Joel Auchenbach Is an SOB of the Very Best Kind
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 5:36 pm
Today at WashingtonPost.com, Joel Auchenbach responded on his Auchenblog in to our discussion of Sabine’s article on his commenting community in our post Great Find: Commenting on CTBIZBlogs. Mr. Auchenbach began by saying:
The Boodle is the buzz of blogworld. At CTBizBlogs, Sabine writes about “the amazing community that’s sprung up in the comments” of the A-blog. (She heard about it from Stephen Baker in his Blogspotting column for Business Week; Baker took note of the large number of comments about the dog-pee item written by Tom Shroder.) She writes, “When readers leave comments on most blogs, the comments are usually about that particular post — people weighing in with additional information, questions, corrections, opinions. But the comments on some posts here read almost like they’re from discussion forums, with regular readers referring to comments made by other readers in past posts. The conversation weaves in and out of the posts and comments, and swirls around the various personalities who now know each other, online at least.” . . .
Thank you, Joel, for taking the conversation further and for caring about community as much as we do. Your Successful and Outstanding Blogger (SOB) button will be on it’s way to you via email immediately.

Thanks for finding that, Liz. Curiously, there’s no trackback from him on my post. But that’s ok.
Besides, now we’re commenting on posts about posts on comments on other posts!
Pretty soon you’ll have your own “boodle” just like Joel! (That isn’t an x-rated comment, honest, it’s what his commenters call their comments, apparently.)

Hi Sabine,
I think you might have misunderstood. I trackbacked Joel when I posted the article yesterday. That’s how he found out about it. Then I noticed some traffic from that direction today, so I went to see why.
It’s fun to be commenting on commenting on commenting. It’s like in my novel where I talk about trying to be thinking about thinking about nothing.
Well, now Sabine, I have proof you are, indeed, a Successful and Outstanding Blogger.

See Liz, trackbacking can be useful - well done on
Seems WashingtonPost.com is one media outlet that’s quite accepting of blogging I’ve noticed over recent times - although seems like the journo’s over there are none too happy - see this Blog Herald post.

Hi Martin,
I thick in this case the sentence could be. A trackback might be useful, if done at all. Yesterday might have been the first time I was brave enough and had enough people and reasons to try it.
I was reading Auchenbach’s comments today. He’s really got a community blog going. I’m really in awe. I was reading and learning. No kidding.
The journalists are just worried about their jobs.
It’s like the children’s literature people who don’t really like kids.

Ah! I thought you were saying that you had a trackback in your comments — got it now.
Yes, it’s amazing the commenting that goes on over there. I think he’s doing the right thing — letting these folks go at it. Who cares if it’s not always on topic — it’s part of the blog, now. The audience participation is part of the show.
I wonder how much comment spam he gets and how it’s nuked? Moderation? Someone with his or her finger on the spam-nuking trigger at all times?
Martin, thanks for that link to the article — fascinating. Some folks just don’t get it.

Whoa! The world famous Washington Post Sabine. Right Here In my Bar!!!.
Hey There!
Most of the big programs have that spamware that nukes it before it ever get to him, I bet.
There’s another article link in the comments to Joel’s article today about the “conversation” between news and the dot com.
Well I hope a few of the folks who came over to see you Sabine, go back and tell Joel what an SOB is.
Smiles,
Liz

Hi Sabine,
Sigh… another blog to add to my reading list thanks to Liz. A quick look at CT Biz so far and I know it’s right down my alley.

I’m Evil like that Martin.
I form little armies of readers who eat nachos.

Liz … you are the Queen Bee of the SOB’s and one of the joys of coming to “work” every morning on the blogogsphere is knowing that I’m sure to come across another high-quality blog.
One day Liz, one day … we should all get together after making our marks (and riches) from blogging and have a real nacho feista and a reunion where it all started
Be careful Liz, you’re taking over the blogosphere and shortly you’ll be labeled a A-Lister - just remember us little guys

Martin,
Every man who’s every known will tell you for hours on end that you don’t have to worry about my memory.
I like long-term relationships that are built on concrete not sand. That’s what my dad taught me. It’s always worked for me.
And I seem to be the only one who has no plans for world domination in the blogosphere. All I want to do is figure out how to get people to sponsor me and amke a living.
Have some fun doing it.
I’ve had the big jobs I’ll have another one maybe. Who knows. That part will work itself out. But whether I know you. That’s set in stone. I actually look in the mirror.

Liz,
One of the pleasures of blogging is meeting quality new folks the world over, and I can tell you this: you’ve got a friend for life from this part of the world … mate
My niche is home business: I’m not one too fussed on isolation issues personally - but I understand that many fear/dread the isolation of working from home. It’s people like you - a Godsend really - that make it all fun. You engage with everyone and in a world of growing nastiness in the blogosphere you really are the real deal.
Now enough of the mushiness .. Hmm errr (deep voice) … men don’t mush like this, so err, yeah … good going, mate

“Queen Bee of the SOBs?” I guess that’s why the “buzz of the blogworld” comes from her, right Liz?
Martin, I just looked at your blog — I love it. Subscribed! Another WordPress blog, too. I’ll have to actually go there to read the posts, rather than just do the RSS because it’s a pleasure to look at, as well.

Hi Martin, and good morning from the last end of your day!
Thank you, I don’t know another way to be.
I’m really just looking for all of the Australians I know to pitch in a fly me down there one more time.

Hey there, Sabine,
I send off that e-mail yesterday. That was quite a day. Wasn’t it? Hope you’re feeling better.
I read your message to Martin and I smile.

I’m a little blog matchmatcher.
You guys can call me blogyentl.
Soon there will be little bloglets running around. Then they’ll move away to live in London and make their own way in the world.

Hey Liz,
Quid pro quo - we Aussies pitch in to get you here if you chip in to get me over there
Actually, I’m (hopefully) planning a trip to the States next year for a few conferences/expos I want to attend - I’m close to getting a bunch of media outlets to fork out the beans for the trip in exchange for reporting it. Fingers crossed
Sabine - thanks for the compliment. Yeah, I’m like you: I utilize rss mostly but for blogs that I really like I visit personally most days.
Thank you blogyentl for your matchmaking services - the checks in the mail

Hi Martin,
I didn’t know your back need scratching.
Oh a trip to the US, what fun, you’ll have to tell me you’re entire blow boy blow itinerary.
Amy time for the matchmaking services. That’s where I introduce you and you two forget all about me. Except of course the occasional card with a picture of a grand blogleta and an expectation of a bloglet’s graduation and wedding gift.
Woe is me. I’m just a poor homeless, little orphan wair, who has no true friends, and the Internet hates me,
smiles,
Liz
