Don’t Buy that New Domain Name Yet

Marc Macalua of Macalua.com wanted to add some information to our discussion about the changes at Google with regard to what is being called the “aging process.” He shared his document explaining the logic of buying a used domain name rather than starting out with a spanking new one.

I Have a Name Already. Thank You.
I’m sure you do, and I’m sure it’s a fine one . . . or maybe it isn’t. As culturally literate members of the community, we should know why old domain names are in such demand. Besides, one day you or a friend will face the question of whether to change a blog’s name, and we need to know everything that comes with making that decision.

Spammers Ruined Things for Everyone
In order to combat spammers, Google’s new algorithms have added values biased toward long-timers. Marc explains how established domains have significant advantages in terms of

  • bypassing the 6-8 month aging delay
  • having a headstart in page rank
  • positioning bonuses, such as listing in the DMOZ

This is a complete how-to document that you’ll want to keep track of. It’s an easy read, so go for it. Then come back, and lets talk about it. I can’t help but think that everyone, but the most guerrilla SEO marketers, will find something here that you didn’t know before.

Thanks Marc, for bringing this to our attention, and with such perfect timing. It fits right in with what we’ve been talking about. I appreciate you adding your expertise to the conversation. That’s a community gesture if I’ve ever seen one.

Enjoy Marc’s article. I know I did.

Oh and remember if you don’t come back soon, I might be out finding a new, old domain name for Successful Blog. After all, it is a way of social climbing. Change your name and get what comes with it. Let’s see. Hmmmm . . . I wonder if IvanaTrump.com is available yet . . . not that one. Okay then . . .
