The Mic Is On: We’re Art Crazy . . .
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:02 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
We’re Talking About Art!

We might talk about
- What makes it art?
- How do you know it’s art?
- Is that art?
- graphic design, photography, ceramics, weaving, welding, spin art, calligraphy, graffiti, concrete, flower arranging, art therapy, music, cinema, theatre, architecture, poetry, dance
- modern, renaissance, gothic, folk, fine
- painting, drawing, sculpture, stained glass, blown glass, calligraphy
- art history, art fairs, art galleries, art in the park
- Art isn’t what you hang on a refrigerator.
- Don’t drink and draw.
And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey.
Oh, and bring a link, if you have one to share.

Hi tariq!
Welcome. What sort of art do you like. Is your grandfather named Art like Joe’s is?

Liz,
First comment, I get the same message. It’s not Joe.

Thanks and Hi Tariq

Hi, Joe!
Liz,
No, not my grandfather! My tastes are across the board, with impressionism and realism being my favorites. Go figure!
Joe said
Marti,
Isn’t there an Artsy song about a Lonesome Cowboy?
ME Strauss said
I like the impressionists too. I hae Monet’s Garden in my Living Room. The rest of our art is Modern and eclectic. What we like and can stand to look at for 19 or more years.

Slightly off topic (but I just saw the commercial and I have a short attention span so I have to ask before I forget. I tend to ramble too, please forgive me)
Has anyone seen Night at the Museum with Ben Stiller? Is it worth a rental?
Tariq Khan said
Liz,
I, too, look for things that I will like for a long time.
By the way, one of the things about Monet’s Water Lillies that floored me was that when I looked at it up close, the strokes themselves seemed so simple to do. It was the composition, and he was a master at composing those simple strokes.
The same thing with Suerat. Dots are easy, but not like he did them!

Howdy Liz and everyone! Beautiful night for Art, don’t you think?
Mrs. MZM is an artist, specializing in reproductions of the Masters like Monet, Manet, Sargent, etc. One of my favorite is her painting of Monet’s Poppy Field. It’s hanging in our guest room.

(Stumbling slightly off topic again, please forgive me) We re-watched the movie, “The Usual Suspects” the other night, and early in the movie they are in a NY apartment with this HUGE abstract painting. It was really nice though. It looked…uh…almost angelic
An interesting counterpoint to a gritty crime thriller
Marti said
Hi Robert!
Our weather was a work of art today. 70 degrees, clear (early - it clouded up later)
It was magnificent! Nature’s art is so pure.

Awesome, Robert! I envy people with artistic talent. I can’t even draw stick people - lol

Thanks for the fun discussion Liz and all. My daughter is an artist and teaches secondary school art - so I had the fun of going through through art galeries with her in NY two years ago — and I felt like an artist for a whole week:-)
I think other people’s gifted art brings out art and illuminates new appreciation in us at times. Do you agree?
Marti said
Yes, Ellen. Hi, good to have you! What a great time that must have been!
Robert Hruzek said
Liz, I got caught in the cowboy thing, too - and I hadn’t commented in several minutes!
Anyway, as I was saying… (sound of clearing voice and going harumph)
Marti, no I’ve never been to KC. And Liz, my biggest regret to my short stays in Chicago is that I’ve never made it to your museum. Always heard it’s fantastic.
Hello Ellen - I agree!
ME Strauss said
Good Night Tariq
Enjoy the evening! Thanks for coming!
ME Strauss said
Hello Ellen!
How great to see you again. I had no idea you had an artistic daughter hidden away somewhere!
Ellen Weber said
Thanks Marti- It really was a fun time and even now when I visit my daughter and her hubby in Boston we do art in a few fun ways. Last week we saw an Irish play and then walked around Thoreau’s Wadon Pond.
Two forms of art — and both brought out new parts of our friendship. Art seems to have a funny way of adding spice to a good day:-)
Marti said
That’s really neat, Ellen. It’s nice to appreciate your children as adults. So many parents have this “I don’t want them to grow up” attitude” but I think it is grand to have an adult child. You can relate to them on a whole new level.

I’m really suprised that noone has brought up the art of the written, spoken or sung (?) word.
Poetry is Art to me, as Liz can tell you. Even though it may be an off the wall style.

Thanks you Maid Liz,

Joe your poetry is art - never disparage it (not even the silly stuff - lol)

Hi Liz,
Love this topic so had to come by for a few minutes (I’m grading papers to give back tomorrow!) I wanted to be an artist but decided business professor was more secure However, my daughter’s daughter at nine years old has the makings of an artist.

ah, “job security.” As a self employed artist, those are indeed comforting words.
Ashley Cecil said
Overall my full time artwork is very rewarding and I love the independence. Although I think I am giving myself stomach ulcers from the stress of it all.
Delaney Kirk said
Hi Ashley,
Love your artwork and the fact that you donate part of the $ received to good causes. Do you go to art festivals? There’s a great one here this weekend in St Petersburg called Mainsail Art Festival.
Ashley Cecil said
Actually I don’t Delaney. They are incredibly time consuming and often not as profitable for painters (unlike a jewelry artist with a lower price range).

Hi, I have a couple of minutes to talk about art!
It’s like drinking wine; we get so intimidated about the “right” art that we don’t just enjoy what we like and what speaks to us.

Howdy, Delany! Tell your grandaughter she’s got a future in project management. She’s visualized it perfectly: it’s a lot like herding cats!

Ashley,
I understand. However, I’ve met some great artists at festivals. I have a painting by Suzy Scarborough as I met her in Florida in 2003 and have seen her at art festivals in Kansas City, Des Moines, and Tampa several times since then. Of course, now we can meet great artists through Liz’s blog!!

Hai hai! Liz, how are you?
Hi, everyone…:)
Well, to start, I’m a frustrated artist. I feel I could do some acceptable works of art. But when I get down to doing it, it’s all abstract (meaning, I can’t decipher it nor see the artwork in there) :-D

Defining art is as subjective a task as they come so I would have to say yes.

Liz, I believe Ashley and I have crossed paths occasionally. I met her on mybloglog. How she has her blog/studio/market set-up is exeptional.
I agree with her that attending festivals is not the best way for a painter to sell her work. I attended many festivals back east but was selling hand painted fabric items such as pillows, placemats and duvet covers. They are social events. I like the idea of selling online as an individual to another individual. It is private yet public at the same time online.

Well, G’morning. Sorry I missed everything last night. It turned out that at the last minute during dinner last night I had to go to the hospital in a ’support’ slash ‘chauffeur’ kind of way that just dragged on and on and…. ugh. (nothing more serious than car troubles of my folks)
I’m making a fresh pot of coffee now, and I’m going to start reading all the posts from the beginning, very slowly .. so I can think of snappy comebacks to myself and pretend I was here in person.
Marti said
Hello, HART! We will try to psychically interpret your snappy comebacks - LOL
You meanwhile, will have to psychically interpret who the actual author of the comment is, because we had quite the go-round last night. It seems the plugin was causing the pre-fill info for name, email, etc, to randomly assign a stranger’s information. So Joe is not always Joe, It’s Sheila. Or me. Or I’m Darren. It got quite amusing after a while. Missed you, glad it wasn’t too serious.
Thanks to Liz and all of the participants for a delightful evening! Hope y’all have a wonderful day!

HART (1-800-HART) said
Hi Marti! Fortunately, I have no snappy comebacks to add! Did Liz every figure out what plugin caused all this havoc? You know Liz! Or, do we? That all could have been some M.I.T. night-long experiment or something! * Mental note: Check Online Banking Balances!
I enjoyed all the links..
- Cowgirl Jessica’s Vancouver Art Gallery has some nice pictures
- I enjoyed Cowboy Mr.Angry’s YouTube video.. After his video, I got lost in related ‘Graffiti’ videos over there
- I tried to refresh many times the new wing at Cowgirl Liz’s Chicago Art Institute, but nothing changes - I think they made that up and the CAM does not refresh every 15 minutes (Those Bastards!)
- I was slightly amused reading Cowboy Robert’s claim to write and sing all the words at his wedding .. because, I did that too! 100 bottles of beer on the wall .. (Well, I wanted to anyway - but, I was sober most of the night)
- I didn’t really get Cowboy Shiela/Joe ..but, tried to browse everybody’s sites :)
My favorite site was Cowboy Tiny Gigantic and added to my bloglines! Enjoyed reading “How to be a better lover .. the definitive sex manual for good business” and a few other .pdf’s on his site - quite amusing!
As for (H)ART .. I’ve got a couple beaut’s in our house - I should take some pictures one day. Our favorites, however .. are the two prints ‘Irises’ and ‘Starry Night’ where, the full size print cost about $19.99 and the framing etc cost $20,000 or something!~~

What makes it art?
Art is when you struggle with making an image from your imagination. When the emotions and imagination inspire you to make something. I don’t care if it’s ceramics, ink drawings, collage, oil painting found objects…I think the issue is that people have “stature” invested…they are too concerned with if art is “historically correct” or not…if it can create and maintain the idea of investment. I think all that is mostly bullshit. It might be important for people who teach art hisptory or want to use art as an investment. But art is storytelling.
We tell a story to survive and share survival with each other. Art is dependant on imagination…on emotion and imagination. It is powerful because it can struggle to communicate an emotional truth, sometimes other factors like spiritual or political truth but it grips the individual viewer by either attracting their emotions or repulsing their emotions or not attracting any emotions. It is a personal response in the viewer after the artist has done thri own work by making an object.
Fun idea for a discussion!
Jessica Doyle said
@ Mr Angry - Great Vid. Vancouver has such strict laws about graffiti that we are sadly lacking in it.
@ Marti - I was I. LOL.
@ Hart - I used to work in the framing industry Back East. A good hand made frame is as priceless as the art framed within.
