The Mic Is On: We’re Talking about Great Products!! and…

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

The Mic Is On

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

Great Services!!

We’re meeting in Chicago this week to talk about building an online business. We can’t have a business without products and services to sell.

Lot’s of us who can’t be there have great information and links that would be helpful for the folks who are meeting. Bring ‘em and lets share.

We’ll be talking about products we love, services we wish for, ideas for new ones, remembering old ones, and how we found out about all of them. We’ll talk about whatever else comes up, too, even flamenco dancing.

Oh, and bring links to share — about great products and great services.

Glenda, producing a book through Lulu allows you to set your own royalty. Their only fee is when you buy a printed copy….the base fee is something like $4.60 plus 2 cents per page.

Once that “printing cost” is arrived at, the author can add whatever they want to the sale price, and the difference is the authors “royalty” (profit). There are no set-up fees like some POD’s charge, and they don’t require you to purchase a minimum number of books. (Although they strongly suggest you buy a copy to verify that the finished product looks like you thought it would.)

If you need assistance with formatting, editing or cover design, they have several approved third-party vendors who offer their services.

If you want to purchase an ISBN for your book to be able to market it through bookstores, they also offer that.

Sorry, didn’t mean to sound like I’m pimping Lulu - LOL

Glenda, I didn’t try a small press run because I didn’t have the budget. They have set up fees and minimum quantity purchases. I think some authors do have good luck going that route though. How’d you publish your book?

  59. April 29th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
    ME Liz Strauss said

    Hey Trisha!
Photos are beautiful additions to a book. Nothing wrong with them. I think that books are going to have more visuals as more people get used to working online.

Truly don’t mean to hog the conversation here, just one more brief point. Lulu allows you to include black and white photos or graphics at no additional charge. In the mystery book, I included images of Tarot cards.

    Trisha,
Once the book goes color, it’s a one time thing. It pushes the overall price up, but the more pages don’t go up the way individual 8×10 photographs would if you bought them.

I think I’d be hard-pressed to determine what “services” are good or not just because there are so darn many of them. Seems like people are always passing out invites to this or that on Twitter, but how much can one person <i?really keep up with?

  79. April 29th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
    ME Liz Strauss said

Printers can print with one ink in a big “barrel.”

They can use a press that has two barrels and then two colors of ink — say red and black (on white paper)

But full-color is made of dots of four colors that mix together. That requires a press with four barrels for the page to roll over and serious registration alignment to make sure that the dots come together to make the pictures and letters look right.

Trisha, if you want pumpkins for eating, get the small sugar variety (sometimes known as “pie pumpkins”)

The big ones make nice jack-o-lantern but they’re too grainy for good eatin’

    :-)

Starting seeds inside is good as pumpkins take about 90 days to mature. Don’t put them outside until all chance of frost is past. The flowers are beautiful, take pictures!

You’d better check with the hotel. After all, Chicago did have that problem with Mrs. O’Leary’s cow. They could still be nervous about such things. :)

That pix is lovely. I leave home on Thursday and won’t be back until Sunday evening. Just so you know the window when I’m gone. :)
