YES WE DO! How Will You Begin?

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 8:57 am

Hope They Do Too

Last night at Open Comments we were sharing quotes. I came across one I like so much I posted it on Twitter as well. This is it.

Everywhere I go I find a poet has been there before me.
–Sigmund Freud

RobynMcMaster responded by sending me this: @lizstrauss You said “Everywhere I go I find a poet has been there before me.” It gave impression you were inspired to write poem.

and so for Robyn, for Lucretia Pruitt, who surely would have written far better sonnet had she chosen to, and for all of us, I did.

YES WE DO!
When, in wonder of new life in my arms,
I looked upon my sleeping son,
And called angels down to keep this heart unharmed
To hold him whole, what fate might come.
Passing time finds a boy to his full height
Earth-tied like me, his world light years from mine.
Far from my mom’s eyes on me at night
Audacious hope harbored also in her mind.
When I think upon changes in that short span
I forgive the broken promises and loved lost prizes
And hear a two-year-old’s “YES I CAN!”
From White Houses to world spaces of all sizes

The awe of “YES, WE CAN!” is “YES, WE DO!”
Hope lives in places where they love their children too.

–E Strauss 01-21-09

Success requires work to realize that hope.

How will you begin?

Except your sonnet is lovely and made me tear up…

Let us all hope that the eternal optimism we see in our children as they grow is met by an equal amount of success, accomplishments and fulfillment.

For the first time in over 8 years, I have hope that it will be.

Thank you Liz - that made my morning… and put my day on a good track!

    You are amazing.

    Hi Liz,

I am going to comment on the new Whitehouse.gov comment page (http://smub.it/janet/commentwhitehouse) to let the Obama team know how much I personally appreciate the hope they’ve given me.

As I blogged this morning, the participatory government they’re asking for is being nicely facilitated by the tools they’re providing.

I know millions of others have offered thanks to them, and he’s given me a way to do so easily. And then when I have advice (who won’t?), I can deliver it there as well.

    Thanks for asking!

Audacious hope, “Yes I can,” and a commitment to work for it helped Barak Obama live the words.

I have five beautiful grandsons and each has special gifts which I’ve been helping to nurture. Giving the love, modeling the life and reiterating the words that let them know I care and they “can do it” helps develop the qualities we want to see in grandchildren who take our place and carry it on.

Thanks for rising to the challenge, Liz. Not many would follow through. You are a “Yes, I can,” person.

It was amazing to see the students at our school stand when they stood in DC, cheer and applaud, just as if they were on the mall. There were tears…there is hope.

We’re all working and hoping together. I think that’s the way that we’ll DO it. I’m filled with a gentle pride that you were touched by my words. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing that Freud quote!

And these are great times, with hope in the air. Still not quite like in 89, when the Berlin Wall feel, and with everything that came in those years, but, yes… Remember that old old Sting song, I hope the Russians love their children like we do? It’s all for children, really…

    Hi Chris,
When the wall came down, I was in NYC. A fews after, I was at Getty going through photos for a project when a fat folder of brand new color photos of the event came in. The one burned in mind is of people hand a baby over the broken wall. I stared at it for the longest time.
