Questions to Get Closer to Your Brand: Question 1

Questions to Get Closer to Your Brand
This is a series of questions, I don’t know how many. They are the ones I ask when I help folks get closer to their brand.
When you talk to your friends, what do you talk most about?
I’ll answer first to get things started.
What do you notice about my comment?

When I talk to my friends, we talk about
how people think, how they act, relationships,
creativity, philosophy, problem solving, dreams, humanity, big ideas, how to change the world, and unconditional love.
Karin H. said
With most friends we talk about ‘how things are going’ - everyone has little/big problems once in a while and it’s a bit of ‘catching up’ with all situations, good and bad.
Then we talk about the future

ME Strauss said
Hi Karin!
How things are going. . . . sounds like you like to be in the moment. Is that so?
ME Strauss said
Oh GP!
What does that remind me of?
Hmmm . . . there’s a place on the web that looks like montana and horses where the Big G looks in from the Big Sky and thoughts of the journey ahead show up once in a while.

We usually talk about the music we’re hearing, the movies we’re seeing, the books we’re reading, the thoughts we’ve been having, how the world may work, what we’ve been doing, and how it’s been affecting us.
To answer your question - your response sounds like your writing. There you go again - getting me to think.
ME Strauss said
Hi Rick,
Your response sounds a lot like the guy that I meet on your blog. Thoughts we’ve having, how the world may work . . .
I can’t help myself. I like the way you think.

I really like this question, Liz…it makes me think.
When I talk with friends, conversation tends toward social justice, politics, relationships, pets/animals.
ME Strauss said
Hi Tammy!
I think it’s important to know who we are to get to who we want to be and those two things are really crucial to a brand that is deeply authentic.
Wow! Those topics sure sound like who you are.
Tammy said
Liz, I can’t wait to see more of your questions, because I’m really drawn to your idea that brand should be authentic in a deeply personal way in addition to what we want to be known for in business.

Me, me, me! And a smile. Because you know me better than that. But for those who don’t: I first bring my soul, on a silver plate, so they understand I “come in peace.” And then I share a dream, one of the many… because I know I have to open the door. And then… the river flows. I’m quiet and listen. I catch their dreams and I write them down, for later, when the right time comes to transform them.
ME Strauss said
Hi Tammy,
If we can tie our nature to our brand then we can live our brand in a real sense. We will be fully expressed in what we are doing. There will be no self-promotion, only talking about what we believe in.
ME Strauss said
Hi Mihaela!
You don’t just talk about you. I know that. Your soul is something special you bring to the table to the work you do. Imagine living your brand, but then you already do that.

I ask how they are doing first. Then, since most own businesses, I ask how their business is doing. Since most know I just published a book on business they want to know when I can get them a signed copy. I am my brand, I do believe.

We’ve just graduated a couple of years ago, and I’m still in university doing my Master’s so when we meet up, my friends and I talk mostly about (their) relationships, jobs (read: bosses), and up-coming weddings.
I rarely talk to them about my research and the problems I encounter because:
(1) they don’t understand what conservation is,
(2) I don’t want them to pity me because I’m still “studying”.
ME Strauss said
Oh Pelf,
Does that mean that you don’t talk about what your passion is? . . . that you don’t get to put your whole self into your conversation?
I wouldn’t pity you because you’re studying. Be jealous, maybe.
KidBlogger said
Glad you asked
Well most of the time, we talk about games, girls and goof heads (The 3 G’s) What could you expect? I’m just a kid!
ME Strauss said
Hi KidBlogger!
I like kids! I think those are great things to think about!

Ah Liz you are an inspiration on a rainy sunday eve. When I talk amongst friends we mostly talk about dreams and schemes. We fantasize about what the world will look like when our dreams have taken on more shape. We talk about what we do today to get there. The word ‘Just imagine if’ and then very soon it translates to ‘just wait and see when…’.
Wow, thanks for putting this smile on my face AGAIN.
Pelf: people who don’t understand sometimes can come up with the most surprising solutions and creative input. If you let them. And if they don’t it might be time to broaden the horizon.
ME Strauss said
Hi Sanne!
How nice to bring some relief on a rainy day.
It sounds like I would so enjoy a conversation with you and your friends. I love tales and talk of possibilities.
Smiles are great gifts. I’m so smiling to thing I brought you one!

Hey Liz,
I talk about how we can make a name around the globe rather than just sitting at work. It takes not only lot of time but you are not independent.
I talked about this to my dad and said him, I want to make a name in the world of internet and he said ” You know whats you motive in life”

ME Strauss said
Hi Ashish!
That is so you and so what you are about. It’s wonderful to hear your father in the subject that is your passion.

We talk about the latest in tech and tech trends, with a sadly large focus on Apple.
We talk a lot about social networking, including new networks, tools, and uses.
So, yes, this is in line with my ‘brand’, though you don’t always realize it.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Todd!
Welcome! Great to see you here!
It sounds as if you know exactly who you are and what you love doing.
isabella mori said
as always, you stir up thoughts!
health has become a big topic, partly because my two closest friends have severe health issues. we also talk a lot about how we communicate with others. and we try to understand people we don’t understand. if that makes sense
ME Liz Strauss said
hi Isabella,
I know how the issues of the moment take over conversation. Similar things have happened to me these past few days.
Understanding people we don’t understand has been a theme here too. Maybe it comes up whenever difficult things happen.
I keep catching my breath to think about what I love doing . . . can’t lose sight of that.
isabella mori said
you know, what you just said about catching your breath re what you love doing … it reminds me of something i have asked my support group to remind me of every time we meet:
“delight is better than worry”
ME Liz Strauss said
Thank you, Isabella!
Thank you for saying that.

I think it depends on which friends I am with. Closer friends we talk about the more personal stuff in our lives such as problems, hopes, dreams and ambitions (things you may feel are a little too silly to talk to others about but your closer friends will understand). To every friend, family, work, hobbies, politics all come into conversation.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Sarah!
The topics we talk about most often with our friends are often the ones we know most about and could very well be our passions.
