Truly Unique and Outstanding Blogs — Recap Week 7

ME Liz Strauss wrote this at 12:56 pm

A Recap of the Facts

Finding Ideas Outside of the Box logo 2

On Monday, February 26, I started a quest to find 200 Unique Blogs. . . . I said that the blogs I am looking for

are one-of-a kind, stand-out, nothing-like-it, wow-will-you-look-at-that. only-one, wish-I-had-that-idea blogs. Every blog in the bunch will be outstanding in its own way.

Then I restated the definition:
A unique and outstanding blog is one so compelling and remarkable that it sticks with you — days later you still want to tell folks to experience it. A unique and outstaninding blog has an amazing impact on a reader. It is unforgettable to both the adult and the kid in you.

Did You Think I Dropped the Ball?

No way. Not on this one. I’ve been looking. Right now this makes somewhere near 75 of them. At 200, I’ll look them all over, take some out, and look some more. I am bound and determined.

A few more Outstanding Blogs

Here are 15 more possibilities. Do you have any you’d like to add to the next list?

  1. No more blank tapes
  2. http://nomoreblanktapes.wordpress.com/

  3. The In-sect
  4. http://www.in-sect.com/

  5. World Photo Blog
  6. http://www.worldphotoblog.com/

  7. equivocality
  8. http://www.equivocality.com/

  9. Momo Freaks Out
  10. http://www.momofreaksout.com/

  11. Taking Your Camera on the Road
  12. http://www.cameraontheroad.com/gallery_of_photography

  13. Wetpaint
  14. http://www.wetpaint.com/

  15. Listen To Your Kids
  16. http://www.listentoyourkids.net/

  17. We Feel Fine
  18. http://www.wefeelfine.org/

  19. Suggestica
  20. http://www.suggestica.com/

  21. Savage Chickens
  22. http://www.savagechickens.com/

  23. ping mag
  24. http://www.pingmag.jp/

  25. 25 peeps
  26. http://www.25peeps.com/

  27. found_drama
  28. http://blog.founddrama.net/

  29. BLOG ZICHTBARE ZAKEN
  30. http://zichtbarezaken.web-log.nl/zichtbarezaken/

I’ve only two things left to say:

I’ll be looking . . . are you still looking with me?

Have you seen any unique and outstanding blogs? . . .

UPDATE: I wondered at certain comments that were made about 25peeps when I put up this post. This morning it was linked in a post by In-Sect and I saw that it was updated with new pictures from my last look. What a mistake I made not realizing the direction in which this blog would inevitably go. The overall impact of the 25 photos has become increasingly more sexually graphic from where the blog began. To me that’s a sign the blog has lost it’s focus. I have removed it from the list of potential contenders.

    I’ve become quite fond of 101 Cookbooks at http://101cookbooks.com/. Here’s why…

There was a time (when I had a kitchen with more counterspace) that I loved to cook…it was almost a hobby. Over the last few years, I’ve lost my patience for cooking (and gained a kitchen with very little counterspace…yes, there is a connection). I like the “5 ingredients in 15 minutes” recipes because I can get dinner cooked faster after work.

But this blog has made start thinking about cooking differently, and turned me on to resources I would not have found. And for the recipes that I just wouldn’t make (too much work, primary ingredients that I don’t like, etc.), I still love to read how she opens up each post.

    Liz,
I went out in search of people the other day who were living the hero’s journey, people who were listening to the call of the ONE BIG THING that would have them living the life they imagine. This is what I found:

    Hi Whitney!
What a great review! I think that blog is a special one too — for many of the same reasons that you outline here. Of course, none would include that I actually cook. :)

I’m going to have to look, I’m not sure, it might already be on an earlier part of the list . . . the next recap I’m going to play out all of the blogs so far. :)

You should give 25 Peeps a try. I think it’s over a year old by now. Quite a few poeple I know have given it a try. It’s harder than you might think to stay on there. A Person needs a fan club of supporters to keep going back and clicking the picture. :)

Hello. Thank you for including both my blogs in your round up – I’m thrilled. :)

There are loads of wonderful blogs out there, I guess ‘unique’ is the clincher you’re after.

One of my favourite blogs is The Amazing Adventures of Diet Girl:

    http://www.dietgirl.org

Written by my favourite blogger who also lives here:

    http://www.shauny.org/pussycat

The aforementioned is, as the name would suggest, a diet blog and the protagonist has been keeping it for six years. She has completely turned her life around in the process, and lost a substantial amount of weight. Diet blogs are dime a dozen, but Diet Girl’s amazing journey here is engaging whether you are actively trying to lose weight or stay on a reasonably even keel and lead a healthy lifestyle (I’m the latter).

Another wonderful blog is ‘I Like’. The blogger, Anne, simply records links to websites she likes with a teensy write-up.

    http://www.ilike.org.uk

Thanks again, and good luck with your quest!

    10 Essential Plug-ins for WordPress Version 2.1 - Related Posts | www.Recruiting-USA.com said

[...] Considering that some blog posts take an hour or more to research, write, and get posted wouldn’t it be nice if that work could still help get you readers even months later? Well that is exactly what the related posts plug-in does; it helps you leverage your previous posts by presenting a list of additional articles that are related by keyword to the article in question. What that means is that as you write articles, at the end of each will be a list of other articles which are related in some way, giving the reader a sort of "suggested reading" list at the end of each article. And those old articles that you have written on a particular subject which would normally just live out their declining years in the archives, will now show up in the related posts list to give your readers a chance to bring them back to life so to speak. One of my friends, Liz Strauss, of Successful Bloggers, uses the related posts plug-in concept (can’t say if she uses the same exact plug-in) to provide her readership with related material to each post she makes. If you check out her article on Truly Unique and Outstanding Blogs — Recap Week 7, you will see that at the end of the article, there are 3 more articles in what appears to be a series. The plug-in did the research for the readers and served up additional material that you should be interested in reading. Now does the fact that Liz is an "A"List Blogger come from having the related post plugin on her blog, or does she use it because she is a smart and savvy blogger and knows that is how to best serve her readership – and serving her readership well, she has become an A List Blogger. Liz -

I’m sure someone of your caliber would have lasted a lot more than a week on any list of significance.

Thanks for the sweet words. It’s good to be back (although I have been lurking here from time to time). Now all I have to do is figure out what to do with Blogoplex. Seems all I have to do to squelch my creativity (what little I have) is to bring the blog back to life.

    Oh well, maybe in time.

Just wanted to add a couple of things – the second isn’t a blog, but is certainly a unique twist on a common theme.

The first is two posts – one I wrote for Your Cre8tivity and the post that inspired it. My post is Training Creativity Out of Your Life and the post that inspired it is on Scaffolding for Writers and is called Imagine Being Two Years Old.

The second is, of all things, a movie website that has an interesting interactivity and a creative take on a meme. It is the site for The Golden Compass. The meme allows you to determine your “daemon” and then – for the next 12 days, allows input from your friends to transform your “daemon” Its that interactivity that can promote conversation in a fun way and that I think is a highly creative take on the standard memes and quizzes.

These additions are a nice bunch to add to the list of contenders. Although the last uses that dreadfully inaccurate term meme playing with a daemon makes it worth checking out. :)
