Open Mic 7pm Chgo Time: It’s Time for Dessert!

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 2:28 pm

Join Us Tonight

Did You Save Room?

So many summer events are about food. We meet with friends, family, and coworkers at weddings, barbeques, and picnics, at conventions and conferences. We share great times over food. Tonight we’re talking about grand and simple desserts: Do you save room for dessert? What’s your favorite? What’s the most spectacular, weird, or outrageous dessert you’ve ever seen? What dessert rules do you have — did your family have when you were a kid? Does the perfect dessert exist?

Oh, and bring example links to share —

The rules are simple — be nice.

Do be nice. :)

My favorite dessert is currently banana-raspberry cake with cream cheese frosting. It’s low-fat, which is usually against my rules (desserts should NOT be low fat!), but it’s wonderfully summery.

Although in the summer, my friends and I prefer to take a tour of Oak Park’s excellent ice cream parlors: Oberweis, Ben & Jerry’s, Cold Stone and a new gelato place that just opened on Marion Street.

    Liz,
I won’t be able to stop by tonight, although I’m looking forward to having more time on my hands come December when I’m done with grad school!!

Anyway, I wanted to participate. So, a few of my favorite desserts:

    1) Bananas Foster
    2) French Silk Pie
    3) Monster Cookies
    4) An Irish Cappuccino

    And now for my slightly-peculiar-not-so-much-a-dessert-as-maybe-just-a-snack:

    1) A bowl of skim milk with a couple sliced bananas sprinkled with nutmeg!

I know your mouth is watering now, Liz :)

OMG - I can’t believe it. I have arrived at an open Mic before everyone has gone to bed. I usually turn up after the party is over.

Liz - in the UK, we don’t get so many of the great outdoor things. It is cold and dreary here already.

I love desserts but I think I have an allergy to cream, which spoils it a bit. But my favourite one I had in the California Grill at the Contemporary Resort in Walt Disney World. They wouldn’t give me the recipe for that one (I think some of the chef’s are kinder than others) But it was like a banana and butterscotch sauce cake.

My second favourite’s are Boston Cream Pie and Key Lime pie - but again, we don’t get those here.

Now, when I was a kid, we didn’t have dessert all the time, but when we did - we used to have cheesecake with tinned mandarines, which was lovely. And I also liked Angel Delight. Did you get that in America? It’s powdered stuff you mix with milk and whisk so it’s kind of like a mousse.

Anyway Liz - you didn’t tell us your favourite dessert. What is it?

The perfect desert is Melted Sugar Cream . Believe me that you didn’t taste a real desert until you tasted this. I must admit it counts very much how it is done. My grandma used to make the best cream.

and I always made room for desert… hope you get a chance to try it also!

My favorite dessert is fresh Oregon peaches, followed by a well-done peach pie. Plain-old Lindys-style cheesecake is a distant third.

Rules? Well, generally in restaurants we didn’t eat dessert, and at Thanksgiving, we’d have it a couple of hours after finishing dinner. And, of course, at Passover, there was the Afikoman.

You guys are backstage . . . but it’s great keep talking. I guess we can have a pre-conference, we can a pre-open comments. :)

Open Comments with the picture of the dessert really starts at 7:00pm by the clock in the sidebar. ;)
