The Markey Amendment says that telecommunication and cable giants like AT&T and Verizon that provide broadband access have the obligation “not to block, impair, degrade, discriminate against, or interfere with the ability of any person to use a broadband connection to access, use, send, receive, or offer lawful content, applications, or services over the Internet.” The House Committee votes on the amendment today.
As it stands, the bill introduces the Federal Communications Commission to the issue requiring the FCC to address Net Neutrality complaints and levy fines of $500,000 against those found in violation.
Save the Internet.com, House Committee Vote Results: The Momentum Shifts in Our Favor
Ok, so the vote on the Markey amendment to protect the internet has happened, and it was voted down, 34-22. That is a big deal. Itââ¬â¢s too bad we lost the vote, but we expected that loss. What we did not expected was the narrow margin. By way of comparison, the subcommittee vote was 23-8, which means we should have gotten blown out of the water.

oh well … step #1 has been achieved: house committee rejected amendements. Next stop is Congress later this year.
Seems only 1 Rep voted with us and surprisingly 5 Dems are all for killing off net neutrality.
Still think there’s enough time for some massive ground-swell from the internet community to scream and shout this down. I read the petition got to 250,000 – add a zero or two and things could be much different.
Aren’t there mid-terms coming up? Every internet user in the U.S. should lobby/harrass their local rep.
I’m trying to keep an eye on this. It seems to be taking on some noise, but I don’t know how long that’s going to last. You know this fast food culture. We have short attention spans. 🙁
It’s scary to think that this might actually go through.
It truly is scary. That’s why I’m following it. It’s not my way to report on such things, but I can’t stand by and watch something happening without at least making sure that other folks can see what’s going on.
Liz,
“short attention spans” – that’s exactly the way I see it ‘s going to happen (and I’ll put my hand up here as well). There’ll be a big huff and puff now until we move onto the next thing probably by next week.
The long process this goes through – sub-com, house comm, house of rep, senate… together with the fact the legislation is wrapped up with much more than net neutrality means it’ll be dragged out a long time, with thousands of pages, submissions etc., and that’s even before congress has a go at it. I’m starting to get bored with it already 🙂
Sadly, Martin,
I see the corollary in business collaboration–when two companies work together the one with the more beauracray and approval stages always wins. That enterprise beats down the other, kills all of the solid good ideas, until in the end the small more virant player just give up in defeat and horror.
So us small vibrant players are kidding ourselves in fighting the big battle. Doesn’t matter if there’s 250,000. petitioners, 2,500,000 or 25,000,000 … the die has essentially been cast.
I guess we just have to deal with it when/if/whatever happens.
I’m not willing to give up hope yet. I’ve got a quote from a congresswoman today I like.
There could be a thing in the world that does go right. It happens every decade or so.
I love what your doing toward Net Neutrality and I want to encourage you all to check out the web program web.illish.us. It is geared toward encouraging people to joining the fight for net neutrality.
