The Mic Is On: We’re in Las Vegas!

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:03 pm

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

We’re Talking About Las Vegas!

We might talk about

Picture taken from 14th floor of Treasure Island Casino in Las Vegas around 9 a.m.

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey.

Oh, and bring a link, if you have one to share.

    Char,
I’ve been to Vegas several times. My two favorites were once for a teachers’ conference — it was like being inside unreality in a city of unreality.

The other was for a focus group staying at the Xcalibur that was too weird. Luckily the TV show CSI wasn’t being filmed yet. Or I would have been convinced everyone there was playing a part in an episode of it.

Robert - I’m not sure if I would think three months in Vegas was fun or not. Three days is usually a good amount of time for me.

Liz - Excalibur is not my favorite place at all. I have never been for a convention or business - always for fun.

  33. April 10th, 2007 at 7:24 pm
    Robert Hruzek said

I guess I’m not your average visitor to Vegas; I don’t gamble, drink, smoke, or run around. I agree with your assessment, Liz - it’s unreality inside unreality.

But there was fascinating stuff to do and see all the same, and if you’re a “people watcher” like me, it’s never a dull moment!

  34. April 10th, 2007 at 7:24 pm
    Becky McCray said

    OK, here’s my husband’s story:
He went when he as 16 or so with his family. Since his Dad was in a wheelchair, and Joe helped him, he got to go on the gambling floor, underage! Scandalous! ;) He loved it!

  35. April 10th, 2007 at 7:25 pm
    Jeremy David said

I’m pretty sure if i went to Vegas I’d end up losing $1000s of dollars, which would put the rest of my adventures in jeopardy… and I do not know how happy people would be about that, ha ha.

Robert - I like to gamble (nothing extravagant) but don’t drink, smoke or get wild. I do love Vegas though. The people watching is fabulous.

How about the shows? My favorite are Mystere and O by Cirque du Soliel. Blue Man Group was good too.

    Hi, Becky!

Yes, we saw the Blue Men, too. Very… interesting. I was a bit let down though; expected more, I guess.

My favorite thing to do on off time was take a big, thick book and go sit in the sidewalk cafe at the foot of the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Casino/Hotel.

It’s right across the street from the Bellagio where the dancing fountains are, and every 15 minutes, we’d get a wonderful show, music, etc.

This was in the fall, and it was pretty much perfect weather.

    My favorite times while there…

oh on twitter i almost forgot… the founder has a pile of cash… and is an expert at hiring and working pr on a national print, tv and new media level…. he is a darling in the press.

plus quite simply twitter has this strangely addictive quality to it. especially for people that are so used to texting…. and it is so stupid simple it is DUHHHH… actually we developed similar technology about 2 years ago but never went in this direction.

    rodney - Sounds good.

I will be re-visiting the recording in the coming days. If it suits sobcon I will finish the video for such. And if by chance, the idea and recording don’t mesh I will need to wait for another light bulb and use the recording for that, which could be a bummer, in fact.

plus quite simply twitter has this strangely addictive quality to it.

That could be the reason my instinct said not to sign up for twitter when it first appeared in the blogosphere.

    Jessica,
You are wise. The addiction wears for some very quickly. It depaends on how you use it. Some folks think they are ons stage. Some folks forget the world is listening. Some folks only listen. Some folks only leave messages. Twitter is flexible that way.

Liz - do you have a copy of the sobcon logo, before it was flattened for web use, that I could use in the vid possibly? If not I’ll grab it off the sobcon website with your permission of course?

Wow. I say no to twitter. I get enough jitter both online and offline as it is. I’ll just observe from afar and be happy with that.

    Jessica,
Grab whatever you need. The logo was made on the blog. I think you’ll have to reverse engineer it. :)

Good evening and I guess good night to everyone … I’ll be up for a bit plotting a sinister (read: nice) little way of plugging SOBCon via my blog. I got to go to Vegas a couple years ago and saw Blue Man Group with my brother - very fun. I have to say though, that driving through the Joshua Tree National Forest in the Arizona desert at cruise velocity while listening to sweet grooves was perhaps the trip highlight. :)

If you made it through Joshua Tree during that short time when the cactus were in bloom, OMG! I’ve done that. It’s amazing. We listened to Tubular Bells and felt like we were on another planet. It was so special. People to try get there by planning, but the rainfall and weather change the time it occurs every year. It’s a hard thing to carch. :)

So sorry I had to cut out early. I enjoyed reading through the comments just now!

Tariq, the Ann Margaret reference I made was to the movie “Viva Las Vegas” which starred Elvis Presley and Ann Margaret. She looked great in it, that is why I asked if I could be her - LOL

The roller coasters and attractions sound amazing. I hope I get to visit sometime! Thanks for the information and great conversation, everyone, and thanks to Liz for hosting such an incredible event every week!

Peace and joy to all of you!
