Great Find: List Your Writing Contest At Competizione

October 8, 2006 by Liz

And the Winner Was . . .

Are you getting tired of finding out about writing contests AFTER they are over? Musingwoman was too — enough that it spurred her to action. A new blog was born so that folks could keep up woth upcoming contests and rules. So, competitors, start your keyboards.

Great Find: competizione
Permalink: http://musing.typepad.com/competizione/

Audience/Topic: Folks interested in announcing or participating in writing contests.

Content: This new blog which started just this month already has a list of competitions, and invites you to send in competitions you’re having so that you can attract more entrants. The guildelines are clearly stated. To briefly summarize them:

Contests can be for blog or for a task — win a ___ by writing a ___.

Information should submitted by email and need to include a link to the contest announcement post, the deadline date, limit to entries (if there is one) and any other pertinent information.

No profanity, pornography, or discriminatory content.

Sites with adult/mature (R-rated content) should be labeled when submitted so that competizione can alert audience visitors.

Contest submitters are asked to link to competizione. The submitter’s site link will remain on competizione after the contest post has been deleted.

Have a contest! It’s a great way to show off your blog and attract new readers. Let Musingwoman tell folks about your contest — free promotion is an excellent deal. It’s a chance to expand your network of relationships. Stretch your brand a bit. I can see your blog growing already . . . yep. Click on the title to see what’s there for you.

competizione

A writing contest is even more exciting outside a writing blog. . . . On a techie blog? a real estate blog? a travel blog? Really? You bet. All bloggers have to write, don’t they? Imagine the kind of contest you might invent.

UPDATE: NOT ALL CONTESTS ARE FOR WRITERS — ALL THE MORE REASONS TO CHECK COMPETIZIONE OUT!

The Mic is On! What’s Hot and What’s Not?

October 3, 2006 by Liz

It’s Like Open Mic Only Different

Here’s how it works.

open mike night

It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here. Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME
The rules are simple — be nice.

There are always first timers and new things to talk about. It’s sort of half “Cheers” part “Friends” and part video game. You don’t know how much fun it is until you try it.

Tonight we’re talking about what’s bloggy hot and what’s not!

hot

We might also talk about

  • what the cool bloggers wear when they’re posting
  • hot blogs, hot bloggers, hot ideas for bloggers to blog about
  • spam, weird search strings, off the wall comments
  • what cool things you wish someone would come up with

AND THE EVER POPULAR,
Basil the code-writing donkey, and I heard Milton the Moose might show up.

How to Write a Deal Memo in Under 5 Minutes

October 2, 2006 by Liz

Getting the Deal Memo on Paper

I suppose it’s the same in every business. I know that it’s so in publishing. An important term — a term such as 1st pages — can mean something entirely different from one organization to another. Many folks make the mistake of thinking that when we use the same words that we mean the same things. Then in the middle of a project bad things happen, and great relationships sour. One way to get close to clear communication is to get down in writing what is being agreed to.

Unfortunately, some jobs would be in serious jeopardy if we waited to start until a full-blown contract could be prepared. I can show you how to get the most important information together in one place in just a few minutes. In this case, it’s deal memo for intellectual property — a job definition that will make both the client and the contractor comfortable enough to begin working.

I’ve made a sample on the next page. Let’s look.

How to Write Deal Memo in Under 5 Minutes

In my experience, what often happens is that a client and consultant talk about a project and then say, Let’s put together something that shows how we might work together. In another scenario, two equal partners, trying to build something as Phil and I are, need to determine the details of how the relationship will work.

What happens most often in these situations is that folks try to gather too much detailed information. What’s needed is the basics so that both parties can move forward with confidence that important parts are covered. The assumption is that standard industry practice covers all else until the contract is written. As soon thereafter when the contract is ready, the information on the deal memo, easily fits into a contract as Exhibit A — add target schedule dates tied to payments, and your good to go.

A deal memo also stops conversation with other parties around that project.

Take a look at this sample deal memo and what it covers. It is typical for intellectual property, in all ways except that we were still negotiating how to split the online rights so, on this one, they are not addressed outright.

It’s still enough to send and sign to show that we agree on major points and preliminary work can begin. The team can talk about ideas, folks who might need to be contacted and hired, other supply and staffing issues, while we are working out the details of a project scope and proposal, and issues such as the way to address electronic rights.

It took me at least 15 times longer to write this post than it does to write the average deal memo. On Phil’s job the deal memo outlines that there will be one book worked on, that it will come from his archives, and who will own the rights.

Do you have questions or concerns at this point?

For another kind of job, you might write a 5-minute proposal. I’ll show how to do that in the next post.

Be irresistible.

Dream Homes Invaded by Link Leak Virus

September 27, 2006 by Liz

Imagine Your Dream Home

Open Comment Night began in a lovely way. Doug and Joe and AdLib started talking and shortly thereafter the talk of magical exciting dream homes started showing signs of the link leak virus.

The Link Leak Virus was to be part of every home we described — even Phil’s famous Gerby Shak! The Link Leak Virus is a special strain of the indie virus with blogtipping mutations that occur in threes at Open Comment Night they become a link free-for-all.

Welcome to all of the new folks who came. It was great fun having you!

Cool links were shared.

  • the real estate bubble
  • something that would be home to HART’s Dream House.
  • Rainbow Dome Home
  • Joe’s Jet 1 and Joe’s SR-71
  • Views from a Dream Home
  • Whale Skin Hubcaps — quicktime
  • – more reasons why you should be in a union if you don’t own the company
  • isle of eriska
  • 5 minute meal

Just a Bunch of Dreamers

Douglas came in talking of McMansions, but they weren’t for Joe who dreamed of
a two-part building for his dwelling.
AdLib told of a Dungeon of Doom or the World’s Largest Library, but Joe wasn’t buying. He said it could take as many 11,005,247 comments to get his house back — no telling.

The pace picked up after that.

Dossy brought news of the housing bubble about to pop.
Kirsten decided that one dream house was no place to stop.
Phil’s imagination carried everyone away to adventure land
Start reading at comment 47 and you’ll understand.
Renée doesn’t need a new dream home. She’s got one.
Ben just sold his. So, he’s looking to find another one.

Rick has his dream home planned with a skycar also.
Starbucker will be dreaming his days away in the mountains of Colorado.
HART gets the real estate mantra location, location, location.
A log cabin is Mike’s ideal permanent dream vacation.

Christine will be on a river in the woods.
SeanRox seems to think the house he’s in is pretty good.
Becky wants real wiring and closets that aren’t too small.
Samuel thinks after all his homes this one is best of all.

cat’s had dream houses and is surprised that a city now has its charm.
Whimsperation wants to build downtown homestead farm.

Me? I just want to live in a luxury airplane, flying to see all of my friends in their dream houses everywhere.
