The Mic Is On: We’re List Crazy!
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
Tonight we’re gathering lists!
We might also talk about
- Holiday Lists, End of Year Lists — too many to name
- Best of Lists, Top Ten Lists, Greatest/Worst Lists
- Lists we wish we could give away
- Wishlists and Dreams
AND THE EVER POPULAR,
Basil the code-writing donkey, and Milton the Moose.
–ME “Liz” Strauss

Hey Liz,
Did I make it? Did I make it?
Am I first???
ME Strauss said
Hi Joe!
You’re the first!
Joe said
Now what? It’s been so long since I was first, especially after losing my voice for a week.
ME Strauss said
You lost your voice?
Scorpia said
Hey Liz, thought I’d drop in for a little while. Don’t know how much I’ll say, though. I’m not too big on lists. But I do want you to know I can’t count very well. My extensive DVD collection is actually nine, not ten. I counted something that wasn’t a movie. Heh.
Hope you’re keeping warm up there.
john t unger said
Hi Liz,
can’t stay long ’cause I’ve got work to do, but I wanted to drop in and say hi!
Joe said
Yeah, don’t you remember I had the Akismet virus? I causes Bloggers to lose their voice in comments and trackbacks.
Joe said
I see You got on a pretty impressive list…
john t unger said
Funny the topic is lists, actually… I’m working on a bunch of new hacks for TypeLists right now.
ME Strauss said
Hey, Scorpia!
There the best of 2006 lists. I bet you could trip over one if you looked.
I’m keeping warm and inside the computer!
ME Strauss said
Hi John!
Nice to see you. Got any hints on how to code lists this year for our blog posts?
ME Strauss said
Thanks, Joe.
I feel pretty good about being that list. It is a nice one.
Scorpia said
Ah Liz, those best lists can sometimes be amusing, but they’re only opnions after all. I usually do my best to avoid “best of the year” stuff most of the time.
ME Strauss said
Ah, Joe,
I just caught your comment about how you lost your voice. Akisment is making a list of the 1000 ways to say it’s sorry.
Carolyn Manning said
Hi everybody, I love lists. Don’t always pay attention to them, but I love them anyway.
Valeria Maltoni said
Hi Liz,
Thank you for the invite. Not sure how this works. Do I put the list right into the comment space?
ME Strauss said
Hi Carolyn!
What kind of lists do you like?
ME Strauss said
Hi Valieria!
Welcome. No worries we just talk about anything and everything.
Everyone this is Valeria, the Conversation Agent!
Scorpia said
Hi Valeria. Liz mentioned you during our BAD conversation, but I don’t think I quite clearly understood what a “conversation agent” does. So what do you do?
Carolyn Manning said
mostly to do right now. and to buy and to save for . . . .
ME Strauss said
Oh yeah, and Valeria, once it gets going, you’ll have to remember to refresh your screen a lot.
Hey Joe, introduce Valeria around will you?
Carolyn Manning said
I forget who it was, but somebody published two books of lists about 15 – 20 years ago. Now, that was silly.
Carolyn Manning said
Hi Valeria, nice to meet you
ME Strauss said
Carolyn . . .
You LIKE “to do” lists????
Valeria Maltoni said
Hi everyone. A Conversation Agent connects ideas and people. The conversation is the new marketplace — I’m in marketing and communications, on the corporate side.
Thank you for your warm welcome.
Carolyn Manning said
Do you think that’s something I should bring up with my therapist? Liking to do lists?
Valeria Maltoni said
Lists are great progressions in thought so they work best when they cascade naturally.
Scorpia said
Lists? Plural? You mean one isn’t enough???
Carolyn Manning said
‘progressions in thought’ I like that. Kind of a vertical mind map
ME Strauss said
Valerie,
I like them when they cascade as well.
Where in Italy are you from? My family is from north of Bologna. Modena, really.
Joe said
I did a Thank You List back in September of the 22 Blogs who linked to me.
I better get started on the End of Year Thank You list soon, as of today, there are 90 Blogs linking to me that should be thanked. (hopefully, there will be even more by the end of the month).
ME Strauss said
Carolyn,
A vertical mindmap, good one . . . maybe you just found your way out of therapy.
Valeria Maltoni said
That’s where I’m from. I attended high school withone of Pavarotti’s daughters.
Joe said
Hey Valeria, sorry I was in a time warp for a minute. Let me catch up and I’ll introduce you around.
Carolyn Manning said
Joe, a link thank you is a great idea. I just might follow your lead and hit the publish button at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Now to put that on my list
Delphine said
hello everyone!
I finally made it!
I have a list of lists I will be naming off… as soon as I get my crying baby
ME Strauss said
Too wild!
My grandmother grew up in Ospitale. My grandfather came from Modena. My maiden name is Monterastelli.
Valeria Maltoni said
One of my recent lists was crafted to show the interrelation of business bloggers and how I discovered them through each other.
ME Strauss said
Valeria,
You should know that we leave links here to thing that we think are worth sharing. That list sounds like a good one.
ME Strauss said
Hey Delphine!
Welcome!!
Thanks for coming!!
Trisha said
I’m late – I lost track of the time. I can’t stay too long though – House will be on at 8.
Valeria Maltoni said
Liz: there are no coincidences in life. I met Ann Michael through Bob Sutton’s blog to discover that we live a couple of miles from each other.
Carolyn: since I mentioned lists, there are also lateral lists, as in lateral thinking.
ME Strauss said
Scorpia,
One is always enough. There are never required rules here. We only have one gamaing level!
Chris Cree said
Heya everyone! Anyone up for a Klondike bar?
ME Strauss said
Ah, Chris,
Do Klondike bars taste different in Chicago?
Joe said
I’m not going to link to it, but I did a List of all the Home Business Links on the Group Writing project Darren did on ProBlogger months ago and I’m still getting hits from it.
Delphine said
ok, I have so many lists…
1. things to buy
2. things to do
3. places to take kids
4. foods to intro to kids
5. books to read to/with kids
6. books to read
7. sequence pictures to take
8. blogs to start
9. songs/jingles/rhymes to sing to kids
10. posts to nail
I would love to see links to other people’s lists. I’m going to start posting on those topics.
Valeria Maltoni said
Liz: how do I leave links? I’m a newbee on blogging.
That is a great name and now looking at you I can see the Italian heritage.
Scorpia said
Actually Liz, sometimes I think one is already too many! (or two many?)
Chris, thanks, but I’d rather have a Glenlivet
Carolyn Manning said
Why would one want a lateral list? Does it accomplish anything?
ME Strauss said
Trisha,
I’m just delighted you made it.
I’m glad you’re no longer sitting away taking care of your pain.
Trisha said
I’m always making lists – but then I forget about them.
Service Untitled - Douglas said
Hey everyone. Just popping in to say hello! Wont’ be on too long, though.
Valeria Maltoni said
Carolyn: it expands your thinking. I use lists to challenge my thought patterns as well.
Delphine said
Trisha,
I’m the same way, I make lists to forget about them.
The most interesting list was when the Pope John Paul (or the Vatican) put out a list of the best 100 movies ever made.
ME Strauss said
Hey Doug!
Welcome this fine Tuedsay,
Did you see that two of your bloggers are Top Ten Bloggers for Writers?
Joe said
Yeah, another guy. I’ll take one of those Klondike bars Chris…
Derek Anderson said
Hello people. My first time on the open comment night.
Excellent Idea.
Liz Rocks!
Delphine said
hi Derek,
it’s my first time too
ME Strauss said
Hey Derek,
Here have a cold one to go with your rocks!
Everyone this is Derek from Widget Labs.
Valeria Maltoni said
Holiday lists are very short and they are more ‘to be’ than ‘to do’:
* Enjoy your loved ones
* Fill your heart with peace
* Be thankful
Carolyn Manning said
Hmmmmm. I’ll try to remember to come by and see you tomorrow Valeria. Your blog looks interesting
Delphine said
nice list Valeria, short and to the point
Rick Cockrum said
Good evening all!
About the only lists I do are todo lists, books that want me to buy them lists, movies I want to buy lists, Christmas lists, goal lists, shopping lists, film delivery method lists.
I think I have too many lists.
Valeria Maltoni said
Carolyn: philosophy is one of my favorite bodies of knowledge. I will definitely visit you.
Delphine said
hi Rick,
a thought just occurred,
do you write down all of your lists?
or are many stored in your head?
Scorpia said
Rick easy solution: make a list of all your lists. Then cross them off one by one. No more lists!
Derek Anderson said
I invite all to stop by at Widgets Lab and view some of the layout suggestions that our hostess made.
She is such a fantastic person for taking time out to help me!
Thanks again, Liz
ME Strauss said
Hi Delphine,
I store my lists on a piece of a paper under my mouse. Then I never read them — ever.
Rick Cockrum said
Most end up written down in a notebook, a planner, or in spreadsheets. I forgot my password lists.
Delphine said
Liz,
I do that too, but I just realized I’m carrying around WAY too much in my head, no wonder I’m confused!
ME Strauss said
HI Rick!
I meant to say that when you came in, but I got distracted reading your lists.
I like “books that want me to buy them.”
Rick Cockrum said
Ah Scorpia, I only wish I could. I have a memory like a sieve. Most of those are permanent lists that get updated as needed.
Valeria Maltoni said
Hello Rick,
Shards of Counsciousness looks interesting, I’ll be visiting. My passwords are in code in my PDA, no way I could even have a spreadsheet.

WELcOME, Valeria. There is a Valerian root that is an herb used as a sedative. Are you two related? You seem peaceful.
If someone would publish a List of Lists, so we could easily detect what lists were most relevant to our transient and fickle demeanors, now that would be something.
1. Don’t make lists
2. If you do make a list, don’t number the points
4. If you do number the items in your list, at least be detail oriented
5. If you must be vague in a list, redeem yourself by ending each item with a period or coma
6. If you reject punctuated each listed item, then turn your list into a run-on sentence that appears James Joycean!
ME Strauss said
Delphine,
At least you have a reason to be confused. I’m just confused as a natural state.
ME Strauss said
Derek,
No problem. You asked nicely. That was a big part of it.
Valeria Maltoni said
Thank you, Delphine. Wow, I love the graphic on your blog, and look at how clean it is. You should check our “Back in Skinny Jeans” – some of her topics might appeal to you.

Now I know that ME Strauss and Liz Strauss are two similar but distinct entities.
A Liz Strauss has been emailing me while this Open Mic blog commentary has been going tonight.
I don’t see how, there it is again, another Gmail pop up notification box in the bottom right corner of my browser window, I don’t see how she, there it goes again, how she can simultaneously be here and there.
How can I be two places at once when I’m nowhere at all? as Firesign Theatre once asked.
Rick Cockrum said
The thing with the books are you never really own them. You’re just a temporary custodian.
Valeria – You’re invited any time. The door’s always open.
Char said
Hello everyone! Arriving later than I had planned, but glad to finally be here!
Delphine – so glad you could make it – see, I told you this was fun.
Chris – thanks for remembering to bring the Klondike bars. Tuesday nights wouldn’t be the same with out them (or some form of ice cream)
Scorpia said
Liz, all, I must be going now. Bye all, and sorry I couldn’t stay longer.
At least I didn’t have to make a list

I fear that means I will have to write a list about , er, I mean in your stead.
Do travel safe and well and enjoy the rest of your Tuesday.

I used to call blogs “slow chat rooms”, but this one right now is quite fast.
I have composed a blog post, talked on the phone, done Google Chat, and made penned notes on paper, while reading a book and listening to a music CD, WHILE driving a car and texting a friend as I spoke pleasantries to a passenger in the back seat who kept pestering me for a piece of the pie I was eating.
Or was that just a dream…?
Valeria Maltoni said
Delphine: if you’d like I’ll connect you with Stephanie, she’s one of the finest people I’ve ever met.
Bye Scorpia.
ME Strauss said
Vaspers,
I call Tuesday night comments, part video game, part bar conversation, part live TV.
Roger von Oech said
Hi Liz and SOBs,
Seasons Greetings!
How long do you spend writing and putting together your average post?
Valeria Maltoni said
Hello Vesper: I’ve read with interest your comments on CK’s blog as well. You sound like you live life with gusto.
Rick Cockrum said
It actually sounds like you may have been on your way to work, Vaspars.
Char said
Liz – you are too sweet!
Delphine – I hope Gayla makes it, but I think she is dealing with technology issues and other obstacles right now.
Is Chris still here? I was wondering what kind of Klondike bars were being handed out tonight.
V-+a%S(p#E*rsT=`hE..]gra_Te[ said
Delphine: I was just at your WordPress blog and at your Orble blog. Orble is new to me. It features user ranking of posts, like Digg?
Delphine said
thanks Valeria, that would be great if you introduce us… I will make sure to post to her blog as well.
Valeria Maltoni said
Sorry, Vaspers: I am getting sleepy and dizzy with all those lists. Vesper is actually my favorite time of the day for chants.
V-+a%S(p#E*rsT=`hE..]gra_Te[ said
Yes Rick I was on my way to work, about 12 hours ago.
Valerie: I live life with bitter irony and loads of laughs. Usually.
ME Strauss said
Roger, I spend too long on the Successful Blog posts 2 sometimes 3 hours on the main ones. 30 minutes to an hour on the B.A.D. Blogger posts.
On my other posts of which I do 4 blogs besids this one about 1/2 hour on average.
V-+a%S(p#E*rsT=`hE..]gra_Te[ said
Ah Valeria you know a secret or two about Vaspers now, hey hey hey.
Valeria Maltoni said
Vaspers – I like irony and bitter chocholate. Humor is key. No laughing, sad story.
Delphine said
Vaspars,
Orble is new to me, too, everything is new. I “applied” with them because they advertise $40/week to blog, but everyone I’ve read about is blogging for 50% ad revenue. I’m not sure if it’s like Digg because I’ve never been there, but users do vote on posts they like.
Roger von Oech said
That’s about right for me as well.
You’re in touch with many, many bloggers. What would you say the average is?
V-+a%S(p#E*rsT=`hE..]gra_Te[ said
Dark black bitter chocolate? my favorite, too.
But “Vaspers” is a deconstructionist slurring of “vespers” which indicates I do my best work at night like.
Rick Cockrum said
Now I don’t feel so bad. I spend 1 – 2 hours actually writing, and several hours on prep work, Roger.
Ben Yoskovitz said
Wow – lots of action already…evening everyone!!
Char said
I am also a list kind of a gal. I have lists everywhere – otherwise I remember nothing and get nothing done!
On my desk right now…
1. Project to-do list
2. List of calls I need to make
3. Grocery/shopping list
4. Excel spreadsheet with a list of Christmas ideas/what I have already bought for those on my list
Valeria Maltoni said
Liz: I am grateful to have received the invite. Everyone here is so interesting! One blog is enough for me right now to dust the cobwebs from my day.
Joe said
I’m keeping a list of who is talking to whom, and I’m checking it twice.
Vaspers is funny
and Liz is nice.
ME Strauss said
Roger,
I think it has to do with the kind of post.
Thinking posts like you, Rick and I do — cognitive stuff takes longer to put to gether than straight reporting. That’s what I find with the BAD Blogger posts. They go much more quickly, even though I don’t take many notes.
V-+a%S(p#E*rsT=`hE..]gra_Te[ said
Delphine: I dislike PayPerPost and WOMMA, but this Orble sounds more like Digg, which is a tech blog forum thingamajig, where users rank tech news posts.
Orble pays you to blog? To blog about products? % of ad revenue, of total Orble ad revenue…oh I guess I could just research the site myself.
I like Blogger and WordPress the best. I have a Busy Thumbs, MySpace, Flogger, and Frappr blog, among a few others, long forgotten now…
Valeria Maltoni said
A couple of years ago there was a Top Ten list on FC:Now on the 10 telltale signs that your company is not ‘fast’. Alas I cannot recall who wrote it. One fo the reasons was:

Hi all, happy holidays. I’m afraid I can’t stay because:
1) I’m late getting a new post done for Designers who Blog
2) I’m trying to sort out my email problems with my hosting company and they are online now, working through the problem
3) I have to answer the many emails from those kind enough to answer questions for my ‘Working With series’
ps: if you’d like to join in, send me an email to thecat (at) creativelatitude (dot) com. You’ll get link love back.
4) I have to write blog posts for the next month for DWB because I’m leaving on the 16th of this month for the UK
5) I have to take a shower and get dressed
6) My cats need to be rounded up
7) I have to make a list of everything that needs to be done before I leave on the 16th – such as:
a) what to pack
b) what xmas presents to buy
c) who to send cards to asap
d) what jobs need hard copy for the UK
e) what blogs need babysitters
d) jobs to farm out
f) coding that needs to be tweaked
g) birthday flights to pay for
So, …. HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

I spend from 15 minutes to 1 hour working on a post, usually about 30 minutes. In the dim past, about 3 years ago, I would spend 2 or 3 hours, but I did a lot more hyperlinking and research. I was more scholarly I think when I first started posting.
Char said
The time I spend on my posts varies wildly. Some I can get out in 10-15 minutes and others take an hour or so. I do a lot of the prep work while I am not at my desk.

Vaspars,
you apply with your subject… they set everything up. You post 2 -3 times per week and you get 50% of the clicks on the ads/links. You can post on whatever you want, whatever angle you want, no payperpost type of thing, but you can talk about products YOU like, etc… maybe I’ll see you on there?
Carolyn Manning said
Vasper, Orble will set you up with a domain and split any ad profits. The trouble is that, for the most part the only people who read Orble blogs are other Orble writers. It’s nothing like Digg; the ratings are purely internal.

I’m like most of the others on posting. I spend most of my time doing prep. The actual post doesn’t usually take too long after that. Maybe 15-20 minutes. Then, the final draft (bolding, links, quotes etc) can take longer than the post itself.
Delphine said
Carolyn,
it’s been such a short while, so far it’s what they promised, and they are VERY nice! As far as money wise, I can’t tell because I haven’t gotten that far, but I will be sure to share when I do get a solid opinion one way or the other.

On posting: I’m new and like to do some background research on my posts so usually I work on that on Sunday afternoon to evening for several hours while I plan the week and get ‘drafts’ going. Then I do the final write as I go along to keep the content fresh. Those take anywhere from 20-30 because I write more in essay format.
When I travel I actually schedule posts for when I cannot get to a computer.

Meikah – don’t do it. I have a Razr and I HATE it. I can’t wait for February when I am eligible for a new phone – that thing will be GONE.
Me, I don’t want much – I am spoiled throughout the year. However, I would like a new pair of slippers, a red turtleneck sweater, some Godiva chocolate (my brother is always good for that one), and a wireless mouse for my new laptop.

Ben,
I can definately come up with some concrete goals, I’ll post to your blog soon. thanks for the inspiration and invite.

Meikah – I don’t have a preference on slippers actually. I probably should though.
They can’t be too over the top though (like fluffy pink bunny ones) cause my employees at the office might wonder what’s up. And walking down the hallway to the washroom would be rather funny…on second thought…

Hey Liz, do you mean about the “The “Mock 10″ Signs of Blog Addiction”
Hi back Valeria! I’m finally working though the updates on DWB. I usually have a bunch backdated, but … times are slim on time in the run up to the holidays.
And it doesn’t help to have to work through code snafus when they are not planned.
Like, when are they EVER planned, right?
At the moment I’m trying to add a plugin to the Creative Latitude blog where our members can sign up to have their blog post titles sucked into the CL posts to give them extra promotion.
And since it’s connected to Zoodoka, they’ll also get their posts (the ones about their businesses) sent out in the CL newsletter.
But .. the code … the code … (shudder) it’s a nightmare!

Since the evening started with lists
I want to make a Christmas wish.
All the best to you and your families
Holiday cheer and joy-i-ties
Here is a list of reindeer you know
Merry Christmas Ho-Ho-Ho
You know Dasher and Dancer
And Prancer and Vixen,
Comet and Cupid
And Donner and Blitzen
Only eight there might be
to put under the tree
But wait there’s one more
to even the score
~~ Everyone Sings~~
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Play in any reindeer games
Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say,
“Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
Then all the reindeer loved him
And they shouted out with glee,
“Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
You’ll go down in history!”

Char, Your about page is one of the best, but then so is your blog.
Troy, always feel free to leave a link!
Rodney, Congratulations! What fun is that!!!!
Jeff, So cool you came by to see us. But I’m sorry that you couldn’t hook with Larry for a wild night on the town!!

A list of lists is what you missed
If you weren’t here for last night’s tryst
Bloggers from around the globe
Tipped their hats to those they know
Newfound friends came out to play
As we all had our say
Joe was first as he tries to be
Making lists of what he’d see
Liz the ever gracious host
Watched neighbors list what they loved most.
Scorpia panned the creation of lists
Stultifying shells to block her bliss
John T Unger sat a spell
But Typelists’ called sounded his knell
Carolyn said she loves lists
She may explain to a therapist
Valeria came for the first time
Lists for her, harness the mind
Delphine, too, was also new
Lists for her keep things to do
Trisha stopped just to say hi
To her lists she says goodbye
Chris is in a frigid clime
But with Klondike’s he’s doing fine
Derek came, proud to say
His new blog layout makes him say Yay!
Vaspers returned, with his unique sound
Bearing links and quips, and links round rou….
Char says she’s a lover of lists
For holding her thoughs so life she won’t miss
Roger surveyed the list on their blog writing time
Was he making a list? I gave him mine
Ben stopped in. We gave him pink slippers
And promised him links if he’d just send us pictures
Cat is busy, preparing to fly
To England for Christmas – now she’s lacking time
Shopping lists are popular at this time of year
Meikah really does hope the list of bills disappears
Christine (she’s a P) doesn’t follow her lists
Resolutions are out, but a year’s word can bring bliss
Rodney just joined the BAD blogger club
For Starbucker ice cream supplied the true grist
For a mouth-watering, luscious, flavorful list.
Tony felt bad that he came so late
John R brought books, a list that was great
Troy Worman said hi, Jeff Brown was alone
Douglas winged in and back out on his own
Jessica’s list gave us food, not just a bone
And HART said a last hi from his unique time zone.
As Joe said in his great rendition of Rudolph
And the end of the year comes once more to be
With lists like this
You’ll go down in history!
