Mark J Carter
Mark is a social media maven who’s bent on making the world a better place. He’s spends his time in social pursuits for “Networking for Cause,” and helping Tim Sanders with this new Saving the World at Work Community.
In the city of Chicago, Mark is the networker to know. Every night he’s at a different event. Mark’s brings us that wisdom on how he’s using social media in the world of nonprofits.
Saving the World with Social Media
1. How social media is changing the face of marketing & PR for non-profits and causes
2. Learn how getting involved and promoting your favorite cause increases YOUR visibility, builds your network and increases your social media effectiveness
3. Why large scale events (such as www.Twestival.com) and new web communities (like www.SavingTheWorld.net) are focusing solely on causes and giving everyone a voice
4. How to build your business in less time by teaming with communities (both online and offline)
5. Roadblocks non-profits & causes face when “getting started” in the social media world (and how to overcome them)
Ask Mark how he can get so much done. C’mon let’s talk social media with him!

Carter,
You must be constantly running with all of the social media nonprofit stuff you do! What’s the hardest part?
Looks like Carter is stuck in traffic. So sorry about that. He’s on his way this minute.
Hello!
I’m curious to hear how Mark manages/streamlines his social media.
I’ve gotta mention this URL while Mark’s coming – http://www.bloggersunite.org/ – I can give anyone who’s interested a sneak peek. So if you’re a non-profit or any entity promoting a cause via an event, it’s up your alley. Just thought it was relevant.
Here’s a question: How do you save the world with social media in this down economy? Lots of us don’t have the capital we’d like.
Hey, Carter!
Glad you made it!
Hey Easton!
Thanks for the link and the question. I’ll leave it to Carter to talk!
Also I’m considering donating like 5% of my business revenue to Kiva or a similar site. (Well, in Kiva’s case, that would mostly mean dedicating but not really donating.) Is that a good idea? Like how to use that to encourage purchases without sounding preachy.
In this down economy it seems like social media is a low cost way to get word of mouth marketing out there
Hello everyone.
Hey guys! 🙂
And getting involved with causes (like http://www.bloggersunite.org/) is a great way to get people to listen
@Easton I like the idea of encouraging and matching donations. I think @copyblogger and @ChrisBrogan did that at one time or another.
That’s a good idea Vicky.
Of course, you may need a cap so it doesn’t get too expensive
Or get a sponsor (corporate or otherwise)
How do you pitch to a sponsor?
Go for it Carter!
What causes or community initiatives are you involved with/want to get involved with now?
To pitch a sponsor: first, find out what charities they’re interested in/involved with, then find out what kind of events they want to hold
I would love to work with General Mills turning Box Tops for Education into some sort of currency for books, museums, events, ect… for kids who can’t afford these things.
and RIF or Scholastic books.
Have you checked with community programs for RIF/Scholastic books?
Not yet.. I like the GM Box tops because their on practically every cereal they make.
Have a couple of connections that may help.. Hoping
I know RIF does corporate sponsorships.. But I wanted to get a currency progam on board first.
My big issue is time what about you guys?
Time plays a role…it’s just a matter of making more time (you know, the 25th hour in the day)
I think I need two of those 🙂
Mark,
Just curious to hear more about http://Twestival.com and how similar events are changing how folks use social media to do good.
John
Twestival (http://www.ChicagoTwestival.com) is a great example of people using social media to create awareness around a cause
I love the idea that @Twestival is for something as simple as clean water… Something we all can relate to and support!
It’s great to see how people can “tweet” and next thing you know it’s a global campaign
My prediction is that where SM and Twitter will really make their mark is in Social Entrepreneurship (non ROI based numbers)
Sounds like what Danny Brown is doing with http://12for12k.org
I really want to check out what they’re doing at http://12for12k.org, I believe they have a FB group? Don’t they?
With social media anyone (with a network) can start a campaign
That’s what’s so interesting about viral marketing and WOM… Things catch on when people are willing to help
It seems the “social media” world is more than willing to help out
Aw, Carter,
You brought a lot to what you’re doing. Not anybody can do what you do. 🙂
It’s all about the causes
It’s a little agonizing for me that the Milwaukee and Chicago @Twestivals are on the same night. Want to be in both locations.
Mark,
What do you think are some of the ‘action’ steps for those who want to start a sm campaign for a cause?
