What I Like about Airplanes
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:37 am
It’s the ultimate 30,000 view reality. I look out the window and notice that perception isn’t always reality.
I wonder whether the folks in the dark parts of town realize that the sun is shining a few neighborhoods over. Do you suppose the folks in the sunlit neighborhoods think about the parts of town that can’t see the sun?
My guess is they don’t think about each other.
Sunshine, traffic jams, economic situations, social media conversations — we tend to think what we experience is what is happening everywhere.
That’s why I like airplanes. They remind me to look for the bigger picture.

Liz,
Right on. There is a bigger picture than our own little world. Thanks for the tip, will keep looking for it.

Ah, but the ones on the right side of the airplane have a different view than those on the left.
What a stunning picture you have up there– where did you take that/find it?

Flying over the city, especially at night, makes me wonder what all the people do?? Puts my worries in perspective and reminds me there is a great big world out there that’s ready to buy stuff.

Hi Liz,
What a great way to start the day, getting outside of ourselves and thinking about the big picture.

You always find the most interesting way of looking at things, Liz. Even when you’re just looking at things!
I feel a sense of freedom when I fly. I see the little “Matchbox” cars that somehow now run automatically. I look at the clouds and want to walk on them. It gets my imagination going by bringing out my child-like curiosity.

Hi David!
It was such fun to find that picture out a perfectly unscratched airplane window. I couldn’t help but have thoughts about the people on the ground. How often do we forget the 30,000 foot view?

Hi Karen,
Love your point that the folks on the right side of the plane see something different.
I took the picture flying into Seattle last Thursday.

Hi Beth!
New perspectives always get my day going in a positive fashion. They make feel like I have something great to start with.

The view from planes always makes my own problems seem smaller because I realize how tiny we all are in the scheme of things and how many of us are “down here” going through the same stuff.

Hi Sage,
My problems seem smaller and more distant. For that time that I’m in the air, I have a chance to look at them from a place where I’m not standing inside them. It helps a lot.

Hi George,
Isn’t interesting how curiosity undoes the emotional power of problems? When we get curious, we let go of the part that worries us. We can play until we find a solution. That’s part of why I like airplanes.

I know what you mean, James.
It’s a little like remembering that each day is a new one. Just now you reminded me that someone is flying over me at this minute.

Interesting take on things. I guess it would be wonderful to see 30,000 at the same time. I guess it’s too bad that I hate flying. It just scares me to death.
