Know if Someone Screenshots Your Instagram Story

How to Know if Someone Screenshots Your Instagram Story?

March 19, 2026 by Jessy Troy

You post an instagram story thinking it will quietly disappear after 24 hours, but what if someone screenshots this?

It’s not just about being seen. It’s about something being saved without your knowledge, taken out of that fleeting space you intended it to live in. I think many of us, especially women, feel this a little more deeply.

So How to Know if Someone Screenshots Your Instagram Story? Here is what I found.

Does Instagram Send Notifications for Story Screenshots?

Spoiler alert, it doesn’t.

This is the part most of us certainly hope has a different answer. I remember the first time I actually looked it up. I was almost expecting Instagram to quietly notify me, like a small sense of control in a very public space.

But unfortunately, Instagram will not tell you if someone screenshots your story. No alert, no message, nothing in your notifications. Once you post something, there is really no way to track what someone chooses to do with it on their end.

That’s when you start realizing that stories disappear from your profile, but not necessarily from someone else’s phone.

I know, it sounds a bit unsettling. But it is also a gentle reminder to you to be mindful of what you share online.

Can You See Who Viewed Your Instagram Story?

Can you See Who Viewed Your Instagram Story

Yes, you can see who viewed your story. All you have to do is swipe up while your story is still live, and a list of names appears.

And I won’t lie, I have checked that list more times than I probably should have. There is something oddly personal about it, seeing exactly who pauses, even for a second, to look at something you have shared.

But here is the catch. That list only tells you who saw the story, and not what they did with it. You don’t know if someone watched casually, replayed it, or quietly took a screenshot.

Does Instagram Notify Screenshots in Disappearing Photos or DMs?

If you send a disappearing photo or video in a direct message, and the other person takes a screenshot, you will be notified. It’s a simple alert, but enough to let you know that what you sent did not stay as private as you thought.

And I will be honest, that does feel a bit reassuring. Especially when you are sharing something a bit more personal, something meant for just one person and not the whole world.

Social Media Apps That Notify When You Screenshot a Story

This is where things get a little interesting, because not all apps work like Instagram.

Some platforms actually do let you know when someone takes a screenshot. And the most well-known example is Snapchat.

Here is a comparison table of most popular apps and their screenshot notification policy.

AppStory Screenshots Notified?Chat Screenshots Notified?Special Conditions
Snapchat✅ Yes✅ YesNotifies for snaps, stories, chats, and screen recordings
Instagram❌ No⚠️ Only sometimesNotifies only for disappearing DMs (Vanish Mode)
Facebook❌ No⚠️ LimitedAlerts only in disappearing messages (Messenger Vanish Mode)
WhatsApp❌ No❌ NoNo notifications at all; some content may be blocked instead
Telegram❌ No⚠️ LimitedNotifications only in Secret Chats (mainly iOS)
Signal❌ No❌ NoCan block screenshots entirely via screen security
TikTok❌ No❌ NoNo screenshot alerts for content or profiles
X (Twitter)❌ No❌ NoNo screenshot notifications at all

On Snapchat, if someone screenshots your chat,  story, or even a snap you have sent, you will get a clear notification. It makes the whole experience more transparent and makes the user feel more comfortable.

I remember thinking, why doesn’t Instagram do the same?

But then again, every platform has its own rules and way of handling privacy.

Using apps like Snapchat makes you more aware of how things could be. And once you see that, it’s hard not to wish for a little more clarity everywhere else, too.

Third-party Apps that claim to Detect Screenshots

Apps that promise to reveal who screenshots your Instagram story sound convincing, but they don’t actually work in reality. Instagram does not provide this kind of data to outside services.

The bigger concern is safety. Many such apps ask you to log in with your Instagram details, which can expose your account to hacking or misuse.

If an app promises something Instagram itself doesn’t offer, then it is better to stay away from such apps and protect your account.

Tricks People Use to Screenshot Stories without Being Noticed

No one really says this loud, but if someone wants to save your story, it is not that difficult.

I have heard people using a second phone to take pictures on the screen. It sounds a bit old school, but it gets the job done. Then there is the airplane mode trick, where you can open the story, turn off the internet, take a screenshot, and go back as if nothing happened. While some people even just screen record to save your stories without even thinking twice.

What’s strange is how normal all of this has become.

Privacy Settings You Should Use on Instagram

Instagram offers a few simple things that actually help. You can hide your story from certain people, from whom you would like to hide your personal side. I have done it a couple of times without making a big deal out of it. The “Close Friends” list is another one I really like. It feels a bit more personal, like you are sharing with people who get you. And keeping your account private gives that extra sense of control over who is even allowed in.

But if I am completely honest, I learned to pause for a second before posting if I wouldn’t be okay with the photos I shared being saved somewhere.
