I find the outriggers going at full throttle a fascinating example of how a successful team effort will not only mean that some have to “dig deep”, as the sports commentators say, and lift their effort, but the stronger ones, the stars if you will, have to modulate and measure their effort so as not to throw the whole show out of whack. From another sport, Phil Jackson’s Sacred Hoops: Spiritual Lessons of a Hardwood Warrior is a terrific read on coaching teams with great stars in them to play and succeed *as teams* and in no way diminishing the stars – what the blurb on the cover refers to as “the higher wisdom of teamwork”.
