The Mic is On: We’re Talking About Social Media …
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
You know - Twitter, StumbleUpon, Digg, Facebook, Ning, Xing, Doostang, and Flickr
We might talk about:
- Which do we use?
- What do we do there?
- How do we choose our friends?
- How do we decide what to share?

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
Oh, and bring links about social media to share!

Hi Tim!
Thanks for the great memories in your SOBCon post!! You’re a social guy and a scholar!
Delaney Kirk said
Hi Liz and Tim,
Thought I would take a short break. I’m putting together powerpoint slides for a workshop in Akron.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Delaney!
How wonderful to see you here! When are you going to break this habit of coming North when it’s cold?
Lani Anglin-Rosales said
Hey everyone, my name is Lani and I’m addicted to Social Networking. (group: hi, Lani)
I have narrowed the 8billion social sites down to Facebook and LinkedIn although LinkedIn is a little less social and a little more professional. Does blogging count as social networking? I believe so, so I will add that to my list. What do y’all think?
Timothy Johnson said
Hi Delaney! A workshop in Akron…? Is that anything like Sleepless in Seattle?
Loved doing the post for you, Liz. I have been looking forward to SOBCon08 since the drive home from Chicago last May.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Lani!
Welcome to Open Comment Nigh!
I think we should decide what’s social media here and now.
I say this blog sure counts . . . why wouldn’t ever other one?
Delaney Kirk said
I know…I moved to Florida to get away from the cold and snow and then keep accepting workshops up North!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Tim,
It’s only some misbehaving code that’s keeping the registration from being up already!!
Joe said
Hey Liz, Tim, Delaney, and Lani,
Social is as social does.
Timothy Johnson said
Hi Lani… Hi Joe
If a blog falls in the forest and everybody is on facebook and nobody hears it, does it still get a ping on technorati?
Delaney Kirk said
I had to google to see what social media was…
Mike Vizdos said
Hi all. It’s been a while since I have been on here and since I am sitting in a hotel tonight I figured I’d drop in. The topic is something I actually *just finished* a new cartoon and blog posting on this evening. Timing is everything, as “they” say.
Joe said
For some reason I join these social networks and don’t seem to have the time to be so social.
ME Liz Strauss said
You bet it does, Tim,
But the Technorati ping means that you lose 30 links of authority — as with any other new link that you get.
Lani Anglin-Rosales said
Discovering networks that are worthwhile to YOU is key. With so many out there, it IS difficult to find time to test them out.
Be willing to break up with a social network if you aren’t seeing any returns.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hi Liz, Mr T, and everyone! Awesome topic. Today’s show with Susan Reynolds and Connie Reece, and one of Chris Brogan’s comments have really got my mind churning on social media right now. I think we are only beginning to see its power.
Delaney Kirk said
Hi Lani, Joe, Mike…
I had to take a minute out to check out your blogs! Left a Klondike bar for each…
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Joe!
We’re about as social as they come.
Joe said
I agree with Lani, I broke up with Facebook a while ago. I gave and gave and got nothing in return.
Delaney Kirk said
I’ve been asked by other professors if I think faculty should be on Facebook. What do you all think?
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Mike Vizdos
How’s that traveling career going? Do you use Social Media to keep connected?
Mike Vizdos said
Oh… forgot to put the link to the comic in…. http://www.implementingscrum.com/blog/2008/01/16/social-networking-and-scrum-is-there-any-connection-in-reality/

Ooooo… Klondike bars! It’s been so long! Mind if I help myself, Liz?
You know, it was funny. Last Tuesday night I was living my dream… I was observing the SWAT team, taking pics of them, hanging with guys in camo carrying big guns… and at one point I found myself wondering how open mic night was going. That’s how much I care about you guys.
Brooke said
Hello all! I LOVE being social although many of the social networkers are BIG bloggers - I am not, so that common thread is severed. But I love to talk with people!
ME Liz Strauss said
Lani,
I think that you’ve hit the nail on the head. People are investing too much time on networks where the return is too small.
Rick Cockrum said
Hi Liz, Tim, Lani, Delaney, Joe, Mike, Glenda.
This, and the blogosphere, is about as social as it gets with me. MyBlogLog and StumbleUpon are the only things I use regularly, and those are for the pictures and to find interesting sites, respectively. I have a listing on LinkedIn, but haven’t looked at it in ages.
Mike Vizdos said
Hey Liz… what do you mean regarding comment #15 (with Technorati)?
Joe said
Hey Mike, that link didn;t seem to work
Lani Anglin-Rosales said
Joe- that’s a great point. I have found great success with Facebook but I hear others haven’t (I’m in real estate).
Delaney- I get very turned off when my childrens’ teachers are on Facebook or MySpace because it’s not a silly profession and many social sites lend to the silly side of people.
On the other hand, for college professionals, it lends a youthful, connectable credibility that cannot be achieved otherwise (unless you speak hip-hop).
SunnySchlenger said
Yo, Liz, and everyone.
Timothy Johnson said
I do use LinkedIn on a regular basis, but I merely have a presence on Facebook. To answer Delaney’s question, I think it can help a professor to have a Facebook page as long as they use it wisely. I think students have a certain level of respect for a professor who is making an effort to connect with them.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hey Rick!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Joe,
I’m disillusioned about Facebook as well. I don’t need anymore “compare me” applications.
Char said
Hey everyone! My favorite social sites are Facebook (although I don’t use it to its potential), LinkedIn and Stumble Upon. I haven’t started Twittering yet.
Joe said
Hey Rick, Brooke and Glenda and anyone else who came in while I was typing this.
Delaney Kirk said
Thanks Lani and Tim for the feedback. I’m not sure I want to be that hip! (Am I showing my age with the word hip?)
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Brooke!
I find that the BIG bloggers talk to me anyway. . . . when I have something interesting to observe and let them know. I figure the reason that they’re there is to be part of the action.
Timothy Johnson said
Don’t tell Connie Reece, but I have no plans to Twitter. I just don’t have the bandwidth.
BTW, what’s the value proposition for Doostang?
(Hi Glenda… saving a dance for you later… wink, wink)
ME Liz Strauss said
Tim,
Feel free to pass Klondikes all around. You never have to ask!!
Lani Anglin-Rosales said
Timothy- great point.
All- Facebook can be invaluable for three reasons:
(1) to reconnect with people of the past. This is easier for me (in my 20s) than my parents (not in their 20s) because of the demographics.
(2) I spend a great deal of time on Groups. I have “officer” positions of several and my involvement in that has been a great networking opportunity as I gain a credible voice in the field. I am almost always the first to respond to links, wall posts, etc. and people rely on the conversation to be kept going (which is where I often come in).
(3) Facebook is a non-threatening approach. Disarming consumers and peers is crucial, especially with the more shy or reserved types. It’s easier to connect for me on Facebook than it is on blogging because it can be private (via Facebook email) or public (via Wall or group interaction).
Does anyone else find Facebook to be helpful?
Rick Cockrum said
Hi Glenda!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Rick!
I like to use those two to find articles as well. Sometimes I find SOBs in the bunch, too.
Rick Cockrum said
It’s too cold for Klondike’s tonight. A nice cup of Chai tea for me.
Char said
Mike V - Something I saw connected to you recently said you are based in VA. Am I right?
Mike Vizdos said
Hi Liz (re post#22):
I keep connected with a lot of people while traveling. Also, since I am all over the world (literally) it is great to actually meet people that sometimes I have only connected with online via different social networking sites. The link I gave about seems to work but you may just want to go to the home page of http://www.implementingscrum.com and click on the latest cartoon on the homepage to see what services I use and why I use them.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Mike,
Great article! Where do you find time to do it all?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
At the moment, I’m prefering twitter over facebook - more social and no dufus aps to distract me even more.
SunnySchlenger said
Liz — I’m interested in #15 as well. I don’t understand what you mean.
ME Liz Strauss said
Yo Sunny!
Have you gone social yet?
ME Liz Strauss said
Here’s your tea, Rick!
Hi Char,
I think I’m liking Twitter best of all. Now that I understand why folks are there.
SunnySchlenger said
I read alot about the social networks but I spend my time primarily with blogs.
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda,
As I said earlier . . . those dufus apps make me crazy.
Joe said
Glenda, the only problem I have with Twitter so far is I seem to get only 1/2 the conversation (unless I am following both Twitterers)
Char said
Rick - that Chai sounds really good right now. Care to share?
Liz - why should I use Twitter? How is it going to help my business?
Joe said
And they should make it easier to reply to individuals instead of @whoever having to be typed out
Rick Cockrum said
Beautiful cartoon, Mike. An 80 year old in a 20 year old’s body.
Timothy Johnson said
RE #15, I think Liz was responding to my silliness in #11.
That and the fact that Technorati has had enough silliness of its own.
Mike Vizdos said
Re #47…. Part of any blogging (as you know Liz and others with really big / successful blogs here) consistency is the key. Just like when I wrote my book, I learned that people come to expect something out of you on whatever regular basis you publish. I do not personally waste a lot of time watching TV (a time killer for a lot of people). But then again I am kinda geeky lol.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
I would love to find someone to work with me open smush all these tools together they’re running smoothly and effectively for what I need and want to do.
Rick Cockrum said
Thank you for the tea, Liz.
I’d be happy to share, Char. My sister-in- law got me hooked on it last year.
Mike Vizdos said
Hi Char, re: #45… Yep. I am based in Richmond, VA these days. Where are you?
Char said
About an hour north of you…
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Lani,
You do a great explanation of Facebook . . . and besides the dufus apps those are some of the reasons I find it doesn’t do much for me.
After living on this blog, I find that I talk to the people I want to talk with. The walls frustrate me.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Very true, Joe. I find that mildly annoying too. Perhaps the twitter-gurus have some suggestions.
Rick Cockrum said
Liz - You say you understand why people are on Twitter. I’m not. From what I’ve seen in people’s sidebar widgets I haven’t been able to understand it’s value. So, why are people there?
Timothy Johnson said
RE Facebook, I’ve never been good at throwing sheep… I have tossed a dwarf but that’s a long story involving a golf cart and a snow bank that I’d rather not go into online.
ME Liz Strauss said
Char,
I’ve gotten to know people with a comment and a reply. Over a day or two we have a conversation. I met one of them last night. I didn’t know he lived 8 blocks from me.
We met with his wife at a place nearby. Twittered them when I arrived.
ME Liz Strauss said
Timothy,
It’s even worse when folks start throwing politicians at you! Facebook is getting to feel like jr. high.
Char said
So do you Twitter from your cell phone? I’m still so confused.
Mike Vizdos said
RE #57: The site uses characters of a “chicken” and “pig” which is pretty specific to a story used in the software development stuff I write about. The “full” story on the comic strip can be seen here:
http://www.implementingscrum.com/blog/2006/09/11/the-classic-story-of-the-pig-and-chicken/
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Char!
I twitter from my desktop when I’m home and twitter from my cell when I’m out.
It’s something fun to do when you’re waiting in a restaurant for a friend to arrive. And it makes you look like you’re busy.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Rick, have you seen my post on twitter? That’s partly why I twitter.
Timothy Johnson said
Speaking of politicians, I did a series of posts prior to the caucuses… the only really irate comment I received was regarding my post on the least known candidate, and the commenter completely missed the point of the post.

ME Liz Strauss said
#59
I agree, Mike. Consistency is as important as quality.
Rick Cockrum said
I didn’t see the post, Glenda. What’s the url?
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Tim,
I don’t think nonpolitical bloggers want to go near the stuff online . . . even though you were talking about something else there. Seems like the problem of scanning is also involved.
Brooke said
Re # 66 — I think twitter replaces water cooler talk esp when you work at home.
ME Liz Strauss said
Speaking of scanning, I’ve noticed more scanning going on lately. People respond to posts without really reading them. . . . Is it that we’re too busy?
that we’re getting used to an even shorter attention span>
that we’re not as involved?
Timothy Johnson said
The series really helped my traffic. That’s another point about blogging and social media… not only is it social, it’s also MEDIA… as I found out from that post.
Char said
I think we are all trying to absorb too much information too quickly - and therefore we only seem to have time to scan.
Brooke said
Good pointt Liz! I have also noted that I can list out 3 bullet point in emails (all have questions) and only one will get answered or even commented on.
Mike Vizdos said
Liz — “Scanning” ? I need to come here more often to keep up with the terms lol.

ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Joe!
I’m sure it will bring a few onlookers, probably not who you asked . . . they might not be following each other.
Delaney Kirk said
Hi Angela.
Rick Cockrum said
I’m not terribly social. Or maybe I should say I’m socially terrible.
That could be why I haven’t become involved in the social networking thing too much. Especially since I wouldn’t know how to do water cooler talking if you gave me lessons.
Re Liz’s point about increased scanning, and Tim’s point about social MEDIA, communication, maybe we are stretching ourselves too thin through the proliferation of communication networks, and not giving ourselves time to participate in the ones we have.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
re #78 I agree, Brooke. I don’t feel like I’m working in a vacuum any more.
Mike Vizdos said
Hi Angela.
I am one of those “silent guys” who gets to pop in here only once in a while to learn more from you all and see what’s happening in this world. It is a cool community and I always meet someone new and always learn something I can apply at some point. (Thank you all).
ME Liz Strauss said
#78 Brooke,
Some folks think that’s all it is, but I’m finding Twitter is so much more!
Char said
Lani - I recognize that tower - I saw it every day my freshman year of college!

Miss Ohio!
Ann I can’t wait to see your costume!
Mike Vizdos said
So I have not yet become a twitter user…. but it sounds like it is moving up my list of places to join. O joy.
Lani Anglin-Rosales said
Brooke- thank you for your words- you’ve made my day!
Rick- I’ve found that my willingness to dump a social network (like when I was dating and a guy would get too mushy or too dominant, I’d drop ‘em in a heartbeat) makes for a smoother networking experience. Don’t feel obligated to stick with a social network just because you have a username.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Rick, I think the key/trick is to choose a couple networks and actively participate rather than doing too many. For now, I blog and twitter, and facebook somewhat.
Angela Maiers said
Hey Liz! Mike nice to meet you-I am checking out your blogs now!
Delaney Kirk said
Angela,
I was on your blog today. Lots of good info. Mike Sansone’s blog pointed me your way. Is your list just K-12 educators?
Timothy Johnson said
Hi Angela… good to see you here again.
All, it’s important to remember that most of us in this “sub-culture” are light years ahead of a lot of our peers. Two years ago, I would have never seen myself sitting here participating in a webchat on a blog while listening to my iPod.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Lani!
Dustin’s post is a staple.
He’s invited me to do his interview show on BlogTalkRadio — a whole ‘nother social interaction media!
Brooke said
#98 - it is a great way to waste time - buut you do meet peeople and get to know them better - I also pick up some valuable info - but ffor me - at this time - it’s just fun!
Lani Anglin-Rosales said
How do you guys choose your friends on social networks?
ME Liz Strauss said
Tim,
Jason’s book on LinkedIn is excellent. Yeah, I’ve read it. He gave it to me in October. Found out a few things that I hadn’t made up yet.
Mike Vizdos said
Angela, thanks for taking a look. Feedback is always welcome!
Joe said
Brooke, it seems your KEYS are Stickkkkkkiiiinnnnnggggggg again.
ME Liz Strauss said
Brooke,
Good point. Sometimes Twitter is good for observing what a whole group is talking about.
Take for example the misbehavior of Gizmodo at CES.
Brooke said
#109 - I choose my friends mostly from people that I met here or know someone who has been to OMN! I trust them.
Timothy Johnson said
Lani - on LinkedIn, I would recommend a lot more selectivity (i.e., only those you know really well or want to know well). You can be a little more relaxed on Facebook, but I still recommend caution. I was invited to be friends with someone on Facebook and accepted because she claimed to be friends with Tony D Clark. She turned out to be a bit of a flake who kept inviting me to every social cause imaginable so I severed the relationship.
Just use common sense.
AnnOhio said
Giggling at Timothy Johnson I realized today that I have been on Twitter close to a year and the amazing impact it has had on my life. Who would have thought? I had no idea what the term social networking meant back then
ME Liz Strauss said
Lani,
I love that Don’t feel obligated to stick . . . great advice there.
Angela Maiers said
Thanks Delaney! The F-list is for ALL educators. If you know any great professor blogs-I would love you to add them to it. I am posting a copy and paste on the blog tomorrow so you can add your to the list lickety split! (Tim are you listening???) Seriously, when you get a second add a few names.
Brooke said
Joe - thpppbbbtt! (raspberry)
Now that I think more about it I goot started on Twitter because a vendor was on and it was a great way tto communicate.

Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Great definition, Liz. With social networking, I can actually network and socialize - it levels the playing field for me.
AnnOhio said
Angela the relationships on Twitter have expanded out into other social networking tools. It’s like having 300 web resources at your fingertips. On Monday I was looking for a solution for a problem at work. I put a tweet out on twitter within 5 minutes 5 people had sent me direct messages with solutions.
It’s a very powerful tool to connect–but you have to be real. Everyone seems to have a BS detector for the people who aren’t genuine.
Connie Reece said

Susan, it was nice hearing your and Connie’s voices, makes the connection more real. And to hear Tris, Jim and Chris again.

Hi Connie, looks like New York is going to be something. Drew and Mike are great friends! I jealous-I would love to meet David Armano. It is great to learn from the greats!

Liz, shorter the better for a Twitter group name - counts against your 140 characters, ya know.
Susan Reynolds said
Rick - oh gee I miss getting to these Tuesday events - I miss *seeing* you folks so much.
Char - our DC group was set up as a result of passing around a sign up sheet at a great event where people drove way out to the burbs to have dinner with me while I convalesce - and it was so nice to meet them in person - put names to faces.
But at the same time, local groups would sift people out and for me I want to converse with the widest group possible - like Glenda & Ann I might not get to check in with every few daya in any other way than twitter.
AnnOhio said
Well heck tim, if you are that close we need to have a face-to-face open mic!

@ Becky #165 that’s one reason I wrote a post on not forgetting about e-mail subscribers a little while back.

Rick, on my business site, right under my email subscription box, I added links to two different RSS explanations. I used those same explanations in my talk tonight, too.

Well if Connie Reece says come on over to Liz’s and talk about social media, then I come on over to Liz’s to talk about social media…
Kind of odd to use a comments thread for this tho… seems like it’s more of a logged chatroom type situation.
But I’m going to break the rules right away and go read the comment thread from the top!
Timothy Johnson said
Would love to meet you in person, Ann. I’ll be speaking to the local PMI chapter that night.

Hey there, Connie (my new colleague as I go to work doing some consulting work with her company….)
Hi Becky, am very much interested in talking to groups about social media, just as you’ve done. We must mind-meld when you come to SXSWi - do you have a place to stay yet?

Glenda, it was so good seeing your screen name in the chat room today while Susan and I were on the air.
Angela, I’m really looking forward to New York. David Armano is a great guy - he was actually in Austin a few months ago when he was meeting with Dell, and I got to have dinner with him and some of the Dell folks. We had a great time.

Hello everyone. Robert from Alpharetta, GA here. I use LinkedIn, Twitter, Several community sites, Facebook, Myspace, and I have a blog.

And we can Twit the Twits that can’t make the conference.

Todd Jordan said
@conniereece nope, my spike is missing.
@susanreynolds good to find you here as well.
Hey, so I’m hoping to get into SOBCon this year. Be my first one for this sort of thing. I’m more an old had at scifi type cons.

Then you answer with something like “Your username isn’t one I recognize.” They try to bluff once or twice then disappear.
Timothy Johnson said
But Glenda… you promised you’d dance with me for real at SOBCon08… you JUST GOTTA come.

We’ll cry in our beer together Glenda if we can’t go - it’d be great to do all the things out there.
In fact who knows of a comprehensive list of the major events of the bloggy-techie world? I should at least put them on a calendar just in case someone wants to for example plan a WEDDING without consulting their own mother (OK I’m done with that subject I kinda promise)

I can say g’day from here but it’s good evening for most, I guess. So Liz, finally I get here.
A point on LinkedIn. In many ways it has been participating in LinkedIn-related groups, especially some of the Yahoo groups, rather than LinkedIn itself, that has extended my network in meaningful and indeed financially profitable ways.
I’m also finding Twitter interesting. Yes, I spend some time there when I should be doing other things, but I do get benefit. I get the gist of stories like the Gizmodo drama without having to scour the blogosphere. I get clues about interesting new products. I get to connect with people I like and admire, on a daily basis and less formally than via blog comments.
To make it manageable, I scan what’s there from time to time rather that trying to read every tweet. I tend to follow most who follow me, but check every one and if it’s just a spammer, or if there is no clear evidence that it is a human rather than a bot, I don’t follow. And I can always un-follow with a mouseclick.

Cathryn Hrudicka said
Hi, Liz, and everyone else I know here—I’m registered on a lot of social media & networking sites, but I find the ones I use the most every day are Twitter and Facebook. I think it’s because that’s where the largest number of my friends hang out and converse with each other about topics that are most relevant to me.
To create more of a community around my business, share ideas and thinking with people and do some market research, I just started a Ning group on Creativity and Innovation:
http://creativesagecircle.ning.com/ . We’re adding more members.
I find the Ning groups offer more customization and useful features than Facebook groups, and Ning lets you add RSS feeds in and out of your group, so you can run your blog and Twitter feeds to the group, for example.
Next, I’m thinking about doing podcasts and short video clips, along with customizing my blogs and writing one or more books, so that people can learn about or communicate with me in different ways, not just in text. I’m excited by the potential for new developments in collaboration and community-building tools online that integrate with other socnets.

And I remember when I first met Des. Probably about 2002 and we were doing linked-in bloggers, trying to promote each others’ blogs. Always so nice to work with Des on anything. Good memories, and I’m getting emotional

#275: Hi. I do not work for Rally. The training I do (yes, I get paid for doing this) is not my main income stream. As an independent, I work with clients around the world who are having problems implementing scrum and thus the comic strips and the site (www.implementingscrum.com). I have fun with that site and it gets over a million hits per month on a regular basis these days. The FeedBurner numbers are growing steadily.

Thanks for the welcomes! A few thoughts from reading through. Yes, 3rd party apps to follow Twitter - I use Twitbin, not as classy as some but seems to provide more info in the space. Ning is great, esp if you want to set up your own group. Also if you want to create a forum, public or private, Tangler.com have just launched their forum product where you can chat in realtime, post vids etc.
I do use Facebook, don’t do the vampire and sheep-throwing etc, but there are people and groups I want to connect with and they like Facebook, so for me it’s like going to a bar which isn’t your personal fave but where your friends are going to be.
And Liz, thanks for the invite to be a gb - will email you and have told Suzie who seems to like the idea.

Cathryn Hrudicka said
Someone asked about Flickr as a social networking site, if you don’t identify as “a photographer.” I find that Flickr photos really add a dimension to getting to know my friends and business colleagues in other socnets because I can see their family photos on Flickr, or pictures of where they live or work, what conferences they’ve attended, and it gives me some added dimensions about who they are. I love looking at their Flickr pictures! Flickr is really a photo blog, with groups. It’s especially useful to cross-reference, in conjunction with Twitter, Facebook, or other social networking sites.
ME Liz Strauss said
Cathryn,
You’ve got this social stuff down.
Sheila Scarborough said
Oh, oh, it’s that time….
Do I sign off and load/run the dishwasher, or do I sign off, blow off all housekeeping and go to bed?
Amie Gillingham said
@Cathryn: I totally agree re: social usefullness of flickr for non-pro photogs; I love the optional functionality of being updated by email when friends post new stuff because it gives me another way to “see” what’s going on in people’s lives that I might not talk to day to day.
Liz Williams said
Hi All - I’m just joining and guilty of scanning some of the comments so far. I’m new to blogging too, and on Linked In, Facebook and Plaxo because biz contacts and friend have invited me. I’m completely at sea about how to use any of them though. Just getting up to speed re: blogging is rather time-consuming.

Ok… looks like I do not want to be the last person to close down tonight. I have an early day tomorrow so I will go. Thanks for all the great conversation this evening and I hope I can make it back here more often in the future!

But oh 2 sick kids are no fun - I guess hard to avoid though. Just don’t get it yourself!

Hi Liz -
I am diving in to this social media stuff because I’m working on a social networking concept myself. So far, I have the most fun on twitter. I have a facebook account but have not gone back frequently…just don’t think the UI works for me.
I find I sometimes go to LinkedIn too, but not as much I have in the past.
I like blogging which I think is a form of social media. I like SU the most with regards to social bookmarking but recently the traffic patterns aren’t making sense on SU. Posts that are reviewed aren’t resulting in as many views as before.
My time is limited so I find myself spending time using the social media platforms that feel like a good fit for me and my business.
Once we get this mobile app release up and press release out then I might go back and spend more time in some of the sites I haven’t visited in a while.

I can see I’ll have to drift back here next time! Thanks for the hospitality to a first timer Liz!

Great to see you!
Yeah yndygo, I thought you’d pick up on the difference,

Hi Glenda, Susan, Todd, Annie, Connie, and I’m sure I saw comments by many other folks I know (or have heard of) here—this is a great cafe to stop by and meet new people, plus share what we’re all eating!
Sometimes I’ve wondered about weeding out my socnets, like my old Ryze and Ecademy or MySpace profiles, but every once in a while, someone does contact me from the less-used ones. I think a tool where you could update all your socnet profiles at once would be very useful, especially for the more work-oriented ones, like LinkedIn, Ryze, etc. These sites would have to agree on no. of characters and a format, though. Personally, I prefer a more open format, which works better if you have your own business and don’t want to list jobs you had fifteen years ago. I think the spaces where you list jobs, years and colleges ought to be a bit more flexible. I’m mostly just interested in promoting my business and current career now. Just another two cents…

Cathryn, Glenda, I’m on the left coast too. I guess it’s time for the pacific zone wave now.
Thanks for the welcome, Liz - and for your vivacity throughout all the time zones.
I have a socnet question on my mind lately: When do you decide to just pick up the phone? I’m asking because I sometimes find myself in these endless email loops to schedule a phone call or a lunchdate and think, “this is more efficient?” Or, I find myself buried online and wonder if I’m getting what I’d hoped to get from the time I’m spending.
On the other hand, I love that I get connections I can’t get any other way…
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Liz!
I do whatever is most effective for what I want to get done.
Though, I save a phone usually for a “surprise” or an appt.
yndygo said
Liz: I think the rule of thumb about bailing on Socnet communication and just ‘picking up the phone’ is when you find that a 5 minute phone call has turned into more than that on SocNets…
Altho, bearing in mind it depends on the person - as some people can be online while they couldn’t be on the phone (due to whatever they are also doing at the time.)
Just my 2 cents

Another thing,
Our computers outsmart us.
Last night I dropped a Twitter web app on my phone because no matter what I tried it kept respelling twitter as twitted.

The big problem with social media as I see it is that there’s so much out there that one can get lost and spend valuable time in places that don’t make sense…esp from a business perspective. It’s an interesting sea to wade through.
Good night!

Hey Todd Jordan!

But everyone contributes and shares with each other
And matured into SOBCon, and yes there’s another
I hope you can make it to this conference
If not, we shall Twitter with great confidence
And share our experiences and fun that we have

I so agree. It used to be that folks were declaring “feed bankruptcy.” Maybe it’s time to declare social networking “austerity.” [big grin]

I’m finding it a delight to set up times to call or Skype my socnet friends with whom I’ve especially developed a bond, or if the time is right to suggest that we might work together on something. I’ve also hosted a number of “TweetUps” in the Bay Area for visiting Twitter/Facebook friends (other socnet friends are welcome, too). It really enriches my online relationships, once we’ve connected either by phone or in person.
It took a few months before I started making phone appts. with people I met on socnets, though, unless I knew them offline. It varies by individual whether I call someone spontaneously. Usually, unless I want it to be a surprise (like a birthday call), I tweet them or send them an email before calling, in case they’re busy with work. If I just have a quick question, I tweet and ask if I can call them for a few minutes.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Krista!
Welcome! Thanks for coming over!
I so love your url.

Skype and phone calls are a wonderful follow up to the relationships we create via social networking.

Liz and yndygo - makes sense. Is the 5-minute rule for switching to a phone call related the 5-second rule for being able to eat something you’ve dropped?
Speaking of macs, we’ve got mac expo going on in SF. Char, have you seen the macbook air?
Also, Liz, I’m so glad to hear about your losing the twitted battle to your phone. I thought it was just me who did that stuff.
ME Liz Strauss said
Cathryn,
My computer and the internet have become like a pencil or my cell phone. I reach for the one that works. Sometimes in the middle of an IM, we switch to a voice call — because it will be a faster transfer of information.
ME Liz Strauss said
Char, I’m with you on that.
And as we found out in August . . . sometimes nothing can replace an inperson meeting.

Yes, Liz - that was the best! The coolest part was that by the time we met, we had already established such a relationship that it was like we already had met.
ME Liz Strauss said
Good night, Glenda. Thanks for coming. Tell that man that I pine for him every Tuesday night.
Cathryn Hrudicka said
Liz, that makes total sense. As I’m getting to know different socnet friends better, that’s becoming the way we decide to use IM, phone or other msgs. It mainly depends on how immediate your need for info or connection is. For instance, with some media people I know well, I no longer send them press releases, unless they ask. I’ll just send them a short, to-the-point pitch note with a link to a press release, or call them, if they don’t mind being called spontaneously.:-)
ME Liz Strauss said
Todd,
You are a friend and SOB of the very best kind. Thank you for using your time to help.

I need to duck out, unfortunately. But I will check back tomorrow to see all of the great conversation I missed. A huge part of my job is actually getting disinterested customers to try out social networking because it’s good for them, so hearing lots of perspectives on the subject is always a good thing.
Night, all!

Liz - I think our silly-synch is working well! Fun to play with you. You’ll be brilliant on Sirius tomorrow.
It’s tough to tear myself away from all this amazing knowledge - my brain feels stuffed from all I’ve learned tonight. Much to explore.
But, first, I think it’s time to pack for my trip to NYC tomorrow. It’s so cold there I must stuff many, many garments in my suitcase. This will take time, especially as many of them still need to be washed.
I’m grateful to everyone who showed up and typed. Wow. Thank you, Liz - these events rock. I’ll most certainly be back.
