The Mic Is On: We’re Talking about Great Products!! and…
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
Great Services!!
We’re meeting in Chicago this week to talk about building an online business. We can’t have a business without products and services to sell.
Lot’s of us who can’t be there have great information and links that would be helpful for the folks who are meeting. Bring ‘em and lets share.
We’ll be talking about products we love, services we wish for, ideas for new ones, remembering old ones, and how we found out about all of them. We’ll talk about whatever else comes up, too, even flamenco dancing.
Oh, and bring links to share — about great products and great services.

Hello!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hiya!!
I’ve been seeing pale blue dot show up on my dashboard.
Trisha said
yeah, I’ve been working on that.
Trisha said
It’s kind of a way to think out loud about how to make my women’s site successful.
Trisha said
Seems quiet here tonight.
Marti said
Good evening, Liz and Trisha!
ME Liz Strauss said
It’s a wonderful track of how to build a blog.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hey Liz, are ready for SOBcon?
Trisha said
Maybe everyone is already on their way up there for this weekend!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Glenda!
I’ll never be ready and then it will be over!!
Trisha said
Hello Marti and Glenda!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Marti!
Great to see you hanging around here as a habit again!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Well Liz, at some point, let go, let it happen and enjoy.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Trisha!
I know some folks got in last night. Joanna Young gets in tomorrow. And lots come on Thursday!!
Marti said
Hi Glenda! Hope this finds everyone well this evening. We had our first “nice” spring day today, it was wonderful!
ME Liz Strauss said
Oh Glenda,
No worries. I’m taking on thing at a time and figuring the details will take care of themselves.
Trisha said
Oh no! I forgot and subscribed to this thread! I don’t remember doing it, I guess I did it out of habit.
ME Liz Strauss said
Oh Trisha,
You’re in deadly trouble now!!
Trish said
Depending on the business you’re in you might not have a product or a service that you sell but your business still might be valuable to others.
Marti said
I will be with all of you at SOBCon in spirit. Maybe Liz can set a cardboard cutout of me in a chair - LOL
Trisha said
I was able to unsubscribe!
ME Liz Strauss said
Send the cut-out, Marti!
We’ll put it in a chair for you no problem.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hey Marti, good to see you. We had spring Saturday.
ME Liz Strauss said
Curses! Trisha, I thought I had you in my clutches!!
Marti said
For the topic this evening, I would suggest anyone interested in publishing their own book use Lulu
http://lulu.com
They’re the best publish on demand company out there for ease of use and quality of product.
Trisha said
I escaped!
ME Liz Strauss said
So Glenda,
How do you do your shopping?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Marti, you’ve used lulu? They were on my short list.
Marti said
Glenda, it has been just awful here! Cold and rainy, even snowing!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
my grocery shopping, Liz? Isn’t that what hubby is for?
ME Liz Strauss said
Yeah, Marti,
Ruth Sylte told me they had snow in MN this weekend.
Trisha said
We had hail yesterday
Marti said
Yes Glenda. I investigated ALL of the POD outfits for a Squidoo lens I built about self publishing. Lulu wins hands down.
Liz has copies of the books - she can verify the quality is great! (Of their printed material…we won’t put her on the spot about the quality of the written material - LOL)
Joe said
Hey Liz, Marti, Glenda, Trisha,
Boy, that seems like Girls Night Out!
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda!
Marti’s books are really high quality. No doubt about that.
Marti said
Hi Joe! Wonderful to see you!
Regarding the weather, the meteorologists here are just freaking out - LOL! We’ve broken all sorts of records for cold and precipitation.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Yeah Marti, hasn’t been great here either. I realized we could be in full greenness for only six months. Oh well, nothing we can do about it.
Trish said
Marti - Cardboard cut-outs sounds like a great idea! I want to be there as a cardboard cut-out too. LOL!
@Dayngr
@MailOurMilitary
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Joe!
Hang in there! The guys are always late.
Marti said
Hi Dayngr! That’s a funny visual - a conference room scattered with cardboard cutouts of bloggers
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Marti, there was one tiny detail that bugged me about Lulu. I think it was how much they kept or something. That’s about the only reason I didn’t go with them.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hiya, Trisha!
With the cardboard cutout group, talk Scott Monty into putting up an ooVoo mastermind team to attend.
Trisha said
Oh wow! There’s a Trisha and Trish here!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hey Joe, how are you this evening?
Joe said
Liz,
I just want to know if I should wear my LongJohns this weekend?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Marti, have you found POD the better way to go? Rather than small print run?
Joe said
Glenda, I may have to take master Tim’s place dancing (just to keep warm!)
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
I don’t check the weather regularly.
You’re on your own.
ME Liz Strauss said
Can we talk about something besides the conference. I don’t want folks who aren’t going to be here to feel badly about it.
Joe said
Liz, lick your finger, put it out the window and if it’s COLD, then I should bring Winter Wear!
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
Do your own homework. I live on the 12th floor.
Marti said
Glenda, producing a book through Lulu allows you to set your own royalty. Their only fee is when you buy a printed copy….the base fee is something like $4.60 plus 2 cents per page.
Once that “printing cost” is arrived at, the author can add whatever they want to the sale price, and the difference is the authors “royalty” (profit). There are no set-up fees like some POD’s charge, and they don’t require you to purchase a minimum number of books. (Although they strongly suggest you buy a copy to verify that the finished product looks like you thought it would.)
If you need assistance with formatting, editing or cover design, they have several approved third-party vendors who offer their services.
If you want to purchase an ISBN for your book to be able to market it through bookstores, they also offer that.
Sorry, didn’t mean to sound like I’m pimping Lulu - LOL
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
too late, Liz. I already bummed I won’t be there with all of you. Sniff sniff
Trisha said
Its good stuff to know, if I ever decide to write a book.
ME Liz Strauss said
Marti!
I think that was a brilliant overview. Thanks for that!
Trisha said
the only thing I could write a book about though would require photos.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Thanks Marti, I did REALLY look at them. Maybe next time.
Marti said
Glenda, I didn’t try a small press run because I didn’t have the budget. They have set up fees and minimum quantity purchases. I think some authors do have good luck going that route though. How’d you publish your book?
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Trisha!
Photos are beautiful additions to a book. Nothing wrong with them. I think that books are going to have more visuals as more people get used to working online.
Joe said
So, I guess I shouldn’t ask if you know if Hotel 71 has a shuttle from the airport, huh?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Yeah, thinking back on it, lulu’s printing cost was higher than who I went with. It took much homework!
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
Super Shuttle will take you downtown.
Trisha said
At one time what cafepress offered for books didn’t allow for photos, even color pictures.
Marti said
Truly don’t mean to hog the conversation here, just one more brief point. Lulu allows you to include black and white photos or graphics at no additional charge. In the mystery book, I included images of Tarot cards.
Color printing on the interior pages does cost more though.
Trish said
I thought I’d come and throw a Trish into the mix just to make things crazier!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Trisha and Marti,
That’s because color photos (color anything) needs to run on a different press than one-color black ink does.
Trisha said
It would cost way too much for me to do anything with butterfly gardening - I would need lots of color photos.
Marti said
Trish, Trisha….the more “TR” the merrier. Heck it’s TRiffic! *grin*
Trisha said
@Trisha - are you really a patricia?
Trisha said
I meant @Trish - I wasn’t trying to talk to myself!
ME Liz Strauss said
Trisha,
Once the book goes color, it’s a one time thing. It pushes the overall price up, but the more pages don’t go up the way individual 8×10 photographs would if you bought them.
Marti said
Shoot, I talk to myself all the time - LOL
Joe said
That one color thing is a give me, just think of when you use your printer on your computer. The color ink cost more, to buy let alone use.
I used to be a printer in a former live and people never seemed to understand that little aspect of printing a piece.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey, Trish
We could use some mixing up. What’s going on?!!
Trisha said
That’s interesting - about the color printing.
Marti said
Does anyone else feel overwhelmed sometimes by all the social media? I can’t keep up with much of it anymore, but even when I had more time, I felt overwhelmed.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Marti, I went with a book printer that another author friend recommended. The owner is a registered bindery or something. I’m happy with them. But I thought I’d be on my second or third print run by now.
Marti said
I think I’d be hard-pressed to determine what “services” are good or not just because there are so darn many of them. Seems like people are always passing out invites to this or that on Twitter, but how much can one person <i?really keep up with?
ME Liz Strauss said
Printers can print with one ink in a big “barrel.”
They can use a press that has two barrels and then two colors of ink — say red and black (on white paper)
But full-color is made of dots of four colors that mix together. That requires a press with four barrels for the page to roll over and serious registration alignment to make sure that the dots come together to make the pictures and letters look right.
Trisha said
I’m overwhelmed with it. I joined groups at some of the sites, but I haven’t time to really participate in any of it.
Marti said
That’s interesting, Glenda. Were you pleased with the process and results?
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Trisha,
I think you’d find it easier to pick one the suits you well and see how that goes.
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda,
Selling books is hard work, isn’t it?
Joe said
Trisha, I have found most of those sites don’t offer enough to spend too much time on them.
They are good if you have time on your hands, but if you really need to communicate with someone, the OLD ways seem to work the best.
Marti said
Twitter is my favorite “social media service”. Facebook just gets to be too much with all of the applications.
I am on LinkedIn but I never know what it really does for me - LOL
How many are all of you on?
Trisha said
I signed up for LinkedIn, but it seems such a pain to use. I haven’t figured out what to do with Twitter yet.
Trisha said
I have accounts at a bunch, but I don’t even come close to using all of them, mostly just tried them out.
Trisha said
I don’t have hardly any friends at StumbleUpon - no one likes me there

Hey Anyone else try out Woopra yet?
Looks pretty good, but you can’t set the time to local time. It confuses me!
My stats are already showing tomorrow and I haven’t even gone to bed yet tonight.
David Dalka said
that’s funny, I was at the organic and fancy food show today and saw many amazing products from great entrepreneurs that I’ve never heard of before!!!
The brand new product aisle had some gems, my favorite (among so many great stories) was Dr. Lucy’s Cookies, which Lucy started after not being able to find gluten and allergen free cookies for her son.
ME Liz Strauss said
Yeah, Joe,
I have Woopra. John gave it to Lorelle and I when we were at WordCamp. You can reset the clock, but I can’t remember how.

Mother Earth said

Timothy Johnson said
Hi Mother Earth… did I see that you are going to be at SOBCon this weekend?
Mother Earth said
OK timothy i am intrigued by the heated bra - that and a pair of heated socks and I think i’d be all set
Mother Earth said
yes i am very excited to be attending sobcon this weekend
Trisha said
Marti - I couldn’t find you at Stumble.
I am going to try to grow some pumpkins this year. For eating. When should I start the seeds? I always start them inside under lights.
Marti said
Timothy, this line made me laugh out loud!
Timothy Johnson said
Mother Earth, I take no responsibility for my students’ collective imaginations.
But it sure was a fun class that night.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi MotherEarth!
Too funny, you and Tim!
Marti said
Trisha, if you want pumpkins for eating, get the small sugar variety (sometimes known as “pie pumpkins”)
The big ones make nice jack-o-lantern but they’re too grainy for good eatin’
Starting seeds inside is good as pumpkins take about 90 days to mature. Don’t put them outside until all chance of frost is past. The flowers are beautiful, take pictures!
Mother Earth said
sorry about that cheesestick liz - nothing worse than an awful cheesestick
tim - i think amazing and dfinitely funny things happen in the classroom - i adore teaching
Timothy Johnson said
Mother Earth - we’ll have to chat this weekend about my Creativity for Business class… I tell my students the first night that I won’t knock them out of their comfort zone… I’ll DROP KICK them!
Mother Earth said
i love growing pumpkins, i had excellant luck with sugar pumpkins and as marti said the flowers are so beautiful - taking pics are a must
i like the decorative goard growing too

Glenda Watson Hyatt said
sorry I disappeared for a bit. Mom called and such.
Hey Mr T!
Mother Earth said
I’d love to chat with you and meet you - i bet my collage workshop would be an intriquing layer to your classes
Trisha said
@Marti - I have the seeds already, I ordered about 2 or 3 different kinds. I don’t remember what they are though, but they are for eating.
I could probably start the seeds anytime then, I think last night was the last chance of frost.
Know anything about butternut squash?
ME Liz Strauss said
Tim,
That makes such a joyful picture. You drop-kicking your students. I’m laughing out loud.
Marti said
My fingers are getting tired, I said I had a “unsername”
Duh on me
Mother Earth said
marti - i can type an entire email backwards -spelling backwards and creatively is a gift !
Marti said
Trisha, sorry, I don’t have much experience with squash
ME Liz Strauss said
Marti,
I call that typing!
Trisha said

Who all is coming in on Thursday for SOBCon? I’ll be in around 3pm (still not sure if that’s your time or mine).
We have to hook up at Starbuckers dinner? meetup? drinks?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
@Mr T, better make it something lively before I fall asleep.
@Liz, Ziki gave me a free google sponsored link for Glenda Watson Hyatt, fwiw.
@Suzie, I’ll check out her course. And, no logo submissions yet. Hope some come in. Perhaps that post should be stumbled?

Whoa look at you two tango!
Timothy Johnson said
Joe, sounds like a plan… you can find my cell on my site… give me a call around 12:30-ish. I’m guessing we’ll be checked in by then. I’m going to try to connect with Sorles and Snell a little after 2. I’ve tried calling Phil Gerbyshak a couple of times this week but to no avail. So lunch is yours!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hey Joanna, glad you had a safe trip. Wish I was there to meet you in person.
Joe said
I gotta find out when Ann Michael is flying out, so if we happen to be on the same plane we don’t miss each other.
Timothy Johnson said
Bring her along, Joe!
Joe said
Tim, as long as we go Dutch.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
That’s what I figured, Liz. Guess I should update it, one day, if I remember my username and password. I forget who I am, where.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Joanna!
Are you at the hotel yet or standing in the airport?!
ME Liz Strauss said
Ann Michael is already coming!
She wouldn’t miss you guys for the world!
Joanna Young said
Hi Glenda
Now that I’m here I’m sure I’ll come back… hope I get a chance to meet you soon
Hi Joe, looking forward to meeting you!
And anyone else who’s here who’ll be here at the weekend. Sorry I’m a bit spaced out just now (it’s 3.15am my time according to my clock) to catch up with the thread…
Joanna
Joanna Young said
Liz, I’m already at the hotel. I’ve had something to eat and a little stroll before it went dark. The hotel is great and the area is just… fabulous. Can’t wait to explore some more tomorrow. I love your city!

Joanna, I know Erik Potter will be anxious to meet you in person. I’ll take extra care to make sure he gets there safely
Joe said
@ Suzie f5 has always worked for me!
Suzie Cheel said
thanks Jo, got it
Joanna Young said
Hi Glenda, yes it is.
I was surprisingly nervous about coming considering I’ve travelled a fair bit on my own around Europe, but going to a new country and continent was taking me out of my comfort zone… But as I was flying in I started thinking about all the people I knew in these mysterious places that have just been names on a map up to now, and it suddenly felt a lot more familiar and real.
How are things with you? I see you’re getting going with the new mega-series on accessibility…
Joanna
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
@Suzie, you’re awesome, thank you! images to include for?
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Suzie!
No problems with the blog at this end anymore. Anyone one else having a problem refreshing the screen?
ME Liz Strauss said
Joanna!
It so nice that your first taste of this continent is Chicago in May. It’s not only beautiful, but the people are so friendly and smiling.
Timothy Johnson said
No problems with screen refreshes here, Liz… but I had a bear of a time with the sobcon meme… it absolutely would not copy over to my blog. I had to do the list in chunks and some of the bullets I had to enter and link manually one at a time instead of just copying over. Weirdest thing
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Tim,
That is weird. I have no idea what would cause that. Where were you copying from? the source?
Joanna Young said
Hi Timothy, you do that! I’m looking forward to meeting him (and you). There’s going to be so much chat going on over the next few days!
Joanna
Timothy Johnson said
Just copying from your blog directly (like I’ve done with any other mass group meme… for example, Age of Conversation 2 group).
When I’d hit save, the entire list would disappear.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Joanna, enjoy your time there! From my experience at BlogWorld, I know how thrilling it was to meet Liz, Suzie, Chris etc in person! Get your sleep now, you’ll need to be well rested before the shinding begins.
Joe said
Sorry to leave you all

Timothy Johnson said
See you for lunch on Friday, Joe
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Night Joe, enjoy Chicago!
Timothy Johnson said
I eventually got it by copying little parts of the list at a time… hope none of the SOBCon attendees minded the wordplay fun I had at their expense.
Joanna Young said
Will do Glenda, just a few blogging things I want to do first!
I got through the next round of the writing blog competition that’s going on so I need to go and say something nice to the organiser and The Copywriting Maven, my friendly rival for this round
Then I sleep I’ll promise

I’m starving, time to put the pizza in.
Enjoy Chicago, everyone. Please tweet often for those of us not there in body, but there in spirit.
