Head and Heart Together: Extreme Leaders Change the World

January 1, 2007 by Liz 13 Comments

I’ve been thinking about changing the world — not that I don’t do that already. Everything we do changes the world in some way. We breathe; we release carbon dioxide for the plants. We smile. We frown. People notice, even if we don’t. We walk the given path or find our own direction. Every step changes what was there before we passed.

But from now on, I want to change the world on purpose, for real, and for the better.

The hard part is making changes for the better. It takes energy to be audacious about pursuing the right goals and values and proving that they make a positive difference. Energy is easy when the world is going smoothly, but not so, when things are extreme and uptight. If I want to always have a positive impact, I need to have energy all times. I need to be an Extreme Leader.

Extreme Leaders know that love generates boundless energy — love of all kinds.

“Love of what future principle we’re trying to live out, love of what people I have around me, and love of what they want for their lives. Love of what customers I have, and love of what customers I might have in the future if I am smarter, faster, and more creative in serving their needs. Love of what impact we can have on the lives of our customers and — if we’re audacious enough — on the world as a whole. Love of what our business really is, and love for what — when we cut away the chaff — we really do at work every day. . . .

If I love who we are, and if I love what we can be, then I’ll love the process of how we get there. And in order to make it all happen, I will act boldly and courageously and I will, at times, fail magnificently. But my love demands that I try. Demands it.” — Steve Farber, as Pops in Radical Leap

Extreme Leaders don’t use their heads solely to run their autonomic functions. They don’t use their hearts only to pump blood.

“Now is the time for all of us to take our power back and become, each of us, Extreme Leaders in our own right. We have to set a new example of what’s right in business and everywhere else. We have to be audacious enough to follow the examples we respect and challenge the ones we don’t.” — Steve Farber, as Edj in Radical Leap

Head and heart together, full-out open, audacious and engaged.

It takes that to be fully human. It takes that to be an Extreme Leader.

When head and heart work together, the world responds positively.

Imagine the little and big changes many Extreme Leaders can make.

How will we change the world this year?

Liz

    Hi Liz,

What an inspirational message! I thought ’06 was a very year, and have plans (not just hopes) for ’07 being an extremely good year.

That’s probably true for most of your readers!

    Hi Roger!
    Well, thanks! 🙂
I have to say that inspiration is all over Mr. Farber’s book. We gree to extreme on what leaders do.

I’m thinking that 2007 is a good time to change the world. After all my head and heart have a few seconds every day with nothing else to do. 😉

    I’m so you stopped by.

Happy New Year, Roger! You are one of the best parts of 2006 this blog has seen (me too) !

Liz: I absolutely love Steve Farber’s work – and I’d love to create a virtual team around The Radical Edge, too – stoke your business, amp your life and change the world. There’s a great roadmap at the end of that book to start the process. What would it take to do that? I’d love to look into it!

Keep up the great work – I’m a big fan!

    Hi Jodee!
I’m working with Steve on a thing or two now. I know a couple of others that I bet you know too, who would find that exciting. I bet we could make something happen that would very, very cool!

I don’t know that I can change the world, but changing something I don’t like about myself is often harder I think.

    Hi Michelle,
Changing how we are, changes the world for sure. The quickest way to change other folks behavior is to chang our own. We change. They stop to figure out just what it is we’re doing. 🙂

Good luck. We’ll change the world together — iin very tiny bits. 🙂

    Morning Liz
Your topic sounds 100 times better than a New Years Resolution.
Personal opinion: ongoing ‘trend’ of lots of stuff I’ve been reading at the end of 2006 (but that was more marketing – business concept orientated). Although: one-2-one marketing starts with love, doesn’t it?

    Hi Sham!
    Welcome!
Thank you. Some once told me this four words are always true:

    “This too shall pass.”

Changing the world is a vision worth working toward.

Thank for finding something inspiring in what I said. 🙂

    Good morning, Karin!
How great to see your face on this lovely day!

Yeah, Karen 2-one marketing starts with love . . . everything does if you want it to mean something worth investing in. 🙂

I have trouble writing words that are only from my head. The sit flat on screen and ask me why anyone would invest in them — they have point. 🙂

Thanks Liz, everybody in this world are leaders in their own small ways… and there are some who are willing to take it a step further to make a purposeful effort to reach out – great to know you as one of them! 🙂
