How To Announce Your New Blog Post In Your Twitter?

charles wrote this at 8:14 am

This is a how-to post.  I’ll keep this post simple.

Background

I think I am a lazy person actually.  Whenever I write a blog post, I know that the next thing I must do is to tweet about it in my Twitter account so that I can let my followers know.  Such a task can be leveraged to the computer to help us do it since it is just telling our twitter followers about our new blog post.

Requirements

  1. You must be using a WordPress platform.
  2. You must be an administrator in order to configure this properly.
  3. It is ok if you are using the free wordpress.com platform, or if you have installed wordpress in your own domain name.

Let’s get it started!

Step 1: You will need to download “Twitter tools“.

Step 2: Unzip the contents of the entire folder “twitter-tools” and upload into your wp-content/plugins/ directory. (You’ll need to know how to use FTP)

Step 3: Go to the Plugins page in your WordPress Administration area and click ‘Activate’ for Twitter Tools.

Step 4: Go to the Twitter Tools Options page (Options > Twitter Tools) to set your Twitter account information and preferences as shown in the screenshot below.

This is my way of tweeting automatically after adding my new post.  What other methods have you used?

    I use tweet-u-later.com. I can schedule tweets to it will repost in different time zones when I want it. This helps me capture different audiences in different parts of the world.

    I was trying to figure out which plugin this was. So thanks.
    Do you think it is better to tweet the link with your own words instead of it saying :Blog Post and the link?
    I’ve been debating that in my head.

    I’m even lazier I guess. On all my Typepad blogs I have added Feedburner’s FeedFlare. The minute I publish a new post I view it - see the Twit-this link underneath the post and click ;-) Instant tweet

    (And then when my AWeber blog broadcast picks up the new post I add the AWeber tweet automation - the minute the blog-alert is sent it again appears as a tweet)

    Told you: lazy ;-)

    Awesome, awesome, awesome!

    I am a very recalcitrant Tweeter but something like this should help me a lot, thanks.

    I always update my Twitter manually. Once my new blog post is finished, I go to bit.ly and shorten my URL. Bit.ly can track how many times the link was clicked allowing great info on how many people your tweet reached out to.

    I tried TwitterTools but I did not like the way the auto tweets looked. I always lead my blog tweets with a question (or at least something jazzy) that will be answered on the blog post. Another great thing about manually tweeting is that you can use @s and #s to bring in new people that are interested in the topic. It is a little more work but I think the personal touches really pay off.

    I told you I never comment on you posts but have been a reader of you blog for a long time now. I guess really, I am just lazy, too. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation. I will give Twitter Tools a try.

    I use http://twitterfeed.com/. It simply reads my RSS feed and tweets the posts.

    Hello Charles,

    The method of using Twitter Tools is a compromise between maximum effectiveness and ease.

    The issue is that the title of your blog post should be optimized for SEO and your Tweet optimized for your audience. These often require different tactics, wording and styles.

    To maximize traffic it is most likely better to craft a unique tweet that may or may not include your blog post title or a portion thereof.

    Just some food for thought.

    :) Andrew

    Sorry guys for the late replies. I was held up by my work recently. :)

    @Stefan
    I’ve just tried Tweet-U-Later. It’s a great tool to time my tweets! Been looking for such a tool. Thanks for the recommendation. But one thing, it doesn’t provide a real time posting of your blog post to twitter. How do you do that?

    @Blanca_Stella
    For sure, it is better to tweet yourself. It’s much more personal to your followers if you re-write it in your own ways.

    I think it’s because my way of tweeting is somehow looking like the title of a blog post. I’ll get more personal when I am tweeting about what I am doing right then.

    I guess… to each with their own style of tweeting… So long as you are providing a value, your followers will be happy to be with you.

    @Karin_H
    That’s an interesting method you have adopted! Thanks for sharing for Typepad platform! Oh yes, we are all lazy people who just want to make business simple. :)

    @Phillip_Roman
    Thanks for sharing! I’m sure that you are very personal to your followers. While I am trying to be personal in all ways, I didn’t think of doing it that way that you have mentioned.

    @Ben
    Thanks bro for reading my blog for quite a while now.. I’m glad that you have “awaken the giant” within you so that I can get to know your existence. :)

    @Scott_Porad
    That’s a good way of tweeting your new posts! I’ve only used that to share my RSS reads at http://www.google.com/reader/shared/charleslau

    @Andrew_Mueller
    Thanks Andrew for your input. I am really glad to hear your opinion about this. You’re right about the two different target audience whom I should optimize towards. In fact, @Phillip_Roman is also mentioning how he optimizes it for his readers. It’s for sure a compromise between ease and effectiveness. Let me think about it… whether I should start to wake up from my “laziness” :)

    Thanks for all your insightful comments! :)
