Ignore Stinky Backlinks

December 2, 2005 by Liz 16 Comments

Ever check out a backlink and find yourself on a page that’s totally bogus?

In checking Letting me be . . . random wandering and philosophy
I have found backlinks on pages that are

  • a collection of sites with the word wondering in the title
  • a collection of sites with the word letting in the title
  • a page advertising a pet store, and one about bears–go figure!
  • a spam blog covered with links that had mine next to an explicit link for an adult site

I didn’t put them there. The first bunch were of no concern.

That last link was a problem. It occasionally came up in search engine listings with the name of my blog next to that explicit text, which made it look like my blog had adult content. Luckily it was a blogspot blog. I flagged it for removal.

If you find yourself with bogus backlinks, it’s usually best to ignore the little stinkers. The only way most can hurt you is if you return the favor and link back to them. Search engines know you can’t control who links to you.

Pretend you’re a rock star, who can’t pick your fans. Keep walking to your limo.

The first time I checked my backlinks I thought I had gone mad – did I enter my www correct?

Never knew there were so many casino sites linking to me.

Never knew there were quite a few ‘work from home’ blogs (well if you call what’s basically a link farm dressed up as a blog) that were linking to me and one was actually stripping my content in full and posting it as their own.

Goes to show you there’s some real shonks doing the rounds.

In my case, I almost don’t have backlinks! 🙂 but that may be because I started my ClearYourMind blog a couple of weeks ago (two). It’s ok to have 600/800/1000 unique visits a day? (and going down to 500 and a little less).

But I have another problem too, nobody seems to comment on my blog! I’m giving 120% on this blog content and nothing happens. A couple of guys only (thank you so much if you are reading!) but it’s just… bad luck?

Going back to backlinks, I think the only way the may hurt you is if you take care of that. Just ignore them! like Trolls.

    (add)
I mean, I know that 800/700 unique visitors are a good proporsion, but I maybe need to reformulate my question: “it’s something wrong if I have 700/800 unique visitors a day and nobody seems to comment on my blog plus, I have almost no backlinks?”

That is what I mean to ask (sorry, my english isn’t that good!)

    Again, Hugs!

Is anyone aware of any WP plugins that deal with referrer spam? I get a bit of it on one of my blogs, but it is an increasing problem.

Ignoring them is easy. I do worry that perhaps if a click on one of them, that it might flag me up as a vulnerable candidate and they’ll target me more in the future.

BTW Liz – I suggested to Darren Rowse a few weeks ago that he should add a ‘subscribe to comments’ facility. I’d heartily recommend it to you as well, because I often forget to come back to posts I’ve previously commented on. It would really help to stimulate conversation.

    Yeah, Martin,
That’s why I gave them such a lovely name. I’ve got one back linke called “Free Food for Everyone,” that’s linked to a post my crayon character wrote about chocolate chip coolies. I know they’re spam sites. I just haven’t figured what the point of some of them are.

Oh Javier, thanks for the hugs,
I’ll come visit you blog and see what I see. Maybe a reason will show itself. Are a good part of your visitors subscriptons? It might be that since you are so new that no one wants to be the first to comment. We could sent a posse over and show them how it’s done. 🙂

Yeah, I think it is a problem that you’re not getting any comments for a couple of reasons.

    • It’s a concern to you, as it would be to me or you wouldn’t have mentioned it.
    • You can’t build a community or get feedback from readers to improve your service if they aren’t talking to you.
    • I get search engine hits almost daily on my personal blog that hit on the content of my comments rather than the content of my posts–which I guess means my readers are smarter than I am. 🙂 No big surprise there..

Does anyone in the community have any idea why this might be happening to Javier?
If we don’t get a response going tonight about this Javier, I’m going to make it Sunday’s conversation problen. I think it’s a great discussion topic.

    Hi Gerard,

I just went to the Dashbord and hit the weblog tools button and did a search for spam tools and came up with a whole list of span tools for WordPress. Hope you find something you need here.

You know I was thinking about that comment subscription feature just this week. It may take a while, we’re a little stressed with the roll out of all the new blogs at 9rules, and I’m a little WordPress challenged myself as far as being nervous about playing with it after only using it now–what? six weeks. But I think you’re right it would be a good asset. Meanwhile, how about if I call you up every time I write something? 🙂

I just got an update of my site design, it might help. I think one of the most important things on a website is the user experience. If the user isn’t comfortable, a weblog its just not worth it.
That is why I moved the feed, the delicious bookmark and the comment link down at the end of each post!

Hope that is the solution. I will be giving an update here if everything goes well 😉 if not, well… I will just have to wait then!

But isn’t a small matter; comments on blogs. That is how bloggers interact with their users, it might be worth of a Successful Blog post! “how to interact with your users?”

    Hugs!

    Hi Javier,
I’m interested. Where was the comment link previously?

Thanks for the idea for a new post. I’m not sure what I would include. I’ll have to think on it. You know what it’s like to write about something you do naturally.
    big hug go you too,

My comment link was under the title! I think users didn’t find the comment link easy when they end reading the posts, I changed it on the bottom of every post and updated a little the theme with beautiful colors as well 😉

Only 72% of users scroll down to the footer normally, but with a “sidebar-footer” that percentage becomes something around 85% because they know down there there are more options, and sometimes that helps to the users to read the post 😉

    Hugs!

    Hi Javier,
So now you’re getting comments regularly?
With the sidebar on the side are you getting more response there too?
    hugs, back,
