The Mic Is On: We’re Happy to be Home . . .

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:07 pm

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

The Mic Is On

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

Let’s Talk About the Joys of Being Home!

home-at-last2.JPG

What do we miss when we’re away . . . and how do we feel when we “get back home.” What makes it “home”?

Here’s a few ideas to get us started:

  • our own house, apt, condo
  • our own bed, alarm clock
  • our own chair
  • our own kitchen, cooking
  • our own bathroom, bathtub, shower, hot tub
  • our own family, friends, pets
  • our own back yard, deck
  • our own computer, telephone, TV
  • our own car, transportation
  • our own routine

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey.

Oh, and bring a link, if you have one to share.

On a more serious note, I’ve always said that home is wherever my wife happens to be.

It’s the smiles of the people we love that most define home, I think.

That and a fridge where everything is just where I put it!

I think I miss the sound and smell and feel of home. When I think about this house and I look back to past places I’ve lived, it’s a combination of these low-level details that seemed to come together in a matrix of “home” in my mind.

Thanks, Tariq! For me, home is wherever my wife is. I think it’s the smiles of those we care for that define ‘home’, so I have lots of home (as you can see). ;-)

    Hi, Rick.

Mike, I agree. Lovely One makes me feel at home as well, and you certainly are surrounded by smiles!

Our first Christmas was just after we had come back from our honeymoon, and we ate Chrismas dinner using cloth napkins over moving boxes — but she was there. I felt right at home.

Now, a you say, there is more to feel at home about because we have added two more smiles.

A Klondike Bar is basically vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate, but with many other luscious flavors. My favorites are the peanut butter and the crunchy.

    What makes it home:

Kitties. Yes, it’s teh kitties…nine of them at present. We’ve had as many as thirteen. My net de plume (ZehnKatzen) is a kind-of-a-portmanteau of the German words for ten (zehn) and the plural of cats (katzen). But we don’t collect the kitties…we’re not cat lovers that way. You wont see us on any local news program anytime soon about pet hoarding.

While it is true that, in many cases, as the underrated sage Tom Weller has said, “Home is where the house is”, it’s not home unless it’s somewhere in the northern Willamette Valley of Oregon. I was born in Silverton, a sleepy little place near Salem, which is a sleepy big place (during my lifetime it’s added about 70,000 people but it still feels like it did when I was but a neat thing). I left Oregon for a while once. Depression resulted.

I am a native Oregonian and I lurves me my hills and my valley and my volcanoes on the horizon.

And being in Portland, in particular, nourishes me. “Stadt Luft macht frei”, a German might say-city air liberates, in other words. I say the worst day in Portland is, most likely, better than the best day just about anywhere else.

    Here’s a link for you:
    http://portlandmaps.com

This is a database of map information and aerial photeaux compiled by the city and maintained year in, year out. You can find everything about Portland on the ground…property lines and values, transit, roads, sewers, power…it’s all there.

Also, a good way to get the lay of the land is our much-lauded transit syste, TriMet, acessable at http://trimet.org

Gotta rush off…Kitties ate the Klondikes. Those little greedy guts B-)

Mike, mea culpa…hehehe here’s the entire song by Diana Ross. ;)

    HOME (Think of Home)

    When I think of home
I think of a place where there’s love overflowing
    I wish I was home
I wish I was back there with the
    Things I´ve been knowing

Wind that makes the tall grass bend into leaning
Suddenly the raindrops that fall have a meaning
Sprinklin’ the scene, makes it all clean

Maybe there’s a chance for me to go back
Now that I have some direction
It sure would be nice to be back home
    Where there’s love and affection
And just maybe I can convince time to slow up
Giving me enough time in my life to grow up
    Time, be my friend
    Let me start again

Suddenly my world´s gone and changed it’s face
But I still know where I’m going
I have had my mind spun around in space
    Yet I’ve watched it growing

    Oh If you’re list’ning God
Please don’t make it hard to know
If we should believe in things that we see
Tell us, should we try and stay or
    Should we run away
Or would it be better just to let things be?

Living here, in this brand new world
    Might be a fantasy
But it taught me to love
So it’s real, real to me

    And I’ve learned
That we must look inside our hearts
To find a world full of love
    Like yours
    Like mine

    Like home…

I met old friends for the first time there
Not any or all at the famous o’Hare

But I learned more than I ever knew
About my friends, both old and new.

So, when we do it again Next Year
If you can’t show up, I’ll shed a tear

For friendship and fun you’ll surely miss
But from the Conference we’ll throw you a kiss.

I guess I’ll start with: For Mother’s Day .. I finally managed to take all the digital pictures taken at my Folks 50th Wedding Anniversary last October 2006 .. and got them printed up (at Wal-Mart no less), made a couple of albums, and even paid for them! haha.. oh ya, and a homemade Card too with one of the pics on the front cover.

You see, I gathered all the pictures and put them online http://HBSMC.com/50th/ (if you click on Page 8 .. the top pic is my folks) .. and my mom kept saying everytime I visited her .. “C’mon! I’ll even pay to get those pictures developed!” .. or “C’mon! I’ll even pick them up from your house and take them to get developed even!!!” … She’s soooooo needy

PS: it was also my older brother’s 50th birthday too .. I took him to get a haircut (4th one down on page 9). He’s one of those goons who’s hair is down to his belt. He believes if it ever gets cut - he will lose his “power”
