The Mic Is On: George Smith Is Taking Us Bowling in Crocs!
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 6:56 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
Welcome Guest Host: George Smith from Crocs!
We’re going bowling in the comment box tonight … Think of everything that goes with 21st century bowling: great music, bags, shoes, and t-shirts, the great people who show up, and how unpredictable it all is.
And we’ll be talking with George Smith of the famous Crocs company.
Bowling is a lot like blogging. It brings folks together and takes a different skill set from other sports. We’ll be talking about …
- The trappings of 21st Century bowling
- The BowlHer Party in Chicago, June 25th
- Best Bowling stories
And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
Watch for the Crocs … Oh, and bring links with pix that might remind us your bowling experiences.
The rules are simple — be nice.
Do be nice.

Howdy George! Hey, tip o’ the hat to ya Liz!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi George! Hi Robert!
Meet each other!
ME Liz Strauss said
Have you two ever been bowling? I think of it as the great sports equalizer.
George G Smith Jr said
Hey Robert - checking out your blog now.
As for bowling - does anyone candlepin bowl? I went to college in Massachusetts - it was so much fun to do there, now sure if it’s anywhere else..
George G Smith Jr said
I make Barack Obama look like an amazing bowler. I scratched during BUMPER BOWLING.
ME Liz Strauss said
George,
I’ve never seen anyone do candlepin bowling except on TV a very long time ago. What’ve I been missing?
George G Smith Jr said
I don’t know if it’s something your missing. It’s like a totally different game. It makes me feel like a giant though, which is fun!
Robert Hruzek said
I used to bowl when I was in High School - held a 160 avg in our league. Sadly, haven’t bowled in a coon’s age, though.
Never heard of candlepin bowling. What the heck is that?

(I love the intro music!)
ME Liz Strauss said
George,
I can imagine that “giant feeling.” Immediately my brain went to “fe-fi-fo-fum”
Joe Hauckes said
Hey Liz, George, Robert & anyone else who recently joined in
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hi Everyone! I haven’t bowled since I was a kid - or more like hit the ball down the gutter.
Joe Hauckes said
I used to have a wicked hook, but I got a real hand instead. :-0
Robert Hruzek said
That’s hilarious! What, you guys couldn’t afford REAL bowling balls and pins?
Becky McCray said
Hi, all!
I have absolutely nothing to add about bowling. I may have to start an off-topic just to have something to say!
George G Smith Jr said
Not sure of the origins. Some puritanical thing I’m sure
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Joe!
I think we need the Klondike bars early this evening!
Beer anyone? What’s bowling without drinking and misbehaving?
Robert Hruzek said
Tip o’ the hat, Joe, Glenda!
“… got a real hand instead.” Bwa-ha-ha-ha! I just got that. :-\
ME Liz Strauss said
Robert,
I bowled a 163 once.
I was clearly more like a 133 average.
Now I’m guessing I’d be more like a 93.
Joe Hauckes said
Hey Ms Glenda, we could trip the light fantastic with or without bowling shoes
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Becky, I’ll be off topic with you!
George G Smith Jr said
Hey everyone new!
The only bowling I’m decent at is Wii Bowling. I think I just prefer technology. Plus I hate bowling shoes…
Robert Hruzek said
Howdy Becky!
Hey George, what was your favorite bowling ball? Mine was one of those clear jobs with a shiny metallic blue diamond shape in the middle. Very cool.
ME Liz Strauss said
Glenda,
I can only imagine the way it would work in your scooter … Still I think you’d be a “mean” competitor. Fearless, Glenda.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Sounds good, Joe!
Joe Hauckes said
** throws the Klondikes in the Air **
Catch everyone, whatever flavor you like is in the bunch, just grab what you want!
ME Liz Strauss said
Becky,
Talk about whatever you want. We always do anyway.
George G Smith Jr said
I always go for something obnoxious - like a bright fuchsia one that ways like nothing so I can throw it as fast as possible
George G Smith Jr said
I think I’m going to have to watch The Big Lebowski before BowlHer this year….
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
You make the best Klondike deliverer.
ME Liz Strauss said
It’s hard to be in a bowling alley and not make jokes about balls.
Sorry, had to say that.
Robert Hruzek said
My favorite bowling memory: Once I bowled a 200 game - with absolutely NO witnesses! I would swear it’s true (if my momma had made me promise never to swear).
Happiest/saddest day of my bowling life.
Robert Hruzek said
Well, at least we made it to #32 before it happened Liz. :-\

George,
I think it was people living in log cabins didn’t have the tools or the time to make the big shapely ones.
Robert Hruzek said
By the way, thanks for the Klondikes, Joe! Goes good with my A&W root beer.
George G Smith Jr said
Robert - I’d be happy to bowl a 100…a 200 is an Everest that I will probably never climb.
Becky McCray said
Ha! Caught the Heath Bar Klondike! Yay!
Lisa D. Jenkins said
Ahoy everyone -
So . . . . bowling. The shirts are awesome!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Liz, I have yet to try bowling in my scooter. They now have ball ramp thingies for bowlers in wheelchairs. Looks boring to me! I’d be more apt to kick the ball down the lane. You know, like soccer bowling. Yeah, now that sounds more like it!
ME Liz Strauss said
The bowling alleys in our town were like root beer stands with alcohol. They had the best hamburgers, hot dogs, and breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches.
People would go the three of them to eat and not to bowl.
Joe Hauckes said
Sorry to hear that Robert, my best was 223 IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE TEAM AND WE WON!
)
(Yeah, they even bought me a beer after the game
Becky McCray said
Did Glenda just invent a new sport?
George G Smith Jr said
I would be afraid to eat at the bowling alley’s in my hometown…
Laurie said
Little known fact about me: I was once apart of a Bowling League, and I have my own bowling ball and shoes.
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Lisa,
I was thinking about you just a half hour ago. Great to see you.
The shirts are definitely worth noticing. I keep changing my mind about whether they’re awesome.
Joe Hauckes said
Ok, who here ever Bowled in a League?
ME!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Becky, would you like to try it? Bring your steel toe crocs!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hiya! Laurie,
Thanks for coming.
Your own shoes is something. But your own ball is serious.
You made a commitment.
A bowling is more fun than most folks suspect.
George G Smith Jr said
Steel toe crocs, eh?
*runs to product development*
Robert Hruzek said
Lisa, I think the bowling shirt look must be coming back. It’s all Charlie Sheen ever wears on his Two and a Half Men TV show.
Laurie said
Yup… me too, Joe. I was in high school and I was in it with my parents and brother.

Thanks, Liz - great to be here. Tip your waitstaff, folks!
The Bowling Alley here served chicken livers, gizzards and hearts. Umm,- ewwww. . .
George G Smith Jr said
I never was but my next door neighbor was and, almost every saturday, there was a local tv cast of the best bowlers and he was on it all the time.
Joe Hauckes said
My favorite part of bowling (league or not) was AFTER we were done, we would go out to the Diner and get Breakfast.
Pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, french toast… UUUuuummmmmmm
Becky McCray said
Glenda, imagine the fun we could have with that…
Laurie said
Thanks for the welcome Liz!
A ball is serious, huh? Friends are always amazed when we go for fun and I bring it. They always ask me what I named it. Who knew they were suppose to have a name?!
ME Liz Strauss said
#52
Laurie,
Can’t imagine bowling with my son. Can’t imagine him bowling.
Robert Hruzek said
Glenda, Becky - Hey, I like that idea! ‘Course, we’d ALL need steel-toed Crocs for that one! Hurry up with the development cycle, George!
Lisa D. Jenkins said
51
Well Robert, I think there’s a lesson in there somewhere. LOL
Robert Hruzek said
Come to think of it; steel-toed Crocs would have been useful at my job at the refinery in Aruba! Feet would have been cool, yet protected.
George G Smith Jr said
I have very little to do with product development - but I would bet that they have thought of these things. We have an amazing team
Lisa D. Jenkins said
50
For real, George? Steel-toe crocs?!
Laurie said
Why can’t you imagine him bowling, Liz? How old is he? I think it is fun no matter what your age is, and I always enjoyed doing things with my family as a kid and teen.
ME Liz Strauss said

Becky McCray said
Robert, I think you should ask for the cowboy boot Crocs.
Robert Hruzek said
#61
Yeah, if you are a TV star, you can turn ANYTHING into a fashion statement! I’ve seen ‘em in all the stores now, too.
What’s worse; I’ve seen shoes modeled after bowling shoes in the stores too. Now THAT’s sad! (shakes head)
George G Smith Jr said
Well - we’re not just “rubber shoes” anymore. We have a whole line of lots of different products. It’s amazing what they’re coming out with…

Serious question: What have you learned from bowling? Anything?
Joe Hauckes said
Off topic, someone please click my name.
Just to see if it shows up on statcounter for my new forum.
ME Liz Strauss said

I’ve learned that sometimes you have to ease your way into the strike zone … head-on never works.
George G Smith Jr said
Bowling taught me that I can’t be good at everything…
That sounds horribly arrogant. I don’t mean it the way it sounds…
Lisa D. Jenkins said

I actually don’t have my TV hooked to anything other than a DVD player. So . . No, I do not watch it.
But I remember a story (about 10yrs ago, or so) where someone was sneaking around a university library and waiting for girls to kick off their sandals, do some kind of Navy Seal ground crawl over to them and paint their toe nails without them knowing.
Truly.

Noted. And copied for future reference.
It’s true though - I got us to SM from bowling and crocs. Look at me go!
Joe Hauckes said
#93, Robert, I learned to concentrate on the objective (pins) to focus on a specific direction (the arrows) and the delivery of the ball to the point of impact (the follow through)
I know you didn’t ask me, but I thought I’d add my 2 cents

Robert Hruzek said
George, it’s a group writing project I host every month called “What I Learned From…”. I choose the topic, folks write about it. Lots of fun!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi George,
Did it turn out to be a team-building event?
George G Smith Jr said
111 -
I figured that out. My initial reaction was based on something in the lexicon of most teenagers and college aged students about attractive female parents…
George G Smith Jr said
112 -
In my experience, team building events generally make people that don’t have a problem being a part of a team (outgoing types) closer while the quieter types just get left out.
But that’s just my anecdotal experience…
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
#108 I was wondering whose mind who land in the gutter first…

Oh no! I’m late! Geez. Hi everyone!
Bowling - yes. Grew up in Boston but hated candlepin bowling. Always preferred ‘big balls’ as we called ‘em. Used to be ’sick’ every Wed as a kid; was my mom’s bowling league day. Going bowling was much more fun. I too have my own ball (sparkly blue) and shoes but haven’t been in decades. And back in the 70’s I worked at the bar at a bowling alley down in Orlando. Guys would give me $1 tips for having their beer ready for them by the time they got to the bar from their lane.
How’s that for life lessons? Customer service!
Oh and crocs - love ‘em. have the restaurant ones, husband has hiking ones (kinda like tevas) and I have these really cute ballet flats …
Lisa D. Jenkins said
Anyone remember the episode of Cheers where it turns out that uppity Diane is a bowling goddess?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
118 Lisa, so now all of you is in the gutter? How many “special” klondikes did you consume?
Robert Hruzek said
Totally off topic, but this question just showed up in my twitter stream:

C’mon, y’all; with the combined brainpower we represent here, we oughtta be able to answer that one!
Lisa D. Jenkins said

#109 leagues usually started out that way - you sign up at the alley and unless you have a pre-made team they put you with 3 or 4 others. Great way to make friends - every week you bowl against a different team.

Good night, Mary,
Thanks for being here!

Liz, I think I still have a pair in my closet from when I was little. I wonder if I could sell them to Bam-Bam or Pebbles?

You work on the poem, Joe,
I just got an email I have to answer.
Meet you back here.
Joe Hauckes said
I started it earlier, but nothing came to me.
I will continue to think!

Thanks Liz and everyone. It was a ball.
I’ll be back for Joe’s poem. No pressure tho, Joe.
ME Liz Strauss said
Good night, Glenda!
You were in your best form tonight! Thank you!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
My pleasure, Liz!
Thank you for the space to be me.

We Bowled through the night and traded some stories
Some where low scores but many a Glory
Shoes came up in many a tail
and sprays were used to no avail
There were Crocks but no Alligators
to temper our own little instigators
Off topic as always we did tread
And never with the least little dread
Klondikes for all were freely dispersed
Fat be damned and calories be cursed
How to end a night such as this?
Just that friends like you should all be Kissed.
Burma Shave
Nite Liz

No! I had not. That’s amazing!
We’d better tell Joe quickly!
