The Mic is On: We’re Talking About Blogs and Blog Friends 2007!!
ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 7:00 pm
It’s Like Open Mic Only Different
Here’s how it works.
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.
There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
…Blogs and Blog Friends in 2007!
We might talk about:
- Bloggers we met in person
- Bloggers we met on the phone
- Bloggers we met on their blog for the first time
- Blog posts and blogs that changed how we thought
And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)
Oh, and bring links about blogs bloggers to share!

Hi Char!
Meet Ricardo. He’s new in these parts.
How’s Christmas in a blogger, designer, mom’s home?

Whew, I can say something now that I am not the first person on the dance floor!
This is my first mic night-excited to be here and a part of the conversations!

Hi Ricardo. Welcome.
Liz - Christmas is coming along - just have to get my youngest healthy before Christmas day - she’s been sick for a week.

Iowa bloggers say lots of great things about you Liz. Tim, Tom, Sandy, Mike, Delaney all sing your praises. I feel like we are already old friends!
Ricardo Bueno said
@ Liz: I couldn’t help myself
@ Mike: lol. Sorry…no relation
I once had someone tell me, “Stop. I’ll do business with you because of your name alone.”

I am a fairly new blogger-just a few months old.
But…blogging has been an amazing ride. I have met great friend from the Iowa Blogo Nostra; many you know and love-Tim, Tom, Sandy
ME Liz Strauss said
Char. . .
This one is yours
Great post! I have two rather obvious items to add to the list.
1. Spell check - or atleast, proof your own words before hitting send.
2. Email in plain, old-fashioned English when possible. Not everyone knows what LOL means, nor do they wish to.

How ’bout you all? How has blogging in 2007 been?

@ Mike: hey…where’s my klondike?
@ Angela: pretty cool here isn’t it?
Thanks for checking the site out
But I have to give credit to Liz…she inspired me! It would be disingenuous of me otherwise.
I’m watching the video on “Kids Ask Teachers” as we speak

Hey Angela,
Sure we know Tim, Tom, and Sandy.
They’ve all been to Open Comment Night once or twice. Tim might even show up tonight. Sometimes his students come too.

Blogging in 2007 has been about refocusing.
I am not too satisfied with the outcome mainly because I go around and pursue different ventures.
Angela Maiers said
Liz-Tim was talking about the great time he had last week. I couldn’t resist coming!
ME Liz Strauss said
Char that’s the first comment you ever left on this blog. In August of 2006. The post was about how to write a business email.
Ricardo Bueno said
@ Angela: hey, I wouldn’t have guessed that you’re fairly new to the blogging platform! I suppose it’s easy when you have something to say right?
@ Mike: the next time I write LOL I’ll put a narration next to it [Ricardo is laughing out-loud] ROFL
ME Liz Strauss said
Hendry,
You always had lots of ideas. How can we help you get them all going in the same direction for 2008?
Angela Maiers said
I had a great blog coach getting me started-Mike Sansone! How long have you been blogging?
ME Liz Strauss said
Angela!
Tim and I once talked about open comment night as being kids playing in the back yard.
Angela Maiers said
Liz-I am getting that feeling already!
ME Liz Strauss said
Ah have a beer, Angela, that feeling will go away in a while.

Hendry-just checked out your post on favorite blog tools. Great stuff!
ME Liz Strauss said
Hendry,
Here’s your first comment here . . . also 2006.
Liz,
Another thing is the goal has to be believable for us to stop procrastinating and start doing.
But, one of the most common problems is that just as we started to set goals, immediately at the same time objections occur.
Sigh. “I will never have the guts to speak in front of people.†— that kind of thing.
I particularly use Byron Katie’s The Work to overcome this.
Just curious, anyone has this problem? What do you use to overcome it?

Hi Liz, hi all!
Bloggers meeting - I’ve met a few bloggers in the past two years. I stopped off in London to meet Mark of Wishful Thinking. Then about twenty designers / bloggers met in Seattle every year (starting two years ago). Not all are bloggers, but a fair bit are. And a handful of those I ‘met’ through Designers who Blog.
Phoning bloggers - Let’s see … there’s Liz. Then my design group who also blog. And I just chatted with Mike of ConverStations.com this week (I’m helping a fellow blogger and needed his advice).
Sadly, I’m too far out here to attend the many blogging conferences.
Rick Cockrum said

Hi there, first-time listenener, first post
MIke said
Angela,
In answer to your question, blogging has been a raucous mixed bag in 2007. Liz pulled up my first comment from a little over a year ago and I’m sure I have between 500-1000 or more comments since then (Tuesday nights and the anniversary helped my average considerably).
I participated in a couple of memes that did retrospectives of past posts, and I think I created things I will forever be proud of this year.
I’m really excited to see where things go in 2008!
Mike
ME Liz Strauss said
Hey Joe!
Glenda, please forgive me for not saying “Hey” sooner!
Hendry Lee said
I think moving them all at the same time is not a good idea. I tried and it failed miserably.
Personally I have decided which one (or two) to pursue, but how do you analyze different ideas and make sure what you pick is the one that has the most potential?
Do you base your decision on “gut feeling?”
ME Liz Strauss said
It was indeed very cool to meet you, Glenda! You are a blogging whirlwind!
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hey Rick! Thanks Angela.
Ricardo Bueno said
@ Angela: I think that last question was directed at me…
I’ve been blogging since December ‘06 on a site called Active Rain. The blog you linked to called The Industry Report is my most recent creation. I’m caught in trying to define it’s audience. I don’t want to be pushy… I want to inform. The way you do… Like with the issue presented in the video you wrote about.
MIke said
Glenda,
I hope Darrell’s not checking in on us! He’s probably still working on that pencil conundrum… Laughing Out Loud

Hey Liz,
Do you remember My first comment? Neither do I, it’s been over 2 years already, My Dear Blogging Friend.
Angela Maiers said
Ricardo-great topic. I am doing the same. My original audience was educators, but they have been REALLY slow to respond and REALLY REALLY REALLY slow in understanding blogging in general. The up side is that it has encouraged me to step outside of my “field” and in doing so, look at the amazing people I have met!
MIke said
Liz,
Could you check and see if a longish comment I made in response to Angela’s question is being held in some spam-filter purgatory?
Klondike to Ricardo, by the way!!

Hendry Lee said
Cat,
I can’t help but being a lonely blogger. I live in a small town somewhere in Sumatera island, Indonesia.
And none of my peers is blogging.
So no, I’ve never met a blogger. I never phone one. But yes, I chatted with them in IM and at places like this.
Blogging conference. Hm… may be one day.
Does that make you feel better?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Thanks Liz! Need to find a way recharge the whirlwind! But isn’t Chicago windy? Hmmm, can I wait for a charge til then?

Angela Maiers said
Hey Tim-I took your advice, and I am here for my first mic night. Lovin it!
MIke said
Greetings, o great Tim! Have a cherry cordial and peppermint Klondike!!
Timothy Johnson said
Hey Mike - No more fat tire klondikes left, eh? Probably for the better.
Hi Angela - I knew you would love it… these people are great.
Hendry Lee said
@Angela: thanks for pointing that out.
@Liz: seems like I am still in the same position and there was not much progress huh?
May be the problem is my belief system then. I believe I could juggle things around, but the fact is that I only handle at most 3 balls at the same time…
That’s why I need to refocus.
MIke said
Glenda,
A bit of a U.S. history lesson. Chicago earned the monicker “the windy city” not for any meteorological phenomenon, but for the remarkable bloviation skills of her politicians!
Mike
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Hi Mr T!
Mike, I don’t know why I couldn’t see your pencil…
Timothy Johnson said
Glenda… how’s my favorite dance partner?
MIke said
Tim,
Did I mention the cherry cordial used real kirsch? And ethanol. Raspy wasn’t happy with the gravity of the kirsch alone.
Mike
Hendry Lee said
@Mike: Ok, thanks. I guess this is what they talked about every so often about “failing fast” to succeed.
I certainly get only a handful of success, although all of them seem to be great ideas.
Ricardo Bueno said
It’s a big world out there and an even bigger one in the on-line sphere! It’s amazing the people you meet…the differing personalities you can interact and engage with!
I’ve met individuals from all over the world on-line and I’ve met a handful of them that are out-of-state! I just met a blogger from Vegas (I’m from California). I think my goal is to meet at least one blogger from every state
I don’t think everyone will jump on board and it’s mostly because they’re stuck in a comfort zone that they can’t break out of. And then what I’ve experienced is that those who do join, do so for the wrong reasons or go about it the wrong way. A blog is a mission…it’s an extension of you and what you have to say. (I think I’ll shut up now for the sake of not losing myself or anyone else in this conversation)…
Rick Cockrum said
Hi Glenda. Hi Mike. From the winter snows to the desert sands in one sentence. Cool!
Ricardo: If I were Descartes I would say “I blog, therefore I am.”
A more serious answer would be
1. I can. The tools have made it easy for everyone who thinks they have something to say and a desire to listen to the voices around them a soapbox (or pub table) to stand around and be heard as they listen.
2. Each voice in the world is important. None should be lost, even if the remnants are only in written form.
3. To build a base, or as Liz would say - I think - a brand.
4. It’s a way to learn what I’m thinking.
5. It’s a way to polish my writing skills.
6. I get to meet neat people I would never know existed otherwise.
Timothy Johnson said
Hi Rick and Joe and Liz and Char (and Ricardo and Hendry and any other newcomers I may have missed)
Angela - did you see the write-up on the Des Moines Blogganostra in the Des Moines Business Record?
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Very well, Mr T. Thank you.
Angela Maiers said
@Rick-you are wonderful with words. I love the poems on your site. I agree, blogs are a way to learn what others are thinking, but more so what we are thinking ourselves.
Timothy Johnson said
Glenda, you’re saving me a dance for later, right? I have Karen Carpenter’s Christmas Waltz cued up for when Liz opens the dance floor.

So Mike, in other words, Chicago is full of hot air?
ME Liz Strauss said
Hi Rick!
Talk about making an entrance!
MIke said
Hendry,
Now that Moses, er, Rick has arrived with the stone tablets in comment 86, I’m not sure I’ve much to add, except that I’ve described my own blog as a Dexter’s Laboratory of ideas, so I’m pretty comfortable with failing fast concept. Take all further advice with that in mind…
Mike
Angela Maiers said
@ Tim-yes I did. I just did a post on it today! It was great! Are you done with finals this week?
cat said
Hendry,
you and I are on the same part of the world (I’m above the line, further north than you).
There’s a ton of bloggers out here but not all are blogging in English. And don’t know about you, but my foreign language skills are not too hot so I’m limited at who I can converse with.
Off the top of my head, I know one person personally who blogs, a Canadian writer. But not often. Her daily thoughts don’t wrap around blogs and bloggers.
The majority of the other English speaking bloggers are only here a short bit, then gone. Their posts centre around ‘what I did the year I lived in Thailand’. Then they move back home. Wherever home is. It’s interesting to read their experiences. Almost like starting over again. With fresh eyes.
For chat - I’ve switched to Skype and threw away all my ims. It’s easier and gives my wrists a rest.
Hey Hey Liz! Yes, I’m history

Ricardo Bueno said
Hey Rick!
Love the comment! Especially the quote: “I blog, therefore I am.”
What I especially enjoy most is the learning and meeting new people!
Joe (the alter-ego) said
Ok, here’s a Bloggy question for all you expert and not so expert bloggers.
I just redesigned a template I’ve been using for a year. It looks mostly different and I added a lot of options (no plugins).
It is a new iteration of an adaptation by someone else from the original designer’s concept.
It is NOT live and will NOT be for sale, although I would like to make it available to anyone who wants it. There is a link to the originator in the style php and credit to the other adapter.
I am NOT a designer or WP Wiz, but I think it turned out pretty well.
How much credit and where do I have to put it in order to be fair to the people who did the Original designs and changes? (Yes it was open source, in case you ask).
Or should I just not bother to offer it to anyone and just use it myself?
???

@Mike - ROFLMAO
@Angela - it’s our virtual blogospheric snack of choice (although tonight I’m going Klondike-free… I’m actually sitting by the Christmas tree in my favorite club chair nursing a peach-pear Italian soda)… and yes, real men drink peach-pear Italian sodas.
Rick Cockrum said
Hi Doug!
Hey Tim. Did your students survive?
Thank you, Angela. What you said about discovering our own thoughts is what I meant. I often have a tough time seeing things clearly until they’re outside.
So you’ve been to Chicago, Mike?
Angela Maiers said
Thanks Tim!
MIke said
Hey Angela,
Hopefully this answer doesn’t get swallowed up. Chris Cree started passing out virtual Klondike bars several months back. Later, during a bout of delirium, I imagined that the Russian mafia was selling custom designer Klondikes out of the trunks of Mercedes parked near Liz’s place. It’s become an annoying running gag…just because I can!
Mike
Joe (the alter-ego) said
Hey Doug (60) Welcome!
Angela, Klondikes are a favorite of just about everyone here. I think Chris Cree first brought a bunch to an OMT about 2 years ago so it just ended up being part of the ambience. (Oh, and spelling doesn’t count either)
Hendry Lee said
Cat, that’s true. I have several friends I meet at online forums who blog too, but in native language.
There is one I meet everyday. She is my sister.
does that count?
@Joe: You want to look at the license of the theme. Is it CC or GPL or whatever.. and then comply with it.
I do think if you modify it in a way that it looks entirely different you could try releasing it. A credit to the original author is nice though, regardless of the license.
Credit usually appears in the footer.
Angela Maiers said
I am fitting right in-I LOVE Klondikes!
MIke said
Rick,
Not only have I been there, I lived there for seven years (and I have the nightmare commuting flashback to prove it!).
Mike
Timothy Johnson said
The great thing, Angela, is because they are virtual, there are no calories, and you can create any flavor you want.
And you’re fitting into this crowd for more reasons than just blogospheric snack choice.
Doug Bulleit said

MIke said
Tim,

Mike
Joe (the alter-ego) said
Mike, that goes without saying. I would definetly attribute credit.
I might not have phrased the question properly.
How do I go about sharing the new iteration while still giving credit to the originators but letting people know this one is mine without dissing anyone?
Timothy Johnson said
Mike, we’ll blame 113 on Beau…and the Italian Soda.

Rick,
Your first comment at Successful-blog . . .
Nice list, Liz. I wish I had something like this when I first started writing. In a lot of ways I’ve learned more about writing from blogging than I did when I just did ‘regular’ writing.
I think one of the big differences between blogging and’regular writing is that the reader knows there is a face behind the writing. Even though she didn’t blog, I think this is one of the reasons for the success of Erma Bombeck. When you read her work, you feel like you are listening to a real person.
When the blogger responds to your comments, it increases the sense of dealing with a real person. Thanks, Liz.

Hey Liz,
I always use the preview as I’m writing to see how it appears on the screen. And as you, I use spell check.
I actually read my post after publishing, sometimes I still see an error or two.
I think one of the bigger problems with people who write online, especially the “prosâ€, is that they seem to rush to publish. They forget some of the very basic things that you mention.
Thanks,

Great post, Mr T. Equilibrium covers it all. I’ll need to write my letter to santa. Great idea.
Sheila Scarborough said
Hi everyone, can only stop by for a minute but couldn’t resist talking blogs.
Have added social media topics to travel and drag racing; have a couple of posts up at Every Dot Connects about being a grown-up online and the concept of “spirit and intent.”
Not sure when I’m going to fit sleep into all of this writing….:)
Timothy Johnson said
Mike… I used to think I was pretty good at randomness and creativity… dude, I bow humbly in your presence
Char said
Liz - next time I see you I will make you your own Klondike cake!
MIke said
I’m guessing Glenda will ask for something red and Italian, and I’m not talking about Fabio in a Santa suit!
ME Liz Strauss said
Mike,
I’m still wondering . . . how did you come across a place called “Pimp that snack?”
Go ahead say you did a search for Klondike bars. uh-huh, yeah, uh-huh, sure you did.
Timothy Johnson said
Glenda - thank you so much!
Liz - since coal is a fossil fuel, and therefore of some monetary value, maybe Santa needs to reengineer his motivational strategy on the correlation of behavior to emotional intelligence. He can fill my stocking with coal all he wants… papa wants a warm house.
ME Liz Strauss said
Sheila!
I slept once . . . I don’t remember a thing that I said.
Joe (the alter-ego) said
Wow Liz, You really must have a Way-Back Machine. I have no idea how you could remember things that far back let alone FIND them.
ME Liz Strauss said
Joe,
You, of all people, should know. I live inside your computer.
ME Liz Strauss said
Either that, or I’m such a good writer . . . that I make ‘em up and you guys just can’t tell.
MIke said
Tim,
Thank you. It’s one of the things that convinces me of the existence of the greater consciousness, because I’m not cipherin’ these out on my own…
Mike
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
funny Mike! The big guy will say I can ask all I like, but it ain’t going to happen. Tho Fabio in a red something had possibilities!
Rick Cockrum said
Tim - Remember. This is the man who came up with confectioner’s haggis.
Even Santa would dig on those.

hey, is there any of that fat tire left? can someone toss one this way?
ME Liz Strauss said
Little Timmy,
Are you trying to prove that you were a pain to your teachers? [big economic theory grin -- too funny]
Hendry Lee said
Yes I would say that Liz is actually very organized. If only I am half as organized as you. LOL.
MIke said
Liz,
I’m ROFLMAO, but the space next to the big G in the toolbar still says “Klondike Bar”, and that result was #5. The real skill is in quickly discarding serious matches in favor of the ridiculous!
Mike
ME Liz Strauss said
Erin!
Yeah, I can dig out a Fat Tire for you . . . how’s the durtbagz??!!!
Timothy Johnson said
Rick and Mike - I am giggling uncontrollably at the MCH post…. I can hardly type.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Liz, do you know much about Frozen Pea Friday? Just thinking we could mention it here, in support of Susan.
Rick Cockrum said
Hi erin!

Rick,
Yet another piece of evidence for the power of the Law of Attraction! I never saw the Double Chocolate rolls before and I’ve never seen them since, but I was certain I would find what I needed in five minutes and there they were…

Hi Sheila and Erin! Klondikes all around!

Glenda,
Your first words here were . . .
Hi everyone, am I too late for the party? Just taking a break from my virtual book tour interviews to pop in and say hi.

btw, of course, the peas — tell the whole story.
MIke said
Tim,
That is a true story and those babies went like hot cakes! People really didn’t believe it when we told them what they were!!
Mike
Timothy Johnson said
Liz - of course, I was a pain to my teachers… I’ve had this wit since Jr. High and it’s only taken me 30 years to grow into it. My wife (the high school teacher) groans when she hears some of the things I said and did in school.
My triumph? My 6th grade reading teacher gave my first book 5 stars on Amazon… only took me the better part of 30 years to get an A from that woman.
MIke said
Way to go, Tim! Apparently you’ve aged well…
ME Liz Strauss said
Gee Tim,
After 30 years, she’s finally kissing up to you. That’s a triumph to any jr. high boy you’ll ever find!!
Ricardo Bueno said
Hi Erin…
Small world… Naomi over at IttyBiz wrote a blog post today referencing your work
MIke said
Um, Liz, we may have to alert the authorities about the situation…
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
whew, that’s a relief. I thought my first comment might be REALLY dorky!
I’ll see if can find Connie to explain Frozen Pea Friday. Brb
ME Liz Strauss said
Um, Mike,
the part where Tim has aged well?
Rick Cockrum said
We have plenty of the rolls here, Mike. Have a talk with your mafia cronies.
Timothy Johnson said
Glenda - given this crowd and these conversations, “really dorky” is highly relative.

I didn’t know you two were seeing each other!!
How special!!
Rick Cockrum said
Tim crowned Mike king of the randomly creative, then you brought up Pimp my Snack, so in comment 187 I found the link to a post Mike did on Mini Confectioner’s Haggis. They just seemed to fit together so well. Now, of course, he can’t find them in his neighborhood.

hi liz! hi mike! hi ricardo! (i’m waving emphatically right now, hence the exclamation points).
durtbagz is looking much better, thanks to you, liz!! the suggestion on how to sell? fantastic, people already are telling me it’s easier.
ricardo, it’s nice to meet another naomi fan. i love that girl. we lovingly call each other foul things.
mike, how are things? i skimmed past about half of the klondike conversation…it made me want cold stone. but i opted for the fat tire instead.
MIke said
Tim,
Perhaps you should consider tittering or tweetering…
Mike
Connie Reece said
Hi, Glenda. Got that thumb speeding over the keyboard, I see. Voted for you today — love it when people send Twitter reminders.

@ Mike: lol. Don’t worry about it… A secret cave huh?
@ Connie: Hi there!
@ Everyone: So…so being that some of you are using twitter, are any of you using Utterz? Do you find a difference? One being easier to use over the other? ….
MIke said
Erin,
Personally, I think you made a good choice!
Mike
Timothy Johnson said
Mike, if I teetered on twittering, there’d be tattling and tut-tutting to terminate any transacting. And triple trouble for tittering on tweetering.
Hendry Lee said
Talking about twitter, I just started one too. And was twittering this open mic several minutes ago.
MIke said
Well, I’ll not try to say #245 with a mouthful of crackers, that’s for sure! LOL

Oh my..so many T words in one message!

Mike,
Are you talking with crackers again?
Timothy Johnson said
But it’s OK to say it with a mouth full of Klondikes
Ann said
A twitter tongue twister…
erin said
mike, you’re from scottsdale? we’re neighbors!
Connie Reece said
Hi, Ricardo! Excuse me while I puke after reading Tim’s excessive alliteration. **gag**
Back to Utterz. I do use it and find it very easy. Problem is that, like with Twitter or any other network, there is no way to keep up with the volume of posts. it’s a nice way of breaking out of the 140 character limit of Twitter and doing something a bit different.
Timothy Johnson said
Hey Liz… that would make for an awesome open mic night theme sometime… everyone had to speak in tongue twisters for one evening… would slow down conversation but certain make it interesting.
Glenda Watson Hyatt said
Thanks for your vote, Connie. I try to tweet reminders not too often since having my knuckles rapped for being spammy. @bfy provides more regular updates.
Wishing for a Thumb 2.0 for Christmas
Connie Reece said
Klondikes? Who’s got the klondike bars. Liz, make ‘em share!
ME Liz Strauss said
So, Tim,
Seeing as how you’re saying something silly and yet strangely sagelike on a stage like this, your insights seem simply splendid and spectacular in a most scholarly way, of course.
MIke said
So Erin, where are you?
And Liz, there’s nothing wrong with talking to crackers (unless they start talking back).
Mike
Ricardo Bueno said
@ Erin: the site looks great…(I’ll spend some more time on it)
Naomi is pretty awesome…I like her conversational style. What was pretty cool is we spoke the other day on the phone. You kinda feel like you know a person already from having read their blog.
Hey Liz,
It was awesome talking to you earlier
Thanks!
ME Liz Strauss said

MIke said
Connie!
Cherry cordial and peppermint tonight. Enjoy!

Connie Reece said
Glenda, it always seems to be someone different who reminds me — Susan Reynolds or Laura Fitton or Chris Brogan. I’ve even sent reminders myself. It helps because I always mean to vote but it’s easy to get sidetracked and forget to do it. So the minute I see a tweet about it, I click that link and vote for my favorite “I Can Do It Myself” blogger.
erin said
klondikes won’t fly nearly as far as dry, crushed crackers. although the crunchy chocolate could get some distance.
utterz makes me laugh. maybe because i grew up in southern missouri, but i automatically think of a cow when i see it. even though it’s spelled a bit diff’ernt (that’s how we’d say it in missouri-talk).

Thanks, Mike! Don’t mind if I do.

ricardo, thanks for the props on the site. i’m still working on a couple of things (look for a theme for the sign contest starting in january to narrow things down a bit). see liz? i’m learning:)
funny that you mentioned speaking on the phone. i talked with liz the other day and another friend (christine from selfmadechick.com) and the same thing happened. i love that.
mike, i’m in the ugly red-headed step-child known as so sco or south scottsdale for the non-residents.
liz, i have to tell you, i love love love your post from today. reading your stuff makes me happy.
ME Liz Strauss said
This is Tim’s first comment here . . .
Liz - insightful post. Blogging has proven to be a wonderful outlet for honing my writing skills and sharing ideas and concepts with others. I’ve made some wonderful connections with others in six short months. Jazz and writing do go together so well and nothing stirs my writing muse more than a little big band or rat pack or more modern jazz. My wife is a writing and English teacher and I think she’s almost convinced of the value of bloggging to hone writing skills. Glad I stumbled across your blog.

I can hear in your voice you’re having fun with your business again! Yeah!
erin said
oh mike, i have some pictures from this weekend i’m going to post on my facebook that you might like. after a certain number of martinis on saturday night, i grabbed my cousin’s mullet wig and evidently created a character that i would not brake for the rest of the evening. i still have to edit the video. i think i’m going to title it, ‘would you buy a bag from this lady? sure-shootin’!’
Timothy Johnson said
Liz’s laughing lilt elucidating my line eliminates ludicrous links
Connie Reece said
Glenda- you probably saw that Susan had biopsy which was positive for cancer. She used package of frozen peas as an ice bag after the procedure. We got to kidding her about it to keep her spirits up … and one thing led to another.
Now everybody is redoing their avatar to put peas in the background — i.e. a pea-vatar. And we have declared Fridays on Twitter to be Frozen Pea Fridays … because …

It’s time for me to say good night. It’s been another fun filled frolic.

liz, it is true. i stopped worrying why things weren’t going how i expected and started thinking about helping others. i’m an only child…this can be difficult sometimes. anyway, i started brainstorming on how i could help my friends, online and off, using durtbagz or not. and then i started having fun again. ever heard of that happening? haha. please feel the sarcasm i’m conveying.
Connie Reece said
Just so happens that Susan’s mastectomy is scheduled for our first Frozen Pea Friday. And on that day we are launching a website to raise money for breast cancer research through the American Cancer Society. It’s called … of course … the Frozen Pea Fund.
So if you make a pea-vatar, upload it to our Flickr group, http://flickr.com/groups/frozenpeafriday … and we will put thumbnails from the Flickr group on the Frozen Pea Fund web site.
So vote for Glenda every day … and tweet your peas on Friday and make a donation.

I need to bug out as well… it’s been a swell night Liz… I’m assuming the next two weeks will be “off” due to the holidays.
I wish you all the merriest of Christmases and the happies of new years. I actually probably won’t be on open mic night until January 15th then, because I will be hanging with my SWAT buddies on the 8th.

currently, i’m working on a creative project where you come up with a list of 100 things you can do for whatever cause you need. i’m doing 100 ways to market my bag biz, but you could do it to come up with new ideas for anything. it is incredible what you can come up with when you get rid of all of the junk you’ve thought of before.
has anybody done this exercise? it’s hard (i’ve been doing it almost 2 hrs and i’m on #58), but pretty interesting. i found it on katie konrath’s blog, getfreshminds.com. allegedly the last 25 or so are where you really come up with the good stuff, aka let the limits go.

Well, I skipped about 300 comments in the middle, but out of several good things that happened via blogging this year, probably the highlight was the chance to meet other Oracle bloggers at Oracle OpenWorld 2007 in San Francisco last month. The other bloggers are definitely several rungs above me in technical knowledge, and it was valuable just to be able to listen to them. The second highlight was getting involved in Twitter and meeting a number of people there. There are probably other highlights, but I should probably save them for some type of “year in review” post on my blog. My resolution for 2008 is to become the biggest SOB of all.
