The Mic is On: It’s Time to Talk about Dessert!

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
Did You Save Room?
So many summer events are about food. We meet with friends, family, and coworkers at weddings, barbeques, and picnics, at conventions and conferences. We share great times over food. Tonight we’re talking about grand and simple desserts:
- do you save room for dessert?
- what’s your favorite dessert?
- what’s the most spectacular, weird, or outrageous dessert you’ve ever seen?
- what dessert rules do you have, did your family have when you were a kid?
- does the perfect dessert exist?
And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
Oh, and bring example links to share —

Nanaimo is the name of a city in British Columbia, Canada. The Nanaimo Bar gets its name from the city. Here’s what it is:
It consists of a wafer crumb-based layer, topped by a layer of light custard or vanilla butter icing, which is covered in chocolate made from melted chocolate squares.

hi Glenda
Rick Wolff said
Hiya, folks!
Desserts, eh?
The most significant dessert I had was when my wife and I were slightly ahead of the curve of the Atkins craze. By the peak, I was already 45 pounds down. There were a lot of sugar-free products. One was Edy’s “Carb-Watcher” (or something) chocolate chip. Oh, man, that was incredible! The Mrs. and I called AtkinsCrack!
ME Liz Strauss said
My mom had a rule, if you got a milk shake with dinner that was your dessert.
Brad Shorr said
We always told our girls, no dessert unless you eat your dinner, but usually caved.
ME Liz Strauss said
Suzie,
Your “sweets every night” comment made me think of Halloween candy.

I’m a Breyer’s fan when it’s from the store . . . not sure what place I’d buy it from anymore.

They say that you should bot ‘bribe’ kids with dessert. Just give them there meal (including the dessert) and that’s all they get. HMMMMMM - with my kids alll they would eat wouldd be the dessert.
ME Liz Strauss said
But the best chocolate is Belguim and over 70% cacao.
Rick Wolff said
The other night with my inlaws, at a hibachi restaurant, I had green tea ice cream. It was army-fatigue olive green, not overly sweet… and delicious! Took some getting used to. A unique experience.
Anyone have any exotic cuisine desserts?
Brooke said
Best ice cream? Cold Stone Creamery, Marble Slab, Culvers (PB shakes), Edy’s
Joe said
Brooke, not bribe, reward.
And as far as that’s all the kids would eat, what about most (at least me) adults?

The closest I come to that was the first time I went to Bologna, we ordered lemon gelato. The waiter asked if we wanted it served with a shot of vodka. We said “sure.” He poured the vodka over the gelato . . . best evah!!
We thought that was how it was supposed to be served. We were really disappointed when we had to teach ever other Italian restaurant to serve it that way.

oh, and Mom’s chocolate chip muffins. More like a muffin shaped brownie. Mmm. We didn’t [and still don't] have dessert every night. Not in the budget. And its not a treat then.
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
You just seemed like the kind of guy who’d like that. I do too.

@Brooke - I definitely prefer shakes - especially strawberry. Those icecream float things with coke in are even better but I don’t know if adults are meant to have them.

Aw Cath!
A rootbeer float is one of my favorites. I usually have one for my birthday every year!

I’m lucky to have a hot boyfriend to cook me dinner, but I love desert wine, yum yum. Oh, you meant food
Still try mascoto di asti or ice vein. Yum Yum! Very Sweet. They label wines on a sweetness scale of like 1-28 reisling is in the 15 range if that give you a hint of what I like, because deserts are in the 20’s.
Other fun fact. They are ice wines because they leave the grapes on till the first frost and pluck them in the middle of the night when they are just cold and barely frozen– and a little enzime makes them even sweeter by infecting them. Maybe I should have used a better term.

Rick Wolff said
Welcome to Twitter, y’all! Yes, articles really help explain it. The less you understand Twitter, the fewer your posts, the longer it takes for anything to happen, the more bewildering it is. The breakthrough happens when you just plunge in and risk making a nuisance of yourself. (You won’t.)
ME Liz Strauss said
Desarae,
What’s “a big list of bloggers that you all should add yourselves to” — how many would that be? It would seem not everyone should be following the same big list . . . do you think so?
Desarae A. Veit said
I recommend tweetdeck or twitterific. It’s good for keeping in touch (you can link it to hundreds of other sites to auto update also) you can update it with your phone, learn about whats new in the industry, blogs, and find new people… I’ve met a lot of my clients that way

The list is big, but not huge yet. If it gets too big I will categorize it by industry. I still think everyone can be on the list.

Aw, thanks Liz. Just trying to share so everyone can get smarter. I’m a noob at Twitter myself, but I’ve learned a bit lately. Like how to add my blogs to my feed (http://twitterfeed.com) and that you must shorten all URLs or you’re wasting space. I try not to tweet too much, just now and then. I don’t “get it” like the amazing Mr. Chris Brogan does, but I’m learning.

I HEAR great things about twitter, but just don’t understand how it works. But then, I don’t ever use my phone for texting, either. I still think about communication in terms of email, blogs, comments, forums, phone calls–not little snippets of information. Especially when I don’t know how to direct them TO anybody in particular. The whole concept just seems foreign to me! (I must be getting old.)
Desarae A. Veit said
No problem. Actually sniki is the same reason I found you!
It’s the project Mark hired me to build.
ME Liz Strauss said
No worries, Phil,
Call me on your way to work one day and I’ll give you the low down of the key points that you should look for and who to watch.
Desarae A. Veit said
deb. you can contact people directly by using d then there name at the beginning or to make it public but still directed @thentherename.
Becky McCray said
I’m munching on oatmeal cookies, so I know this must be the place! Howdy, all!
ME Liz Strauss said
Deb,
Most folks come to Twitter feeling like you do. When you see someone say something interesting, say something back. Or when you see someone you know — like me — say hello!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Hey Phil– here’s a hug right back! Was in a board meeting. Going back and forth here and there!
ME Liz Strauss said
Becky McCray!
Woman of the African continent returns . . . did you bring any exotic desserts?
--Deb said
Yes, but see people saying something WHERE? All I see on my page is ME! (grin)
ME Liz Strauss said
Yeah, Desarae,
Mark is the way we connected through sniki! That’s the beauty of the web!
Phil Gerbyshak said
Thanks Liz. Will give you a call one of these mornings.
I agree Joe. Been too long!
Thanks Karen. I LOVE hugs!
Amy Derby said
Deb — Are you the same Deb that comments on Melissa’s blog sometimes? Your site looks familiar, and it’s driving me crazy trying to figure out where I’ve seen you from. LOL
Phil Gerbyshak said
Heya Becky! How ARE ya!?!
Becky McCray said
Liz, the food on safari is soooo gooood! I brought back some chocolates on the flight. But I wish I could have brought back the vanilla custard! More like a pudding, really, but soooo smoooooooth!
ME Liz Strauss said
Click the tab at the top that says “home.”
Amy Derby said
Deb — If you click on the thing that says “home” then you will see what all the people you’re following are saying and not just yours.
Becky McCray said
Phil! Phil, my friend! I’m GREAT! No, wait, you’re GREAT! It’s just great to see you!
Rick Wolff said
Oooh, Amy Derby: I have to ask you how you like the Thesis theme!
Desarae A. Veit said
Deb here is a litter list of resources:

Rick — I love love love it!! I’m a technological moron, so I was happy to find one I could figure out and edit without the Pen Men’s help. (I’m naturally blonde, ya see.)
Desarae A. Veit said
There is a list of articles on this page:

Phil Gerbyshak said
Becky - you are GREAT too! Glad you’re doing so well. Come visit in MKE anytime! Anyone, come visit me in Milwaukee. Cheese, apples, and hugs for everyone!
Rick Wolff said
Very encouraging. I think I will take the Thesis plunge. I know some CSS, at least enough to not wreck things.

Rick — I have broken mine a few times, but it is easy to unbreak. And the VERY cool thing is, there is a forum for support, so smart people can answer the dummy questions.
Desarae A. Veit said
ok well i gotta go, hope those are helpful deb
don’t forget to find me on there! This was fun, thanks liz.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Mike!!
Welcome! What city are you in?
ME Liz Strauss said
Glad you came, Desarae!
Nice to know you!
Mike Vizdos said
Got stuck in Dayton from this FAA mess today. Hopefully I can make it home tomorrow morning.
Amy Derby said
Mike — Interesting website you have!
Amy Derby said
Did they ever report why the big mess-up at FAA?
Rick Wolff said
So, tonight’s main course was talk about dessert, for which the dessert was talk about Twitter! A favorite nightcap.
Char said
Sorry I disappeared - had to do the good night routine with the crew. Did anyone save me a Klondike bar?
--Deb said
Yes, Amy, that’s me!
And, re: Twitter, I’m sure it would be more interesting if I actually could find anybody TO follow, but that would mean I’d have to understand the process first, and, well …
Phil Gerbyshak said
Hi Char! I’ve got 2 Klondikes: one for me, one for you. *here you go*
ME Liz Strauss said
That’s how it works Rick,
We don’t ever promise to stay on topic!
Amy Derby said
Ok, here’s my stupid(est) question of the evening. (Maybe.) What is a Klondike bar?
ME Liz Strauss said
Deb,
What’s your twitter name?
Amy Derby said
Deb, you can follow me! At the top where it says “name and location” type amyderby, then hit the search button. Then follow me. You can type anyone’s name in that thing up there, and if they’re on twitter sometimes they’ll come up.
Joe said
Where’s that link to Klondikes Liz?
I know it’s around here somewhere! :-/
Kara said
Gnight everyone! Earlier bedtime than I expected but I gotta be up to drive in a few hours. This was fun and I plan to come back!
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
Google has it.
--Deb said
My twitter name is __Deb
(Yes, underscore-underscore-Deb. I couldn’t use my signature two hyphens!)
Amy Derby said
Rick — I think your blog would look great on thesis!
ME Liz Strauss said
Good night, Kara,
Get yourself psyched to see the sunrise. It’s going to be beautiful!!
ME Liz Strauss said
Everyone, find Deb here and follow her.
http://twitter.com/__Deb
Amy Derby said
Kara, good luck. That completely sucks!!
Deb — I tried to find you but a lot of Deb’s came up. Is your icon of a screaming face?
Becky McCray said
As long as we’re sharing links to Twitter articles, here’s my Business Advice from Twitter Heads:

It’s also a link to my Twitter compilations.
Amy Derby said
Deb, nevermind. I missed a bunch of posts up there. :-\ I have added you now.
ME Liz Strauss said
Becky,
Do you have 2475 favorites all of your own tweets?
[grin]
Char said
Thanks Phil!
Rick Wolff said
And Deb, there are a bunch of New Jersey Twitter folks. I discovered them, one after the other.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Just finished supper with hubby, so I’m back for dessert. Any left?
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
What did I miss? I keep bouncing back and forth. Not a good idea to multitask during a meeting that is rapid fire.
--Deb said
Thanks, Liz!
And, no, my icon is of my curly hair!
Amy Derby said
Karen — There you are. No more multitasking for you. LOL
ME Liz Strauss said
Karen and Glenda,
Deb is new to Twitter and needs some friends to help . . . her profile addy is up at #267, will you follow her?
Amy Derby said
Deb — I followed the wrong Deb at first, but now I found you. Yay!
Phil Gerbyshak said
Glad to share Char!
A Klondike bar is an ice cream bar covered with a wonderful chocolate coating. This is a spoof of a video of the old Klondike commercials: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPu4nD925dM
Becky McCray said
Liz, I just caught #271 - and I am *dying* laughing!
Mike Vizdos said
sounds like the FAA went to a paper based system in Atlanta for the planes to get off the ground and things started spiraling out of control.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hi Deb, welcome to twitter. Jump right in; we’re friendly.
Mike Vizdos said
would love feedback on the new site … http://64.139.141.75/ making the cutover tomorrow.
Mike Vizdos said
thank you Amy
Amy Derby said
Phil — I googled it.
That commercial is funny. I love it.
Mike Vizdos said
i am using the name mvizdos on twitter if anyone is interested!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Deb, following you on Twitter now.
@Becky, so tell me, do you favorite yourself often?
--Deb said
Mike, I think it looks great.
I’m fighting with a new site, too, and am NOT even remotely a programmer, so you can imagine how well that’s going! So, you know, I’m impressed.
Mike Vizdos said
Deb let me know if I can help in any way.
Mike Vizdos said
Liz when I get home tomorrow or Thursday we need to follow-up on a conversation
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Hey Liz:
BawldGuy @deafmom Tell Liz I said hi, and prefer French Silk pie.
Amy Derby said
Mike — I like the 64.139.141.75. Big improvement over the old site, me thinks.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Mike
this way for the title & tagline
Implementing Scrum
Starting Tough Conversations
about Software Development
for readability and design — I’d right align the subheads under the “m” in Scrum.
Mike Vizdos said
o and exciting news,,,, got a call from CNN tonight over the FAA mess today. Dunno if i will be aired :-(. They will follow-up with me mananana.
Amy Derby said
Glenda — I like your blog too!!
Liz — You know a lot of cool people.
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Cool news, Mike. Hope they air it!
--Deb said
Thanks, Mike. I’m getting there, but it’s a learning process. I’m using the Wordpress “The Morning After” theme and it’s lovely, but still a lot to figure out.
The site is up, but I haven’t put up any “real” posts yet. (Thank heaven for Lorem Ipsum.)
I’d appreciate opinions, though.

Becky McCray said
Karen, I favorite myself some, and I have a lot of faves. BUT…
Someone else accused Liz of being self-centered, while they had thousands of their own tweets marked as favorites!
Mike Vizdos said
Let’s chat later this week offline when I get home if you want. mvizdos@gmail.com remind me
Phil Gerbyshak said
Glad you enjoyed it Amy. Klondike bars make me smile
Great site Mike! Very clean!
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
Ah, so that’s the story! Liz– self-centered? Too funny!
Rick Wolff said
I haven’t been into this open-mic as attentively as last time. Distracted with some self-imposed homework. Gonna head out. You’ve all been sweet! (See what I did there?) Goodnight.
Amy Derby said
Deb — OH, YOU’RE THE KNITTING CHICK!! Hey!! I like the layout.
ME Liz Strauss said
Actually Karen the words used were “abject vanity.”
Karen Putz / DeafMom said
All right, time for me to get off here and pay attention to my kids before they hit the sack. Thanks for the chat– I think I gained ten pounds here tonight! Bye all!
--Deb said
Amy, yep–knitting, spinning, reading, writing…
Amy Derby said
Hey for all you twitter experts, here’s a question. What does it mean when someone puts the # behind a word?
ME Liz Strauss said
Mike,
You’ll be better at remembering I think than I will. But I’m sure ready to talk when you want to.
Mike Vizdos said
#294 — Ug. Bried Frain. looks like the tagline does not take html.
Amy Derby said
Goodnight Karen.
Mike Vizdos said
#301 Thank you
Amy Derby said
“abject vanity”?? I don’t even know what that means.
ME Liz Strauss said
Don’t worry about it then, Mike!
It’s not a major thing. Only I see it. It’s a Liz readability tweak.
Becky McCray said
The # is a hash tag, used to make searches easier. We might all label our tweets about SOBCon with #SOBCon08, so we would have a consistent tag to search for. (It’s also used by a specific Hashtag search site, but you can use any Twitter search, also.)
Amy Derby said
Thanks Becky.

Desserts are great for after dinner
When the sweet tooth takes over our mouths
As a bribe or reward or just as a treat

Or Cookies and Cream for dessert, no matter
Whatever tickles your fancy, even plain Jello
Dessert always makes us feel like The Mad Hatter.
