Mini-Session 5: Maximizing the Effectiveness of Videoblogging

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 12:01 pm

Guest Speaker: Rodney Rumford

Video Blogging: How to maximize the effectiveness of a video blog can present some real challenges. It is too bad that most bloggers don’t leverage the power of video in a more efficient and effective manner.

Here are a few questions to ponder:

  • 1. Why even create a video blog?
  • 2. Should I use a video delivery service such as YouTube?
  • 3. Do i want my video blog to ba a “Real Video Podcast Channel” so it
    can be on iTunes?
  • 4. How can I leverage my video blog and make it spread everywhere and allow people to put the entire video blog into their blog?
  • 5. Would it be cool if other video viewers could connect and form a
    community around my video blog?
  • 6. How can i make my video blog more viral?
  • 7. What makes a “good” video engaging?

Feel free to ask any questions or add your thoughts and
comments to the conversation on this hot topic.

Thank you, Rodney!

    Liz,
The advantages of using video on a business blog are many.
    1. People consume content in different ways. text is not always best.
    2. Video can be more engaging and convey messaging that does not translete emotion from text.
    3. People will find the video a “Value Add” resource and be more likely to return.
    4. Video give you a nice “knowledge Module” that other bloggers can repurpose and share.
    5. You can create an entire channel of video content that is branded and can be embedded into many blogs via a sidebar widget that showcases all of your video.
    6. Traffic Traffic Traffic.

Okay, be gentle here. How might I best use video to talk about SOBCon?

    Rodney Rumford said

You could use video several ways.
    1. Speakers could upload a “preview” video on their specific topic that is 3-8 minutes on YouTube
    2. You cold embedd those video’s into a post, post series or a dedicated page.
    3. These “talking head videos” can be resized to whatever physical size is appropriate.
    4. Attendees can record their own video and alert you to it and if it meets the criteria (that you set up when you make a “call” for attendees to tell their story). If it makes sense you can create a dedicated attendees page that houses video… people can hear other people’s story and get an introduction to them even BEFORE the conference.
    5. You could create a SOBCon Channel and allow other bloggers to embedd this into their blogs.

Tht is a short list for now. I can elaborate if need be.

What are you willing to say about Video Sticky?

    Hi Rodney,

I’ve been reading about Video Sticky and can’t wait to see more. We need something like you are describing.

Do you have a recommendation for PC software to edit video clips - like the ones you take with a camera?

    Rodney Rumford said

Thanks for the nice compliment Liz, much appreciated. ;)

What am I willing to say about http://www.VideoSticky.com ?? I do not want this to be a commercial, but rather to inform people about how video can be leveraged in many ways.

    1. There is problem with online video in it’s current state: You can’t find the diamonds of content in the pile of garbage. We address that.

    2. There is no way to create a “channel of vdeo content from any site on the net”. We address that.

    3. There is no way to connect with like minded video content viewers. We address that

    4. There is no way for community to form around a “themed channel of content” and allow communication between the members in a organized way. We address that.

    5. There is no way to make your channel of content portable “embedd in anyone’s blog”. We address that.

    6. There is no way to power the collective wisdom of the crowds and leverage it so that the best content rises to the top. We address that.

Thats’ enough for now…. suffice it to say that6 we built this service because i had major pain points and kept asking myself. why can’t i do this???… why is this so hard?? So thought that people would go for a solution that is built out of nescessity. So we decided to build this a few monhs ago… and we are close to beta release.

    Sandy,
You can use Window Movie Maker or CyberLink Power Director (under $90 bucks). Both of these solution allow basic editing, titles, transitions, sound layers, etc. I like power director the new version is amazing.

You can make good looking stuff with both of these programs.

For more high end video and screen capture video I use Camtasia ($300.00) Which gives many output options (flash, mov, wmv, etc.)

    Rodney Rumford said

    Ben,
Yes. There are several online video editing tools for sure. They do have some limitations, especially when you want very fine control and more mix down compatability.

Online video editing software is done via a flash server module interface and is pretty slick for basic editing. There are some limitations on file size, track mixing, output type, etc. The first time you lose all of your work when you are 90% done editing a file is the last time you will use one of these. ;)

These tools work for the “casual editing need”, but rarely give you the flexability that many users need. From where i stand, spending 90 bucks saves you a lot of time, pain and aggrivation.

    Hi everyone and Rodney!

Here’s my video blogging question - what are some of the ways you can monetize a video blog?

  13. March 12th, 2007 at 12:47 pm
    Rodney Rumford said

    Minic,
Great resource list. The one thing that you will notice on most of these services is that you can’t save the video to your desktop. As a publisher I always want backup copies. What happens if they lose data or fold.

But this is a great resource list. :)

    Rodney Rumford said

    Wendy,
There are severala strategies to monetize a videoblog.

    1. You can use the blog to share “Teaser Content” that you would upsell.

    2. You can make your video a dedicated podcast and have a “paid” podcast channel

    3. You can distribute your sites through services like Revver and they revenue share to publishers.

    4. Video Blogs have a comparatively long “Pageview Time” that is good for advertisers. Sticky.

    5. Your video can be syndicated from other sites and they can help you drive traffic and revue.

    Minic said

Yes, Rodney. I agree. In my “past life” I edit short videos and is proficient with Final Cut Pro. But, technology and distribution model has evolved that most people can now jump in and join :) Though I have not tried web based editing yet, this is a good start for those who want to try it out first before going into other editing systems.

Thank you for the very good discussions here.

Rodney - can you expand on #2 - “You can make your video a dedicated podcast and have a “paid” podcast channel”. I have very little experience in this area and I’m curious to learn more. Thanks!

    Minic,
Thanks for poi9nting out that i forgot to mention Final Cut Pro which is a nice software tool.

The distribution model has changed to be sure. That is what makes online video so exciting. I feel like it is the wild west again and a whole new level of creativity is being released and new consumption and revenue models will emerge.

How publishers embrace, monetize, share and extend with this medium remains to be seen. But we are seeing some very strong patterns in consumption moving online… just ask TV execs. They are freaked/concerned/interested.

I am on my way to iHollywwodForum Conference this afternoon to discuss this exact topic.

    Wendy,
You can create a dedicated podcast feed, this feed would be submitted and included into itunes. This is the “Teaser Channel” that will extend the brand, raise awareness and share value added content. From this medium you can insert paid advertising if you wish, or use it to soft promote your other products or services.

Hey, iTunes has 60+ Million users, and they are the largest online media distrubution platform, so why not use it and leverage their traffic? plus it is free. ;)

You can also set up a paid podcast where subscribers pay a subscription fee for access to a paid unique to them podcast rss feed. This is fairly complex but can be done.

OK. I was just curious. Like everyone else, when you can’t get into a site, you really want in. The scarcity of beta invites always does this when sites are going to launch.
