The Mic is On: We’re Talking About Twitter Apps
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
Let Me Call You, TweetHeart
Twitter. Everyone is tweeting — well, almost everyone. Now we have our twitter accessorires. Over 200 applications have been added to the Twitterfield.
- How do you use Twitter?
- Which apps are your favorites?
- What’dya wish for?
- What happens if Twitter starts charging?
And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
Oh, and bring example links to share —

Good evening! I LOVE Twitter! Don’t know much about the apps but I’m here anyway - LOL!
Joe said
HeyLiz,
Don’t have any Twitter apps to share. I barely use Twitter on the web anymore.
Marti said
Hi Liz, hi Joe. Wonderful to see y’all this evening.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Marti! Hi Joe!
Welcome and let’s get this conversation going!
Mimi said
Hello Liz and everyone else! I’m new to this, but looking forward to it.
Joe said
I heard Twitter was down again today. I thought they got that fixed.
Marti said
Dear Father, Forgive me, for it has been six weeks since my last confes…errr…blog post. I am (sniffle) using Twitter instead…
Mimi said
While twitter was down, I actually freaked out a little. I’m still a newbie, but I RELY on it daily now.
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
Twitters’ been doing great and I’ve been looking for you.
Marti said
I don’t know, Joe (oh I rhymed - LOL) I have been gone and wasn’t on Twitter today.
Trisha said
Hello everyone!
I use twirl - does that count?
ME Liz Strauss said
What made you leave, Joe?
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Trisha,
Of course it counts.
Twhirl works like a breeze.
Joe said
Liz, I lurk sometimes and haven’t really been participating. Not on Plurk either, got -0- Karma there.
At least Twitter doesn’t subtract from your profile if you don’t show up for a while.
Christa said
I use Digsby sometimes, but often end up on the web. Never did get used to Tweetdeck plus I didn’t like the API time-outs. Haven’t tried Twirl and I’m not sure what the advantage would be, though I’m open to enlightenment!
I miss People Search - that was how I found most of my original victims, I mean, followees…
If they charge? Depends on how much.
Marti said
I always just read and post at Twitter from the web. I’m not familiar with any of the apps. My hard drive is almost full, so I don’t have room to download anything, and I don’t have unlimited text, so I don’t use it on my phone.
ME Liz Strauss said
Yeah, Joe,
I quit Plurk for that reason too.
Joe said
Way to go Marti
You’re such a smarty!

Liz, if my comments are “awaiting moderation” does that mean you have to approve them?

Good evening! TweetDeck is the only twizmo I use. Works great.

Howdy, y’all! A big tip o’ the topper to you Liz, Marti, Joe, Christa, Trisha, and of course my buddy Brad!
I’ve used Twhirl since I signed up for Twitter at SOBCon08. Love it!

Welcome!
Thanks for letting me know that.

Yes, I love Twitter. It’s a great way to “meet” people.

Hi there Robert, Marti. Twitter is growing on me. It’s taking me a while to figure it out.

I really appreciate the relevant links that people post to Twitter. Many times I’m able to blogpost on some of these.

Good evening, all! This is my first time on open mic.
I use Twitterific for Mac the most of all. Sometimes use TweetDeck for searching, which Twitterific doesn’t have. I’ve tried several other clients, but keep coming back to Twitterific for its simplicity.

My little guy is tucked in, so I’m jumping in for a bit… hi, y’all!
I don’t have a specific Twitter app to share (still not all that committed a user, feel like I need to stay dark during the work day, for one thing), but I did put together a newbie FAQ (partially as a way of figuring things out for myself) a while back:

Anyway, I’m on Twitter (http://twitter.com/pelf81/) and have recently changed the way I use it. I used to just announce my new blog posts on Twitter, but that wasn’t very fun so I am now tweeting snippets of news on turtles and conservation

Has anyone been taking care of SOBCon on Twitter?
I haven’t checked it in longer than I haven’t checked mcbsconsulting.

I’ve added Robert, Brad and pelf. Trying to hunt down the rest of you. Joe, who are you at Twitter?
Delaney Kirk said
Hi Karen,
What’s your take on the Motrin ad?
pelf said
I’m now experimenting with both Tweetdeck and Twhirl, and now I understand why nobody says which is better.
Tweetdeck is simple but doesn’t have this “limit” thing.
Twhirl is more sophisticated, but has this “limit” thing that pauses Twitter for 5 minutes from time to time.
Marti said
I only learned of the Motrin debate after it was over. I looked at the ad and did think it was a bit tasteless. It’s not nice to aggravate moms who carry their babies!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
HI Everyone! I’m a boring twithead. I tweet from the web. Haven’t played with many aps.

so what is this motrin thing everyone’s been talking about? Can someone summarize?
Rodney Rumford said
i finally made it. actually early for me to join in. lets see. twitter apps… I have tested about close to 200 of these things. some worthless, some reliable, some time killers and some useful ones
favorite tool without a doubt is tweetdeck
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey, What about Twitter!
Amy Derby said
Pelf,
Tweetdeck has a limit too (it puts me in the corner frequently).
I used thwirl but gave it up because it doesn’t catch all the @ replies.
Brad Shorr said
Hi there Marti … Love your blog.

@Delaney You’re welcome!

Tweetdeck would be great if someone could tell me how to close groups and save them for later.

I learned of it through Liz’s blogpost on it. It’s going to make a great case to discuss in my class on Saturday. Try googling motrin mom.
Joe said
Marti, mcbsconsulting.
Ok,if you want the link http://twitter.com/mcbsconsulting
Amy Derby said
Liz, it erases them once you close them. Found this out the hard way. No way to save… that I know of.
Rodney Rumford said
liz,
with tweetdeck you can save the groups, but you cant turn them on and off. nice idea for a feature tho. submit it to their feedback form. the developer is amazing guys and he listens and improves the product.
ME Liz Strauss said
I know, Amy.
I’ve made some practice groups and tried it. A couple of times I’ve closed huge groups by accident.

I like TweekDeck. It has cool customization options (ie color schema, layout, etc). Though, I have to agree with Christina regarding the API timeouts. But it’s much better than Twirl. Can’t get used to the interface.

Shelley - I can tell you a little bit now. I have one of the ASUS ones sitting here back in its box after having it for 1 hour. The touchpad wouldn’t work on it at all, and the keyboard didn’t work too well either. Couldn’t even set the thing up since I couldn’t move the cursor. I’m sending it back for a refund, after that experience I didn’t want to bother with replacing it.

I just ordered an Acer Aspire One - the reviews for it sound a little better. If you really want to avoid linux, they sell some with XP also, but they cost more. I want it for travel - its small and lightweight - and durable. The ones with the solid state drives - rather than spinning hard drives are more durable anyway.
Marti said
Brad, bless your heart for reading my blog!
Twitter seems to have been in the forefront of the Motrin War, which as I understand it, was a revolt about a Motrin ad showing a 20 something woman saying that “baby carrying” (using a sling or other hold-your-infant-close-to-you device) could cause neck strain and backache and how Motrin could relieve the pain. It infuriated many moms who tweeted their disgust with the ad’s tone, as the young woman equated baby carrying to being a “fad” or done under peer pressure to appear to be a hip, good mom.

Joe,
I haven’t found a way to know who’s online yet.
ME Liz Strauss said
But I REALLY like this.
http://www.twitterlocal.net
put in your city and see what happens
Marti said
But I don’t know of any way other than looking back through the last several minutes to know if someone is actually “on Twitter” at the same time you are.
--Deb said
Oh, and I haven’t managed to get any of the Twitter apps to work, yet. So I ONLY Twitter from twitter.com
Marti said
But the @ to someone will ONLY show up in their @Replies if the @ symbol is the very first thing in your post. If you say “Hi @Marti_L” I won’t see it in my sidebar.
Marti said
A lot of folks don’t seem to know that if you mouse over the right side of tweets you will get a little swoosh arrow that, if clicked, will auto fill the @ response to the person whose tweet you just ran the mouse over. (I am talking in horribly convoluted sentences tonight, sorry. I hope that made sense)
Joe said
@Marti, I know about that reply thing but it only lets them know about your tweet, you can’t tell if they are logged in.
I only go back one page, I can’t see the sense in going back any further than that.
Marti said
Twitter local looks cool Liz, Thanks!
Delaney Kirk said
I’m going back to grading as have class to teach tomorrow. Happy twittering all. Thanks Liz for the links.

Joe, sometimes folks “lurk” on Twitter though, so if you want to send someone a message, go ahead, they may be there, just not saying anything at the moment.

i get alot of *hugs* on twitter…
so i’m spreading the love, HUGS!
Mimi said
Marti, are you saying that if I type “RT @someone” they won’t see it in their @ sidebar?
Marti said
Greetings, Ming, I just added you.
Yes, Mimi, unless the @ symbol is the very first thing in a tweet, it will not show up in their sidebar @ Replies.

Marti said
Christa, I don’t think it’s paranoid or narcissistic (since I feel the same way - LOL) It’d just be nice to know. Plus I suspect a lot of folks don’t realize the @ symbol has to be first and assume you’re going to see a message that has your name in it.

Lots of TweetDeck fans here! I think it’s the most useful interface I’ve tried.
If I may add an aside (this IS open mic night, so I’m sure I may), Twitter is just one of the BEST tools for feeling connected with others around the world, all from my small town. You may not realize what a big deal that is. (I think Marti might.)
Amy Derby said

I agree Becky. Since I live out in the sticks, it is absolutely amazing to me to be able to tweet with people from all around the world. Having people drop links in that I would have never known about, getting to have conversations (within 140 characters) with people I wouldn’t have met otherwise - it still astonishes me!

Amy Derby said
Joe, I am follower 111. I like that.
Marti, I’m wondering that too. It seems to be people who follow me but who I don’t follow, except for two of them. Pretty interesting though.

I think the Twitter100 is the 100 most recent updates from your friends. So if I was the last to update, I’d be first. If I haven’t updated for awhile, I’ll be listed lower.

Hi folks, sorry I kinda missed tonight’s discussion. Is there a comment that sums up the must have aps?
ME Liz Strauss said
Yeah, Becky,
That’s the timing for sure. But the 100 people doesn’t change like that would. I think the 100 people are the most recent followers.
Marti said
Becky, you bring up a good point. As I understand from the article on Mashable, they person who did Twitter Rank was not planning on using the names/passwords for anything malicious, but was trying to make a point about how easily people are willing to give up their password. Kind of an interesting social engineering experiment I guess.
Marti said
Thanks for the explanations about Top 100
Hi Glenda!
You’re welcome, Joe.

Twitter has become one of the top 10 referring sites to my blog now that I use twitterfeed to post the blog posts to twitter. It’s a fantastic non-intrusive means of promoting my blog!

Did anyone participate in Copyblogger’s Twitter haiku contest? (First prize was a new Mac!)
I planned to, but we were with grandma all weekend.
Mine was going to be:
Knock knock who is there?/ Haiku. Haiku who? Haiku could / Haiku could win Mac
(I thought combining the old knock-knock with haiku might be cute)

Hi Glenda! Is Faith on Twitter yet?
Liz, that is very cool. I like wordclouds.

Hi Doug!
Twitter sends me lots of new traffic too! I think some come just to see who this “person” is.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
yes Liz, according to twitcloud, KNOW and THANKS are my big words.

Marti, yes I did. Just for kicks. I wouldn’t know how to use a mac. LOL

Douglas, I just added you.
No Amy, unfortunately we were tied up this weekend with grandma. (Not literally…we weren’t like hostages roped to a chair…she just had us doing chores/errands for her)

My favorite lost Twitter ap: IM support! I was just getting good at integrating it with GTalk, and they pulled it.
Now I use TwitterSpy to IM me when my name (or other keyword) is mentioned. It lags a bit, but does work!
Amy Derby said
Becky, you are quite the twitter guru. I may have to consult with you.
Marti, stop making me spit nachos out my nose. LOL

I haven’t been Tweeting so much
I really don’t know why
All of my friend are always there
I miss them so, I could just cry
After seeing them here tonight
Tweeting in comments, my eyes grow dry
With renewed vim and vigor
Back to Twitter I go, and that’s no lie.

Hi Liz, I left a comment and stepped out… boy everyone has brought up some great apps. You asked about Monitter. I have used it… and I like it. You can set up to send you RSS feeds of tweets containing certain keywords. Very useful for finding people with similar interests.

What happens if Twitter starts charging? It turns into a different flavor of Constant Contact. So far, I’ve resisted all the urges to pay money for “enhanced” versions of social media and other sites. If I have to pay to send, I’ll stop sending. If I have to pay to receive, I’ll just drop off.

My core Twitter-app is Wordpress.com which fills my account via Twitterfeed.com. The back channels are Twitterific: local and mobile. An evolving back channel is Facebook where I’m getting some feedback on my tweets.
