The Mic is On: We’re Talking Star Trek, Star Wars, Sci Fi Night
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 6:58 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
Let’s Boldy Go …
Some nights on the interwebs can seem like we’ve embarked on the last frontier. Why not boldly go one step further and explore the explorer of science fiction world?
We might talk about
- Sci-Fi Movies
- Sci-Fi Books
- E T
- Dune
- Joe’s Alien and Dr. Who
And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
Oh, and bring example links.

Joe,
I thought I might see you tonight!
Joe Hauckes said
Well, ya thought right, Liz.
And I brought Al along to see what this is all about.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Al,
You’ll probably be setting us all straight. Have you guys seen Star Trek yet?
Joe Hauckes said
The New One? Only the trailers.
ME Liz Strauss said
Yeah, that’s the one I meant.
I’ve been wondering whether it’s at the local IMAX.

Hi all… anyone see the new Terminator yet? What did you think?

Hi Christa,
Haven’t seen Terminator either. Did you?

Greetings! (flashes Spock’s hand signal)
I love Sci Fi! Was thrilled to see new TV shows, Fringe, Dollhouse and Chuck all renewed.
Joe Hauckes said
What do you think of the upcoming Land of the Lost w/Will Ferrell?
The TV show was dumb, the movie looks dummer!
Wasn’t that a movie too?
Marti_L said
Hi Liz and Joe! Hope this finds both of you well.
Haven’t seen the new Star Trek movie. Planned to go see it at the drive-in (we still have those out here in Missouri) but we got a thunderstorm.
Will Ferrell’s movies are usually pretty silly, but yeah, the commercials for Land of the Lost do look exceptionally silly.
Christa M. Miller said
Liz, I haven’t seen Terminator yet… the first one is still my favorite, wondered how the latest stacks up!
Mark Dykeman said
Hi everyone. I’m a long time Star Trek fan and I finally saw the new movie last Thursday. It took a healthy suspension of disbelief and a willingness to let something new unfold, but I really enjoyed the movie despite its faults. It was definitely the funnest Star Trek movie in many years.
Here’s a question for you all, which I’ll try to keep as spoiler free for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie: do you think that James T. Kirk deserved what he got at the end of the movie?
ME Liz Strauss said
Heya, Marti,
How goes things in your life? … sometimes I think life is more sci-fi than real.

I love that sci-fi can immerse me in another world. I know any fiction can do that, but for me, it’s easier to forget about the daily grind of real life (we’re hanging in there BTW, Liz, thanks for asking)
I am fascinated by the “worlds” that sci-fi writers create. The depth of some like Star Trek and Star Wars, that had complete cultures and languages for their non-human beings - what a lot of work, but so thrilling for the viewer!
ME Liz Strauss said
#32 Mark,
You’ve got a point there!

Woohoo! I was bummed when I saw the Open Mic emails b/c I thought I had missed it again. I’ve been out every Tuesday night, home too late to join the fun. But I’m here tonight, and on a great topic too! Yay!!! I enjoy Star Trek, haven’t seen every episode of every series, but Hubby is working on that.
I haven’t seen the new Star Trek movie yet. Has anyone mentioned the fact that Randy Pausch was an extra in the movie? I thought that was so neat.

Joe,
There must be some bad sci fi virus going around because my hosting company lost its entire email server farm today. My email has been down for 12 stupid hours !
Christa M. Miller said
Marti, I like sci-fi that sticks with humanity — Blade Runner, Terminator, Minority Report — other worlds are interesting, but to me no more so than other countries. I know, learning to deal with “alien” is part of humanity, but I guess I like the deeper, more philosophical issues — values and what is felt rather than seen.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
#42 Yes, Liz! But, I’m trying to focus on today, and deal with tomorrow once it becomes today.
How do you keep up with more and more people wanting something from you?
ME Liz Strauss said
Holy, Kevin!
Too bad your email storyline can’t stay up as long as the Star Trek storyline. So sorry to hear that.

Amy LeForge said
Liz, SO glad to be here. I don’t know if I would recognize him either. But I’ll be looking more carefully because I saw the article mentioning his presence. It’s just so cool that he was given the chance to live another dream before he died. I really respect the producer for offering him that opportunity.
{waving to everyone} Hi Everyone!
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda,
I’ve learned to answer more slowly, to show people where to find their own answers, to say “no” more often, and to raise my price for things I don’t want to do.
Marti_L said
Liz, I loved reading Dune too!
Yes Christa, showing “humanity” (morality, philosophy) and how it interacts with the “alien” is a very interesting aspect of sci-fi.
“Lost” is one of my favorite TV shows because of the way the characters react to all the weird supernatural stuff going on.
ME Liz Strauss said
I love that Hulu commercial, but folks who don’t know what Hulu is don’t “get” it.
ME Liz Strauss said
Yeah, Amy, but I imagine it was an easy wish to grant. Who could say no to something like that?
Kevin Ferrasci OMalley said
I don’t want to go off topic but if our moderator will allow a slightly off topic conundrum ?
I’m debating whether to switch my email hosting to another provider.
But since it can take 24 hrs for the nameservers to be recognized
that would mean my email might be dead another day. So opinions please, do I wait for my current hosting company to get it fixed or switch now ?
Marti_L said
I like pretty much all kinds of sci-fi except the horror version. Not really into “Predator” and those like that. But that’s just me - I know they are popular with a lot of folks
ME Liz Strauss said
Kevin,
Why not an alternate email address on a different server on purpose? If the first routes to the second, could you keep updated enough to alert folks that your main email is down and that no email after XX:XX has been received.
Marti_L said
I love those Hulu commercials! I don’t think they are really hard to understand, but I know what Hulu is…for someone like grandma, I imagine they are a complete bafflement. But she isn’t their “target” anyway, because she would’t use her computer to watch TV anyway.
Kevin, wish I could help you, but I am a technotard *grin*
ME Liz Strauss said
Kevin,
Then route them to your Twitter account for service issues.
The Goal Guru said

Thanks for the advice, Liz. I have several emails, many with questions, all deserving a response. I’m annoyed with myself that I haven’t responded yet, but things keep coming at me. Meanwhile I haven’t finished the post about being stuck in Batman’s bathroom!
Christa M. Miller said
Sci-fi horror is like any other kind of horror — has to be done well or else it’s just plain cheesy. (In fact sci-fi in general has that in common with horror!) I didn’t care for Predator either, much less Alien v. Predator… but I loved “Alien” and “Aliens” as well as “Terminator”!
BTW I also loved the movie “Contact” for the way it brought together faith and science.
Joe Hauckes said
Kevin, keep the hosting em but use a b/u server like gmai or hotmail for the just in case thing. IMO
ME Liz Strauss said
Jill,
I suppose there’s more than one way to order them.
Joe, what do you think?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Sci-fi is more Darrell’s thing than mine. I guess I’m looking for aliens that are more alien-looking, otherwise don’t waste my time!
Tho, those Star Wars creatures with nubian ears and Jamaican accents are my favourite, so far.
ME Liz Strauss said
I never have liked horror of any kind. I never liked it when my brothers jumped out to scare me.
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda,
I love your description of those characters. I wonder what they wrote in the script character sketch for the species.
Marti_L said
Yes Christa, cheesy = fail
*grin*
Glenda, a lot of people thought that Jar Jar Binks (Flying my geek flag, having the name at the tip of my fingers - LOL) was a bit of a racial slur…kind of an “Aunt Jamima” characterization, but I never thought of it like that. I thought it was just cute and funny.
Joe Hauckes said
Liz, I’ve been watching all the ST’s since the beginning, they have no real order to me anymore.
If you have the time, start from the first season first episode (1966) all the others don’t really matter what order until you get to TNG then start with the first episode, then it really doesn’t matter.
And if you really have the time, watch all the ST movies in order, then the TNG movies in order, then finish with Generations.
Enterprise, DS9, Voyager are only there to expand on the original concept so whatever whenever, it doesn’t matter.
Christa M. Miller said
I partly like horror because it’s (still) a rebellion against my ultra-religious mother!
But the rebellion is because I’ve always been drawn to the dark side. I think it is just as important to understand as the light, if not more so. So while I don’t go for “torture porn” (Hostel and all those movies) or the Friday the 13th-types franchises, I love good zombie/vampire/werewolf/psycho movies!
ME Liz Strauss said
I knew you’d know, Joe.
You’re a maven on Star Trek.
Joe Hauckes said
Marti_L that’s the problem with almost anything you try to write, Sci-Fi or otherwise, something will offend someone somewhere, so just write true to the storyline and most people will understand from whence they came.
Christa M. Miller said
Marti, my brother-in-law was one of those who thought that about Jar Jar Binks. Never saw the movie so wouldn’t know. But how come no one seemed to complain as much about Jabba the Hutt stereotyping fat people? (Maybe because when he was introduced, we were less “sensitive”?)
--Deb said
Hello, everyone!
Oh, and for the record? I detest horror, but love good, intriguing sci-fi.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey, Marti and Joe,
If you get a chance watch the Lion King and purposefully look for stereotypes … You can find plenty if you want to.
Joe Hauckes said
Christa, I was going to mention Jabba, but didn’t want to offend anyone skinny-defecient.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Marti, was Jar Jar Binks that creature’s name? Sorry, not very up on Stars Wars, though I have a few with Darrell. Wifey duties, you know! But something about that creature caught my attention. For some reason, he reminds me of my brother.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Deb!
Great to see you!!
Good sci-fi has characters that we think about long after the story is over.
Marti_L said
Vampires! How could I forget vampires? LOL
Yes, I love vampire stories, but again, I think it is because of the “humanity” (and loss thereof).
Yes Joe, people can “find” stereotypes anywhere if that’s what they want to find. I guess we can’t help it, we all stereotype things to some degree, whether we like to admit it or not.
Joe Hauckes said
You think that’s bad Liz, look at some of the old Disney flicks. Pick one, any one and you will see plenty.
Not to mention all the cartoons we saw on Saturday mornings as kids.
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
This must be some sort of weird sci-fi warp. You haven’t ended up in Akismet yet.
ME Liz Strauss said
Marti,
Are vampires sci-fi or just horror?
Marti_L said
Glenda I understand the tradeoff we make with our spouses. I trade Steven Segal movies for costume dramas with my husband *grin*
Great to see all the comments - that’s what I love about Open Mike Night!
--Deb said
I try never to think about Jar Jar Binks–SO annoying!
The cast of Firefly, though? A pleasure to ponder.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Yes, Marti, hubby has watched his share of romantic tear-jerkers! The things we do for our marriage, eh?
Joe Hauckes said
Liz, that’s because I control your TV set. Don’t adjust your dial.
(Remember when TV’s had Dials?)
Christa M. Miller said
Liz, in “Life Force” the vampires were sci-fi AND horror!
Zombies for me represent the ultimate loss of humanity, which is why the Romero films portrayed them so well. Vampires can still talk and think. Zombies, not so much.
As for sci-fi/horror crossover, though, how about the classics from the 1950s — notably “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” a great analogy for communism? (Or, for that matter, all the takeoffs that Mystery Science Theater 3000 did on those? LOL)
Brooke said
Sorry I am late! Hello to you all!
Joe Hauckes said
Has anyone besides me ever notice how many Sci-Fi actors end up on various Sci-Fi shows?
Maybe different makeup or different characters, but the Same Person in different shows.
Marti_L said
That’s a good question, Liz. I”m not sure whether vampires fall into “horror” or “sci-fi” or a combination. Genre-niching is tricky - LOL
Yes Glenda (let’s sing “What I Did For Love” together *grin*)
Amy said
I’ve never seen any of these, but I wanted to say hi. Hope everyone is doing well.

Hey Amy!
--Deb said
Vampires are horror, so far as I’m concerned. (The very idea gave me nightmares when I was a kid.) Buffy’s mix of humor and vampire is entertaining, but vampires definitely fall under “horror” to me.
Sci-fi is about, um, SCIENCE fiction. Time travel (love time travel). Aliens. Space travel. Vampires are from the dark, monster-under-the-bed psyche fear.
Amy LeForge said
Ooooo, you’ve had such a great discussion while I was gone putting boys and laundry to bed.
Glenda, I was shocked (!!) that Batman’s bathroom was so poorly designed. Why didn’t they have a button for an automatic opener?
I hate horror too. The only truly frightening movies I’ve ever watched were by accident. And I really dislike being frightened. Why would I pay money for that?
I think one of the great things about Sci-Fi in general is the freedom to tell a good story. Being able to bend reality’s rules allows for some fantastic creativity.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Amy L, well, Batman’s stylish metal waste paper basket is round no more!
--Deb said
Yes, Amy. I need to be able to sleep at night!
ME Liz Strauss said
Amy,
You just fully described me. I think shy people don’t like horror.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Amy Derby!
heh heh
How are you? I think you would write some pretty cool lawyer sci-fi if you set your mind to it.
Marti_L said
I don’t like to watch horror movies because they give me HORRIBLE nightmares! Extremely vivid - I wake up screaming, disrupting the entire household.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
My dreams can be disturbing enough. They don’t need any help!

Amy LeForge said
Glenda - LOLOL I didn’t notice that! It’s completely deserved though.
Amy {waving madly} Hiya!
Liz, I remember seeing part of a television show that featured vampires when I was about 8…I had nightmares. Ugh. I never connected that with shyness though. Now you’ve got me thinking.
KatFrench said
Hullo all. Late to the party, I’m afraid.
Saw the new Star Trek movie last week. So to answer Mark’s ? in 35, I think if you consider it was a field commission during time of war… sure. Why not?
My mom was a huge trekkie, so I saw most if not all the original series growing up.
Probably my favorite part was hearing how “Bones” got his nickname.
--Deb said
So … back to sci-fi and not horror.
What DO you folks think about time travel? (grin)
(Hi, Amy Derby!)
Christa M. Miller said
Liz and Amy, I’m excessively shy, but I still love horror!
However, seeing as no one else here does (sci-fi or otherwise) and I need to pack, I believe I will sign off for the night. Enjoy the last of the discussion!

I generally don’t like time travel storylines–often a little too deus ex machina–but I liked it in the Trek movie (and Lost this season, for that matter).
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Amy L, post with the sordid details coming shortly!
--Deb said
Chuck! I love Chuck. (Which, if you follow me on twitter, you’ve probably figured out.) It’s only marginally sci-fi, and I adore it.
Joe Hauckes said
I like the old Dracula (Bella LaGossi) and Frankenstein (Boris Karloff) movies. I don’t really like the new generation of vampire movies though. They seem to be Gore for Gore’s sake.
The Goal Guru said
Interestingly, not much of a sci-fi buff, but love a good spooky movie, love to have the living daylights scared out of me. :0

ME Liz Strauss said
ooo Kat,
You are a Trekkie.
I don’t even remember how “Bones” got his nickname. I know I knew it once. I’m sure Joe does.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Amy D, how the heck are ya? I miss your hugs!
Marti_L said
Deb, I think time travel is a fascinating concept. This season “Lost” did a time travel story and there was tremendous debate on the message boards at Television Without Pity about it. The implications and paradoxes of alternate timelines versus “what happened always happened - you can’t change the past”.
ME Liz Strauss said
Jill,
You are much braver than I am. I’d be believing that the creepy thing was in the room with me long after the movie was over.
The Goal Guru said
I used to love watching Creature Feature as a kid. Anyone remember that?
Jill
KatFrench said
108. Marti
I love Chuck, although I rarely manage to catch it. And I’m a complete and total Lost nerd–they had me at “polar bear on a tropical island.”
I’m a sucker a good classic adventure-mystery-romance story.
If people are running through jungles and ruins being chased by bad guys or monsters and falling in love while seeking the answer to ancient mysteries, I’m a happy camper.
ME Liz Strauss said
Amy LeForge,
Consider this … allergies are “more” not “less” of something. They are an over-sensitivity to things like dust and pollen.
So maybe shyness has to do with “more” too … an overactive ability to imagine.
ME Liz Strauss said
Oh, Jill,
I thought the creature feature host was totally goofy.
--Deb said
Marti–the paradoxes of time travel are what make it so darn interesting! I remember a really bad movie from the 80s about a time travelling bike, ridden by a man with his great grandfather’s pocket watch–given to his great-grandmother just before he left her … and it turned out that he himself was his own great-grandfather. Which, even at 17, I saw coming. But I’ve always wondered–with that closed loop, where on earth did the watch COME from in the first place?
KatFrench said
119. Jill - I loved the Creature Feature! All the classic Universal monster movies, plus every so often they’d play “Creature from the Black Lagoon” or “Gorilla at Large” and you’d have to go to the convenience store to pick up your 3-D glasses.
Good times… good times.
Marti_L said
#119 The Good Guru - Yes I remember Creature Feature and all of those hosts/hostesses (Elvira - LOL) like that. Even those those movies were cheesy they scared the bejesus out of me.
Good point about shyness and sensitivity.
The Goal Guru said
Yes, host was goofy, all part of the charm.
Jill
Joe Hauckes said
Liz, yeah, “Saw”bones. Was a term used for Doctors since at least the Civil War.
And no allergies are “less’ of something “anti-hystemine” not more or is it more of hystemine and not less?
Amy said
Hi Amy and Deb and anyone else I missed who said hi to me.
Marti, re vampires… now that my last name is plastered all over the comments, I can’t answer the way I’d like to.
But as big of a fan of horror as I am, I’ve never gotten into vampire movies. The few I’ve seen were very silly and not scary at all. I only like very realistic scary movies.
Marti_L said
#123 Deb - Ah yes, this season the discussion about “Where did the compass originate?” RE: Lost has been fascinating!
Amy LeForge said
I’ve seen Eureka (love it) and caught Fringe once or twice, but I haven’t seen the rest of the shows mentioned. Can you believe it?? I’ve never watched Lost. I don’t know why.
Hey! What about Dr. Who? That’s a great time travel show. There was an episode about these statues that looked like angels but were really scary aliens. That one was great…edgy enough to be spooky but not horror.
Liz, wow what a great analogy. I wonder if an overactive imagination is common to shy people, and if that’s a cause (or even an effect) of shyness.
Amy said
Glenda, doing well. How are you? PS I used your ebook from SOBcon to make a few points to a room full of legal bloggers today. They were very impressed with what you had to say… even though you weren’t physically there to say it.
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
If a normal guy gets a nanodust particle in his nose, nothing happens. If an allergic person does, that person responds … it’s an oversensitivity — an over reaction.
Marti_L said
#120 Kat French - I had to chuckle when the campaign to renew Chuck was going on, I saw someone refer to it as a sci-fi show and it took me aback. I hadn’t ever thought of it as “sci-fi” (Duh on me - LOL)
KatFrench said
Did anybody else like The Twilight Zone or the Outer Limits? I liked how every episode was a self-contained story.
Come to think of it, one of my favorite TZ episodes was the one with Bill Shatner from Star Trek and the gremlin on the airplane…
Joe Hauckes said
Thank you Amy for mentioning Dr Who. I was waiting for someone to say something about it.
I remember the episode of which you speak; you had to continually look at the statues or they would move closer to you and attack.
--Deb said
Twilight Zone was too scary for me.
I’ve never seen a Dr. Who episode, either. But I adore Quantum Leap!
Marti_L said
The season finale of Fringe generated a lot of heat because they had the main character (Olivia) jump into an alternate universe where the Twin Towers were still standing. Some people thought that was offensive, others thought it was touching. Do y’all think it’s too soon to touch on 9/11, or was it is acceptable fiction/storytelling to use?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Amy, your fearless leader is rather worn out! Counting down to June 13th when I’m hoping to hide for a while.
Wow, I can imagine lawyers are a tough group to crack.
Amy said
Glenda, may I please come hide with you?
This group was actually very receptive…
--Deb said
Marti, I still think it’s a little too soon to use the Twin Towers as plot devices. Glimpses (like in the Life on Mars pilot last fall), I can deal with, but there’s a part of me that’s still not used to not being able to see them, and it seems disrespectful somehow. But again, it depends on HOW.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey, Kat,
I liked Twilight Zone better than Outer Limits. Sometimes sci-fi TV shows don’t have real endings. That bugs me.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
And then there’s Stargate, filmed here in Vancouver with Richard Dean Anderson, I think, although maybe not.
Joe Hauckes said
Related to the Twin Towers and unrelated to movies.
what did you think of the “photo-op” fiasco.
NOT telling New Yorkers they were going to do it? DUMB!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Amy, you’re most welcomed. Spaceship leaves June 13th for destinations unknown.
Amy LeForge said
Glenda are you going on a vacation? I hope it’s to someplace wonderful. I would choose my house with no one in it except the food delivery people and my Hubby.
Speaking of my Hubby he just mentioned the Stargate series. Anybody else mad that those ended? And what did you think of Battlestar Galactica?
Amy said
Glenda, if you navigate as well in space as you do in downtown Chicago then I’m there.
--Deb said
Okay, got to go pretend to do other things for a while (grin). (I’m not exactly being my most productive tonight.)
The Goal Guru said
Great chatting w/you beautiful people tonight. Sweet dreams lovelies…

Marti_L said
I always liked Twilight Zone because of the twist endings. I’m a sucker for those
I’m still torn on the use of the Twin Towers in “Fringe”. I think it was easier to see them in “Life on Mars” because it was a landmark showing that the main character had time-traveled backwards. But portraying an alternate universe where the WTC is STILL standing…I can’t decide if it’s too early or not.
Marti_L said
G’night Jill. Delightful chatting with you!

Terrific conversation tonight!
Thanks to everyone, especially Liz for being such a delightful hostess!
I’ll be toddling off now, have to wake up the boy for his night job, and line up husband’s evening meds.
Joe, although I don’t always comment on it, I always come back to read your poem, and they always make me smile
Peace and joy to all!

Hi guys, I don’t get to check in here on Tuesday nights often, but I do enjoy it.
I still have that scene of ET riding in the basket of a bicycle in front of the full moon in my mind after all these years. I haven’t seen that movie since I was a kid, but I sure loved it.

Horror or Science seems to rule the night
With questions of shows we watch with delight
Scary and Weird are all the rage
Spooky and Time Travel take the stage
Doctors and Captains and Vampires do rule
What would happen if they all would duel?
We may never know the answer to that question
But someone will write it with nary a suggestion
No Klondikes were offered for our guests
So, here all, Catch! as I throw you our Best.

Hi Todd!
Always great to have you stop by. My son saw ET for the first time this weekend. Those his initials … I always called him my “little alien child.” I love that movie too.
