The Mic Is On: We’re Art Crazy . . .

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:02 pm

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

We’re Talking About Art!

We might talk about

  • What makes it art?
  • How do you know it’s art?
  • Is that art?
  • graphic design, photography, ceramics, weaving, welding, spin art, calligraphy, graffiti, concrete, flower arranging, art therapy, music, cinema, theatre, architecture, poetry, dance
  • modern, renaissance, gothic, folk, fine
  • painting, drawing, sculpture, stained glass, blown glass, calligraphy
  • art history, art fairs, art galleries, art in the park
  • Art isn’t what you hang on a refrigerator.
  • Don’t drink and draw.

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey.

Oh, and bring a link, if you have one to share.

–ME “Liz” Strauss

I, too, look for things that I will like for a long time.

By the way, one of the things about Monet’s Water Lillies that floored me was that when I looked at it up close, the strokes themselves seemed so simple to do. It was the composition, and he was a master at composing those simple strokes.

The same thing with Suerat. Dots are easy, but not like he did them!

But I also do more everyday stuff - my background is in design and marketing. Stop by the blog and visit :^)

Liz, I believe Ashley and I have crossed paths occasionally. I met her on mybloglog. How she has her blog/studio/market set-up is exeptional.

I agree with her that attending festivals is not the best way for a painter to sell her work. I attended many festivals back east but was selling hand painted fabric items such as pillows, placemats and duvet covers. They are social events. I like the idea of selling online as an individual to another individual. It is private yet public at the same time online.

Well, G’morning. Sorry I missed everything last night. It turned out that at the last minute during dinner last night I had to go to the hospital in a ’support’ slash ‘chauffeur’ kind of way that just dragged on and on and…. ugh. (nothing more serious than car troubles of my folks)

I’m making a fresh pot of coffee now, and I’m going to start reading all the posts from the beginning, very slowly .. so I can think of snappy comebacks to myself and pretend I was here in person.

Hello, HART! We will try to psychically interpret your snappy comebacks - LOL

You meanwhile, will have to psychically interpret who the actual author of the comment is, because we had quite the go-round last night. It seems the plugin was causing the pre-fill info for name, email, etc, to randomly assign a stranger’s information. So Joe is not always Joe, It’s Sheila. Or me. Or I’m Darren. It got quite amusing after a while. Missed you, glad it wasn’t too serious.

Thanks to Liz and all of the participants for a delightful evening! Hope y’all have a wonderful day!

Hi Marti! Fortunately, I have no snappy comebacks to add! Did Liz every figure out what plugin caused all this havoc? You know Liz! Or, do we? That all could have been some M.I.T. night-long experiment or something! * Mental note: Check Online Banking Balances!

    I enjoyed all the links..
    - Cowgirl Jessica’s Vancouver Art Gallery has some nice pictures
    - I enjoyed Cowboy Mr.Angry’s YouTube video.. After his video, I got lost in related ‘Graffiti’ videos over there
    - I tried to refresh many times the new wing at Cowgirl Liz’s Chicago Art Institute, but nothing changes - I think they made that up and the CAM does not refresh every 15 minutes (Those Bastards!)
    - I was slightly amused reading Cowboy Robert’s claim to write and sing all the words at his wedding .. because, I did that too! 100 bottles of beer on the wall .. (Well, I wanted to anyway - but, I was sober most of the night)
    - I didn’t really get Cowboy Shiela/Joe ..but, tried to browse everybody’s sites :)

My favorite site was Cowboy Tiny Gigantic and added to my bloglines! Enjoyed reading “How to be a better lover .. the definitive sex manual for good business” and a few other .pdf’s on his site - quite amusing!

As for (H)ART .. I’ve got a couple beaut’s in our house - I should take some pictures one day. Our favorites, however .. are the two prints ‘Irises’ and ‘Starry Night’ where, the full size print cost about $19.99 and the framing etc cost $20,000 or something!~~

    What makes it art?

Art is when you struggle with making an image from your imagination. When the emotions and imagination inspire you to make something. I don’t care if it’s ceramics, ink drawings, collage, oil painting found objects…I think the issue is that people have “stature” invested…they are too concerned with if art is “historically correct” or not…if it can create and maintain the idea of investment. I think all that is mostly bullshit. It might be important for people who teach art hisptory or want to use art as an investment. But art is storytelling.

We tell a story to survive and share survival with each other. Art is dependant on imagination…on emotion and imagination. It is powerful because it can struggle to communicate an emotional truth, sometimes other factors like spiritual or political truth but it grips the individual viewer by either attracting their emotions or repulsing their emotions or not attracting any emotions. It is a personal response in the viewer after the artist has done thri own work by making an object.

    Fun idea for a discussion!

@ Mr Angry - Great Vid. Vancouver has such strict laws about graffiti that we are sadly lacking in it.

    @ Marti - I was I. LOL.

@ Hart - I used to work in the framing industry Back East. A good hand made frame is as priceless as the art framed within.

@ Candi - I love how you explain art.
