The Mic Is On: We’re Misbehaving! Well, Sort of . . .

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

Here’s how it works.

open mike night

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

Tonight we’re misbehaving — well, sort of . . .

We might also talk about

AND THE EVER POPULAR,
Basil the code-writing donkey, and Milton the Skinny Moose.

In college my friends and I decided it would be fun to create a waterslide in our dorm hall. We took down all the shower curtains and lined them up one after another down the whole length of the hall. Then we took buckets of soapy water and poured it down the hall. We would then take a running start and dive onto the slippery shower curtain slide and glide all the way down the hall! :) It was a riot. A very funny memory of some wild days! ;)

Not a funny story - but cool. We lived in New Zealand for a few years. This time of year, the Salvation Army brass brand would walk around the neighborhood and play carols. If you gave them a donation they would play in front of your house. Very early twentieth century. And they played a lot better than me.

Well, I don’t have much to share in the prank department. The best I can do is from a time when I was very young. Not sure if I was even old enough for school (it was that long ago).

I was in someone’s apartment being babysitted. There was a gap between the stove and the wall, and I could just fit in there. So I did ;)

After awhile, people noticed I didn’t seem to be around (there were at least 2 adults there). Frantic searching throughout the apartment ensued. They looked out the window in case I’d somehow fallen out.

I admit I was enjoying myself, and the longer I stayed there, the harder it was to come out.

However, after that, memory fades. I don’t recall if I did come out, or they found me, and what happened after.

It may be inborn with big brothers. I was six years older than my sister. When she was three or four I would play ghost with her, booing and waving my arms until I fell like I was dead. She would poke at me and then run crying to our mom. I thought it was hilarious.

Hi all! I’m here for only 11 minutes, then I’m into Lurk mode while I watch that mini series “The Lost Room” (part 2) ..

It’s with the one from 6-feet under show(the one seeing ghosts) .. it’s not as good as the other one (the gay one) who is Dexter.

Okay. Lessee.. Topic… topic.. // My worse moments, were one Gate Night (nite before Halloween).. there were 4 of us .. that pretty much egged a house, cut hay bales, lamp smashing, and some pictures on peoples window - across the street from one of my friends. The cops came by, and saw that 4 youngsters were alone across from the house that got damaged. But then, miraculously the mother drove up in a minivan and when she heard what the police were asking .. out of the blue she lied and said we were all quiet playing cards in the living room, and she went out driving after we heard some noise. The cops bought that, and when they left .. we brought in her groceries.

We would go out together and for some reason we would always be in that order when some guys would ask our names. We would say
Nancy, Nancy, Maribeth and Mary Beth

Then Mary Beth and I would say together

“But she spells her name wrong.”

She is tall and thin as I am. Then she and I would launch into a story about how we were sisters and our mother just liked the name. That for years we hated each other. That she tried to burn down my bedroom door. She got the chocolate chip cookies from Mom, but I got the $20 from Dad. Now we’re friends and our parents are worried.

Guys would believe the entire thing.

I lived in Queens growing up, I would beg my mother for train fare, food, a new book for school, paper, you name it! I would scavenge some or get it somehow and use the little money to buy clothes.

I would eat NOTHING the whole day, or I would go into mcd’s and get a small fry with LOTS of ketchup w/ a glass of water for 80 cents. Then my friend and I would walk 40+ blocks to shop in these cheapo stores.

I hated lying to my mother but she would never buy me any clothes! I guess I was a “good girl” in school, that’s the worst it got.

    liz,

I’m sorry to hear it sounds like it didn’t go through?

EFL in Japan is often company mandated, so it’s not always a pleasure for the student to take that type of class (this is the worst). Often the company’s insist that we (teachers) stick to a specific program which usually is very formal and boring.

I made most of my money in eikaiwa (conversation schools) where people really want to know the “lingo” and pop culture as well as pronunciation. I also did a lot of private students, this was pre kids & with a husband who was deployed 7 months out of the year, so I didn’t mind going into Tokyo a 40 minute train ride each way, after my lessons I would walk around and sight see. It’s customary to get an hourly wage, which is high, PLUS train fare.

I hope you’ll get the chance at some time…

Okay, here’s one of my favorites. I receive an e-mail announcement of one of those soul-crushing ‘cost saving’ contests. There had been a series of these things, each getting progressively more ridiculous. This one, unfortunately announced on a Friday afternoon, had a laughable set of constraints. The idea had to be applicable across all locations. It had to be applicable across departments. It had to have hard dollar return on investment.

I went into my boss’s office to bitch about it when - IT HIT - the mother of all cost saving contest entries!!! But I couldn’t submit it under my name, or my boss’s. She suggested the name of a colleague, so I filled in the form (complete with company-wide ROI calculation) and dropped it into the company mail.

A few weeks later the colleague and I got promoted to another location. We were busy moving our families and taking on new challenges, and I forgot about the contest.

Six months later we were asked to go back to our old location for a meeting. What luck that they were having an All Hands meeting the day we arrived. [You can see where this is going, right?]

About halfway through the meeting, they call my colleague up to the podium, because he won Honorable Mention in the cost saving contest. He looked completely surprised because - yes - he knew NOTHING about his entry! My old boss shot me an O-My-God glance that told me she hadn’t a clue either, but we both realized what was going on.

The division president offered my colleague the $25 gift certificate and ribbon and asked what his cost saving suggestion was. At this point my boss and I were doubled over with pain and mirth, because we had submitted the suggestion of single ply toilet paper - a straight 50% improvement for a net $20000 per year for the corporation.

Sorry I missed this last night (we had our company holiday party), but here’s my child mischief story ( I revealed the basics on my blog last Saturday): when I was in first grade, me and a couple of buddies developed a fixation on lighting little bonfires in our back alleys (we had paved ones in our hometown). I’d pilfer matches from my house, and during our lunch time we’d gather “kindling” (candy wrappers, etc) and find a nice patch of alley concrete, and light up a nice little fire (maybe six inches wide). This was all going well until one day a neighbor “caught” us - she yelled and scooted us away back to our playground. About 15 minutes later a police car pulled up, and uttered my name. I was horrified - I was 7 years old and going to jail! Fortunately, the officer only scolded me (in front of all my classmates to boot), but it certainly scared me straight. In fact, I’ve probably lit less than 20 matches in the last 40 years! All the best everybody, and see you next week.
