The Mic Is On: It’s That Time of Year . . .
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
We’re Talking About Time. . .
We might talk about
- daylight savings time
- time zones
- clocks and watches
- finding, making, stealing, borrowing, and wasting
- times of our Life
- time travel

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey.
Oh, and bring a link to share, if you have one to share.

Where’s Joe? Isn’t he supposed to be first?
Char said
Joe - we must have posted at the same time.
ME Strauss said
Hi Joe!
Hi Char!
Joe said
There has to be another horse in the race!
How can I always (almost) be the first one here?
Author Mom DogNut said
First, living in the NE, I have to say that I love that Daylight Savings has been extended. The light at the end of the day is very welcome.
Second, talking about time reminds me of the saying: The only person certain they have the right time is someone who only has one clock. It’s always a great reminder that there is usually more than “one right answerâ€, and that it pays to keep an open mind.
Joe said
Char, Check your counter #1 again.
Lisa said
Hey all,
I just wanted to stop in and say HI. Have to go to writing group tonight and get tortured.
How are you all?
Joe said
You know what they say about a clock that has stopped…
It’s right twice a day.
Service Untitled - Douglas said
How is everyone today?
Minic said
It’s TIME again for me to drop by this Open Mic and say hello to everyone. Will be having dinner with family first but will be back later.
ME Strauss said
Hi Lisa,
You don’t need a writing group to get tortured. We’ll do that here — for free!
Lisa said
The theme of time…always leads me to the idea of space.
I find that when we say we are out of time, not enough time, too busy — we need to look for space, open up space.
Tariq Khan said

Hi Minic!
I’m delighted to see you had TIME to stop in. How’s your grand opening? I’m going to post about it tomorrow.
Char said
I am loving Daylight Savings Time! My kids sleep in a bit longer and can play outside longer in the evening too.
Every clock in this house seems to have a different time on it.
Joe - I thought I just might have got in before you tonight.
Lisa said
Thanks, Liz
so dependable!
ME Strauss said
Evenin’Tariq,
I have so much to tell you! TIME just keeps getting away from me as usual.
ME Strauss said
Lisa,
Thanks for the message to Doc about the conference. That was above and beyond the call . . .
Lisa said
Liz, don’t you feel like you’ve been doing open mic for days???
Char said
Chris - did you save me a Klondike bar from yesterday or did you bring a new stash tonight?
Hi Lisa, Minic, Tariq, Douglas and of course, Liz!
Tariq Khan said
Liz,
I look forward to hearing everything… but all in good TIME!
Lisa said
Hi Char, Minic, Tariq and Douglas and Klondikes.
Joe said
Char, it IS difficult to beat me being on TIME.
When I was in High School, I was late for (early moring) band practice and the priest punched me in the mouth and I went head over heals backwards down the steps to the band room.
I have Never Been Late Since.
Tariq Khan said
Hi, Char. Hope you had a great day.
Lisa said
I hope the priest has passed away…
Chris Cree said
I’ve eased into Savannah time. I seem to be late for everything these days.
Lisa said
Joe, that’s putting it kindly…
ME Strauss said
Yeah, Lisa, I do sort of feel like I’ve landed in the Twilight Zone of Open Comments. The next virual conference will be on a Tuesday for sure!
Tariq Khan said
Chris,
One of the keys to time is measured in Klondike bars per minute. What’s your record?
Char said
Liz - Tuesdays are much better for me - that is good news.
Joe - It amazes me what “people of the faith” actually do - that is terrible!!
Tariq Khan said
Hi, Lisa.
Joe said
Tariq,
I can eat 1 1/2 Klondike bars per every 5 comments.
I don’t know what the record is, but I think I can hold my own with Chris.
Chris Cree said
Let’s see Tariq…
Looking through my data logs I see that I generally run about 4:36 per Klondike Bar.
Really they’re one of the joys in life that I savor. Mmmm….
Joe said
Char, it was a LONG TIME ago, but I did end up learning the value of being on TIME,
ME Strauss said
Chris 4:36 in real time is how long in comment time?
Chris Cree said
Joe, I hung out for a while on the receiving end of some Marine Corps DI yelling. I was punctual for a season…
Now, not so much.
Lisa said
So sorry I can’t stay. I have a date with my pen and paper.
Bye all.
Service Untitled - Douglas said
I’m not a big DST fan. I don’t mind the change, but would have preferred they let it happen when it usually does.
Tariq Khan said
Chris,
Ya dun bin challenged! Whatcha gonna do? You gonna do sumthin, or you gonna let him git away with it this TIME? I say it’s time to show him what ya kin do. It’s you and Joe!
Chris Cree said
Liz, I’ll leave the comment counting to Joe. Maybe I’ll delegate the data tabulation to Tariq?
That way there’s nothing left for me to do but enjoy my Klondike tastiness!
Joe said
5 or so comments by my estimation,
But, I’m only the Comment Counting Counter on Tuesdays eastern daylight TIME.
Char said
What time zone is everyone in right now? I am on the east coast so - eastern daylight savings time - it is 8:21 pm.
Chris Cree said
Tariq, I’m secure in my slowness.
Helps keep my blood pressure under control. (In more ways than one!)
ME Strauss said
Bye Lisa!
Hi Doug! Welcome to the first 2007 dst open comment night.
Joe said
I had 4 Klondike bars since the TIME of the challenge… How many did Chris have in that TIME???
Tariq Khan said
Chris,
Did I read somewhere that you flew jets for the Navy?
Tariq Khan said
Bye, Lisa.
Joe said
Tariq, (I think he was a passenger, he never really tells)
Service Untitled - Douglas said
Hi Liz. It’s indeed exciting to be in the DST club.
Joe said
That was supposed to be a whisper…
Chris Cree said
Might have, Tariq. But that is a bit of an exaggeration. Actually I was a Naval flight Officer.
The short version is that I told the pilot where to go.
ME Strauss said
Hi Doug!
How’s everything with your proposal etc.?
Robert Hruzek said
Howdy, y’all, from the amazingly balmy Midwest! Liz, I’m truly sorry I couldn’t make it for yesterday’s fun - the hotel internet wasn’t up to the task. Finally working - some - tonight.
Hello Joe, Lisa, Author…, Char, Service…, Chris, Tariq, (did I miss anyone?).
Please, Chris, say it ain’t so! Somebody lay out some Klondike bars to distract him!
Tariq Khan said
Char,
It’s 7:27 PM (CST) here in Houston.
ME Strauss said
Robert,
I heard you’re responsible for this guy we have hanging around here now. He’s here almost all of the TIME.
Tariq Khan said
Hi, Robert. Hope your trip is going well.
Joe said
Tariq,
Is that Planet Houston?
Chris Cree said
I heard that, Joe. (In case you were wondering…)
ME Strauss said
Robert? Does this finally mean that you are in Toronto?
Robert Hruzek said
Well… I may have introduced him, but I’m not taking responsibility for him! :O
Except… that we’ve known each other for many years now, and I finally (after a long TIME) managed to convince him to start blogging.
ME Strauss said
Chris would have had more Klondike bars since the challenge, but if you recall he has a habit of misplacing them.
Tariq Khan said
Chris,
Somebody has to help them. Without you they’d be lost all the time.
Robert Hruzek said
Liz, no, actually I’m within throwing distance of Chicago - I’m in Joliet (the town, not the prison).
ME Strauss said
Robert,
After a long TIME, does that mean Tariq is slow to catch on?
Tariq Khan said
Joe,
This time ask Robert about Planet Houston.
Tariq Khan said
Liz,
It’s time you know I’m just stubborn.

But if you happen to have an IBC Root Beer…

Hi, Becky. Help yourself to a pint.

Doug,
If you go dark, maybe a steel blue (not green money you know) some shade of burdundy might work. You could try black. I’m talking only about the big rectangle.
If you go light pale blue like this comment box.
Chris Cree said
I’ve got to check out for the night. Joe, can you make sure the Klondike Bars get passed out?
ME Strauss said
Chris,
You’re putting Joe in charge of the Klondike bars? Is that wise?
Service Untitled - Douglas said
Hmm, thanks for the ideas, Liz. Any thoughts about the idea and such?
Tariq Khan said
Bye, Chris. Thanks for the Bars, and see you next time!
ME Strauss said
Good night Chris, get some sleep we need you alive for SOBCon. I don’t want a ship to fall on you.
Chris Cree said
JOE?!
Hmm… He seems to have slipped out. Liz, would you take care of them until he gets back?
(He’ll do fine just get him counting the comments it takes folks to eat them.

Gotcha Chris,
Yeah he had to leave to help his friend, said he’d be back in what? 36 comments or something like that.
Chris Cree said
‘Night Tariq!

This ship lists off center, you know that.
Robert Hruzek said
Did you know the town of Vincennes, Indiana does NOT observe daylight savings time? In fact, they are the only location in Indiana that is in Central time, not Eastern time!
For about a year I was living across the state line in Robinson, Illinois, and whenever we wanted to go to Vincennes and see a movie, we could never seem to get the times right! When the rest of the country changed to DST, it made it even harder to figure out.
What’s with that, anyway?
ME Strauss said
Robert,
They are not the only location in Indiana — Indiana has 18 counties who don’t change, they’re just speckled all over the state.
It’s wreally weird, because of that the TV stations can’t change either so half the year the news is on at 10pm and half the year it’s on at 11pm.
I think that does something to the human psyche.
Becky McCray said
I like Time and Date.com to check the time in different cities.

OK, that was weird! Do you have a time delay spam filter now???
Becky McCray said

No, why do you ask about a time delay? I just turned it off completely.

Bye, Tariq. Thanks for the ice cream!
Robert Hruzek said
Sorry, Becky, all this talk of time zones has me wondering where I am.
It just seems to me that a town or location shouldn’t be able to arbitrarily choose NOT to go with whatever the overall zone is… I mean, life is complicated enough, isn’t it?
ME Strauss said
Hey Joe,
Chris wants you to watch over the Klondike Bars. I want you to talk about time warps and time travelers.
Becky McCray said
Hi, Carolyn
Carolyn Manning said
Robert? What was it like to live in two time zones?
Carolyn Manning said
Hi Becky! How are things at smallbiz?
Joe said
Liz,
I think I just went through a time warp.
I told my friend NOT to let anyone else change or put anything new on his computer…
He let someone change thing, NOW he lost ALL of his Favorites, Programs (antivir etc) and he wants me to fix it (FOR FREE!!!)
Thant’s what I was talking about last night. ~~shiver~~
Joe said
Where’s the Klondike Bars when you need one???
I’ll go looking for them in the sidebar and let everyone have 2 for being nice and waiting.
Carolyn Manning said
You really should charge something, Joe. Even if it’s minimal or barter. People used to barter for everything.
Polli said
I think I’m late to the party! A little ironic here as the topic is time … but I forgot the time difference between Seattle time and Chicago time. It is 6:19pm here now. I’m the official clock-fixer in my family. Twice a year I faithfully change all the clocks and watches. it drives me crazy. I wish all the devices would change themselves.
Char said
Hey Carolyn and Polli.

Here are all of the Klondike bars. They were in the freezer

I Found Them…
Klondikes for Everyone… Plain, STRAWBERRY (my favorite), Chocolate (I know Liz like Chocolate) and just about any other flavor your could imagine.
Just in TIME I’d say.
Compliments of Chris Cree
Robert Hruzek said
Hi Carolyn! Life was confusing at best, particularly when we wanted to go anywhere… and the only “where” to go was across the time change line.
Polli, devices all change themselves now - but look at the mess now that the gov’t has changed the dates! I’ll go back to manual, if I could.
Becky McCray said
Fine, thanks, Carolyn. And, hi, Polli!
Here’s my other link I want to share. Maxx Blade’s Java Script Clocks:

Hi Everyone,
Talking about time - whoever wrote that song, “Time is on my side” got it wrong, I think. Time is fleeting…
Carolyn Manning said
Does anyone remember the quiet girl who was here about two weeks ago? I wonder if she could use a little encouragement to come back.

Joe, I think that was Jim Croce who sang ‘Time in a Bottle’.
Carolyn Manning said

Liz,
You asked for a TIME warp, just go through comments and you will see DST, EST, Non-DST etc getting so confused that some people answer questions before they are even Asked…
Carolyn Manning said
Yes it is, Char. I can still remember my grandmother singing this to me while I fell asleep. lol:)
ME Strauss said
Joe that sounds like a normal night on Successful Blog!
Polli said
Liz, yes he did tell me! He was soooo excited about speaking with you and said the time flew by, he could have talked to you for another hour or two.
Oh you make me blush. We designed the blog together but yes, i did all the work and I am *still* working on it because the CSS validates but the XHTML still has some errors and since I am teaching myself this as I go along, it’s taking a bit of time. Thank you for the compliments, coming from you that means a lot to me!
Becky and Char - http://www.bobbarama.com
The idea was to have a very clean, simple design that allowed the content to be the focus and have the text be readable. We change things as I learn more about this medium. I’m fascinated with blogs and blogging and what all you do (that is how I discovered this wonderful blog by Liz).

Joe will you get Lynn a Klondike bar, Please?
Carolyn Manning said
Hey, Joe, you have a good point. I was talking to Bes Zain (The Reasoner)http://thereasoner.com earlier. She’s from California and, since we’re only a week or so into the change, I had a really time following why our times were so off.

I think there is this little group of people Char, who sit around pondering what the “In” color will be for the next year. Yep, I am certain of it!
Joe said
Hey Lynn, CATCH…
I hope you like Chocolate Klondikes…
Polli said
Char, thanks so much. We did colors in the sidebar because we went with a white background and a very simple design. The graphic is one of 3 but this is his favorite. It is supposed to look like we “painted” it on and in the wet blue pant is is name and smiley guy icon … the upside down reflects the idea that he turns ordinary topics on their head so to speak and looks at things in a funny or different way.
Lynn Robins said
Thanks for the Klondike bar…I am a good catch! love chocolate..but who doesn’t?

Char said
Joe - maybe you could write us a Haiku instead
Joe said
Char, maybe if I Knew what a Haiku was, I might attempt it.
ME Strauss said
Joe,
She didn’t write YOUR poem. She wrote her own poem. You’ll do fine and you have your special ending.
Francie said
Oh, come on Joe.
200 or more comments certainly allow for more than one poem.
I don’t really think of mine as a poem, it’s just a little ditty. Having a little fun, ’cause sometimes I’m told I spend too much time being serious.
Joe said
Francie,
at the end.
I think I must have forgotten to
It was a great “little ditty” poem.

BUT … that said … anyone who doesn’t spell my name right must visit my site. It’s all right there in Blog Rules, Guidelines & Etiquette.
Chapter 3, section 2, Paragraph 4: ” … and, furthermore, anyone who by design or accident misspells the name of a blog must, not shall, must visit the site.”
Hey … I don’t write the rules. I just pass ‘em on.

I just wrote an entry about time… that when you find your passion(s)… time seems to expand to include it all. A good aha for for this Type A’er who seems to struggle with not having enough time.
Nuff said. Time for a Klondike bar

Hey Brooke, belated Happy birthday! Hope you had a blast! I love celebrating birthdays, you see. ;))
Joe, can you send me that Klondike bike? I love biking and feeling the caress of the wind on my face. It’s so refreshing.

Ran out of chocolate, Hope ya like STRAWBERRY!
Becky McCray said
Hi, GP, you really packed a lot into that comment!
ME Strauss said
Hey Joe,
There’s three more cases in the freezer, you might check and see what they are.
Joe said
Meikah, I don’t know if Klondike makes a bike, but if you want a Hot Fudge Sundae (whipped cream and cherry on top), you’ll Feel like your are riding On the Wind.

Liz, I have a link to share. The post was sparked by a phrase you used, “spend time and save time simultaneously.” It make me think about a bigger picture since it was near my birthday…

Hey Liz,
When I get there in May, I want to go see the SMC Carthage Co Building.
I’m not really a morbid personality, but it IS History.
Pretty Please with a Cherry on Top…
ME Strauss said
Joe,
I have no clue where that building might be.
Joe said
I’ll find it on a map, If you take me there.
Or at least find it on a tour bus.
(You do know the significance of that building, don’t you?)
Carolyn Manning said
Joe, am I being totally off the wall, or is that a Carnegie bldg?
(I might be off the wall)
ME Strauss said
I believe I knew that building once. I don’t know it anymore.

Goodnight all! It was another fun night at Liz’s place! See you next Tuesday and probably somewhere in between.
ME Strauss said
Good night, Char and thank you for your help last night. You got me thinking in the right direction.
Joe said
I’ll find my way if the building still exists.
It may have been torn down since St Valentine’s Day.
Meikah Delid said
Hahaha Joe all the while I thought you’re talking about a bike. I was thinking of the Kona bike. My bad!!! hahaha that’s what you get for multi-tasking!

That’s a very long way from where the conference is. At least an hour’s drive.
Joe said
Ok, Meikah, Now it’s TIME for an Ice Cream Break.
I like Milk on the side. I don’t know why they always give you a glass of water, Milk works So Much Better.
Brooke said
Milk is best Joe.
Hey Meikah and Joe, can I bring ice cream cake?
Joe said
Liz,
I once drove 50 miles out of my way to Dip My Toes in Lake Erie, just because I had never been there and I was (imagine really small gap between fingers) that close.
I just had to do it.
ME Strauss said
I understand Joe. I’ve done worse than that.
Joe said
Brooke, YES!!!
Brooke said
okie dokie! This sounds like a GREAT ice cream party!
Lake Erie huh? Was it worth it?
Joe said
I’m sorry I think I have Writers Block
and I haven’t even left the dock
In May I’ll be out round Chi-Town way
While I’m there, see the sights, what the Hay
Go out of my way to see the History
Won’t be the First time, Oh, not for me
Tipped my toes in big Lake Erie
while it was cold and dank and dreary
I have the need to see all I can
Going out of my way, until there’s a ban.

Nite Liz

Surfacing after an absence of a few weeks….
I’ve got to say that I unequivocally loathe DST. From the moving of the clocks to the spending one extra hour at a drudge job during the fall…I can’t think of a single solitary redeeming thing about it.
If it’s so darned beneficial, why don’t we just have DST all year?
Look at those folks down in Arizona. They get by fine without it. Although it’s kind of strange to have Arizona essentially join the Pacific Time Zone for half the year…or are we (CA, WA, OR) joining *them*?
I guess that one depends on your own Point of view.
BTW, Liz…great new blog layout and design. Love not having to page to the last page of comments just to see who said what last. I like the little “speech balloon” design to. Cool!

I live in Mesa, AZ now. Hi everyone - yes, I’m up too late.
It’s nice not to have to worry about when Daylight Saving(s) sets in or stops here. But I do miss that magical feeling of getting an extra hour in October.
Easton Ellsworth said
And then there was one.
Sleep tight, all.
ME Strauss said
Hi Samuel John,
It’s great to see you around shring your thoughts. I can’t defend DST — a good part of the world moves their clocks too. I wonder how they started. It would make interesting research I bet.
Thank you for your kind words about the new look. I think it’s a better fit too.
ME Strauss said
Hi Easton,
Thanks for staying up late which meant you could stop by.
I found when I lived in Austin, that being closer to the equator was a lot like having DST all year around. Even in the dead of winter it didn’t get dark until 6pm. It was nice driving home from work in daylight all year around.

Sorry I couldn’t make it - waylaid by a flu bug.
I missed y’all!
Best wishes for a beautiful day!

Hi Marti!
You were missed, but in the nice way. We always like to have you around.
