The Mic is On: Guest Host Timothy Johnson

December 4, 2007 by Liz

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

The Mic Is On

Here’s how it works.

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

Naughty or Nice?

Timothy Johnson of Carpe Factum has been moonlighting as Santa’s spy this year. We’re going to be talking about good deeds and ornery pranks. Klondike Bars and Nachos available on request. Open bar will be flowing: egg nog, spiced cider, and hot chocolate all evening (well, at least until the Fat Tire runs out).

Timothy Johnson

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)

Oh, and bring links about pranks and good deeds to share!

The Mic is On: We're Talking about Gifts

We’re Already Thinking about Them…

We might talk about:

  • Gifts we gave
  • Gifts we got
  • Gifts we had to take back
  • Gifts we wish we never got
  • Gifts we re-gifted
Gift

And, whatever else comes up, including THE EVER POPULAR, Basil the code-writing donkey . . . and flamenco dancing (because we always get off topic, anyway.)

Blog World Expo: Internet People 3

November 16, 2007 by Liz

The Energy Was Amazing

relationships button

Bring out a bunch of bloggers and you’ll soon see a conversation get rolling. After all communication, information, and relationship is at the heart of every great blog.

Still on Wednesday night . . . I finally got a chance to speak with Des Walsh and Suzie Cheel. We’d been passing each other for days. They introduced me to Rich Brooks. Rich was interviewed earlier that day by Denise Wakeman and Patsi Krakoff of the Blog Squad — two ladies I’d had a chat with the night before. Teresa Valdez Klein introduced me to Matt Mullenweg and he gave me a fine WordPress t-shirt. Of course, we only spoke for a minute, but still Lorelle’s name was mentioned as a mutual friend.

Later I was thrilled when a fine man came up and said, “Liz, I’m Kevin Dixie.” It was a thrill to meet this guy, who first showed up in my email at 4a.m. Chicago time with a project that would become a dynamo. I so enjoyed talking to all of his team. It was a highpoint of the Las Vegas Trip.

Early on the next day, a voice said, “Liz! I’m Maria Palma!” Of course a hug shortly followed. Maria soon became a cohort of Robyn and mine.

John Hong introduced himself after I gave a came small talkon content and community that morning. John is the a virtuoso-to-be of Zappos’ soon to launch blogs . . . Zappos had an after-conference party. John and Ned gave Robyn and I a ride over in a real car. (Taxis are much less comfortable.) It was luxury. A little later, Maria drove over to the party in her own car.

The elegant host, Mr. Hong, showed us to the best seats, and saw we were taken care of. A special thank you to John who made sure our evening was with a friend who cared.

Thanks for the conversation about airplanes, business, and great music goes out to Matt Colebourne. And a thank you to Jeremy Pepper who joined us for a talk.

I heard a story about a pink shirt, and a shopping trip Jeremy went on that night with Robyn and John. hmmmm

I wouldn’t know about that — Robyn was already asleep . . . while Maria and I were still in the cafe drinking large cups of hot chocolate.

Those are just some of the Internet people . . . even more will be showing up next year in September.

Thanks to Dave Thomas and Rick Calvert and all who put the show on.

Blog World Expo: Internet People All Have Cameras

November 14, 2007 by Liz

I Found One and Took It Back

relationships button

If you go to a blogger meet up that involves more than yourself, you’re likely to find at least one camera in the group. Actually it could be two, couldn’t it?

Cameras of every sort were in use at BlogWorldExpo. A camera or two got pointed at me now and then. I even found one on a bench left behind when designer, John T. Unger, headed off to a session. I returned it even though I think I might have been the only camera-free person at the entire event. It turned out that the camera belonged to John’s friend — Well actually it belonged to the man’s wife. So a husband and a camera united in Las Vegas might have helped save a marriage. Now that’s something you don’t get to say every day. Yeah!

Liz Strauss and Toby Blumberg

This shot of Toby Blumberg, the famous Marketing Diva, and me was taken by Andy Wibbels. Imagine this — he lives within walking distance of my living room, but we had to go to Las Vegas to meet. It’s a bloggers’ shame . . . don’t you think?

Toby and I also ended up in a video shot by the handsome Shel Israel with his new video cam. As Toby and I discussed bloggers, Las Vegas and Shel’s equipment, Jim Turner and Tris Hussey hid their heads in their hands. I’m sure that their red faces were caused by their own outrageous laughter. Shel made the comment that Tris could be Andy Rooney. I sort of think Tris could lead about 43 double lives if he cared to.

Toby, Robyn Tippins, Steve Broback and I also got caught by Deb Weil’s video cam.

If you head on over to Brian Solis’ Blog bub.licio.us, you’ll get to see other folks I got to see while I was there. Sim from Utterz is an intelligent, engaging guy with a great new product. Chris Brogan, Robyn, Jeremiah, and Stephanie look great. Stephanie was the elegant host of a fine party the evening before. Thank you, Stephanie for your hospitality.

I didn’t meet Matt Colebourne until the next evening, but he’s there in the pictures as well. I sure enjoyed the time we had when we did get to talk. It’s not often that a conversation on music goes quite as far reaching as ours did.

Robyn and I met up with Brian Solis and Frank Gruber after the pajama party. If you look, you’ll find both of them in the pictures. Frank’s always a friend in a crowd and a pleasure to see. Meeting Brian for the first time was a smile of the mischevious sort. We found that we have people and thoughts in common — no further comment on that, only a grin. Robyn, Frank, Brian, and I actually talked business as well as blogging. It’s okay, no one was listening in.

More on the people of BlogWorld Expo to come . . . Part 3 is next.

How Cool Is All of This?!!

relationships button

If I said it once in Las Vegas, I must have said it a million times — no I don’t exaggerate . . . much — still the point is the same, blogging is NOT about writing, it’s about the people. The people are who bring the ideas, who give an event life. The halls are quiet and desolate without the people walking in them.

Will you visit a few with me? I thought I’d check what they’re doing today.

Friends I Know and Friends I Met for the First Time

My blogging friends were there. . . . those that I’ve met before.

Thank you for the opening hello from Aaron Brazell and his tech guys — Mark and Lee. A fine hello from Mr. Jeremy Wright started Tuesday evening off beautifully. It wasn’t until Wednesday that I met Brian Layman in person.

Christina Jones was as tall as I am for that that entire night. Mary Jo Manzanares can attest to that! The conversation that followed with Mary Jo, the lovely Leora Zellman –who has so many blogs no one knows which to link to — and the famous Deb Ng set the tone for the event.

Christina’s hospitality was generous and ever so fun!

Chris Brogan’s smile lit up Wednesday morning and was still going strong through to Friday evening. I got to sit by him at the networking lunch, then on Thursday night, we had an impromtu take down in the casino. Barbara Rozgonyi was witness to the event, though she had her back turned as a PR professional might in such delicate circumstance.

In the first b5 media session on Wednesday, I met the notorious Glenda Hyatt Watson and her dear man, Darrell. They are a pair of talking troublemakers. Don’t let them fool you. Mike DeWitt and Susan Reynolds you have that red-haired Glenda pegged.

Also early on Wednesday, I met up with my dear cohort, Wendy Piersall, . . . she wowed them all with her presentation. Who was surprised by that? She was a driving force in getting me to find my way to speak. Thank you, Wendy.

Easton, Tim, Hal, Dan, and Kimberly were there from KnowMoreMedia. Hal got me to play my first game of Wii. How cool is that?!!

Robyn Tippins, community manager for MyBlogLog, and Sleepy Blogger herself, was my boon companion again. So much so that people had trouble telling us apart — except for the part where she’s about 7 inches shorter, with long dark hair, and much younger . . . people were sure that we’re twins.

Wow! And this is only Internet People, Part 1 . . .

Open Comments Tomorrow! Want to Be the Host?

November 12, 2007 by Liz

Do I have a volunteer to act as host?

I’ve been called out for a spectacular meeting.

I know that you folks can hold a conversation without me here.

So, I can invite you to be the host until I get home around 9pm or so Chicago time.

Or I can move it or call it off . . . seems a bit drastic.

What would you do? I leave at dawn in the morning.

Update: Nick Schmidt, Video Blogger, has agreed to take the reins and be bartender for the evening. I should be checking in to see how things are going in some time near 9pm
