about how we mark time.

Yesterday way my son’s birthday.
Two weeks ago he started his first job after college.
In May, he graduated.
We mark such big events. Weddings, birthdays, graduations. Births. Deaths.
But we live our lives in the time in between.
This weekend as travel to work a project,
I’m going to remember . . .
that it’s the in between I value most,
that’s it’s the in-btween I find myself wishing back.

Congratulations, Liz. This is a significant milestone for you!
I’m sure it’s bittersweet, but also very satisfying to know for certain that that little bird can FLY!
Thanks JF!
It’s a delight to know that he’s happy! π
Hi Liz
Funny, extraordinary you should post this now!
For this weekend we’ve planned a quadruple ‘birthday’ celebration because we’ve been working very hard for the last 7 year ‘in-between-time’.
Partner Ton turns 50, I turn 45.5, our businesses turns 4 and our showroom 2.
This weekend we take a big pause from the ‘in-between-time’ to celebrate the result of that same ‘in-between-time’ we’ve come to value.
(And are bracing ourselves for the Dutch invasion that will land in our garden tomorrow π

Hi Liz,
Congratulations! Nice way of saying it π
But why wish back inbetweens? Longing for the past is fruitless (it’ll never happen again), cherishing fond memories of it is a beautiful thing to do in the present. Isn’t it wonderful that we as human beings have the power to relive the past in our minds?
Your thoughts reminded me of a post by Paulo Coelho titled “Manual for conserving paths”. I thought you might like it, it can be applied in so many ways in our lives.

Liz, this is really poignant…
Those in between times are the times I certainly value most. That’s always where the best ideas come from, the ones that have nothing to do with work, but with life.
Don’t miss ’em, whatever you do!
Liz –
I’ve long said that we seem to live our lives from one event to the next (holidays, vacations, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.) and forget to enjoy the part in between that got us there.
Thanks for the reminder.

Hi Karin!
I was already on my way to the airport when your comment came in. . . Happy Birthday to everyone!! How cool! Have a wonderful weekend filled with wishes coming true!
No worries, Lodewijkvdb,
I so live in the moment that I often find I’m still on Tuesday when the rest of the world has gotten to Friday. π
Wishes are precious thing to me like wonders and visions of the future. I don’t get many and to wish back a memory is a wonderful thing. π
Hi Robert!
The in between is where we always meet, isn’t it? π
How cool is that?!!!
Hi Gary!
How wonderful to see you!
I agree. It’s so easy to focus on the future event that we have to plan for, the emergency, the hassle that takes our time, we forget that it’s it other stuff that life is made of. π
Hi Liz
To me, it’s like the movies; the in-betweens are but a blur:
Rocky Balboa loses a bout, trains hard day and night, and wins in the end. We recall only his losing and the final victory. How he trained is all in fast motion – we’re expected to understand the inbetween.
I’d love to read biographies of great men and women. Only then perhaps I’ll be able to try and understand their inbetweens and then be able to look at my own and understand.
Not that it will turn the clock back, but that with some understanding, comes some solace.
And thanks Lodewijkvdb for the reference to Paulo Coelho’s post. The following hit me like blue thunder:
However enraptured you may be at certain landscapes, or scared whenever you have to make a great effort to go ahead, donΓ’β¬β’t get too used to anything.
Liz,
Isn’t it a funny irony that when we get together at those big events we spend most of our time talking about “in between” stuff?
Have a safe trip,
Mike
One of my fav quotes..
Sooner or later we all discover that the important moments in life are not the advertised ones, not the birthdays, the graduations, the weddings, not the great goals achieved. The real milestones are less prepossessing. They come to the door of memory unannounced, stray dogs that amble in, sniff around a bit and simply never leave. Our lives are measured by these

Hi Zakman!
You say so many things in your comment. If we are present in our moments, we get to experience our life. Sometimes I forget that little thing and get so focused on what I’m going to do that I lose track of now.
Everything changes, I agree. I change to too, but I also keep looking at the stars.
Hi Mike,
The in betweens are where you and I meet, aren’t they? I think they’re pretty special times. I get to meet people like you here.
Hi GP!
not the advertised one
You always bring such insightful thoughts. I’m going to be thinking about this one all day.
