She was at the top of her game. She was a lawyer who traveled all over the country, handling big shopping mall real estate deals. She had four young children, a terrific nanny, an easy-going husband, and a family proud of her achievements.

But what no one knew was that she was an addict.

The details of the blogger and content in question is a bit vague, but this is not the first time, nor the last, that international courts have made a sweeping judgment against WordPress.com due to the actions of an individual blogger.

Chris Brogan is reporting on the qualifications of a social media expert.
There are lots of people throwing “social media expert” out there. Hell, I had it as part of my “about” on my blog, but I’ve chosen to just say that I advise people. It’s more accurate, because expertise is fairly darned fleeting out there right now.

Thanks for the inclusion, Liz. This is an issue that applies to everyone across the board. If a court can dictate blocking a huge group of bloggers without justification, what’s next? It’s something that has bothered me for a long time and I’m really thrilled people are finally talking about this.

I’m also amazed at how many people are saying “There’s nothing we can do about it.” They use excuses such as living in a country outside of the one involved, imposing America’s will on another country, and other excuses. Amazing.

We’re a global village here on the web and what goes on in one country impacts everywhere - and we have a right to talk about it. We also have a right to help implement change when and where we can. I do hope that post has lit some fires around the world to get people thinking “worldly” so thanks for highlighting it.

Thanks for including my post, Liz. With the increasingly bad news about the economy right now, I think we’ve all got to be on the lookout for people we care about, and the fact they may really be suffering. Just because someone is well-educated and well paid doesn’t mean they don’t have the same vulnerabilities as the rest of us mortals.

    Hey Lorelle!
We have to be aware of what’s happening. I agree. If we don’t pay attention, it could be happening in more places than there.

I don’t believe in imposing our will on other countries, but I also don’t think that means that we don’t talk about what’s not good with the world.

    Hi Anita!
I found your article compelling for the very reason that it wasn’t typical . . . except that it’s more typical than we probably know. Thanks for sharing the story. We’re all vulnerable to how hard things can get.
