The Mic Is On: We’re Finding Our Dreams in Business and in Life. . .

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

We’re Talking About How to Find and Follow Our Dreams in Business and in Life. . . with Guest Host Tariq Khan from The Kitchen Table

We might talk about

Hiker on top of mountain

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey.

Oh, and bring a link, if you have one to share.

Char ~ A couple of years ago, I read a suggestion of creating a poster board as a ‘time line’ of sorts. On the board you would create a visual that would be from where you are now and ending at where you want to be.

It’s a great tool to have handy to keep you focused on striving for those goals.

Even placing actual photos of a car, a trip, a home, a pool, a college, etc. It was one of the best tips I’d heard and it kept me going for a long time.

Now, I’ve gotten so used to that one, I need a little something else to light the fire.

Hi Char, I work big picture in.

For example, first I figured out my purpose in 4 lines. Then I wrote a list of lifetime goals that would make up the picture of that purpose (as much as I can tell anyway). Then I wrote down 1 thing I could do in one year for each one of the lifetime things. Then I broke it into what I could do each month to meet this year’s goals. Some are down to daily tasks.

I keep a spreadsheet of my monthy targets so I can tell whether I do them or not.

I tried using Joe’s Goals ( http://www.joesgoals.com/ )to track, but it wasn’t as handy as the spreadsheet.

  56. March 20th, 2007 at 7:28 pm
    Tariq Khan said

Marti, I think I remember. It is a cool concept of microenterprise.

One of the things that I do for a living is to help people start and grow businesses. I’ve worked for some large Fortune 100 energy companies, and have used that experience to help others.

Char, what I often do is to “parse” through my idea and break it into small pieces, then write plans for each. As I build it back up, the mecanics become clearer. That then helps me decide how to approach my long-term goal. My ability to predict is often based on the industry.

Kiva lets you connect with and loan money to unique small businesses in the developing world. By choosing a business on Kiva.org, you can “sponsor a business” and help the world’s working poor make great strides towards economic independence. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates from the business you’ve sponsored. As loans are repaid, you get your loan money back

By the way, a friend introduced me to a “vision board”. It’s basically a corkboard, covered with a nice material / background of your choice, and covered with things that represent 4 areas of your life that you want to manifest: connection to “God/Spirit/Universe” (insert word(s) of choice); new things you want to bring in; wonderful current things you want to continue; past experiences / things you are grateful for.

I like it… I haven’t checked mine lately, but I’m betting that number of things that I had pictures of or otherwise had on my board are now in my life…

Difference between dream and goal? Hmmmm…

I don’t physically “write down” dreams or goals, but I do think about them, and try to assess what actions have helped to introduce new people to my writing. Self promotion is very awkward, never knowing when you’ve gone too far and irritated more than informed.

Ah Char, I see your dilema after reading your post. I must admit that I could not get past that stage in my old business and it ate us alive. If I had it to do over again, I would outsource accounting and operations (in your case admin). Stick with marketing and if you still like, do the actual work. Nneka said, “It’s tough to grow beyond the point of doing everything yourself.” That is a very common problem. One of the things that I tend to do for my clients is to help them look forward and build structures in their companies that are flexible enough to accommodate change and growth. Another piece is to help them secure financing. They often have resources that they do not recognize as collateral.

Rick (86): I DO think it’s a kind of grief work… That great thing that you’ve got has turned out to be only a stepping stone / stopping place and not “IT”. Whatever definition we have of ourselves is constantly becoming too small, whether we notice it or not…

When we do notice it is when the grief for the “lost” self starts. Except it’s not so much that we lost ourself, as that we’ve lost the comfortable definition of ourself that we had…

It may seem like you don’t have time to do this, but volunteer to be on the leadership team somewhere in your life. It could be in your kindergartner’s school or the captain of a local sports team. You’ll learn to delegate in something that does not seem so life or death.

Also, it will force you into a position where you have to turn a piece of your business over to someone else because you won’t have the time.

Nneka, thanks for the kind words.

Monique, one of the hardest things for people to do when growing a business is to stay self-aware (in the good sense). We get so focused on what we are doing — meeting the goals — that we forget to realize that what we are doing is coming from within. That’s where I think leadership comes from, as well as confidence.

With external and internal awareness you can see what needs to be done, even if that means letting go to enhance the whole. Same way with children, it’s then easier to let go.

Tariq — a good strategy before I implement it…? I’m a bit of an intuitive, so I think I trust my gut, first and foremost…. I also “follow my passion”. If I’m really passionate about something, and it has “staying power”, then I go with it. If I’m all fired up, but it fizzles, then I’m inclined to walk away.

I’m a bit of a ‘brute force’ type when it comes to strategy. It likely goes a bit like this: do the work / take regular steps towards what I want (at least weekly if I’m really working on a goal); feel the feelings because there’s likely something to learn or I would have got this thing I’m after BEFORE; create the (new) metaphors to support where I want to go; visualize / pray / journal… Kinda like that… Unless I’ve totally misunderstood your question! After all, the specifics of a strategy will have some uniqueness for each goal. But this is what I think of as the “meta strategy” that applies in all situations.

Actually I have a few, Tariq!

One of the things I struggling with now is outsourcing. I’ve a PA (part-time) but she handles my offline stuff (nothing related to my online chores). I’ve work with her for many years, and would love to get her help for some of my online stuff. But decline many times as she couldn’t afford the time and commitment plus she hates techie stuff. I’ve tried outsourcing but had many failures (largely on their delivery). But what’s my concern is that, my online revenue doesn’t justify the expenditure. I don’t wish to use other revenue to offset it–for short-term (which i did)I’m ok but not for too long.

Renee, I’m sure that you’ve tried asking aound for quality outsourcing. If you cannot find it, then there is the usual workaround — find someone cheaper or who will work for money in the future, raise money (stock sale, loans) or use help in spurts (try to get the same person each time). As more cash comes in, you can add to the staff.

The problem can be that if you do not add more people, you may not get over the growth threshold that you are encountering. Spending the money can also hurt. You will have to find a balance, or seek outside help — a consultant.

My wife and I have a small neighborhood theatre. It’s been around for 40 years. We bought it eight years ago. Some families are on their third and fourth generation. I like to tell people we sell memories. We’re only open on the weekends.

Our marketing consists of a newspaper ad on Fridays, a website that is getting more popular with our younger patrons, and activity in the community. It’s profitable, but not something to make a living off of. We’ve doubled our business since we bought it, but attendance has stagnated.

Rick, I think that a good thing might be to ask them. Send out carefully designed surveys to your customers. If you don’t know who they are you can use promotional means — quite cheap — to obtain a decent list.

You can also have survey forms at the theatre and on the website. Ask those that come more often why, and find out their demographic. Targeted advertising to groups that want to come to the theatre can help.

You can also do drawings, games, parties, sponsorships, etc. I hope these quick thoughts help or spur your own thoughts. There’s more on my mind, but this should suffice as a start.

BTW .. re: Dreams .. I have an anecdote about dreams back in the ’80’s and early ’90’s .. when I was in business with my brothers in a confectionary business ..

In my early days working in the public accounting sector, we were quite familiar with the 3 types of businesses out there. (1) The ones that have lots of gross sales, but no net income. (2) the ones with low gross sales but almost all net income. and (3) those businesses that really didn’t care but sure paid themselves and their family businesses quite well!

Well, when I decided to quit public accounting and partner with my brothers, we started at $100,000 gross sales and net $30,000 and one of our business plans was to incorporate all 3 of the ‘plans’ above (increase our sales, increase our net, and pay ourselves well!). Well - in dollar terms we stated basically, that our goal was to reach $1,000,000 by 4 years.

We made that in 3 years - Unfortunately, we reached that annual level in expenses - not sales.

Better pictures are in the works, Renee. The site is built on Wordpress, but is mostly static pages, thanks to the inspiration of the site for the playhouse Ben Yoskovitz works with.

We’ve thought about marathons, HART, and I would love it, but financially they’re too prohibitive. One year we did run a family film during the matinees, and an adult film at night. People got confused about which show they were coming to, though. Two iron rules we have now - don’t change showtimes, and don’t mix films.

Rick. I can see why that Adult and matinee wouldn’t mix. And, I can also see why regular times must help too. I think it’s nice to know that, if I wanted to - I could catch that 7:40pm movie (any night of the week) and not worry that the movie started at 7:15pm instead and have to wait until 9:15pm where, I wouldn’t stick around.

There’s this theatre in our town, has 8-movies, that spends about 1/2 hour advertising in between each movie. Last time we went, there was a lot of business cards just zoomed in and placed there in a rotating basis over and over. And, there was a lot of website designers advertising too for some reason. They would alternate between trivia questions. I think they did that to keep the canteen open longer between movies.

Tariq .. I think I asked it already :) but, I can try to be a little more specific.

One of the reasons I moved towards blogging and online ventures is because as a professional, offline earnings is pretty much limited by (1) the hours I want to work and (2) hourly rate and (3) number of hours in a day that is billable.

I’m at that stage now trying to expand my opportunities at HART-Empire Network and need to either make more money doing less work - or build my base bigger and grow by hiring writers or others to work or assist or partner.

Unfortunately, offline work prevents me to focus on first option and lack of sleeps catches up on 2nd option.

I’m looking for that elusive 3rd option.

Hey HART - we´re doing good :) Hopefully the website will be ready for alpha soon…but the same problem here - time is something I have to learn to use better ( if there is really no way to get more time out of a day)! I´m thinking about doing a distraction diet…

    Hart,

I posted my goodnight before seeing your comment.

I’m a business consultant, but also a lawyer, so I understand the dilemma.

I can tell you what I did, which was to sacrifice big time to build a business that required less hours and made more money for me. I consciously built my practice around my passion rather than an income, hoping that income would follow. I’m now starting to turn the corner after several years of patiently sowing seeds.

However, that story may not offer you much, because there’s no general answer. You are caught between constraints, but they are well known to you. Just by looking at your site I can see a hint of yur skills and intelligence, and I am convinced that you not only know all of this, but also what to do.

If I may venture an opinion — yes, I know what they are worth! — I think that you will come to a place where you will want to take a plunge, and your circumstances, skills and resources will help you commit to a course without much regret. I say commit because you have options, it’s really a decision.

I also think that you know that too. I’d be happy to continue our conversation by email if you’d like. If you can, please use my blog email. If not, please ask Liz to share my email with you.

A DD is my metaphor for when you analyze everything that´s not healthy for your focus and get it out of your kitchen (enviroment at large). Most of that stuff in my case is bad behavior like having the tv on, listening to music etc. while sitting on my pc. Or stupid stuff like checking mail 20x / day…etc.
I´ll probably blog about it tomorrow ;)

    Hart,

Another thing. There are ways that you can raise funds. I’d need more specifics to be helpful, and am willing to discuss.

Good night, all. I truly enjoyed your company.

    My dream…hmm….

I want to make a well-known name for myself as a graphic designer and writer.

I know I can write. The breaks for design, I will admit, haven’t been coming my way. I’ve not given up, not by a long shot, but I still have an ad-hoc method of self-promotion brought on by battling my own demons of discouragement daily (depression has been a real issue for me in the past) and the demands of a 65-hour work week–40 hours of which are absolutely flushed down the toilet courtesy of an employer that treats me with contempt that is less thinly veiled as the years go by.

People have given me hands up. Liz made me an SOB (which shall ever be displayed with pride on my blog (http://zehnkatzen.blogspot.com)), and a fellow named Pariah S. Burke has been giving me what mentoring he can (he has created the sites http://designorati.com and http://quarkvsindesign.com, news sites for designerly folk, and in those sites he has allowed me much room to write and to explore).

What is really frustrating is that I can’t seem to tap the secret of making those advantages into solid improvements. Today, three years after creating my ‘blog, and despite the building of Brand Me I’ve been doing, I still get only about 20-30 hits a day. If I’m inspiring or interesting anybody, I don’t know it.

I have come on to one possible useful tool. I don’t know how many of you have heard of this, I have just stumbled on it but I understand it’s been rather wildly popular self-managment concept over the past few years, and it’s called GTD (Getting Things Done). This fellow has distilled what seems to be common sense concepts into a workflow that can be followed.

It’s strange, I’m compelled to digress, that all the things that make up GTD are things that have occurred to me at one time or another but it took the insight of one man to knit it all together in one neat chain.

There’s an article on GTD on Wikipedia here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GTD. It’s quick to read but says everything that has to be said about it. One look at it and I knew that this was a tool I could get some use out of. And I don’t have to buy a book to get it.

Anyhow, it looks like GTD will allow me to add a little something that I’ve been missing from my repertoire most of my life; discipline. See, I swear that whoever came up with the tautology “hard work pays off eventually; laziness pays off right now” watched me. There is something to inertia; getting going on anything for me is accomplished by setting off a box or two of TNT under myself.

So, after all this thinking out loud, what again are my dreams:

To be a design voice of note.
To be in demand as a graphic designer.
For my ‘blog to be everyone’s second-favorite ‘blog (look at it this way; Kings come and go. Courtiers are forever. One of the Moody Blues once said they wanted to be everyone’s second-favorite band. Look how historic and respected they are).

And I gave you all some links already. I’d say the most important is the Wikipedia GTD entry. Here’s one more I found quite engaging:

    http://www.taskfreak.com

Taskfreak! is a PHP application that allows you to implement GTD by keeping a simple list of what you got in the air on any machine that you have a MySQL server on (my personal desktop machine mounts MySQL). In addition to giving me experience in working around with PHP and MySQL it also makes putting what I want to work with up in front of me and also makes it easy to alter, reorder, and fun to play with. It comes in two flavors–single user and multi-user. If you don’t have MySQL access you can put it on your machine (get it from http://mysql.org…hey, there’s another link!), the MySQL Community Server is free of charge, as is Taskfreak!

Next I’m going to look into Thinking Rock, but I have to upgrade my Java to 1.5…

    Welcome back Tariq ..

I might take you up on that and be in touch via email.

    Years, eh? I’m almost at year#2 ..

I remember that our firm once had a client back in the mid-80’s who was a high priced lawyer making a great living .. and then all of a sudden he quit to buy a popcorn franchise. Smartest thing he ever did and made much more than being a lawyer.

There’s always an internal conflict (and related party conflicts like spouse and family) when you are trying to do it all .. stuff you are really good at doing, and stuff you really like doing. Anyway..

    … and G’night again :)

Steli .. that’s hillarious! Because I used to turn off my TV to make me more productive, but now I seem to turn it on so I know what time it is! I have all these preset channels flipping automatically around the dial on every hour .. from Star Trek, Stargate, Lone STar Channel, Comedy shows, and even Ambient music if I’m desparate - but, when it switches to a new channel - I know I lost an hour.

Good HART (and Carma). Just burnin’ some midnight oil working while trying not to wake the household up with my sniffling (allergies).

On tonight’s topic, I am following my dreams by working hard on several online publishing fronts … but also trying not to fall into dreamland doing it!

I’ve got a similar dream happening… working late and burning the midnight oil. Everytime I go to print some reports, my dogs wake up from the noise and wakes up my sleeping wife, who is now on OT hours, waking up at 4:10am every morning now. So, my dream is to get a better soundproof door one day here in my office!
