The Blog Herald: The Two Webs — Information or Relationships?

May 29, 2007 by Liz

Relational Information?

We’re living in two Internets. It looks much like the companies we find in the world of brick and mortar. One is about places, information, and data. It’s the buildings in which people work. The other is about people, relationships, and conversation. It’s the people who work in those buildings. One is a structure. The other is social.

The Blog Herald: Authenticity as a Real Life Skill for Changing the World

May 22, 2007 by Liz

Autenticity as a Life Skill

Authenticity and transparency by definition require self-awareness and a loss of false modesty. Those two conditions underpin communication undermine our comfortable notions about who we are. The old ways we saw ourselves and the old words we used to describe us no longer work quite so well. They’re too misleading, self-deprecating, or just not really who we are.

Once we get the hang of it, authenticity and transparency free us to be honest without self-consciousness. The old fear of boastfulness or self-promotion is gone, because we are self-expressed. Learning to communicate in a blogging culture of such values could make any blogger a better person. It’s done that for me.

Graduation . . . The Signs Were All There

May 19, 2007 by Liz

Nerd Family on TV

This post is purely for weekend entertainment. I point you to it at my writing blog to give a peek into the guy who graduates today. This is an excerpt from what I call “The Milk Story.” It’s part of the reason I think of the three of us as Nerd Family on TV.

One thing about three-year-olds is that today they’ll eat any thing. Tomorrow you can offer the very same thing, and they won’t go anywhere near it. Our son had a signal for when he was in the latter mood. He would fill up on milk and ignore his food. That’s exactly what he did to his dad’s highly-prepared meal. The young man of three, drank his milk. Looked at his plate. Looked at his father and with angelic politeness said,

“May I have more milk, please?”

“I think you need to eat first,” his father replied.

Our son politely shifted his position, turning his back to his father his face to me, ignoring his food and his father too. He said, “Mom how do you spell refrigerator? . . . chandelier? . . . calculator? . . . spoon?

If we were talking about my son, it’s often the first story I tell about him. It defines our family perfectly. To read the whole story, click the title below.

Today that three-year-old boy graduates from college. He doesn’t remember that day. His parents won’t forget it.

The Blog Herald: Bloggers Changing the World

Autheticity and Transparency in the Same Room

Oddly enough, I didn’t hear a negative word said. Negatives weren’t needed. Somehow, we knew that negatives require defending, but positives move things forward.

It was sharing.

People can make such progress when they’re not worried about being criticized for their ideas. That’s the power of respect.

At the Blog Herald: Getting Jazzed for Real

May 10, 2007 by Liz

It’s Like Music

In the groove, in the zone, time slips away; action follows action naturally. It’s as if what we do is what was meant to be. It’s exhilarating.

Did you ever notice that you get in the zone when you’re perfectly prepared for a task — one you’ve been waiting for? When it’s “bring it on” kind of task, you’re likely to jump into a flow state.

What Do Liz and Mike Have in Common?

April 3, 2007 by Liz

Bloggers Face Off

This weekend Mike Sansone and I received an email from Daniel at Daily Blog Tips. It read

I took the liberty to write to both of you at the same time because I know that you are friends. I want to ask you if you would be willing to
participate on the project I am running called “Bloggers Face-Off”. It
should take 5 minutes to answer to the questions (only numbers or short
answers required), after that I will present both of your answers side by
side.

What a fun idea to see what we have in common! Click the image below to see how we independently answered the questions.

Liz and Mike

Thanks Daniel for making us a part of your project.
