
Becky McCray said
Todd, aren’t you dreaming of tomorrow? Isn’t that something special??
Marti said
Hi Todd! Are you seeing the takeover of Anheuser Busch in your fair city as a nightmare? Sure made me sad to see a fine Missouri institution sold to outside interests.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hey tojosan, hugs.
Todd Jordan said
Hey Becky,
Tomorrow is just another day really. I’ve not made an effort for anything special, though my wife is going to come up to work and join me for lunch.
Susan Reynolds said
Oh oh, Liz and I are on the same wave length as far as clothed dreams and being late
Todd Jordan said
Busch being taken over is a NIGHTMARE. It will color the face of life in St. Louis for years to come. Heck, I’d dare to say folks will be talking about it as a city altering event in years to come.
Todd Jordan said
Clothed dreams?
Trisha said
Colbert Report had a funny story about the Anheuser Busch thing.
Susan Reynolds said
It’s a wonder we dont all have Social network nightmares. Like being Plurked!
Brooke said
Thanks Marti! Good tip.
Well - I gotta run! Thanks for the fun and I hope to see you all next week!
Todd Jordan said
I kept a dream journal for several months. You actually get more proficient at it with practice. Also, when you become more aware of your dream life, it becomes much richer.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Todd, it’s warm up here. I’m fighting my melting point right now to be here.
Teeg said
LOL I’ve dreamed I was plurking before.
ME Liz Strauss said
Now this conversation is starting to sound like the old Open Comments.
Huh?
Trisha said
Sometimes I get confused here and think I only have 140 characters to use.
Susan Reynolds said
Busch being taken over is like the football team leaving in the middle of the night. It’s a culture.
Todd Jordan said
I don’t have nightmares about social networking but I do have worries. I sometimes worry about being lost in the shuffle and dropped by the way side.
Marti said
Goodbye Brooke - sweet dreams!
Susan Reynolds said
Liz I think I hear a donkey. Oh wait that’s just one of Wanda’s Goats - er sheep - well whatever they were.
Todd Jordan said
Is that good or bad Liz?
Susan Reynolds said
Bye Brooke, and I know what you mean about the limit of 140 Trisha, At the same time it does make us more concise (well some of us
)
Becky McCray said
Sheesh. I need a Klondike. And something from the sidebar. What’s the drink of the night?
Trisha said
I feel pretty confident that I have been ‘lost in the shuffle and dropped by the way side’.
Todd Jordan said
rum and cokes work for you Becky?
Teeg said
Todd, I think as long as we have real friends on the social sites, we won’t get lost in the shuffle.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Susan, they were woats! and, who is Wanda??
Todd Jordan said
Trisha,
It’s a very small line to cross-over. Heck, take a day or two offline and peeps act like you’ve died. Ha.
Trisha said
I think they should have made it 150. Its just a nicer number.
Marti said
Grandma is starting to question what I am doing on her computer, so (sigh) I have to go now.
It has been a dream come true to get to chat with all of you! Sometimes I have nightmares that I am going to lose all of my Internet friends for lack of posting anywhere.
May peace and joy be with you all!
Susan Reynolds said
Todd, I do too. And the social networking landscape is changing, people moving on to new things. We can only do what we can do, and hope that’s enough, but not being able to do it all is something that’s a personal struggle I’ve faced for awhile & not adapted well to. It’s hard to know the limits and be willing to not do what we just can’t - or what’s too much of a stretch.
Becky McCray said
Todd, rum and Coke sounds just fine!
Trisha said
Todd - that’s just it - I don’t think anyone would notice if I left.
ME Liz Strauss said
What do you mean, Todd?
Susan Reynolds said
Trisha, worst is Plurk where when I was having surgery #2 my “karma” plummeted. Sometimes I think that’s pretty indicative of what is really going on with some of the players in the soc med space if they dont see you or hear your name.
Todd Jordan said
Take care Marti. Hugs.
Susan Reynolds said
Night Marti. And you know where I say Grandma can put her questions about HER computer. Slavery has been outlawed tell her.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Oh my… a dream just came true… I’m going to be writing for Chicago Moms Blog!
Trisha said
I kind of gave up on plurk - I think they make your karma go down too fast if you’re away for a while. On the other hand, the karma isn’t really that important.
Todd Jordan said
151 is a good number too.
Being mostly offline for vacation a few weeks back made a serious dent in my online life. Blog hits bottomed, emails dropped off, and it was difficult to get back involved. More than one person was even in stub mode about it.
Trisha said
Congratulations Karen!
Todd Jordan said
Woot Karen!! Way to go.
Susan Reynolds said
So if we’re not stars of the socmed space we can be forgotten in a hearbeat. But are those people who would forget us really who we should be measuring ourselves by? it’s easy for me to say to someone else, but I feel the same unease with the way the system works now.
ME Liz Strauss said
I don’t know. I have to stay grounded more so that I can fly in my head when I need to. That’s why I keep things going on this blog more than anywhere else.
Susan Reynolds said
Karen that is wonderful. Wow what a great accomplishment.
And Trisha, I’ve decided to Plurk a few times a day to understand how it evolves so I can be up to date on it, but I just can’t keep up the conversations with the drop-down menus. Who has the time.
Todd Jordan said
Susan,
You’re right. I should measure myself by the quality and loyalty of those that hung in there.
Another nightmare of online life isn’t just losing gains, but losing ‘friends’ because you’re not interested in passing frets.
Susan Reynolds said
Todd I’m a doofus - I don’t know what stub mode is even.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Congrats Karen!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Thanks all, I’m really flattered they asked me as there are some great writers on there.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Susan, I was thinking the same thing…”stub mode?”
And Todd, I was feeling the same way last week and just now getting back into writing.
Trisha said
I have kind of an announcement too! I’m going to be blogging at HerProBlog.COM, which just launched today.
Todd Jordan said
Liz,
Being grounded is always key. Each of us needs to find that solid base to build on and work from.
The real success isn’t about each thing you do being a success, but to keep working through the dry and lonely spots. Success comes to those that keep going.
Becky McCray said
Susan, I can understand that.
I’ll be offline for over 3 weeks in August. Will you remember me when I get back? Of course, all of you here who know me, will remember.
The people who added me on FriendFeed because Chris chose to put me in his article, those folks won’t remember why they ever added me.
The small town small biz people who are excited to have someone who shares their perspective will be glad when I return.
And that is more than enough of a lecture from me tonight. Pass that rum and Coke, Todd!
Todd Jordan said
Trisha,
That’s wonderful news. Three Cheers!!
Susan Reynolds said
Liz that was a great line - I’ve stuck it right at the top of
http://susanreynolds.soup.io/
Trisha said
“Success comes to those that keep going.” I hope you are right Todd!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Trisha, congrats!
Todd Jordan said
Stub should be snub , just realized I spelling the wrong word.
There are folks with their noses stuck up in the air a lot. You really notice it online more than in the real world just do to the shear volume of folks you encounter.
Lately even ‘old friends’ are snubbing a bit.
Trisha said
Thanks Todd!
Trisha said
Thanks Karen!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Yeah, Trisha!
Trisha said
Todd - are you in the city? I’m in Fenton.
Teeg said
Yay Karen! Congratulations!
Suzie Cheel said
Congrats Karen,
see you guys next week
Keep dreaming Big
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Well Todd, you’ll get no snubbing from me!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Bye Suzie– you keep dreaming too!
Trisha said
Thanks Glenda!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Hey Becky, where are you going for three weeks?
Todd Jordan said
Out in St. Peters. Now that’s another nightmare. We are like 60th best city in the top 100 in the US.
Becky McCray said
Karen, we’re off to Africa again.
Todd Jordan said
Tell us where Becky please.
Trisha said
Bye Suzie!
Todd Jordan said
ohhh Becky, don’t forget your friends now.
Todd Jordan said
Do they have social networks in Africa?
On another note, I’ve heard that some of the more primitive cultures in Africa still promote and encourage rich dream lives.
Teeg said
Todd, I think having to take a break online shows who your real friends are as much as anything that could happen offline. What did I hear someone say recently, something like “Friends are those who are there when the rest of the world walks away.” (very much paraphrased)

Teeg,
Good share.
Thanks.

I had to fix something on my computer and then I had to let Teeg out of moderation where I had her trapped. (SORRy)
Teeg! You’re welcome here!!
Trisha said
I’ve never been to St. Peters - about where is that?
Teeg said
Thanks Liz…was starting to wonder if I’d said something wrong.
LOL Actually, it made me realize I have a bad habit of reviewing your blog on SU or other social sites and not leaving comments. Sorry
Todd Jordan said
Trisha - It’s not far passed the Missouri river on 70 as you head West from St. Louis.
Trisha said
Yeah, where in Africa?
Todd Jordan said
will you headed down the big river Becky?
ME Liz Strauss said
Now, about the “snubbing.”
One thing that’s hard to learn about online is the space nd speed at which things work. We have “permanent” kinds of friends here — unlike offline where we’re used to people leaving a job and disappearing from our lives. Here, their comments and profiles and friend links stay stuck even when the natural relationship is over or it’s time they have to move on.
I don’t think many folks have seen more of that than I have. I have a whole directory of people who used to comment on my blog, who are memories with badges that say SOB. It’s in my sidebar.
Blogging moves in generations of about six months. Friendships that last more than 6 months are almost blog-life-long friends.
Timothy Johnson said
Hi all! How is everyone tonight?
Trisha said
ok, I see it on a map - you’re further west than me

Safari! We’re going back for our 4th safari in Africa. It’s always on communal land, owned by and benefiting the local people who choose to live there and support the wildlife. It’s an amazing social project.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Teeg, glad you were let out of jail!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Teeg!
I’m delighted to see you here!
Just in time to say Hi to Tim!!
ME Liz Strauss said
Tim,
The book passes with flying colors. But I still think you wrote it to fulfill your dream of cops and robbers.
Timothy Johnson said
Funny you should mention safaris on a night where the theme is weird dreams. Imagine a dream about a safari with blue zebras and a purple gorilla.
Susan Reynolds said
I don’t want to say anything I’ll regret, so I’m biting my tongue
(er, fingers) but there are some who will forget you overnight. And some will forget you if you’re not at the big events.
But many of us remember who’s been there for us, and what they (you) mean to us.
Todd Jordan said
touche liz touche.
I find it hard to keep up, and equally hard to trust myself to pair it down in terms of relationships.
I try to preserve the ones with folks that have had the most impact on my life, even if that impact is to make me smile.

Talk about getting snubbed - WordPress wouldn’t accept my last comment! Whatever.
Trisha said
I need to take a break for a while
Becky McCray said
Liz, that is some interesting insight. I’m beginning to reflect on and appreciate some real, long-term friends made online.
Teeg said
That’s interesting, @Liz. I got sick around month 4 on my site, had built up a large following and lost almost all of them over the next few months as I recovered. I’m only now rebuilding it, so it will be interesting to watch the time flows now.
I know on SU, if someone’s been gone about 2.5 months, you know they’re moving on, even if they come back…2 months, they might get back into it, but longer than that, they’re done whether they’ll admit it or not.
ME Liz Strauss said
Yeah, Susan,
Thursday don’t by without a thought of you.
And SOBCon has introduced me to lots of both kinds — the ones who know you and the one’s who only wanted to know your influence. Who come in all sizes with all amounts of fame.
ME Liz Strauss said
That was a tangent at this point, but wasn’t when we started.
Susan Reynolds said
Just talking to daughter 3.0 who’s doing a bedroom makeover and finding lost treasure (and trash) - then fed the cats - now am catching up on snubbing and safaris.
ME Liz Strauss said
I had a jungle Dream like yours, Tim. Only it was lions changing colors.
Teeg said
Becky, going on a safari is one of my long term plans. Not until the boys get bigger, but I think it would be so much fun to do. I’d love to see pictures when you get back!
Timothy Johnson said
Thanks for the kudos, Liz. Guilty as charged on the book. How many cubicle-dwellers get to embed themselves with a SWAT team to research a book?
Todd Jordan said
regarding SU. I forget since I don’t have SU set up in Safari.
I take SU requests though. Hint hint.
Susan, thanks for reminding me to come here tonight. It’s like being in a room with friends. Cozy and warm.
ME Liz Strauss said
Todd,
It took me the longest time, not to take it hard when people I invested in went away. I miss lots of them still.
Teeg said
LOL What’s your SU name, Todd? Tojosan?
Todd Jordan said
Safaris sound very exciting. I hope for you to have the best of ones Becky.
Joe said
Todd and Becky and just about everyone else said something about forgetting and the short memeory of the internet?
I took my leave at comment 114 and everyone forgot about me by comment 118.

Being forgotten before you even really leave…
Sad…

Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hey Mr T!
Timothy Johnson said
Joe - you could never be truly forgotten, friend. Everytime I think of a Berma Shave rhyme, you are the first person who comes to mind.
Teeg said
LOL me too, Todd. I’ll digg if someone asks me *off digg* but I don’t go there even to see what’s been posted.
Trisha said
Liz - just because they went away doesn’t mean they aren’t thinking about you, they probably just got busy and overwhelmed with other things.
Todd Jordan said
Joe Joe ummm who are you again? LOL
Timothy Johnson said
Hi Glenda… some great “dance music” on this end… watching Veggie Tales Silly Songs with my kids.
Todd Jordan said
you can so dance to the Veggie Tales songs…
Teeg said
I love Veggie Tales Songs. Know the intro by heart!
ME Liz Strauss said
Trisha,
I know. But there’s hole where they once were. Everyone is unique.
Susan Reynolds said
I find too Todd that some of us are much more hands-on and comfortable with people online vs people in person. Where you’re so easy going and willing to meet people in person it’s a great thing. I hope you won’t interpret people not being eager to do meetups as not being glad to know you - just on a different level of familiarity.
Todd Jordan said
How could I forget Liz? She’s been someone I’ve talked about more this year than just about anyone else.
Trisha said
ok, this time I really mean it - I have to go for a while but will try to be back later.
ME Liz Strauss said
Todd,
Joe’s the one who’s been here since the first open comment night and taking things personally ever since — much less now than back in the old days.
bllllppppp!!! That’s raspberries, Joe!!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Liz, thanks for pointing that out. There have been a few people, one in particular from Tuesday nights, who have disappeared and I miss. I blame myself for not being more diligent with the friendship.
Becky McCray said
Now, Now, Joe. Just bouncing around here on a dozen side topics, as usual!
Though I have noticed more people than would be polite to admit, who say on Twitter, “did you miss me??” and I have to think, “um, were you gone??” I never say so, though.
*Interaction streams like Twitter and open comments tend to be tough to keep track of comings and goings. It doesn’t mean we don’t care. Our deep relationships include multiple ways of interacting.

Aw Joe - I thought you were really gone by then. I hate talking to your back
but am glad to see ya. Burma shave on, brother!
ME Liz Strauss said
Nah, Glenda,
It’s the way it works. Once in a blue, blue moon someone comes back. A friend from my other blog returned after two years. Unfortunately, I hardly write there anymore.
Susan Reynolds said
This DOES seem like old times! The ARE five strands of this conversation - some lost in midair - but who’s counting. It’s lovely to be able to chat with you all for a bit. It’s a treat I rarely get now.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Mr T, only if we dance if freezer section!
Teeg said
Becky, to be honest, I think it’s easier noticing people are gone on Plurk than on Twitter. On twitter they need to be gone more than just a weekend, on Plurk, even with a full timeline, there’s a space missing when someone is gone or just isn’t plurking as much (figurative space, but it’s noticable).
Joe said
Liz, did I ever tell you I LOVE raspberries?
ME Liz Strauss said
Trisha,
No worries! We love having you either way! Good night for however long you’re gone!
Susan Reynolds said
But we still have no donkeys around . . unless Joe has him writing code for him
Timothy Johnson said
I can only do the Charleston in the freezer.
Todd Jordan said
Regarding in person ….
I’m weird about that I guess. I’ll admit that it does bug me that more peeps don’t want to meet in person after getting to know you online. Likewise with phone calls. Lots of folks seem to avoid phone conversations with folks they aren’t already close with. That’s not a negative comment so much as an observation.
I get very very very few calls, so I enjoy the ones I get the chance to have with my online buds.
Becky McCray said
Susan, it is *so* wonderful to happen to be here at the right moment to chat with you, too.
Susan Reynolds said
Yup, drinking, dancing in the freezer section. Same old stuff
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
works for me, Mr T.
Becky McCray said
And why am I full of lectures tonight? Maybe because I’m supposed to be writing, and I’m definitely doing everything except that.
Susan Reynolds said
All I can say is there are phone people and non phone people. I’m one of the nons. But it’s like being tone deaf - I seem to be phone deaf and just can’t communicate that way.
Becky McCray said
Teeg, you have some interesting insights, too.
Todd Jordan said
as much as I’m enjoying this, I’m not doing other things like …..um…. well, blogging, yeah blogging. You know i’ve got a 100 posts in me to write. That’s it.
ME Liz Strauss said
Teeg,
I think it’s the visuals and the sorting on Plurk — they make it easier to see.
Susan Reynolds said
Becky that is very nice to hear. It’s been hard to not have the energy to do my normal thing.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
OTOH Liz, the more and more people we meet online, the harder it is to maintain quality relationships with everyone. I know I can’t keep up, not that I don’t want to.
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
I don’t know whether you’ve told me that. But sure glad that you do!
Becky McCray said
You know, my husband doesn’t like to talk on the phone either. Combine a general shyness with a certain amount of difficulty hearing, and he is *so not* a phone person.
Teeg said
Todd, to me its easier to meet in person than to talk on the phone. Talking on the phone is a lot like writing in a forum (or commenting on a blog post), I don’t get enough feedback to feel comfortable.
Timothy Johnson said
Hey Joe, I just found some fresh raspberries in my back yard this week.
ME Liz Strauss said
That’s it, Glenda,
We’re learning the natural cycle of things. We can’t be friends with everyone we might find interesting.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Way off topic, but an update–yesterday was my meeting with the shake company. Three hours of me asking them to make their drive-thru accessible. Three hours later, they offered me money to never blog the incident again and no real changes to their drive-thru. They also said that no violation of the law occurred. I said no, see you in court.
Joe said
But Liz, I never see you on Plurk, I know I looked for you… You are my friend everywhere else, but I couldn’t find you there?
Another NightMare!
Susan Reynolds said
Now I’m wondering if Tim can only do the Charleston in the freezer because it keeps him hopping to be cold - or if that’s the only dance he does in the freezer or - well so many questions not enough time for answers !
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Susan, I’m really phone deaf. LOL
Becky McCray said
Todd, I have Scrabulous open right now… :>
Todd Jordan said
I’m not the world’s best phone person either I guess. I too enjoy the feedback to help me have conversation.
The thing in common about meeting in person and phone call is it’s more direct and personal.
Nice thing about meeting in person is being able to sit across from each other, share a drink, and sometimes enjoy the silence.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
you know, I have yet to meet Basil!
Susan Reynolds said
Karen, it’s not off topic because it happened to someone we care about. And that’s interesting that they took that tactic. Amazing, astounding but awful too. How are you handling this rash of publicity. That has to be extra pressure too.
Becky McCray said
Karen, I cannot believe how stupid their approach has been! Why not just…. be accessible!! Astounding!
Joe said
Tim, send over those raspberries, I’m all out of strawberries.
Teeg said
I can’t believe they reacted like that Karen. Well, okay I can believe it but don’t want to. Uggh!
Susan Reynolds said
Karen I really feel as if I am too - I hear the words - but can’t seem to formulate intelligent responses - as if I only heard snippets. It’s got to be some kind of weird mental thing. And it’s nothing new so I guess I was born that way.
Becky McCray said
Todd, you and I actually met in person first, then started following each other. That’s backwards, isn’t it?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Karen, curious, how much to keep you silent? This is so ridiculous!
Todd Jordan said
Good for you Karen. Folks need to get a clue these days. No excuse not to make an effort.
Timothy Johnson said
Hi Karen… you have no idea how much the family pressured me to eat at S&S on vacation. We had a lot of discussions about principles and will-power that week.
Thanks for holding your ground. You’re a true hero
Teeg said
I wonder if phone people are more aural and visual people run from the phone. I know even as a child I didn’t like using it to talk to someone I didn’t already know very well. But I’m also a visual learner though so wondering now if the two are connected…
Susan Reynolds said
Todd, I can take people in small doses. That’s why the net is perfect for me. I can dip in and out. But if you are ever here we’ll have lunch or dinner - that’s my way to get to know people with ease. it’s the irish girl in me, used to a big family table at grandma Ryan’s where we’d sit and talk for hours.
ME Liz Strauss said
I believe it. The big company lawyers figure they can just wear her out — make her exhausted enough to change her priorities, break down her self-esteem.
Imagine someone thinking they could buy your principles. That’s what it’s about.
Susan Reynolds said
teeg - wow - I wonder too. That’s a great insight. Wonder if we could be part of a great study that would help other people in the future understand what it is about non-phone people?
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
I was really shocked that they wouldn’t consider the access solutions. Their lawyer did not even take the time to look into it and he admitted it. I do not think that they are savvy about social media and the negative publicity that may result from their decision. I tried to pursuade them to see the positive PR, including me blogging about their positive changes, but they weren’t swayed.
Glenda, the dollar amount was small. Their first offer was a refund of the milkshakes!!!
Susan Reynolds said
I’d have a hard time stopping at a Steak and Shake now if I were near one. I wonder if they have any idea what the cost of goodwil is.
Joe said
Glenda,
Meet Basil the Code Writing Donkey
http://workingathomeinternet.com/WP/2006/07/22/the-true-story-of-basil-the-code-writing-donkey/
Todd Jordan said
yep Becky. But there shouldn’t be anything wrong with that either.
I’m a visual person, so in person or text are actually both better than phone calls communication wise, at least for me.
Susan, sharing a drink/meal is really the best way to cement a relationship. Big in my family growing up.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
funny, I wish the phone was more of an option for me.
Teeg said
I’d never even put the two together until this chat…but it would make sense, wouldn’t it. Visual people *need* the visual clues to make them comfortable and aural people can pick them up from tones.
Now I’m wondering if it’s not also related to introvert/extrovert. It would be interesting to find out if most introverts are visual.
Becky McCray said
Karen, we are so *insulted* for you!
ME Liz Strauss said
Karen,
You should sit down and calculate the time you’ve invested since that moment in trying to solve this with them. Then you should multiply it by an hourly rate that a good lawyer charges, say $250/hour.
And let them know that’s the value of the time that you’ve already spent in conversation with them.
Susan Reynolds said
I need to write something about Karen’s story and what a contrast it is to a local place where we’ve had a few problems w/ take-out orders - nothing about accessibility, and they comped a whole meal for three when what was wrong were a few minor mistakes. There has to be some difference in the brains of people who get it and those who don’t.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
you’re kidding me, Karen! Hope you blogged that!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Liz, their lawyer said stuff to my lawyer that was positively degrading. Their lawyer is a person with a disability who uses a chair and he basically said, well, life isn’t accessible for everyone.
Timothy– you have no idea what your support means to me– giving up SnS on vacation– wow.
Timothy Johnson said
Karen, as soon as you’ve blogged about this latest incident, let us know. We’ll give Snake n Shake a blogospheric run for their money.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
I’m waiting for the go ahead from my lawyer and I’m going to take this company to town on my blog in a few days.
Todd Jordan said
Glenda - it was my pleasure to meet you in person this year. My wife really enjoyed your company as well.
Susan Reynolds said
Apparently for me tonight everything is related to how we’re hard-wired - which brings us right back to dreams and the different forms they take for all of us. Wow.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Liz, that would be a good way to calculate all the time I’ve spent on this issue.
Big problem with the law is that the ADA doesn’t really issue punitive damages for this kind of thing. Neither does the Human Rights Act in my state.
Todd Jordan said
If you all didn’t know, Glenda’s doing a whole series on accessability on her blog.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Ok, enough on the negative stuff and back to dreams– I think I’m going to revisit Patrick Swayze tonight and go dance with him.
Becky McCray said
Susan, you’re just thinking that way tonight. Later, you’ll dream about all of us sending you text messages.
ME Liz Strauss said
I know, Susan.
I think you’re finding the pattern in those tiles.
Timothy Johnson said
Karen - it’s about time that a judge considers that factor. You’re acting on behalf of hearing-impaired people everywhere to make their fast-food experiences enjoyable (and equitably fair). That investment of your time and energy should be worth some kind of compensatory response.
Susan Reynolds said
Karen I’ve got a daughter who’s both a genius and has multiple learning disabilities and I’ve learned that sure, life’s not always accessible in the same way for all of us, but making an effort to make adaptations in 2008 is certainly the least they could do. It’s simply asking someone else to be more human than mechanical!
Joe said
I’m going to really have to put my thinking cap on to come up with a ditty for tonight’s conversation!
Susan Reynolds said
LOL - I love text messages on the phone. Explain that. And I will dream about it probably - oh and maybe the tiles were really about scrabble. Or words - or - multiple pieces of one’s life
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Joe, where is Basil now? Has he been put out to pasture?
ME Liz Strauss said
It’s the old marketing way . . . we’re supposed to be ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL. That’s what’s going to ruin some companies.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Susan, have you written about your daughter on your blog?
Susan Reynolds said
We should come up with a ditty for Joe some week, people. let’s work on that. not that we could ever outdo him!
Todd Jordan said
Just realized I have one connected house. My son is online on xbox, wife is online on Flickr and more, and I’m online here, Friendfeed and twitter.

Glenda, Basil went on a walking trip around the world.
I think I am the last one to see him before he left for Belarus.
He hasn’t been seen since. :’(

Karen that was a lifetime ago. I learned more about LD/IQ etc than I want to know. But she’s 37 years old now. I can say it was quite an adventure figuring out what her issue was and then dealing with schools etc. I am lucky to live where I do.

Trisha, great “seeing” you. Hope the headache is better soon.

Wow — just found out about this & love the idea of it! Several years ago I had a dream in which I was shot and died — even though I’ve heard “experts” say you can dream your own death. But I did. The cool thing is that it was painless & freeing, & the only thing I didn’t like after I died was that my family & friends couldn’t hear me talk to them. It really made me less afraid of dying!

A good night for community we would all agree
From our Nightmares and Dreams that we shared
We braved our deep fears, those who did dare
As always we do, we went to and fro
Where even the strongest would dare not go
But we knew that all would be right
Cause our friends protect us from such a fright
So as we all go off to our own dreamland
Remember that these friends will together stand
Against any and all thoughts that are wrong
Because friends together, forever are Strong.

Great to know you woke up laughing!

Yeah, thing about some dreams is that often the facades you have to wear in life get left on the nightstand, especially the dreams where you forget to bring your fears and are lucky enough to be aware that you are dreaming.
Do you know what it is like to leap and fly? I do in my dreams. Occasionally I know I am dreaming. When I know I am dreaming, leaping is the first thing I do.
I doubt I will find anything like it in wakefullness.
Another good thing to do when you KNOW you are dreaming is to ask yourself the questions you have been avoiding. You get interesting answers and interesting respondents.
-Tim
