The Mic is On: We’re Talking About Blogs and Blog Friends 2007!!

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

The Mic Is On

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

…Blogs and Blog Friends in 2007!

We might talk about:

blogs…

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)

Oh, and bring links about blogs bloggers to share!

–ME “Liz” Strauss

    Liz,

Compared to the rest of the commenters I feel like such a piker working in a cubicle for most of the day! A fun thing I did at work yesterday was stopping by a colleague’s cube to remind him of all the great things he’s done during a particularly stressful period and to let him know how much he’s appreciated. Way more fun (and effective) in person!

Since this is my first comment, let me say thanks for all your great writing. I’m particularly enjoying the series on creating Phil’s next book.

    Cheers,

    Here’s your first comment here . . . also 2006.

    Liz,

Another thing is the goal has to be believable for us to stop procrastinating and start doing.

But, one of the most common problems is that just as we started to set goals, immediately at the same time objections occur.

Sigh. “I will never have the guts to speak in front of people.” — that kind of thing.

I particularly use Byron Katie’s The Work to overcome this.

Just curious, anyone has this problem? What do you use to overcome it?

    Hi Liz, hi all!

Bloggers meeting - I’ve met a few bloggers in the past two years. I stopped off in London to meet Mark of Wishful Thinking. Then about twenty designers / bloggers met in Seattle every year (starting two years ago). Not all are bloggers, but a fair bit are. And a handful of those I ‘met’ through Designers who Blog.

Phoning bloggers - Let’s see … there’s Liz. Then my design group who also blog. And I just chatted with Mike of ConverStations.com this week (I’m helping a fellow blogger and needed his advice).

Sadly, I’m too far out here to attend the many blogging conferences. :-(

    Angela,

In answer to your question, blogging has been a raucous mixed bag in 2007. Liz pulled up my first comment from a little over a year ago and I’m sure I have between 500-1000 or more comments since then (Tuesday nights and the anniversary helped my average considerably).

I participated in a couple of memes that did retrospectives of past posts, and I think I created things I will forever be proud of this year.

I’m really excited to see where things go in 2008!

It’s a big world out there and an even bigger one in the on-line sphere! It’s amazing the people you meet…the differing personalities you can interact and engage with!

I’ve met individuals from all over the world on-line and I’ve met a handful of them that are out-of-state! I just met a blogger from Vegas (I’m from California). I think my goal is to meet at least one blogger from every state :)

I don’t think everyone will jump on board and it’s mostly because they’re stuck in a comfort zone that they can’t break out of. And then what I’ve experienced is that those who do join, do so for the wrong reasons or go about it the wrong way. A blog is a mission…it’s an extension of you and what you have to say. (I think I’ll shut up now for the sake of not losing myself or anyone else in this conversation)…

Hi Glenda. Hi Mike. From the winter snows to the desert sands in one sentence. Cool!

Ricardo: If I were Descartes I would say “I blog, therefore I am.” :) A more serious answer would be

    1. I can. The tools have made it easy for everyone who thinks they have something to say and a desire to listen to the voices around them a soapbox (or pub table) to stand around and be heard as they listen.

    2. Each voice in the world is important. None should be lost, even if the remnants are only in written form.

    3. To build a base, or as Liz would say - I think - a brand.

    4. It’s a way to learn what I’m thinking.

    5. It’s a way to polish my writing skills.

    6. I get to meet neat people I would never know existed otherwise.

    Hendry,

you and I are on the same part of the world (I’m above the line, further north than you).

There’s a ton of bloggers out here but not all are blogging in English. And don’t know about you, but my foreign language skills are not too hot so I’m limited at who I can converse with.

Off the top of my head, I know one person personally who blogs, a Canadian writer. But not often. Her daily thoughts don’t wrap around blogs and bloggers.

The majority of the other English speaking bloggers are only here a short bit, then gone. Their posts centre around ‘what I did the year I lived in Thailand’. Then they move back home. Wherever home is. It’s interesting to read their experiences. Almost like starting over again. With fresh eyes.

For chat - I’ve switched to Skype and threw away all my ims. It’s easier and gives my wrists a rest.

Hey Hey Liz! Yes, I’m history :-D

Ok, here’s a Bloggy question for all you expert and not so expert bloggers.

I just redesigned a template I’ve been using for a year. It looks mostly different and I added a lot of options (no plugins).

It is a new iteration of an adaptation by someone else from the original designer’s concept.

It is NOT live and will NOT be for sale, although I would like to make it available to anyone who wants it. There is a link to the originator in the style php and credit to the other adapter.

I am NOT a designer or WP Wiz, but I think it turned out pretty well.

How much credit and where do I have to put it in order to be fair to the people who did the Original designs and changes? (Yes it was open source, in case you ask).

Or should I just not bother to offer it to anyone and just use it myself?

    ???

@Joe: You want to look at the license of the theme. Is it CC or GPL or whatever.. and then comply with it.

I do think if you modify it in a way that it looks entirely different you could try releasing it. A credit to the original author is nice though, regardless of the license.

    Your first comment at Successful-blog . . .

Nice list, Liz. I wish I had something like this when I first started writing. In a lot of ways I’ve learned more about writing from blogging than I did when I just did ‘regular’ writing.

I think one of the big differences between blogging and’regular writing is that the reader knows there is a face behind the writing. Even though she didn’t blog, I think this is one of the reasons for the success of Erma Bombeck. When you read her work, you feel like you are listening to a real person.

When the blogger responds to your comments, it increases the sense of dealing with a real person. Thanks, Liz.

You can put it all in the css file, Joe. I like this one from the sqlite source code:

The author disclaims copyright to this source code. In place of a legal notice, here is a blessing:
May you do good and not evil.
May you find forgiveness for yourself and forgive others.
May you share freely, never taking more than you give.

Of course sqlite is public domain and the theme is probably gpl or cc so you can’t disclaim the copyright of the previous designers.

Liz - of course, I was a pain to my teachers… I’ve had this wit since Jr. High and it’s only taken me 30 years to grow into it. My wife (the high school teacher) groans when she hears some of the things I said and did in school.

My triumph? My 6th grade reading teacher gave my first book 5 stars on Amazon… only took me the better part of 30 years to get an A from that woman. :)

connie, it is hard and you are correct in that is the point:) it is much harder than i thought it would be.
i am realizing how i’ve lost my childhood creativity and it’s funny to see some of it come back in tiny bits. i’m now up to 61 and that includes ’sky-writing’ as an idea. it’s a fun challenge for a good cause. how’s that for positive thinking?

How could you ever remember the first?
Ask Liz, Her Way-Back just seems to work

So instead of a poem that makes no sense
A list of firsts and all past tense

In comments by number they are presented
And if they are right, Liz should be commended

#1 Richardo (first to comment tonight)
#6 Angela (her first OMN comment ever)
    #18 Mike (he’s such a joker)
#35 Char (always here to converse)
#56 Hendry (brings ideas with him)
#135 Rick (good advice as always)
    #179 Me (stupid poems weekly)
    #198 Glenda (great dancer)
    #272 Tim (teacher and student)

And lest we forget the rest of the crew
Because they all deserve their due

There was Cat and Doug and Sheila and Erin
with J Erik and Ann and Connie, all joined in

With Fat Tires to drink and Klondikes to eat
Open Mic Tuesdays just can’t be beat.

    Berma Shave

    Nite Liz

Well, I skipped about 300 comments in the middle, but out of several good things that happened via blogging this year, probably the highlight was the chance to meet other Oracle bloggers at Oracle OpenWorld 2007 in San Francisco last month. The other bloggers are definitely several rungs above me in technical knowledge, and it was valuable just to be able to listen to them. The second highlight was getting involved in Twitter and meeting a number of people there. There are probably other highlights, but I should probably save them for some type of “year in review” post on my blog. My resolution for 2008 is to become the biggest SOB of all. :)
