The Mic is On: We’re Talking Star Trek, Star Wars, Sci Fi Night

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 6:58 pm

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

The Mic Is On

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

Let’s Boldy Go …

Some nights on the interwebs can seem like we’ve embarked on the last frontier. Why not boldly go one step further and explore the explorer of science fiction world?
We might talk about

NIX photo, robot arm over Earth

NIX photo, robot arm over Earth

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)

Oh, and bring example links.

Hi everyone. I’m a long time Star Trek fan and I finally saw the new movie last Thursday. It took a healthy suspension of disbelief and a willingness to let something new unfold, but I really enjoyed the movie despite its faults. It was definitely the funnest Star Trek movie in many years.

Here’s a question for you all, which I’ll try to keep as spoiler free for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie: do you think that James T. Kirk deserved what he got at the end of the movie?

Liz, I’ve been watching all the ST’s since the beginning, they have no real order to me anymore.
If you have the time, start from the first season first episode (1966) all the others don’t really matter what order until you get to TNG then start with the first episode, then it really doesn’t matter.
And if you really have the time, watch all the ST movies in order, then the TNG movies in order, then finish with Generations.
Enterprise, DS9, Voyager are only there to expand on the original concept so whatever whenever, it doesn’t matter.

Zombies for me represent the ultimate loss of humanity, which is why the Romero films portrayed them so well. Vampires can still talk and think. Zombies, not so much.

As for sci-fi/horror crossover, though, how about the classics from the 1950s — notably “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” a great analogy for communism? (Or, for that matter, all the takeoffs that Mystery Science Theater 3000 did on those? LOL)

Vampires are horror, so far as I’m concerned. (The very idea gave me nightmares when I was a kid.) Buffy’s mix of humor and vampire is entertaining, but vampires definitely fall under “horror” to me.

Sci-fi is about, um, SCIENCE fiction. Time travel (love time travel). Aliens. Space travel. Vampires are from the dark, monster-under-the-bed psyche fear.

Ooooo, you’ve had such a great discussion while I was gone putting boys and laundry to bed. :) Glenda, I was shocked (!!) that Batman’s bathroom was so poorly designed. Why didn’t they have a button for an automatic opener?

I hate horror too. The only truly frightening movies I’ve ever watched were by accident. And I really dislike being frightened. Why would I pay money for that?

I think one of the great things about Sci-Fi in general is the freedom to tell a good story. Being able to bend reality’s rules allows for some fantastic creativity.

Marti–the paradoxes of time travel are what make it so darn interesting! I remember a really bad movie from the 80s about a time travelling bike, ridden by a man with his great grandfather’s pocket watch–given to his great-grandmother just before he left her … and it turned out that he himself was his own great-grandfather. Which, even at 17, I saw coming. But I’ve always wondered–with that closed loop, where on earth did the watch COME from in the first place?

Hey! What about Dr. Who? That’s a great time travel show. There was an episode about these statues that looked like angels but were really scary aliens. That one was great…edgy enough to be spooky but not horror.

Liz, wow what a great analogy. I wonder if an overactive imagination is common to shy people, and if that’s a cause (or even an effect) of shyness.

The season finale of Fringe generated a lot of heat because they had the main character (Olivia) jump into an alternate universe where the Twin Towers were still standing. I’m still torn on the use of the Twin Towers in “Fringe”. I think it was easier to see them in “Life on Mars” because it was a landmark showing that the main character had time-traveled backwards.
