The Mic is On: We’re Talking about What We’ll Learn or Teach …

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
… this Year
We might talk about:
- becoming a speaker, a skier, or a rockstar
- learning to drive a speedster, drive a golf ball, fly a plane
- teaching writing, illustration, or how to dance the cha-cha

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
Oh, and bring links about learning and teaching to share!

It looks like your time is managing you pretty well now!

I’m a little old to become a first time rock star, so perhaps I’d better set my sights on speaker…

Hi,
What happened to the comments I posted a few minutes ago???
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Brooke!
So is mine. I guess it helps to know where you’re going. eh?

Mike,
You’d make a wonderful speaker. You’re inspiring and entertaining at the same time. Smart too!

Hi Erica!
You posted those over at the announcement post . . . backstage.
Want me to move them over?
Joanna Young said
Hi Liz and everyone, I was thinking about staying up late as it was a while since I’d been over, and when I saw you were talking about learning and teaching I knew I had to pop in…
I am a proud and joyful jubilant learner don’t you know

Hi Glenda!
Happy 2008. You’re a teacher.

Hmmm. I know I want to learn how to become a Liz-appointed SOB this year…

It does help Liz - I just got it alll worked out this weekend - buut I was starting after xmas.

Mike, maybe we could be rock star speakers?
Liz, it’s just this pesky need for sleep that keeps slowing me down!
Solo Business Marketing said
If I secured a speaking engagement every day for a year, it still wouldn’t be enough for me (yes, I’m greedy, but I’m also informative, enlightening, and entertaining).
Liz, you’re a natural (your info was great at BlogWorld Expo), and I know that many bloggers who come here are as well.
There’s one thing you may not know if you find yourself preparing to speak to an audience: they’re routing for your success and theirs, too.
As for resources, I recently found The Speaking Channel but haven’t checked it out yet (http://www.speakingchannel.tv/), and I’m developing a site called The Fearless Speaker (http://www.thefearlessspeaker.com), which is far from ready, but it’s coming along.
This is my first participation on Open Mic. I’m sure it won’t be my last.

I’m going to teach the world to love Klondike Bars! [Whispers] Tonight’s flavor is Cherry Cheesecake, by the way.
Erica Ross-Krieger said
@Mike - thanks for asking about the restaurant. It’s a great concept and doing well all over the east coast. Making it go here in northern CA is only as touch as the real estate market is — which is tough right now. Will go looking for space again tomorrow. Here ther eis a new spot next door to Starbucks downtown. Sweet if it’s available:)

One of the things I’m going to be teaching this year is a writing workshop in Sardinia. It’s a first for me and I’m very excited about it.
I know I’ll learn loads from the participants on the course (and future courses) and from the stretch in the teaching. I’m learning already about marketing and pr from Emma, who I’m running it with (she’s a lot more business savvy than me). And as of yesterday I’m going to study some Italian again. A trip to Sardinia in the autumn is a great motivator to study!
The best thing is that it all grew out of blogging - shared comments between me and Emma Bird who blogs at HowToItaly. You never know where comments are going to lead you!
Joanna
PS Of course we’re promoting it through a blog:-)It’s called Absorbing Writing
Mike said
Hey Char,
I apologize for not saying “Hello” earlier. Routines are important, but balancing the need for consistency and freshness is always interesting.
Mike
Char said
Chris - there will be days like that, but you will find your routine. Do you take time each day to map out what you want to accomplish? Do you schedule time for social networking, lunch, calls, etc? It really helps if you do.
Rick Cockrum said
Happy New Year, Mike.
I’m still finding my way back in to it.
Merry Christmas to anyone who’s Orthodox, or not. Merry Christmas everyone!
Chris Cree said
Glenda, So you went pro? Congratulations! That warrants a double Triple Chocolate!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Liz, my left thumb is getting a great workout! Now if the rest of me could catch up!
Erica Ross-Krieger said
@Chris I remember back in the day (1989 believe it or not) when I left corporate America and launched out. Establishing a good routine took time, patience (with myself) and mega course-corrections til I found what worked. It’s an on-going refinement process to this day:)
ME Liz Strauss said
Joanna!
That sounds really romantic and fabulous! When do you go?
Mike said
Joanna,
The story of your Sardinia boondoggle, er, workshop is a great one!
Mike
Joanna Young said
Chris, I’m wondering if I can only get Klondike Bars in the US? In which case a trip across the Atlantic might be required
ME Liz Strauss said
Wow! This is like an Old Open Comment Night . . . the comments are flying!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Yep, CC, I went pro last week. I’ll brb with the url. wow, double triple chocolate, I’ll be flying in no time!
Chris Cree said
Erica, I won’t tell you what I was doing back then. But I promise it wasn’t leaving corporate America.
I’m also hoping to dodge some of those mega course corrections. (Please tell me it’s possible. It’s OK to lie about that one tonight.)
Joanna Young said
@ Rick This seems very profound to me - isn’t this what teaching is?? “Mostly I’m trying to clear up the muddiness that is my vision so some other people can see clearly”
@ Liz, it’s the first weekend in October, Emma promises me it will be sunny but not too hot for us to sit outside and think, doodle, write. You’re right, romantic and fabulous it is, two words that have been missing for a bit too long round here!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Yep, CC, I went pro last week at http://community.disaboom.com/community/left_thumb_blogger/default.aspx wow, double triple chocolate, I’ll be flying in no time!
Joanna Young said
Liz, sorry I meant in my bit of the world, not “round here” as in your space, which is always fabulous!
Mike said
Clarifying one’s vision is often the most difficult of tasks. We have a sense of the pieces, but the interlinks and sequences can be tought to anneal completely.
SunnySchlenger said
Hi everyone!
Thought I’d stop by on this cold Tuesday night.
ME Liz Strauss said
Mike,
Did you just say anneal?
Mike said
Glenda,
I just hit your link and got an error. Try holding that Klondike in your OTHER hand while you type!
Mike
Mike said
Liz,
I DID say anneal.
Mike
Erica Ross-Krieger said
chris. Okay. You will have to sift through and figure out the lies:) Routine guideline #1: Start w/ a good breakfast (hey I’m a nutritionist) Guideline #2: Decide what’s important for: your life, your biz, the year, the month, the week, and that day Guideline #3: Do it! Guideline #4 Pause for a Klondike Bar now and then:) (Do they come in organic?) No course corrections necessary if you adhere to this. I promise;)
Joanna Young said
Hi Erica (and Mike) I’m part of Teaching Sells though I haven’t found time to explore it for a few weeks now. I’m happy to talk about it by e-mail if you like
Joanna
ME Liz Strauss said
Wow! Mike,
I don’t know whether I should reprimand or praise you.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Sunny,
It’s 60 degrees in Chicago!
Joanna Young said
Mike - boondoggle?! That sounds like a word Mr MZM would come up with.
I’m not even going to ask about anneal.
Rick Cockrum said
I don’t know about profound, Joanna, but I think you’re right. I like the way Mike put it, except instead of annealing I see more of a process of finding an appropriate tensegrity so the bits and pieces hang together.
You keep talking like that about Italy and my wife will get me there yet. She’s been trying to persuade me to go for years.
SunnySchlenger said
It’s 60 in Chicago and 40 in Arizona???
Mike said
Liz,
I choose the second option. Long ago before people did web work an iconoclastic fellow named Neal Katz created a hypertext tool call MaxThink. He called the process of reworking and rewiring the collection of nodes and links ‘annealing’. I always liked the term.
Mike
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Ok, putting down my Klondike momentarily. Try this http://community.disaboom.com/community/left_thumb_blogger/default.aspx

Erica Ross-Krieger said
Joanna and Mike:
Welcome any conversations or email about TS. I’m around all week and will check in with you. thanks.
Rick Cockrum said
I guess I’m going to get slapped for tensegrity now.
Mike and I will go to the bad boys corner and eat Little Debbies.
Mike said
Sunny,
Buy that AZ Lottery ticket right now! That doesn’t happen but once every couple of years!!
Mike
ME Liz Strauss said
I’m so laughing, Mike,
You used iconoclastic to explain why you like the word anneal.
[shakes head, whispers to Chris quick get Mike a cognac Klondike ]
Rick Cockrum said
We’ve loved the beautiful spring weather in Pennsylvania.
Joanna Young said
Glenda, your piece is great, good on you.
Joe said
Hey Liz, Hey All
I totally forgot what night it was. I’m glad Chris reminded me or I would still be trying to do things I could do tomorrow.
SunnySchlenger said
Thanks, Mike.
I love the tensigrity concept. I was a big fan of Bucky Fuller’s. Those geodesic domes are cool!
Mike said
Iconoclastic is the only word for Neal Katz that meets with SOB site rules! And iconoclastic is one of my favorite words (yeah, go figure).
I’m laughing because Rick included a definition of tensegrity that reads: “a portmanteau of tensional integrity”. He just taught me what a portmanteau is! I’ll have to create one in a later comment in homage…
Char said
It was in the 70s today in VA - it felt like Spring! The kids got the bikes out and we took the dogs for a walk too.

Little Debbies???

I’m having browser issues. Grr.
Of course it could be operator error. I suppose.

I want to learn to be a real blogger, and take it seriously. To do something I’m proud of in that arena. There’s a lot of great examples here!
Also, to consider take charge of what I’m photographing and put serious effort there. I’d love to sell one or more photographs by the end of this year.
Rick Cockrum said
[whispers]Mike, did Chris meet your Russian buddies?
[out loud] My favorite portmanteau word is imagineer - it’s not just for Disney anymore.
Mike said
Instead of plain old Little Debbies, I’m having Mini Confectioner’s Haggis!
ME Liz Strauss said
Okay, Okay
Tensegrity is a portmanteau of tensional integrity. It refers to the integrity of structures as being based in a synergy between balanced tension and compression components.
That’s from the wwwwwi-wwwwi–wwwwikwwwwiwwww-iki- pedia
I guess tonight we’re learning and teaching vocabulary.
Joanna Young said
Hi Glenda, I’m sorry I didn’t look closely enough first time round. Got engrossed in the piece about the limitations of the calendar.
Maybe you’ll find some inspiration for the post round here?

Todd,
You’ve come to the right place. There are many accomplished and generous bloggers here tonight. And hacks like me!
Hi Joe!
Erica Ross-Krieger said
[she whispers] as a kid, I was a big fan of the Hostess fare - Twinkies, cupcakes, etc. [not something I routinely share with my nutrition clients] But I’m a product of the west coast. My husband tells me on the east coast, Little Debbies cakes were the snack of choice. You all agree?
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Todd!
Welcome to Open Comment Night!!
Someone here could buy your first photograph. Who knows?!!
Mike said
Erica,
Little Debbies are the Avis of the snack cake world, but they have a staunch following!
Mike
ME Liz Strauss said
Erica,
I’m from the midwest and I think Little Debbies are obnoxiously sweet and too dry.
Hostess cupcakes for me.
Joanna Young said
Mike, that link was priceless
We’ll have to make sure we share it with Robert H - he loves haggis!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Joe!
Great to see you!
Mike said
Rick,
It turns out that Chris left the general shipping trade to go into the specialized world of Klondikes (it’s still kind of hush-hush).
Imagineer is a great term!
Mike
SunnySchlenger said
Krimpets.
Rick Cockrum said
Hi Todd. Welcome. Liz’s place is the place to come to learn a great deal.
Joanna, Little Debbies are a sweet here in the US. There are several varieties, chocolate rolls, oatmeal cookie sandwiches with a cream filling, brownines, crackers, and several others. They’re horribly bad for you and taste very good if you have a liking for sweets. Larry Weaver, a comedian, even wrote a love song about Little Debbie.
Mike said
Joanna,
I figured you’d have a special appreciation of that one. Too bad I didn’t have a picture of the little toothpicks with Rabbie Burns’ picture on them that I used for garnish…
Mike
Erica Ross-Krieger said
Okay, so now we know how to party nxt we all meet. The menu will be:
Klondike bars (assorted flavors & alcohol content)
Hostess cupcakes (the chocolate ones with the white squiggles)
What else? Love to learn what you think:)
Joanna Young said
Rick, thanks for the link to the song. I’m learning a lot about sweet stuff tonight!
ME Liz Strauss said
Erica,
At the birthday celebration, we invented a new dessert . . . apple poptart icecream sandwiches made with butter pecan ice cream.
Joe said
You guys never tried TastyKakes it seems.
I like all of them.
Rick, do they have them in PGH?
Rick Cockrum said
Liz said that word? I feel bad now.
Krimpets. That’s it! Answers.com goes to a page on Tastykake when you ask about krimpets.
Mike said
Erica,
Mini Confectioner’s Haggis! It’s a can’t miss treat!
We’re all pretty amenable except when it comes to the adult beverages. There are several schisms among the group…
Mike
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Joanna,
Since you’re here, and I’m here, I’ll ask you here: would you like to kick off my British virtual book tour on Robbie Burns Day?
Erica Ross-Krieger said
Liz et al, thanks for the chat. I am growing to love this arena! Next Tuesday is my birthday and we will be celebrating (no Klondike bars I’m afraid). It’s also the 1-year anniversary since my Dad died, so will be taking time to savor the memories. I’ve got a few more minutes here and then will return here 1/22.
Joe said
The Butterscotch krimpets, or better yet the ones with the jelly in the middle.
Always loved them as a kid.
Mike said
Glenda,
Congratulations and kudos on the latest column! You’re on your way to that red Ferrari…
Mike
Rick Cockrum said
Hi Joe! Tastykake is here, but not as common as Little Debbie.
Mike said
Have a great night and a great birthday, Erica!
Joe said
Ya can’t go to a WAWA without seeing TastyKakes and Pies next to the Cash Register.
Rick Cockrum said
Good night, Erica.
ME Liz Strauss said
Thanks for coming, Erica!
Glad you enjoyed yourself.
Have a happy birthday!!
Mike said
Joe, I’m almost afraid to ask…
SunnySchlenger said
Yes — jelly or butterscotch. *drool*
It doesn’t get any better except maybe their coffeekakes (or however they spell it).
Joanna Young said
Erica, it was good to see you here. I’ll be in touch re Teaching Sells.
Hope you get through next week okay
Joanna
Rick Cockrum said
I’ll ask. Joe, what’s a WAWA?
Joe said
Mike, you have to be from the Philly area to understand the draw of a jelly or butterscotch krimpet from TastyKake.
SPECIAL in it’s own way (a kids perspective).
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Thanks Mike. Btw, are we still on for that TAGR collaboration?
Joanna Young said
Glenda - that sounds like a fantastic idea - I’d love to. Just let me know what we need to do to get it set up
Joanna
PS who would have thought I’d find two references to Robert Burns here tonight!
ME Liz Strauss said
I have no clue what a krimpet could possibly look like.
SunnySchlenger said
Joe - I’m from Baltimore and I never knew that krimpets were local. Boy, what they’re all missing…
Mike said
Hi Glenda,
Things have been crazy of late, so I’m a bit behind on that…sorry.
Mike
Joe said
Come on Rick, you never heard of WAWA Pa?
There was and is a big dairy farm there, right across the road from the Franklin Mint.
They started selling their own milk and dairy products on Route 1 and expanded to be as big or BIGGER than 7-11 around these parts.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Thanks Joanna, I’ll email you with details. This’ll be great.
SunnySchlenger said
Krimpets look like a twinkie with a crimp in the middle where they shot in the stuffing.
Joe said
See, Sunny Knows!
Mike said
Those krimpets sound kinda tasty!
Char said
Wawa is huge here too. Its the “upscale” gas station and convenience store.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
No problem, Mike. Maybe in the Chinese New Year?
Joanna Young said
Sunny, you’ll need to provide a translation for those of us who don’t talk US English!
ME Liz Strauss said
I don’t know . . . once you’ve had Hostess, nothing else seems as moist and wonderful!!!
SunnySchlenger said
How do you imgine they ever came up with the name Wawa? That’s kind of like Piggly Wigglies which I remember from years ago.
Rick Cockrum said
No. I’ve never heard of it, Joe. But then, I’ve never been anywhere in eastern Pennsylvania except Harrisburg. Sad to say, I’ve never made it to the Philadelphia area.
Erica Ross-Krieger said
Thanks for the birthday wishes gang. see you in 2 weeks.
Joanna Young said
Liz, you know that almost sounds like a strapline you could use for a blog that was just a little bit different from the rest
But it might get you a whole lot of strange visitors
Mike said
Liz,
Do you have family at Hostess?
Their products are first-rate, but Little Debbies have a quirkiness (e.g., HoHos filled with chocolate frosting AND chocolate syrup!) that sets them apart.
Mike
ME Liz Strauss said
Joanna!
I’m not touching that one . . . no way!!
SunnySchlenger said
Yeah, Liz, but Hostess made those terrible Sno-balls!
Joanna, a twinkie looks like a krimpet without the crimp.
Seriously, it’s a small, brown elongated cake. Come to think of it, that sounds terrible!
Rick Cockrum said
Do any of these brands or sweets exist in Great Britain, Joanna?
ME Liz Strauss said
Mike,
Little Debbies have the wrong ratio of frosting to cake . . . it’s just wrong.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
brb, techie issues
Joe said
Got that from Google.
WAWA is about 10 miles from where I live.
Rick, you gotta get EAST of Harrisburg, there is a lot to see over here.
Joanna Young said
Rick, no, none of them, and we have a totally different language to describe sweets and cakes. Like frosting for example, it doesn’t exist here, it’s icing.
It’s a wonder I manage to keep up at all!
Joanna
Sorry I forgot the poptarts - poptarts we do have
ME Liz Strauss said
Gee, Joe,
I thought a WAWA was a pedal for a guitar. . . . Imagine all these years . . .
Mike said
I thought Twinkies had conquered the world!
Joe said
Liz, I think the name for the pedal came from the same place (isn’t that the sound a cow makes when it walks through the muck and mire?)
SunnySchlenger said
I remember visiting a friend outside of London a number of years ago, and when I mentioned “peanut butter and jelly sandwich” she looked at me like I had two heads. She couldn’t imagine putting together something that awful.
SunnySchlenger said
Liz, is there something about Open Mic nite that makes people hungry?
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Sunny,
That’s because what they call jelly isn’t what we call jelly.
Mike said
Joe,
You’re thinking of ‘ploch’. I grew up in Wisconsin, so I know.
Mike
Rick Cockrum said
Thanks, Joe.
That was Coke, Mike, and someday mini confectioners haggis.
We use both frosting and icing, Joanna. Well, come to think of it icing is used more in my family, which is from Alabama. Southerners tend to have English closer to British English.
Chris, do they say icing or frosting in your neck of the woods?
Joe said
Sunny, I always eat befor I get here or else I would look like the Hindenberg in flight
Joanna Young said
Hey guys, I’m going to have to head now. I’ve had a wonderful time.
I’ve learned… some new vocabulary, a recipe for mini confectioners haggis, cultural insights into sweets and cakes (will surely stand me in good stead when I get to visit), that blogging conversations lead to interesting new writing - publishing - working together possibilities, and that my heart always feels warmer after time spent here
It’s not quite a poem but I hope you like it
Joanna
Rick Cockrum said
Good night, Joanna, and thank you.
Mike said
Joanna,
That was marvelous! Good night!!
Mike
Joe said
Nite Joanna, May you always have Icing on your Krimpets!
Chris Cree said
Geeze. Step out for one phone call and everyone goes Gonzo on the food talk. I’m hungry again!
Joanna Young said
Good night all
Joe - thank you!!!
ME Liz Strauss said
Good night, Joanna
It’s such a treat when you stay up late with us!!
SunnySchlenger said
Nice meeting you, Joanna!
Joanna Young said
And you Sunny
Liz, for me too, it plays havoc with my sleep, but I’m so smiling as I switch off now
ME Liz Strauss said
So smiling!
ME Liz Strauss said
Whew! Is everyone okay?
Joe said
What? 3 minutes without a comment about food?
We’re Ok, we’re just eating our Krimpets.
ME Liz Strauss said
My husband said we forgot to mention Zingers . . . another sub-standard Hostess replacement in my book.
SunnySchlenger said
Uh oh…
Zingers, Ho-Hos, Ring Dings…
SunnySchlenger said
Stop me, please.
ME Liz Strauss said
Sorry, but I’m about to have a mini-Reese’s peanut butter cup. Anyone else want one?
Mike said
As I recall, the Dolly Madison cakes had the approval of the Peanuts gang back in the day…
Chris Cree said
I’m a fan of Little Debbie’s Swiss Rolls. But Gorgeous says I’m not allow to have that woman in our house anymore.
Joe said
I know I’m the only one around here that remembers (or ever had) a Mrs Smiths Pie.
Very big in Philly, but doesn’t exist anymore.
Fruit Pies, Apple, Cherry, Blueberry and even that Shofly Pie.
Great eats, but had to stay local to stay fresh and delicious. So it couldn’t handle the now.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
I’m back. Is a krimpet different from a crumpet? Can a crumpet be krimped or a krimpet crumped?
Mike said
But Little Debbie looks so harmless…
We should probably also mention Moon Pies for our friends in Charlotte, NC!
Mike
Rick Cockrum said
I’ll join you, Liz. I’ve got a Reese’s peanut butter egg.
Mike said
Joe,
We’ve got Mrs. Smith’s pies in the freezer case here.
Mike
ME Liz Strauss said
Salud! Rick!
SunnySchlenger said
All I have are 100 calorie dark chocolate Hershey bars. *sigh*
Mike said
Rick,
You’re either way too early or way too late with a peanut butter egg.
Joe said
No Way Mike.
I’ll give you my address and pay S&H if you send me a Cherry Pie from Mrs Smith’s/
OOOOohhhhhh, the memories. *drooling at the thought*
Rick Cockrum said
No day is too late or too early for a Reese’s egg.
Are Mrs. Smith’s pies the ones in the little white box?
Mike said
I have to run to the store for batteries. I’ll scout the pie aisle. The sirens of the snack aisle are already calling my name…

It is time for me to finish up my work for tonight. Eat well, all, and sleep well.
Thank you, Liz, for another wonderful evening. Good night.

This has been such fun, but my arm is beginning to give out.
Thank you for a delicious evening, Liz!
ME Liz Strauss said
Good Night, Riok!
Great to see you!
Joe said
Yeah Rick, the small ones, single servings.
But my next door neighbor when I was growing up worked for them and used to bring the “damaged” big pies home. The whole neighborhood had desert that night!

Hi Liz,
Hi everybody,
Thought I’d stop by for a bit. It’s been sooo long.

Seems like the group has gone for the night
Maybe the sweets have taken their own delight
In turning the jelly krimpets into dreams
To lull us into our sleep, so it seems
Somehow our conversation leads us to food
But that’s not bad, it is always good
When we have such fun living for the day
We can reward ourselves in just this way.

Joe, maybe people don’t want to type with their mouths full?
Sandy said
Oh no, I cleared out the room…
Mike said
Hi Joe,
Check out the Mrs. Smith’s web site. Is that the right product? If so, Giant and a number of other stores carry them in PA. If it’s not, I’m so sorry.

Goodnight Joe and Hello Sandy!
ME Liz Strauss said
Good Night, Joe!
Sleepy swell!
Mike said
I’ll have some, Sandy. Thanks! Have a cherry cheesecake Klondike bar on Chris Cree…
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Sandy!!
Welcome back thanks for bringing one of my favorite desserts!!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Sounds delish, Sandy, thank you.
Sandy said
Hi Mike, Liz, Glenda,
Glad you are all still here! Thanks for the Klondike bar.
ME Liz Strauss said
Sandy is taking up teaching bloggers who are starting out. She’s the only person I know who knows both Typepad and WordPress like a maven.
Sandy said
Thanks Liz (blush)
I really enjoy working with people. The computer is not as scary as some of them think it is…

I’m also learning this year - tai chi. And I’m returning to yoga class and considering a college class. Any suggestions on something interesting?
Mike said
What was our original topic? Oh yes, challenges for this year. Anybody have anything exciting to share?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
lol Mike, my word for the year is focus ‘cept Tuesday nights!
Mike said
I’m a little slow, I guess. Wow, Sandy, it sounds like you have a full plate! Dual mavenship. Very impressive!
Mike said
Glenda,
Focus is a great…er…focus for the year!

ME Liz Strauss said
I have few things on my list. I’m writing a post about them. . . .
Mike said
I’ll look forward to that, Liz! As for me, I registered mikedewitt.net to something great with…
ME Liz Strauss said
oooo Mike. I’m liking the sound of that one!!
Mike said
I’ve got some good ideas. Now I need to be like Glenda and focus and execute on my ideas in a few areas.
Sandy said
Sounds like we’re all busy. I like the word “focus” Glenda. That’s one I work on quite often. I picked “joy” for the year.
ME Liz Strauss said
Sandy,
“joy” is one of my all-time favorite words.
ME Liz Strauss said
Mike,
Drop a hint. Drop a hint!
Mike said
Sandy,
‘Joy’ sounds more appealing than ‘focus’. I’m guessing that they go hand-in-hand; joy is the strategy, focus is the tactic.
Or something like that.

Liz,
There are four elements of expertise / value that I want to promote and explore. Three of them are a progression of sorts: process design, experience design, and transformation design (which delves into what’s going on in people’s heads and how to help them change). The fourth is in strategizing on how to increase top line revenue.
Mike
ME Liz Strauss said
Mike
That’s sounding like something good’s going on.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Mike, transformation design sounds scary when talking about my head!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
ok, potentially dumb question but tonight’s topic IS learning: what is top line revenue? Is that income before expenses?
Mike said
Actually Glenda, it’s not. There’s a lot of gobbledygook spouted about “What’s Going On Up There”, and so there’s a lot of mistrust and misunderstanding and miscommunication as a result. I think some simple yet practical models for understanding how people’s minds work (and why we do or don’t respond to others’ messages) would be tremendously helpful in engendering harmony amongst our colleagues / family / friends.
Mike said
Glenda,
You nailed the definition of top line revenue!

Did I put Sandy to sleep? Nuts!
