Bloggy Question 82: It's the Truth, Well, Sort of . . .

April 27, 2008 by Liz

And Not Think About Motives

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

You had a casual conversation with a group of friends about telling the truth. All of you agreed that truth is important to a relationship.

Then the question of the middle ground came up.

Someone asked, “What do you do when someone asks your opinion of their blog, and you think that it’s really bad?”

One of your friends answers, “Hey that’s easy, you tell the truth and make it sound like a lie. You talk with exaggeration while smiling, and say something like, ‘Ooh your writing is SO incredibly boring and below level, that it makes even you want to think of 1,000 ways to die.’ Then you laugh and smile. It’s the truth, but the person won’t believe you. The question is over and you’re safe again.”

Another friend says, “That’s deception. It’s the same as a lie.”

How do you respond?

Bloggy Question 81: A Nice Gesture

April 20, 2008 by Liz

And Not Think About Motives

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

A friend of yours is beginning his business. She’s exploring many ways to promote and market what she does in many networks. You and she have had conversations over the past few years about what you believe in, she’s more about push marketing and aggressive transactions. You’re clearly more about relationships before talking about business.

Recently, she put together something to help a product you’ve introduced. When she told you, you were delighted to hear of her unsolicited support. Until you got there . . . your product isn’t on her website — it shows up in a new window as a popunder.

How do you respond?

Bloggy Question 80: Internet Business Isn't Credible?

April 13, 2008 by Liz

Can See Them, Don’t Know Their Address

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

Recently, a friend made an observation about working on the Internet. It went like this . . .

He said that that the Internet contractors, developers, consultants, and coaches he’s worked with all have a problem in in common. “They’re not grounded in the brick and mortar world.”

You asked him what he meant.

He said, “My experience is that people I work with all over the world, who have employment and a regular paycheck in structures where other people work, show up when situations get difficult. People I’ve hired on the Internet disappear when projects get difficult or they get overwhelmed.”

You point to folks you know who’ve never had that problem.

He points to the situations that tie those folks to brick and mortar. He suggests that you establish local business saying that, “The Internet will always be filled with people who can easily flee their responsibilities and therefore businesses that are solely Internet based will never have complete credibility.”

How do you respond?

Bloggy Question 79: What's a Social Media Expert?

Do You Want a Buzz Word on Your Business Card?

For those who come looking for a short, thoughtful read, a blogging life discussion, or a way to gradually ease back into the week. I offer this bloggy life question. . . .

A friend of yours has begun a new business.

You’ve noticed that — like so many others — she’s put the title “Social Media Expert” on her business card. You ask her what this means. What does this offer?

She says that in today’s world “marketing” doesn’t do it.

You wonder . . . You’re thinking buzz words only bring people down to the lowest common denominator. How many “social media experts” are out there? She is, after all, great at interweaving a web presence into an overall marketing effort. You don’t really think “social media expert” says all that she’s good at.

How do you respond?
