For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week, I USUALLY offer a Blogging Hypothetical Question.
This one’s for real.
Here you go. . . .
What community service might the NEW and IMPROVED Successful Blog offer you? Should the focus be more on the SUCCESSFUL and less on the BLOG? Or is that right as it is?
We can take this blog in a world of directions as long as we stick to three words–success, community, and readers.
You’ve passed me some fabulous ideas earlier that I’m working on, and I’ve come up with a few of my own. But I want to unroll this new version really right.
We have a chance to make something unique here–something outstanding that makes your life easier–a community blog that actually does something for you.
What a concept! What might that something be?
–ME “Liz” Strauss
First – I really like the new design…better than the old one by far. Not that the old one was bad, just that this one appeals more to me…by far.
Next – I’m in the middle of negotiations to take on the marketing efforts for 2 physical products, both golf related, in the next month or so, so I’m paring down all the blogs I read. The only one’s I’m keeping are going to offer real advice about the subject matter, not touchy feely, real world advice.
This blog can continue to do that, as it has done thus far, by moving ever so slightly towards success.
Your other blog ( biz.erati ) is a winner and exceeds that criteria…by far.
Thanks Mike,
I don’t blame you for the suggestion for moving nore toward the word success. That was a loaded question that was prompted by my thinking that the group who hangs out here might prefer more of that.
I’m also looking for how I might sift through some of those blogs that you’re reading for you to find the good stuff and save you some time.
What might you think about that?
Liz
I’m one of those control freak, type-A people who doesn’t even trust himself, so I doubt that I would be able to let go of that task.
When I read a post, I sometimes read a post that links to a post that links to a post that links to a post….
I do have plans to look for an editor for some e-material in the next several months. I have public domain material that needs to be updated and restated. I was thinking that someone like you would be the ideal kind of partner on some of those types of ventures. I’ll be getting to those around mid-February, maybe sooner, but not by much. Whattaya think ?
Hi Mike,
Around mid-February sounds like a good time for that kind of work, but not much sooner. I just finished chapter 3 of the MIT book.
I’m thinking of turning the SOB page into more of a directory, putting a description of each of your blogs. Then maybe every Friday offering a link to your best post of the week. You guys have such great blogs that would save you the time of traveling around to find each other–We could publish an SOB digest right here. That’s kind of what I was talking about.
Liz
Sounds good, but I’ll still need an editor for some e-material in February-March. I’ll hope you have time to make some money.
Hey, Mike,
I’ll always make time to do work for you.
Let me know when, where, and how many. I’ll be there.
smiles,
Liz
Gotta put my hand up and say that I also prefer this new design, Liz – although is that the longest tagline I’ve seen so far (21 words) 馃檪
SOB listings as a directory and a Friday best of … posts – I like it very much. You’ve hit the mark on the community angle.
One thing though, how much links are enough. If everyone who is a SOB expects a link to a post it might make for overload. It would take a little weekly work but I’d go for putting all the SOB feeds in your rss reader and every week scaning through them and picking say, 10 posts that are most intune with Successful Blog.
some name ideas:
SOB’s Weekly Roundup
Best Of … SOB’s
Weekend Reading by SOB’s
Dang it, Martin ! Why do you always have such good ideas 馃槈
Maybe the directory should show the SOB’s and their latest post or three. I know Chris Pearson can facilitate that.
I like the roundup idea. I love rodeo’s ! 馃槈
Okay Guys,
If I’m hearing you right–that tag up there wasn’t going to stay quite that size by the way . . .
1. Pick a few choice readings by a few choice SOBs every week for the SOB Cafe or Rodeo. 馃檪
2. Get the SOB directory up and running. Which means to me we really need to know more about everyone’s blogs.
Liz
You can see one implementation of using others feeds as a directory at Chris’ bloglouisville.com.
All you need is their feed and find the format you want.
Make that BlogMedia boywonder do some work…instead of shooting craps with KFed in Vegas !
I hear ya, Mike.
Don’t worry. My cowboy friend is working hard. You can count on that.
smiles,
Liz
utoh – New and Improved Services – you know I can’t resist!
[A] Well, I know I’m sick of these new designs that don’t link their masthead picture to the root of the blog .. I read 100% from bloglines, and if it’s interesting (to get me to participate in your community!) I like to click on the link and come to site directly, click on the header, look around, etc … When there’s no link on the top graphic, it’s like saying .. ‘Click the “X” instead Hart!’
[B] And, who cares if the tagline is 21 words? I would be more concerned that one of the words is made-up and doesn’t exist in the human language.. (i.e. spelling error! – per http://m-w.com ) It’s one of those laughable moments, like the “SCTV skit” .. You know the one .. with Walter Cronkite and Late Night $Dialing For Dollar$ skit …(pronounced “sdialing” not “dialing”)

[C] Nothing much else to say, except although I liked the old design – i like this one better because it’s centered :p ,, If you go with these ‘PAGES’ or new sections, or pages .. I would put some buttons at the top, just below the header for functionality.
Take care!
PS: .. it’s not like I was a stickler for proper grammar and such .. HELL NO .. I just didn’t know what that word meant, and had to look it up!
Hey HART,
The letters were so big I could read them. I didn’t type them either. I learned a long time ago they’re just words. They’re not me. But that’s one gotcha for sure. I shoulda caught it and didn’t. Too many messy things around here making me crazy. . .
and that, Your Honor is why I did it.
CASE DISMISSED.
Whew! I feel much better now that I’ve used that portable electro-shock machine.
I really like your Merriam-Webster impression, HART. You should think about doing stand up with it. 馃檪
I’m right with you on the clicking header and the buttons at the top.
Liz
That’s a good thing to have for these late nights.. a portabel electro-shock machine .. Why, it would be ‘irreverantalischus’ ~ !
Hey, HART,
I read how you typed portable and thought portabello mushroom and the picture I got in my head was hilarious. Quite fun to wake up to.
Hows business? H
ey I don’t think you’ve been moderated yet. You should try this blog out. I bet it won’t happen.
Liz
How’s business? I’ll give you my standard quote .. “Working hard … or hardly working!” What happened here? I make one little comment about one little spelling mistake, and now there is a new header, there’s no more blogging on this blog.. You would think I wield a lot of power in my words .. “OoooooOOoOooOoooOOoOoo”
Hi HART!
“You are indeed a powerful person,” she said with a big Cheshire cat grin. I have many plans up my sleeve here. Wait til you see what’s in store for you. 馃檪
